In this study, coconut husk cellulose was employed as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly adsorbent to eliminate methylene blue (MB) dye from aqueous solutions. The successful development of response surface methodology paired with a central composite design (RSM-CCD) enabled the optimization and modelling of the adsorption process. The study investigated the individual and combined effects of three variables (pH, contact time, and initial MB dye concentration) on the adsorption of MB dye onto coconut husk cellulose. The developed RSM-CCD model exhibited a remarkable degree of precision in predicting the removal efficiency of MB dye within the specified experimental parameters. This was demonstrated by the strong regression parameters, with an R2 value of 99.79% and an adjusted R2 value of 99.6%. The study depicted that the optimal parameters for attaining a 98.8827% removal of MB dye using coconut husk cellulose were as follows: an initial MB dye concentration of 30 mg∙L−1, contact time of 120 minutes, and pH 7 at a fixed adsorbent dose of 0.5 g. The Freundlich isotherm model provided the most satisfactory description of the equilibrium adsorption isotherms, suggesting that MB dye adsorption onto coconut husk cellulose occurs on a heterogeneous surface. The experimental results demonstrated a strong agreement with the pseudo-second-order kinetics model, indicating that the number of active sites present on the cellulose adsorbent predominantly influences the adsorption process of MB dye. Additionally, the adsorbent made from coconut husk cellulose exhibited the potential to be reused, as it retained its efficiency for a maximum of three cycles of adsorption of MB dye. The results of this study show that coconut husk cellulose has the potential to be an effective and sustainable adsorbent for removing MB dye from aqueous solutions. 展开更多

Numerical predictions are made for Laminar Forced convection heat transfer with and without buoyancy effects for Supercritical Nitrogen flowing over an isothermal horizontal flat plate with a heated surface facing downwards.Computations are performed by varying the value ofΔT from5 to 30 K and P_(∞)/P_(cr)ratio from1.1 to 1.5.Variation of all the thermophysical properties of supercritical Nitrogen is considered. The wall temperatures are chosen in such a way that two values of Tw are less than T∗(T*is the temperature at which the fluid has a maximum value of Cp for the given pressure),one value equal to T∗and two values greater than T∗.Three different values of U∞are used to obtain Re∞range of 3.6×10_(4)to 4.74×10^(5)for forced convection without buoyancy effects and Gr_(∞)/Re^(2)_(∞)range of 0.011 to 3.107 for the case where buoyancy effects are predominant.Six different forms of correlations are proposed based on numerical predictions and are compared with actual numerical predictions. It has been found that in all six forms of correlations, the maximum deviations are found to occur in those cases where the pseudocritical temperature TT∗lies between the wall temperature and bulk fluid temperature. 展开更多

Kinetics and isotherms of Triton X-100 sorption on soil,base-extracted soil(BE),humic acid(HA) and humin(HM) were investigated respectively to get better understanding on characteristics of the surfactant sorption onto different soil organic matters(SOMs).It was demonstrated that the kinetics results could be satisfactorily described by the pseudo-second order model. The half of the time to reach equilibrium(t1/2) for different sorbents followed the sequence of soil 〉 HA 〉 BE 〉 HM.Furthermore, the calculated equilibrium sorption capacity(Ceq) was found in the sequence of HA 〉 BE 〉 HM 〉 soil, which agreed well with the experimental results. The isotherms of Triton X-100 sorption on soil and HA could be well described by the S-type isotherm, but BE and HM by the L-type.The isotherms of all the four sorbents were found reasonably fitted to the Langmuir equation. The Kd value, defined as the ratio of Triton X-100 in sorbent and in the equilibrium solution for given concentrations, generally followed the order of HM 〉 HA 〉 soil 〉 BE.Separated HM and HA showed high affnity for Triton X-100,but the HA and HM in soil and BE were tightly bounded by the minerals. Thus, the HA on the soil surface might dominate the sorption, whereas the bounded HM would play a key role upon the surfactants being penetrated inside the soil. 展开更多

Surface charge, secondary adsorption- desorption and form distribution of Cu2+ and Zn2+ in Ultisols and Alfisols having adsorbed phosphate were studied by potentiometric titration, adsorption equilibrium and sequential extraction method, respectively. The soil surface negative charges increased whereas the amount of positive charges decreased with increase of P adsorbed. The soil secondary adsorption capacity for Cu2+ and Zn2+ was positively significantly correlated with the amount of P adsorbed by the soils, which could be described by the Langmuir equation. The amounts of Cu2+ and Zn2+ desorption from soils were decreased after P adsorption by the soils and the relationship between them was linear. After the soils adsorbed P, form distribution of Cu2+ and Zn2+ in soils changed remarforbly. 展开更多

Charge characteristics and Cu2+ adsorption-desorption of soils with variable charge (latosol) and permanent charge (brown soil) and the relationship between them were studied by means of back-titration and adsorption equilibrium respectively. The amount of variable negative charge was much less in variable-charge soil than in permanent-charge soil and increased with the pH in the system, but the opposite trend occurred in the points of zero charge (PZCs). The amount of Cu2+ ions sorbed by permanent-charge soil was more than that by variable-charge soil and increased with the increase of Cu2+ concentration within a certain range in the equilibrium solution. The amount of Cu2+ ions desorbed with KC1 from permanent-charge soil was more than that from variable-charge soil, but the amount of Cu2+ ions desorbed with de-ionized water from permanent-charge soil was extremely low whereas there was still a certain amount of desorption from variable-charge soil. The increase of PZC of soils with variable or permanent charge varied with the increment of Cu2+ ions added. When the same amount of Cu2+ ions was added, the increments of PZC and variable negative surface charge of permanent-charge soil were different from those of variable-charge soil. 展开更多

Four coal samples of different ranks are selected to perform the adsorption measurement of high-pressure methane(CH4).The highest equilibrium pressure of the measurement exceeds 20 MPa. Combined with the measuring results and theoretical analyses, the reasons for the peak or the maximum adsorption capacity appearing in the excess adsorption isotherms are explained. The rules of the peak occurrence are summarized. And then, based on the features of coal pore structure, the adsorption features of high-pressure gas,the microcosmic interaction relationship of coal surface and CH4 molecule, and the coalbed methane reservoir conditions, three theoretical assumptions on the coal adsorption high-pressure CH_4 are suggested.Thereafter,on the basis of these theoretical assumptions, the Ono-Kondo lattice model is processed for simplification and deformation. Subsequently, the equations modeling the excess adsorption isotherm of high-pressure CH_4 adsorption on coal are obtained.Through the verification on the measurement data, the fitting results indicate that it is feasible to use the Ono-Kondo lattice mode to model the excess adsorption isotherm of high-pressure CH_4 adsorption on coal. 展开更多

During the processes of methane adsorption and desorption, the internal structure of coal changes, accordingly leading to changes in electrical conductivity. In this paper, using low rank coal seams of the Yan'an Formation in the Dafbsi field as the research subject, the relationship between coal resistivity, methane adsorption quantity, and equilibrium pressure is analyzed through proximate analysis, mercury injection tests, low temperature liquid nitrogen adsorption tests, and coal resistivity measurements during methane adsorption and desorption. The results show that during the process of pressure rise and methane adsorption, the conductivity of coal increases, resulting from heat release from methane adsorption, coal matrix swelling and adsorbed water molecules replaced by methane, but the resistivity reduction gradually decreases. The relationship between coal resistivity and methane adsorption quantity and equilibrium pressure can be described by a quadratic function.During the processes of depressurization and desorption, the resistivity of coal rebounds slightly, due to decalescence of methane desorption, coal matrix shrinkage and water-gas displacement, and the relationship coincides with a linear function.Methane adsorption leads to irreversible changes in coal internal structure and enhances the coal conductivity, and resistivity can not be restored to the initial level even after methane desorption. The resistivity and reduction rate of durain are higher than those of vitrain, with relatively greater homogeneous pore throat structure and fewer charged particles in the double electric layer. In addition, moisture can enhance the conductivity of coal and makes it change more complexly during methane adsorption and desorption. 展开更多

It is important to quantitatively understand the methane adsorption and transport mechanism in coal for an evaluation of the reserves and for its production forecast. In this work, a block coal sample was chosen to perform the CH_4 adsorption experiments using the gravimetric method at temperatures of 293.60 K, 311.26 K, 332.98 K and 352.55 K and pressures up to 19 MPa. The excess adsorption capacity of CH_4 in dry block anthracite increased, followed by a sequence decrease with the increasing pressure. High temperature restrained the growth of the excess adsorption due to that the adsorption is an intrinsically physical and exothermic process. The excess adsorption peak decreased slowly with the increase of temperature and intersected at a pressure of more than 18 MPa; meanwhile, the pressure at the excess adsorption peak increased. The existing correlations were exanfined in terms of density rather than pressure. The DR+k correlation, with an average relative deviation of 4-0.51%, fitted our data better than the others, with an average relative deviation of up to 2.29%. The transportation characteristics of CH_4 adsorption was also investigated in this study, including the adsorption rate and diffusion in block coal. The kinetic data could be described by a modified unipore model. The adsorption rates were found to exhibit dependence on pressure and temperature at low pressures, while the calculated diffusivities exhibited little temperature dependence. In addition, the kinetic characteristics were compared between CH_4 and CO_2 adsorption on the block coal. The excess adsorption ratios of CO_2 to CH_4 obtained from the DR+k model decreased with the increasing pressure. 展开更多

The adsorption-desorption characteristics of chlorimuron-ethyl in soils were investigated to provide the basic data for evaluating the safety in field and the risk to water resource. The adsorption-desorption experiment was conducted by the batch equilibration and HPLC techniques; furthermore, data were analyzed with 5 mathematic models to describe the characteristics and mechanism of adsorption-desorption and translocation of the herbicide in soils. The results showed that the adsorption-desorption isotherms of chlorimuron-ethyl fitted for the Freundlich model well, and the physical reaction presents the main contribution during the adsorption-desorption process. The adsorption values (Kads-f) of chlorimuron-ethyl in 8 types of soil ranged from 0.798 to 6.891. The isotherms of 2# (Jiangxi clay) and 3# (Jiangxi sand loam) soils belong to the S-type curve, while the isotherms of another 6 type soils belong to the L-type isotherm. The results of desorption indicated that the hysteresis phenomena appeared during the desorption process, and the hysteresis coefficients (H) of the herbicides in 8 soils varied from 0.259-0.980. Furthermore, Kads-f and desorption values (Kads-f) increased with the OM (%) and the clay content increasing, while the values decreased with the soils pH increasing. The H values decreased with the OM and the clay content increasing, and increased with the soils pH increasing. It can be concluded that the low adsorption abilities of chlorimuron-ethyl in test soils and un-reversible adsorption existed in the process, which will induce the great translocation of the herbicide after application in field. It can be transported to ground or groundwater causing risk to environments. The physical and chemical properties of soils, including the OM, the clay content, and the pH of soil were the dominating factors during the adsorption-desorption. 展开更多

The effect of temperature on the properties of boron adsorption-desorption in brown-red soil, yellowbrown soil and calcareous alluvial soil of Hubei Province was investigated with the mobile displacement technique. The experimental data of B adsorption-desorption amounts and reaction t line at 25 and 40℃ were fitted by the zero-order, first-order and parabolic diffusion kinetic equations. The adsorption process was in conformity with the parabolic diffusion law at both the temperatures, and the values of rate constant of the parabolic diffusion equation in B adsorption were 0.138, 0.124 and 0.105 mg kg-1 min-1/2 at 25℃, and 0.147, 0.146 and 0.135 mg kg-1 min-1/2 at 40℃ for the brown-red soil, yellow-brown soil, and calcareous alluvial soil, respectively. The relationship between amount of B desorption and reaction time could be well described by the first-order kinetic equation, and the corresponding values of rate constant were 0.0422, 0.0563 and 0.0384 min-1 at 25℃, and 0.0408, 0.042 3 and 0.0401 min-1 at 40℃ for the brown-red soil, the yellow-brown soil and the calcareous alluvial soil, respectively. Therefore, the desorption process of B might be related to the amount of B adsorbed in soil. The higher the temperature, the lower the amount of B adsorption for the same soil in the same reaction time. The values of the apparent activation energy of B adsorption in the three soils calculated with the rate constants of parabolic diffusion equation were 3.27, 8.44 and 12.99 kJ mol-1, respectively, based on the experimental data of B adsorption amounts and reaction time at 25 and 40℃. 展开更多

In this research miswak leaves, agriculture wastes, available in large quantity in Saudi Arabia, was used as low-cost adsorbent for removing methylene blue (MB) dye. Equilibrium behavior of miswak leaves was investigated by performing batch adsorption experiments. The effects of [MB] 0, pH, contact time and adsorbent dose were evaluated. An alkaline pH (10.6) was favorable to the adsorption of MB dye. Adsorption isotherm models, Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin were used to simulate the equilibrium data. Langmuir equation was found to have the highest value of R2 compared with other models. Furthermore, it was found that miswak leaves have a high adsorptive capacity towards MB dye (200 mg/g) and show favorable adsorption of MB dye with separation factor (RL < 1). In addition, pseudo-first- order, pseudo-second order and intra-particle diffusion were used to study the kinetics of MB adsorption onto miswak leaves. Adsorption process undergoes pseudo-second order kinetic as proved by the high value of R2 and the low value of sum of squared error (SSE percentage). Results indicated that intra-particle diffusion is not the limiting step, and the adsorption process is spontaneous as indicated by the negative value of the . 展开更多

The adsorption properties, including the adsorption isotherms, thermodynamics and kinetics, of 1-amino-2- naphthol-4-sulfonic acid (1,2,4-acid) onto weakly basic resin ND900 are investigated. Both the Langmuir and Freundlich equations can give a good fit to the adsorption isotherms, which indicates an endothermic and a favorable adsorption in our study range. A high yield in elimination of about 45.21 %-97.28% is obtained for the tested adsorption systems. The capacity and affinity of the adsorption increase with temperature, due to the phenomena of 'solvent-motivated' effects. The value of is 51.59 kJ/mol, which indicates a chemical adsorption and then expects the poor desorption property of ND900. The negative value of indicates the spontaneous nature of the adsorption process, and the positive value of shows the increased randomness at the solid/solution interface during the adsorption process. The value of the adsorption rate constant lower than 0.013 min-1 is indicative of a slow adsorption rate. The intra-particle diffusion must be one of the rate limiting steps. 展开更多

Adsorption and desorption are important processes that influence the transport, transformation, and bioavailability of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) in soils. To examine the adsorption-desorption characteristics of HCB, equilibrium batch experiments were carried out using two soils (red soil and paddy soil) with different initial HCB concentrations (0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.00, 1.50, 2.50, 3.50, and 5.00 mg L-1 ) by using 0.01 mol L-1 calcium chloride as the background solution. The successive desorption experiments (48, 96, 144, 192, and 240 h) were conducted after each adsorption equilibrium experiment. The results revealed that adsorption and desorption isotherms of HCB on two soils were nonlinear, which can be best described by the Freundlich equation with the square of the correlation coefficient (r 2 ) ranging from 0.97 to 0.99. Desorption of HCB from the two soils exhibited hysteresis at all HCB concentrations because the Freundlich desorption coefficients were always higher than the Freundlich adsorption coefficients. The hysteretic effect was enhanced with increasing initial HCB concentration, and positive hysteresis was observed at different concentrations. 展开更多

In this study, adsorption of Congo red dye onto activated carbon prepared from Jujube (Ziziphus Mauritiania) seeds with phosphoric acid as the activating agent was investigated. Batch adsorption studies were carried out to study the influence of contact time, adsorbent dosage and initial dye concentration on the adsorption. The data was analysed using pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order kinetic models. The pseudo-second order kinetic model was found to describe the adsorption more effectively with a perfect correlation coefficient of unity. The rate constant, K was obtained as 0.182 (g/mg min) and the calculated qe (9.81) is very close to the experimental value (9.78). A high correlation coefficient obtained when the data was analysed with the intraparticle diffusion rate equation, revealed the presence of intraparticle diffusion in the adsorption process even though it is not the sole controlling step as shown by the value of the intercept (C ≠ 0). Isotherm studies showed that there is high correlation in each case when the data was modelled with Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevic isotherm models but the best fit was obtained with the Freundlich model with R2 = 0.9991, adsorption capacity, KF = 19.73 (mg/g)(mg/L)1/n and n = 1.563 indicating the adsorption is favourable and occurs on a heterogeneous surface by multilayer. The study showed that activated carbon from jujube seeds is an effective adsorbent for the removal of Congo red dye from solution. 展开更多

Equilibrium adsorption studies for detoxification of Congo Red (CR) dye from single component model wastewater by powdered watermelon rinds and neem leaves adsorbents were carried out with the view to test the applicability of the adsorption process to Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Dubinin-Radushkevich and Harkins-Jura isotherm models. The values of correlation coefficient, R2 (0.9359 - 0.9998), showed that all the experimental data fitted the linear plots of the tested isotherm models. Dubinin-Radushkevich’s monolayer maximum adsorption capacity qD (20.72 - 26.06 mg/g) is better than Langmuir’s qm (18.62 - 24.75 mg/g) for both adsorbents with the capacities higher for adsorption on watermelon rind than on neem leaves. Values of Langmuir separation factor (RL) suggest unfavourable adsorption processes (i.e. chemisorption) of the dye on both the adsorbents, while Freundlich constant (nF) indicates unfavourable process only for CR adsorption onto neem leaves. The Dubinin-Radushkevich’s mean free energy of adsorption, E (0.29 - 0.32 kJ/mol), suggests physical adsorption processes. Values for Temkin’s heat of adsorption, bT (-0.95 to 0.74 kJ/mol), also show physical adsorption process. 展开更多

We show that most of the empirical or semi-empirical isotherms proposed to extend the Langmuir formula to sorption (adsorption, chimisorption and biosorption) on heterogeneous surfaces in the gaseous and liquid phase belong to the family and subfamily of the BurrXII cumulative distribution functions. As a consequence they obey relatively simple differential equations which describe birth and death phenomena resulting from mesoscopic and microscopic physicochemical processes. Using the probability theory, it is thus possible to give a physical meaning to their empirical coefficients, to calculate well defined quantities and to compare the results obtained from different isotherms. Another interesting consequence of this finding is that it is possible to relate the shape of the isotherm to the distribution of sorption energies which we have calculated for each isotherm. In particular, we show that the energy distribution corresponding to the Brouers-Sotolongo (BS) isotherm [1] is the Gumbel extreme value distribution. We propose a generalized GBS isotherm, calculate its relevant statistical properties and recover all the previous results by giving well defined values to its coefficients. Finally we show that the Langmuir, the Hill-Sips, the BS and GBS isotherms satisfy the maximum Bolzmann-Shannon entropy principle and therefore should be favoured. 展开更多

It can be used to measure the isotherms under supercritical condition. The adsorption isotherms of phenol on activated carbons and polymeric adsorbents are estimated and compared respectively for the systems of 'phenol-activated carbon-supercritical fluid CO2' and 'phenol-polymeric adsorbent-supercritical fluid CO2'. The results show that the amount of phenol adsorbed on the activated carbons and the polymeric adsorbents under the supercritical condition is much less than that under the general condition, which can be utilized to develop a technology regenerating the activated carbon with supercritical fluid. Moreover, the effects of ethyl alcohol, used as the third component, on the isotherms of phenol on the activated carbons and polymeric adsorbents under the supercritical condition are also investigated. 展开更多
