Different bactericidal abilities of plasma-activated saline with various reactive species prepared by surface plasma-activated air and plasma jet combinations

Plasma-activated water(PAW),as an extended form of cold atmospheric-pressure plasma,greatly expands the application of plasma-based technology.The biological effects of PAW are closely related to the aqueous reactive species,which can be regulated by the activation process.In this study,surface plasma-activated air(SAA)and a He+O_(2)plasma jet(Jet)were parallelly combined(the SAA+Jet combination)or sequentially combined(the SAA→Jet combination and the Jet→SAA combination)to prepare plasma-activated saline(PAS).The PAS activated by the combinations exhibited stronger bactericidal effects than that activated by the SAA or the Jet alone.The concentrations of H_(2)O_(2)and NO_(2)^(-)were higher in the PAS activated by the Jet→SAA combination,while ONOO^(-)concentrations were close in the three kinds of PAS and^(1)O_(2)concentrations were higher in the PAS activated by the SAA+Jet combination.The analysis of scavengers also demonstrated that H_(2)O_(2),^(1)O_(2),and ONOO^(-)in the PAS activated by the SAA+Jet combination,and^(1)O_(2)in the PAS activated by the Jet→SAA combination played critical roles in bactericidal effects.Further,the effective placement time of the three PAS varied,and the PAS activated by the Jet→SAA combination could also inactivate 2.6-log_(10)of MRSA cells after placement for more than 60 min.The regulation of reactive species in plasma-activated water via different combinations of plasma devices could improve the directional application of plasma-activated water in the biomedical field. 展开更多

Conclusion\ When the fuel flow velocity is higher than that of the explosion gas in the center cavity, the fuel divides with the explosion gas and its velocity of flow reaches a maximum. To study the draft sensation distribution of an air jet supply system in a large space building in summer,experiments are conducted in a large laboratory.The temperature,velocity and draft sensation distributions at a nozzle height of 4 m in the occupied zone are obtained.Then,the numerical simulation under the test condition is carried out by the computational fluid dynamics(CFD)method.The calculation results of the indoor vertical temperature and the draft sensation distribution are validated by the test data.Simulations with different nozzle heights are conducted.The satisfactory air supply condition is determined by analyzing the draft sensations and the temperatures in the occupied zone under three conditions.The simulation results show that the optimal draft sensation distribution and the uniform temperature and velocity fields can be obtained at a nozzle height of 5 m. 展开更多

This paper analyzes the applications of four air terminal device(ATD)models(i.e.,the basic model,the box model,the N-point momentum model,the jet main region specification model)in computational fluid dynamics(CFD)simulation and their performance in case study.A full-scale experiment is performed in an environment chamber,and the measured air velocity and temperature fields are compared with the simulation results by using four ATD models.The velocity and temperature fields are measured by an omni-directional thermo-anemometer system.It demonstrates that the basic model and the box model are not applicable to complicated air terminal devices.At the occupant area,the relative errors between simulated and measured air velocities are less than 20% based on the N-point momentum model and the jet main region specification model.Around the ATD zone,the relative error between the numerical and measured air velocity based on the jet main region specification model is less than 15%.The jet main region specification model is proved to be an applicable approach and a more accurate way to study the airflow pattern around the ATD with complicated geometry. 展开更多

Narrow fractions of light gas oils obtained from various upgrading processes of Athabasca oilsands bitumen were investigated as diesel and jet fuels. The relationship among the boiling range, cetane number, smoke point, and other properties such as aromatics content, aniline point, and the sulfur and nitrogen content was also studied. The study reveals that when appropriate processes and distillation boiling ranges are selected, oilsands bitumen can produce diesel and jet fuels that meet stringent environmental regulations and future product specifications. New correlations to predict CN and smoke point were developed as a function of density, boiling ranges by simulated distillation, and mono- and total aromatics by supercritical fluid chromatography. The correlations apply to bitumen-derived middle distillates that have a wide range of boiling points. 展开更多

In order to form an atmospheric-pressure plasma jet without airflow, a needle–ring electrode structure is proposed in this paper. When heteropolar potentials are applied to a needle and a ring, a marked electric field strength enhancement around the needle’s pointed end has been found. When the same potential is applied to both the needle and the ring, the lateral electric field strength for the needle can be weakened. By using the above two methods, an increase of the difference between the pointed end electric field strength and the lateral one is achieved and stable plasma jets are formed. A symmetrical space electric field distribution is established at the pointed end of the needles when several sets of heteropolar needle–ring electrodes are uniformly arranged, which is conducive to forming a uniform array plasma jet. Under DC discharge conditions, a safe and stable plasma jet of high density and an array plasma jet are successfully achieved. 展开更多

To make clear the influence of abrasive hardness on the erosion effect,the erosion experiments of abrasive air jet with the same impact energy were carried out.The influence of abrasive hardness on the erosion effect is clarified by comparing the different erosion depths.The main conclusions are as follows.Under the same mass flow rate and mesh number,the abrasive with a higher density needs greater pressure irrespective of hardness.After erosion damage,the abrasive size exhibits a Weibull distribution.The shape parameterβand Weibull distribution function of four types of abrasives are derived by the least squares method;moreover,βis found to have a quadratic relation with abrasive hardness.The results of the erosion experiments show that abrasive hardness and erosion depth are quadratically related.By calculating the increase in surface energy after abrasive erosion crushing,it is found that abrasive hardness has a quadratic relation with surface energy and that the increases in erosion depth and surface energy consumption are basically identical.In conclusion,the effect is a soft abrasive impact when the ratio of abrasive hardness(Ha)to the material hardness(Hm)is<2.6,and it is a hard abrasive impact when Ha/Hm>3. 展开更多

In order to improve the energy level of fuel air explosive(FAE) with delayed secondary igniters, high energetic metal powders were added to liquid fuels mainly composed of ether and isopropyl nitrate.Metal powders’ explosive properties and reaction mechanisms in FAE were studied by high-speed video,pressure test system, and infrared thermal imager. The results show that compared with pure liquid fuels, the shock wave overpressure, maximum surface fireball temperature and high temperature duration of the mixture were significantly increased after adding high energetic metal powder. The overpressure values of the liquid-solid mixture at all measuring points were higher than that of the pure liquid fuels. And the maximum temperature of the fireball was up to 1700C, which was higher than that of the pure liquid fuels. After replacing 30% of aluminum powder with boron or magnesium hydride, the shock wave pressure of the mixture was further increased. The high heat of combustion of boron and the hydrogen released by magnesium hydride could effectively increase the blast effect of the mixture. The improvement of the explosion performance of boron was better than magnesium hydride. It shows that adding high energetic metal powder to liquid fuels can effectively improve the explosion performance of FAE. 展开更多

An improvement in the corrosion resistance of alloys at elevated temperature is a factor for their potential use in gas turbines. In this study, Co Ni Cr Al Y has been coated on the L605 alloy using air plasma spray(APS) and high-velocity oxygen fuel(HVOF) coating techniques to enhance its corrosion resistance. Hot corrosion studies were conducted on uncoated and coated samples in a molten salt environment at 850°C under cyclic conditions. Thermogravimetric analysis was used to determine the corrosion kinetics. The samples were subjected to scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction for further investigation. In coated samples, the formation of Al2O3 and Cr2O3 in the coating acts as a diffusion barrier that could resists the inward movement of the corrosive species present in the molten salt. Coated samples showed very less spallation, lower weight gain, less porosity, and internal oxidation as compared to uncoated sample.HVOF-coated sample showed greater corrosion resistance and inferred that this is the best technique under these conditions. 展开更多

A solid state H2S/air electrochemical cell having the configuration of H2S, (MoS2+NiS+Ag)/YSZ/Pt, air has been examined with different H2S flow rates and concentrations at atmospheric pressure and 750-850 ℃. Performance of the fuel cell was dependent on anode compartment H2S flow rate and concentration. The cell open-circuit voltage increased with increasing H2S flow rate. It was found that increasing both H2S flow rate and H2S concentration improved current-voltage and power density performance. This is resulted from improved gas diffusion in anode and increased concentration of anodic electroactive species. Operation at elevated H2S concentration improved the cell performance at a given gas flow rate. However, as low as 5% H2S in gas mixture can also be utilized as fuel feed to cells. Highest current and power densities, 17500mA·cm-2 and 200mW·cm-2, are obtained with pure H2S flow rate of 50ml·min-1 and air flow rate of 100ml·min-1 at 850℃. 展开更多

Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation(HDO)of biomass-derived oxy-compounds to advanced hydrocarbon fuels usually requires bifunctional catalysts containing metals and acidic sites.The appropriate tuning of metal and/or acidic active sites at interfaces of bifunctional catalysts can significantly improve catalyst activity and product selectivity.Here,4-trifuoromethyl salicylic acid(TFMSA),as a hydrothermal stable organic acid,was employed to tailor the bifunctional interface of Ru/γ-Al_(2)O_(3)to enhance the catalytic performance on converting lignin-derived phenols to jet fuel range cycloalkanes.More than 80%phenol was converted into cyclohexane at 230°C for 1 h over Ru/γ-Al_(2)O_(3)modified by TFMSA,which was about three times higher than that over unmodified Ru/γ-Al_(2)O_(3).X-ray diffraction(XRD),Transmission electron microscope(TEM),H2 chemisorption,and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS)elemental mapping results indicated that Ru nanoparticles and TFMSA were well distributed onγ-Al_(2)O_(3),and a nanoscale intimacy between Ru and TFMSA was reached.Meanwhile,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy after pyridine adsorption(Py-FT-IR)analysis proved that Brønsted acidic sites on the catalytic interfaces of TFMSA modified Ru/γ-Al_(2)O_(3)had been improved.Moreover,the kinetic and density functional theory(DFT)results suggested that the synergistic effects of adjacent Ru nanoparticles and acidic sites were crutial for promoting the rate-limiting conversion step of phenol HDO to cyclohexane. 展开更多

A new route was developed for the synthesis of renewable decalin with cyclopentanone which can be derived from lignocellulose.It was found that 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-octahydronaphthalene could be selectively produced by the hydrogenation/dehydration/rearrangement of [1,1-bi(cyclopentylidene)]-2-one(i.e.the selfaldol condensation product of cyclopentanone) over a dual-bed catalyst system.Among the investigated catalysts,the Ru/C and Amberlyst-15 resin exhibited the highest activities for the hydrogenation of [1,1-bi(cyclopentylidene)]-2-one to [1,1-bi(cyclopentan)]-2-ol and the dehydration/rearrangement of [1,1-bi(cyclopentan)]-2-ol to 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-octahydronaphthalene,respectively.Using Ru/C and Amberlyst-15 resin as the first bed and the second bed catalysts,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-octahydronaphthalene was directly produced in high carbon yield(83.7%) under mild conditions(393 K,1 MPa).After being hydrogenated,the1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-octahydronaphthalene was converted to decalin which can be used as additive to improve the thermal stability and volumetric heat value of jet fuel. 展开更多

An atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma jet generator using air flow as the feedstock gas was applied to decontaminate the chemical agent surrogates on the surface of aluminum, stainless steel or iron plate painted with alkyd or PVC. The experi- mental results of material decontamination show that the residual chemical agent on the material is lower than the permissible value of the National Military Standard of China. In order to test the corrosion effect of the plasma jet on different material surfaces in the decontamination pro-cess, corrosion tests for the materials of polymethyl methacrylate, neoprene, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene (PE), phenolic resin, iron plate painted with alkyd, stainless steel, aluminum, etc. were carried out, and relevant parameters were examined, including etiolation index, chroma- tism, loss of gloss, corrosion form, etc. The results show that the plasma jet is slightly corrosive for part of the materials, but their performances are not affected. A portable calculator, computer display, mainboard, circuit board of radiogram, and a hygrometer could work normally after being treated by the plasma jet. 展开更多

This numerical study investigates the effects of using a diluted fuel (50% natural gas and 50% N2) in an industrial furnace under several cases of conventional combustion (air with 21% O2 at 300 and 1273 K) and the highly preheated and diluted air (1273 K with 10% O2 and 90% N2) combustion (HPDAC) conditions using an in-house computer program. It was found that by applying a combined diluted fuel and oxidant instead of their uncombined and/or undiluted states, the best condition is obtained for the establishment of HPDAC's main unique features. These features are low mean and maximum gas temperature and high radiation/total heat transfer to gas and tubes; as well as more uniformity of theirs distributions which results in decrease in NOx pollutant formation and increase in furnace efficiency or energy saving. Moreover, a variety of chemical flame shape, the process fluid and tubes walls temperatures profiles, the required regenerator efficiency and finally the concentration and velocity patterns have been also qualitatively/quantitatively studied. 展开更多

To prevent the oxygen starvation and improve the system output performance, an adaptive inverse control (AIC) strategy is developed to regulate the air supply flow of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system in this paper. The PEMFC stack and the air supply system including a compressor and a supply manifold are modeled for the purpose of performance analysis and controller design. A recurrent fuzzy neural network (RFNN) is utilized to identify the inverse model of the controlled system and generates a suitable control input during the abrupt step change of external disturbances. Compared with the PI controller, numerical simulations are performed to validate the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed AIC strategy. 展开更多

Most of the traditional taxi path planning studies assume that the aircraft is in uniform speed,and the optimization goal is the shortest taxi time.Although it is easy to solve,it does not consider the changes in the speed profile of the aircraft when turning,and the shortest taxi time does not necessarily bring the best taxi fuel consumption.In this paper,the number of turns is considered,and the improved A*algorithm is used to obtain the P static paths with the shortest sum of the straight-line distance and the turning distance of the aircraft as the feasible taxi paths.By balancing taxi time and fuel consumption,a set of Pareto optimal speed profiles are generated for each preselected path to predict the 4-D trajectory of the aircraft.Based on the 4-D trajectory prediction results,the conflict by the occupied time window in the taxiing area is detected.For the conflict aircraft,based on the priority comparison,the waiting or changing path is selected to solve the taxiing conflict.Finally,the conflict free aircraft taxiing path is generated and the area occupation time window on the path is updated.The experimental results show that the total taxi distance and turn time of the aircraft are reduced,and the fuel consumption is reduced.The proposed method has high practical application value and is expected to be applied in real-time air traffic control decision-making in the future. 展开更多

Antioxidants addition is believed as a facile and effective way to improve jet fuel thermal oxidation stability.However,amine antioxidants,as one of the most important antioxidants,have not received sufficient attention in the field of jet fuel autoxidation yet.Herein,the inhibition efficiency and mechanism of decane and exo-tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene(THDCPD)oxidation by di-4-tert-butylphenylamine(diarylamine)was experimentally and theoretically investigated.The results show that diarylamine can significantly inhibit decane oxidation but is less efficient for THDCPD oxidation,which is attributed to the higher energy barrier of retro-carbonyl-ene reaction(rate-determining step)in THDCPD than that in decane during diarylamine regeneration.However,the addition of diarylamine will cause undesirable color change after accelerated oxidation and produce slightly more deposits during high-temperature thermal oxidative stress for both decane and THDCPD.The results provide significant implications for the future design of effective antioxidant additives for high-performance jet fuel. 展开更多

Photo ionization plays a critical role in the formation and propagation of atmospheric pressure plasma jet plumes.But in experiments,it is very difficult to observe the photo ionization due to its relative lower density of photo electrons.In the present study,we develop a portable cold air plasma jet device and observe the ionization wave in adc spark air plasma jet.The discharge images acquired by an ICCD camera show that the ionization wave front performs as a quickly moving bright ball.Breakdown could take place at another side of the quartz plate or pork tissue layer(6 mm thick),which suggests that the ionization should be attributed to photo ionization.The laser schlieren images indicate there is propagation of a shock wave along with the plasma bullet.Based on the photo ionization theory and the photo-electric measurement,the direct photo ionization and multistage photo ionization are the main factors in charge of generating the cold air plasma jet.In addition,the plasma jet outside of the cathode nozzle is colder than 320 K and can be touched safely by a human.In view of the plasma jet including a large amount of active particles,such as NO,O,OH,emitted photons,etc,the proposed portable cold air plasma jet device could be qualified for plasma bio-medicine applications. 展开更多
