Blasting operations, which are crucial to open-pit mine production due to their simplicity and efficiency, require precise control through accurate vibration velocity calculations. The conventional Sadowski formula mainly focuses on blast center distance but neglects the amplification effect of blasting vibration waves by terraced terrain, from which the calculated blasting vibration velocities are smaller than the actual values, affecting the safety of the project. To address this issue, our model introduces the influences of slope and time into Sadowski formula to measure safety through blast vibration displacement. In the northern section of the open-pit quartz mine in Jinchang City,Gansu Province,China, the data of a continuous blasting slope project are referred to.Our findings reveal a noticeable vibration amplification effect during blasting when a multi-stage slope platform undergoes a sudden cross-sectional change near the upper overhanging surface. The amplification vibration coefficient increases with height, while vibration waves within rocks decrease from bottom to top.Conversely, platforms without distinct crosssectional changes exhibit no pronounced amplification during blasting. In addition, the vibration intensity decreases with distance as the rock height difference change propagates. The results obtained by the proposed blast vibration displacement equation incorporating slope shape influence closely agree with real-world scenarios.According to Pearson correlation coefficient(PPMCC)analysis, the average accuracy rate of our model is 88.84%,which exceeds the conventional Sadowski formula(46.92%). 展开更多

In this paper, a new method is proposed to study the mechanism of charge collection in single event transient (SET) production in 90 nm bulk complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology. We find that different from the case in the pMOSFET, the parasitic bipolar amplification effect (bipolar effect) in the balanced inverter does not exist in the nMOSFET after the ion striking. The influence of the suhstrate process on the bipolar effect is also studied in the pMOSFET. We find that the bipolar effect can be effectively mitigated by a buried deep P+-well layer and can be removed by a buried SO2 layer. 展开更多

Dynamic failure of rock masses around deep tunnels, such as fault-slip rockburst and seismic-induced collapse, can pose a significant threat to tunnel construction safety. One of the most significant factors that control the accuracy of its risk assessment is the estimation of the ground motion around a tunnel caused by seismicity events. In general, the characteristic parameters of ground motion are estimated in terms of empirical scaling laws. However, these scaling laws make it difficult to accurately estimate the near-field ground motion parameters because the roles of control factors, such as tunnel geometry, damage zone distribution, and seismic source parameters, are not considered. For this, the finite fracturing seismic source model(FFSSM)proposed in this study is used to simulate the near-field ground motion characteristics around deep tunnels. Then, the amplification effects of ground motion caused by the interaction between seismic waves and deep tunnels and corresponding control factors are studied. The control effects of four factors on the near-field ground motion amplification effect are analyzed, including the main seismic source wavelength, tunnel span, tunnel shape, and range of damage zones. An empirical formula for the maximum amplification factor(a_(m))of the near-field ground motion around deep tunnels is proposed, which consists of four control factors,i.e.the wavelength control factor(F_(λ)),tunnel span factor(F_(D)),tunnel shape factor(F_(s))and excavation damage factor(F_(d)).This empirical formula provides an easy approach for accurately estimating the ground motion parameters in seismicityprone regimes and the rock support design of deep tunnels under dynamic loads. 展开更多

A cascading failure of landslide dams caused by strong earthquakes or torrential rains in mountainous river valleys can pose great threats to people’s lives, properties, and infrastructures. In this study, based on the three-dimensional Reynoldsaveraged Navier-Stokes equations(RANS),the renormalization group(RNG)k-εturbulence model, suspended and bed load transport equations, and the instability discriminant formula of dam breach side slope, and the explicit finite volume method(FVM),a detailed numerical simulation model for calculating the hydro-morphodynamic characteristics of cascading dam breach process has been developed. The developed numerical model can simulate the breach hydrograph and the dam breach morphology evolution during the cascading failure process of landslide dams.A model test of the breaches of two cascading landslide dams has been used as the validation case. The comparison of the calculated and measured results indicates that the breach hydrograph and the breach morphology evolution process of the upstream and downstream dams are generally consistent with each other, and the relative errors of the key breaching parameters,i.e.,the peak breach flow and the time to peak of each dam,are less than±5%.Further,the comparison of the breach hydrographs of the upstream and downstream dams shows that there is an amplification effect of the breach flood on the cascading landslide dam failures.Three key parameters,i.e.,the distance between the upstream and the downstream dams, the river channel slope, and the downstream dam height, have been used to study the flood amplification effect. The parameter sensitivity analyses show that the peak breach flow at the downstream dam decreases with increasing distance between the upstream and the downstream dams, and the downstream dam height.Further, the peak breach flow at the downstream dam first increases and then decreases with steepening of the river channel slope. When the flood caused by the upstream dam failure flows to the downstream dam,it can produce a surge wave that overtops and erodes the dam crest, resulting in a lowering of the dam crest elevation. This has an impact on the failure occurrence time and the peak breach flow of the downstream dam.The influence of the surge wave on the downstream dam failure process is related to the volume of water that overtops the dam crest and the erosion characteristics of dam material. Moreover, the cascading failure case of the Xiaogangjian and Lower Xiaogangjian landslide dams has also been used as the representative case for validating the model. In comparisons of the calculated and measured breach hydrographs and final breach morphologies, the relative errors of the key dam breaching parameters are all within±10%,which verify the rationality of the model is applicable to real-world cases.Overall, the numerical model developed in this study can provide important technical support for the risk assessment and emergency treatment of failures of cascading landslide dams. 展开更多

In this study, the Beibu earth fissure site in the northeastern part of Weihe Basin, which contains four nearly parallel earth fissures, was studied.A long straight microtremor measuring line, containing 49 measuring points across four earth fissures, was established to investigate the dynamic response of this site using Fourier spectrum, response acceleration spectrum,Arias intensity, and HVSR analyses. The main results are as follows:(1)The fundamental frequencies of 44 measuring points obtained from HVSR analysis are concentrated within 1.67 Hz-2.25 Hz,and the existence of the earth fissures has little effect on the fundamental frequency changes.(2)There is an amplification effect near a single earth fissure. The dynamic responses are large at the measuring points near the earth fissure, and the values decrease with increasing distance from the earth fissure. In areas between two adjacent earth fissures, these values decrease and are even lower than those in sites without amplification effects.(3)In this earth fissure site, the general area(or less affected area)and affected areas were delineated based on the amplification effect. In engineering applications, construction design should avoid these affected areas and existing structures should be reinforced to satisfy the seismic fortification requirements. 展开更多

With the change of seasons, the shear strength of saline soil subgrade filler will change with the change of external temperature, which will aggravate the adverse effects of seismic on the subgrade. To explore the influence of seismic action on the stability of saline soil subgrade under the influence of temperature on the strength of saline soil subgrade filler, this paper first carried out saline soil shear tests at different temperatures to obtain the influence of temperature on the shear strength of saline soil. Then, the temperature field of the saline soil subgrade was simulated, and then based on the subgrade isothermal stratification model and FLAC3D, the displacement and acceleration amplification effects of seismic action on the shady slope, sunny slope and subgrade of saline soil subgrade in different months were analyzed. The following conclusions were finally drawn: under the action of seismic, In the process of the change of subgrade temperature of Qarhan-Golmud Expressway between 7.7°C and 27°C, the change of saline soil cohesion is the main factor affecting the stability of subgrade slope, and the maximum and minimum values of subgrade surface settlement appear in September and June of each year, respectively. In August, the differences of settlement between the shady slope and the sunny slope shoulder of the subgrade were the largest, and the acceleration of the shady slope and the sunny slope and the inside of the subgrade changed most significantly in the vertical direction. Special attention should be paid to the seismic early warning in the above key months; In the range from both sides of the shoulder to the centerline of the roadbed, the acceleration amplification effect starts to increase significantly from about 3m from the centerline of the roadbed to the centerline, so it is necessary to pay attention to the seismic design of this range. 展开更多

The Niumiangou landslide was the largest landslide triggered by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, which was significantly affected by the amplification effect of seismic acceleration. The ringshear experiments indicated that the materials in the source area of the Niumiangou landslide were subjected to friction degradation under a big shear displacement, which may result in rapid movement of the landslide. In order to better understand the landslide movement and study the effect of the friction degradation on movement mechanisms, the dynamic process of Niumiangou landslide was simulated with a new numerical method, which combines the finite difference method(FDM)and the discontinuous deformation analysis(DDA).First, the FDM was used to study the initiation time, amplification effect and velocity of the landslide.Afterwards, these initiation velocities were applied to the blocks in the DDA model by corresponding coordination in the FDM model.A displacementdependent friction model of the sliding surface was incorporated into DDA code to further understand the kinetic behavior of the landslide. The results show that the displacement-dependent friction strongly decreases the friction coefficient of sliding surface under a big displacement, which can obviously promote the run-out and velocity of landslide. The model output well matches the topographic map formed by the landslide. This implies that the proposed model can be applied to the simulation of earthquake-induced landslides with amplification effect, and the friction degradation model is important to clarify the movement mechanism of high-speed and long-distance landslides. 展开更多

This study conducted microtremor testing along six survey lines that cross three typical earth fissures in the Datong basin to determine the dynamic response characteristics of earth fissure sites with regard to the Fourier amplitude spectrum, response spectrum, and Arias intensity. The results show the following.(1)The predominant frequency of an earth fissure site is mainly affected by the thickness and the shear wave velocity of the soil layer and is minimally effected by the presence of an earth fissure.(2)Earth fissures have a pronounced amplification effect on dynamic response.Fourier amplitude, response acceleration, and Arias intensity are high near an earth fissure and decrease with an increase in distance from the earth fissure, tending toward stability at a distance of 20 m.(3)The area that is seriously affected by this amplification is within 6-8 m of an earth fissure, and the general affected area is farther out than this,to a distance of 25 m.(4)New construction should be avoided in an area affected by the amplification, and existing buildings in general and seriously affected areas need to be reinforced to increase their seismic fortification intensity. 展开更多

A comparison of the temperature dependence of the P-hit single event transient (SET) in a two-transistor (2T) inverter with that in a three-transistor (3T) inverter is carried out based on a three-dimensional numerical simulation. Due to the significantly distinct mechanisms of the single event change collection in the 2T and the 3T inverters, the temperature plays different roles in the SET production and propagation. The SET pulse will be significantly broadened in the 2T inverter chain while will be compressed in the 3T inverter chain as temperature increases. The investigation provides a new insight into the SET mitigation under the extreme environment, where both the high temperature and the single event effects should be considered. The 3T inverter layout structure (or similar layout structures) will be a better solution for spaceborne integrated circuit design for extreme environments. 展开更多

Volume parameter is the basic content of a spatial body object morphology analysis. However, the challenge lies in the volume calculation of irregular objects. The point cloud slicing method proposed in this study effectively works in calculating the volume of the point cloud of the spatial object obtained through three-dimensional laser scanning(3DLS).In this method,a uniformly spaced sequent slicing process is first conducted in a specific direction on the point cloud of the spatial object obtained through 3DLS.A series of discrete point cloud slices corresponding to the point cloud bodies are then obtained.Subsequently, the outline boundary polygon of the point cloud slicing is searched one by one in accordance with the slicing sequence and areas of the polygon. The point cloud slice is also calculated. Finally, the individual point cloud section volume is calculated through the slicing areas and the adjacent slicing gap. Thus, the total volume of the scanned spatial object can be calculated by summing up the individual volumes.According to the results and analysis of the calculated examples, the slice-based volume-calculating method for the point cloud of irregular objects obtained through 3DLS is correct, concise in process, reliable in results, efficient in calculation methods, and controllable on accuracy. This method comes as a good solution to the volume calculation of irregular objects. 展开更多

Under the background of global species extinction, the impact of epidemic diseases on wild animal protection is increasingly prominent. Here,we review and synthesize the literature on this topic, and discuss the relationship between diseases and biodiversity.Diseases usually reduce species diversity by decreasing or extinction of species populations, but also accelerate species evolution and promote species diversity. At the same time, species diversity can regulate disease outbreaks through dilution or amplification effects. The synergistic effect of human activities and global change is emphasized, which further aggravates the complex relationship between biodiversity and diseases. Finally,we emphasize the importance of active surveillance of wild animal diseases, which can protect wild animals from potential diseases, maintain population size and genetic variation, and reduce the damage of diseases to the balance of the whole ecosystem and human health. Therefore,we suggest that a background survey of wild animal populations and their pathogens should be carried out to assess the impact of potential outbreaks on the population or species level. The mechanism of dilution and amplification effect between species diversity and diseases of wild animals should be further studied to provide a theoretical basis and technical support for human intervention measures to change biodiversity. Most importantly,we should closely combine the protection of wild animals with the establishment of an active surveillance, prevention, and control system for wild animal epidemics,in an effort to achieve a win-win situation between wild animal protection and disease control. 展开更多

A series of housing collapses and other serious damage was caused by the 2008 Wenchuan M_(S)8.0 earthquake in the seismic intensity Ⅵ areas of the Loess Plateau, which is hundreds of kilometers away from the epicenter, and which showed a remarkable seismic intensity anomaly. The seismic disasters are closely related to the seismic response characteristics of the site, therefore, the systematic study of the far-field seismic response law of the Wenchuan earthquake in the Loess Plateau is of great significance to prevent the far-field disaster of great earthquake. In this paper, the seismic acceleration records of several bedrock stations and loess stations from the seismogenic fault of the Wenchuan earthquake to the Loess Plateau were collected, and the attenuation law of ground motion along the propagation path and the characteristics of seismic response on the loess site are studied, and the mechanism of amplification effect of ground motion is analyzed based on the dynamic feature parameters of the loess site obtained through the HVSR method. Taking a typical loess site of thick deposit as the prototype, a series of shaking table tests of dynamic response of loess site models with different thicknesses were carried out.Amplification effect, spectral characteristics of acceleration in model sites were analyzed under the action of a farfield seismic wave of the Wenchuan earthquake. The results show that seismic attenuation on the propagation path along the NE strike of the seismogenic fault to the Loess Plateau is slower than that in other directions, and the predominant period range of ground motion on bedrock site of the Loess Plateau presents broadband characteristics. Because the natural periods of loess sites with thick deposits are within the predominant period range of bedrock input wave, loess sites appear significant amplification effect of ground motion, the horizontal acceleration of ground motion exceeds 0.1 g, the seismic intensity reaches 7°. The thicker the loess deposit is, the more significant the change of spectral characteristics of ground motion on loess sites, and the narrower the predominant period range of ground motion becomes, and the closer it is to the natural period of loess sites. Therefore, for some old houses on thick loess sites, the poor seismic performance and strong seismic response eventually led to their collapses and damages because their natural periods are very close to the predominant period of ground motion of the Wenchuan earthquake on thick loess sites; For these damaged high-rise buildings, the resonance effect might be the main reason for their damages because their natural periods are included in the predominant period range of ground motion of the Wenchuan earthquake on thick loess sites. These research results would provide a basis for seismic disasters prediction and evaluation and seismic design of construction engineering in the Loess Plateau. 展开更多

The plane-wave assumption for incident SH waves can be a good approximation for cylindrical and spherical waves radiated from finite sources, even when the source is as close as twice the size of the inhomogeneity, and when the source and the inhomogeneity are described within the same coordinate system. However, in a more general setting, and when the fault's radiation pattern must be considered, the plane-wave approximation may not yield satisfactory answers for arbitrary orientation of the fault. Jalali et al. (2015) demonstrated this for a semi-cylindrical, sedimentary valley, and in this study we extend their results to a case in which the semi-circular, sedimentary valley is replaced by a canyon. We describe the effects of incident cylindrical waves on the amplitudes of surface motion in and near the semi-cylindrical canyon when the causative faults are at different distances and have different curvatures and orientations. 展开更多
