Risk assessment for these health outcomes requires the use of biomarkers to link exposures to disease. Biological markers of susceptability, external dose, internal dose, biologically effective dose, early or late biological responses, altered reproductive or developmental function, and reproductive or developmental disease are introduced. Using these biomarkers it is possible to define a biologically based risk assessment methodology for reproductive and developmental toxicity. Risk assessment for reproductive toxicity requires definition of male and female fecundity, couple-specific factors, spontaneous abortion, rate, and other factors. Using using sperm count as a biomarker for male fecundity, an example of a reproductive risk assessment using biomarkers is performed.展开更多

Aging is then defined as consisting of a combination of functional declines observed in every organism system, occurring at different ages for different systems (Shock, 1985). One measure of this decline is death, and mortality is often used as a surrogate for aging. The sources of endogenous展开更多

Neurotoxic effects may be permanent or reversible, produced by neuropharmacological or neurodegenerative properties of a neurotoxicant, or the result of direct or indirect actions on the nervous system (ICON, 1990). Adverse effects include side effects (unwanted effects) or effects due to overdosing; functional or structural responses that promote compensation to restore normal function; or any展开更多

In the 18th century, for example, Percival Pott (1775) noted a high incidence of scrotal cancer in chimney sweeps, which he attributed to their exposure to soot and a concomitant lack of bathing. Subsequent epidemiological studies have identified a number of additional carcinogenic agents, including aromatic amine-based dyes (Case et al., 1954), cigarette smoke (Wynder and Graham, 1950), asbestos (Doll, 1955), vinyl chloride (Creech and展开更多

Their love and care for the people have featured their governance and won extensive acclamation in China and the world. On March 18, the top legislature of China, the National People’s Congress, elected Hu Jintao President of State and Wen Jiabao Premier of the State Council. The new leadership of China was formed in the applause of NPC deputies. Right after the new leadership took its office, a tough challenge confronted them as a series of disasters broke out suddenly. In spring, the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) rapidly swept over half of the country within a month; in summer, an unprecedented flood hit South China; then earthquakes erupted in Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang and Yunnan in succession. In front of these disasters, the new Chinese leaders remained calm and confident, with resolute measures they successfully brought the situation under control and tid-展开更多

Published in September by the China Social Sciences Press, this book is the second volume of a series,Chinese Diplomatic Studies. It not only analyzes the evolution of Chinese diplomacy over the past 60 years but also predicts what the future will hold. Recently,Beijing Review reporters Ding Ying and Yu Yan spoke about the book with its editor in chief Dr. Wang Yizhou, who is also deputy director of the Institute of World Economics and Politics at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and a professor at the School of International Studies,Peking University.展开更多
