Objective: To evaluate whether herbs of supplementing Qi and nourishing Yin combined with chemotherapy (versus chemotherapy alone) improve survival, increase tumor response, improve performance status or reduce chemotherapy toxicity in patients with lung cancer. Methods: Searching the randomized controlled trials (RCT) studies from the databases (China HowNet database, Wan Fang database, VIP database, Master Thesis and Pubmed) between January 2013 and January 2017. RevMan 5.3 software was used to evaluate the quality of these collected papers. Results: Of 48 potentially relevant publications, 10 randomized studies representing 691 patients met inclusion criteria with 369 cases in the supplementing Qi and nourishing Yin plus Chemotherapy group (Herbs + Chem group) and 322 cases in Chemotherapy group (Chem only group). There were significant differences between Herbs + Chem group and Chem only group in improving the treatment efficacy and reducing the side effects of chemotherapy (P 〈 0.001 for all). There were also significant differences between the two groups in tumor response and quality of life (P 〈 0.001 for all). Conclusion: Herbs of supplementing Qi and nourishing Yin may increase chemotherapy effectiveness, reduce chemotherapy toxicity and improve the quality of life of patients with lung cancer when combined with chemotherapy. 展开更多

Objective: To observe the effect of TCM therapy for detoxification, removing stasis, and nourishing yin on corticosteroid-induced hyperlipemia in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and to investigate its mechanism. Methods: One hundred and seventy patients with SLE were randomly assigned to the integrative medicine group (IM group) and the Western medicine group (WM group), 85 in each group. Also, 30 healthy subjects selected from blood donors were enrolled in the normal control (NC) group. All patients were treated mainly with prednisone, while those in the IM group were given TCM therapy additionally, and the therapeutic course for both groups was 6 successive months. The changes of serum total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C) and apolipoprotein A (ApoA) were determined and observed. A 2-year follow-up study was carried out in 16 patients of the WM group and 25 of the IM group. Results: Before treatment, no significant difference had been found among the three groups in the serum levels of lipids and lipoproteins. After the 6-month treatment, as compared with the WM group, the IM group showed lower levels of TC, TG, LDL-C, and VLDL-C (P〈0.05 or P〈0.01) and higher levels of HDL-C and ApoA (P〈0.05). A similar effect was also shown by the follow-up study in the IM group (P〈0.05 or P〈0.01). Conclusion: TCM therapy for detoxification, removing stasis, and nourishing yin can effectively regulate the levels of serum lipids and lipoproteins in preventing and treating SLE patients with corticosteroid-induced hyperlipemia. 展开更多

Objective: To explore the therapeutic effect and its mechanism mainly using traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) of Replenishing Qi and Nourishing Yin (RQNY) with a small dosage of Tapazole for treatment of Graves’ disease (GD).Methods: The changes of thyroid function and the activity of sodium pump of human erythrocyte in the patients with Graves’ disease were observed and compared before and after treatment between the treated group (42 cases) by combining treatment mainly using TCM of RQNY and a small amount of Tapazole and a control group (42 cases) by Tapazole alone. Results: After treatment for half a year, one and two years, the serum levels of T3, T4 in above two groups were markedly decreased than those of before treatment, the therapeutic effect of treated group was superior to that of the control group. The activity of sodium pump in human erythrocyte in the GD patients was obviously higher than that of normal group and that of before treatment. After treatment for one and two years mainly by TCM or western medicine, the erythrocyte sodium pump activity was obviously lower than that of normal group and that of before treatment. The decrease of erythrocyte sodium pump activity in the treated group was markedly lower than that in the control group. 展开更多

Radiotherapy is an essential method in the comprehensive treatment of malignant tumors. However, radiation proctitis(RP)is a common complication of pelvic tumors after radiotherapy.Due to RP's various etiology and complex pathogenesis,it is currently no standard for traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)treatment.Professor Yuan-hong Zhao believes that refractory RP,which is named chronic hemorrhagic radiation proctitis(CHRP),should be classified as"Intestinal Wind Bleeding"(Bleeding like a note before defecation, bright red blood,no swelling and pain in the anus)and"Intestinal Afflux"(Refers to the symptoms of pus and blood in the lower mucus, similar to ulcerative colitis, peptic ulcer and other diseases in modern medicine.)in TCM.The critical pathogenesis of CHRP lies in local stasis and collaterals injury of intestinal collaterals. In general,it is a syndrome of excess and scarcity.External treatment with TCM is the preferred treatment strategy for CHRP,and the primary way is to disperse blood stasis and detoxify and nourish the intestinal collaterals. 展开更多

Objective: To probe the effects of qi-supplementing and yin-nourishing therapy (blood-increasing decoction and blood generating powder) on chronic thrombocytopenia. Methods: Two hundred patients with chronic thrombocytopenia were randomly divided into control (n=100) and test groups (n = 100) with Amino-polypeptide as a basic treatment for both. Test group patients consumed a blood-increasing decoction and blood-generating powder for 1-3 months. Improvements in platelet counts and TCM syndrome were observed. Results: One hundred and sixty-four (80 in the test group and 84 in the control group) of 189 total participants were treated for 3 months. The total effective rate in improving TCM syndrome was 95.00% in the test group and 79.76% in the control group (P<0.05). There was significant difference (P<0.05) in the accumulated score of TCM syndrome between the two groups treated at different time points. The total effective rate of platelet counts was 86.25% in the test group and 59.52% in the control group (P<0.05). There was a significant difference in platelet counts before and after treatment in the two groups (P<0.05). There was no significant differences in platelet count between the two groups treated for 1-2 months; however, a significant difference was found between the two groups after treatment for 3 months (P<0.05). Conclusions: After a 3-month treatment of chronic thrombocytopenia patients with qi-supplementing and yin-nourishing therapy, TCM syndrome was improved and platelet counts increased with no obvious side effects, and the quality of life of the participants was enhanced with noticeable long-term curative effects. 展开更多
