In this study, the tension–compression asymmetry of the BCC Al Cr Fe Co Ni HEA nanowire is investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. The results show a significant asymmetry in both the yield and flow stresses, with BCC HEA nanowire stronger under compression than under tension. The strength asymmetry originates from the completely different deformation mechanisms in tension and compression. In compression, atomic amorphization dominates plastic deformation and contributes to the strengthening, while in tension, deformation twinning prevails and weakens the HEA nanowire. The tension–compression asymmetry exhibits a clear trend of increasing with the increasing nanowire cross-sectional edge length and decreasing temperature. In particular, the compressive strengths along the [001] and [111] crystallographic orientations are stronger than the tensile counterparts, while the [110] crystallographic orientation shows the exactly opposite trend. The dependences of tension–compression asymmetry on the cross-sectional edge length, crystallographic orientation, and temperature are explained in terms of the deformation behavior of HEA nanowire as well as its variations caused by the change in these influential factors. These findings may deepen our understanding of the tension–compression asymmetry of the BCC HEA nanowires.展开更多

In this motif, two nodes(input nodes) receive a weak input signal and send it unidirectionally to the third node(output node). Here, we change the motif's unidirectional couplings(feedforward) to bidirectional couplings(feedforward and feedback working together). We find that a small asymmetric coupling, in which the feedforward effect is stronger than the feedback effect, may enable the three-node motif to go through two distinct dynamic transitions, giving rise to a double resonant signal response. We present an analytical description of the double resonance, which agrees with the numerical findings.展开更多

Among the known effects of these alterations is developmental instability via fluctuating asymmetry (FA). The utilization of FA data is a simple yet effective method to evaluate the toxic effects of cadmium on the stability of development. This study used climbing perch (Anabas testudieneus) to assess the FA in the diameter of the eye because of low-level cadmium exposure. The left and right sides of the traits were measured once every four weeks for 16 weeks. The average measurements from both sides of the traits were used to calculate the FA value. Results found that the highest mean FA for the diameter of the eye was obtained in the highest treatment group, 0.015 mg/L. The results also indicate that increasing concentrations of cadmium exposure had a statistically significant effect on the FA of eye diameter. There was also a statistically significant interaction between the duration of exposure and treatment groups in FA of the diameter of the eye. The results from the study indicate that prolonged exposure to sub-lethal concentrations of cadmium can cause significant effects on the normal development of eyes in Anabas testudineus. This study can add to the body of research regarding fluctuating asymmetry as a tool to study developmental toxicants and assess other bilateral organs.展开更多

Similarly, a universe consisting of antiprotons, antineutrons, and positrons with electrical neutrality is consistent with an equal number of c and preons. Hence, any combination of such matter-antimatter compositions is also consistent with an equal number of c and preons and overall electrical neutrality. It is proposed that the difference observed in baryon-antibaryon number density relative to photon number density, ~5 × 10-10, is due to allocation of preons between matter and antimatter during preon condensation into normal matter. Three approaches of increasing rigor and complexity are considered: 1) an allocation at times corresponding to the Planck temperature due to fluctuations, 2) an allocation at times corresponding to quark formation due to preon bonding, and 3) an allocation at times corresponding to the electroweak scale. All approaches can give the correct order of magnitude of the asymmetry assuming out-of-equili-brium freeze-out and a slight and allowed charge (C) asymmetry in preon condensation in a self-consistent quantum field theory. Sakharov’s baryon non-conservation condition is evidently circumvented with these approaches, because they assume another level of matter (preons) which is present before quark formation. Thus, preons can provide an elementary explanation of primordial matter-antimatter asymmetry. A relationship between Higgs boson states and preons is proposed.展开更多

The yield strength(YS) and ultimate compression strength(UCS) as well as the compression ductility(CD) were simultaneously raised by prior torsion at room temperature. The CD was further enhanced by subsequent annealing. Also, the torqued sample followed by annealing experienced a rising CD with the increase in prior strain, leading to the maximum true strain of 0.279, which is twice that of the as-annealed original one. The sample showed a largely reduced tension-compression yield asymmetry by subjecting to pre-torsion alone or combined with a subsequent annealing. The enhanced ductility and reduced asymmetry are attributed to the development of a gradient microstructure with refined grains, and also randomization of the weakened texture due to torsion and subsequent annealing.展开更多

The photo-electron left-right asymmetry parameter as a function of carrier-envelop (CE) phase of few-cycle pulses is attained. We confirm the asymmetry of photoelectron distribution in H- photodetachment and find that the maximal asymmetry parameter of H- is equal to that of H atom under the same conditions but the corresponding CE phases are quite different. Thus a CE phase shift appears. Compared to that of H atom and field free electron, the zero asymmetry CE phase shift is sensitively affected by Coulomb field. The Coulomb effect on the asymmetry of H- photodetachment mainly behaves in the CE phase shift of H- instead of the amplitude of asymmetry parameter curve.展开更多

文摘We investigated the asymmetric tension-compression(T-C)behavior of ZA21 bars with bimodal and uniform structures through axial tension and compression tests. The results show that the yield strengths of bars having bimodal structure are 206.42 and 140.28 MPa under tension and compression, respectively, which are higher than those of bars having uniform structure with tensile and compressive yield strength of 183.71 and 102.86 MPa,respectively.Prismatic slip and extension twinning under tension and basal slip and extension twinning under compression dominate the yield behavior and induce the T-C asymmetry. However, due to the basal slip activated in fine grains under tension and the inhibition of extension twinning by fine grains under compression, the bimodal structure possesses a lower T-C asymmetry(0.68)compared to the uniform structure(0.56).Multiple extension twins occur during deformation, and the selection of twin variants depends on the Schmid factor of the six variants activated by parent grains.Furthermore, the strengthening effect of the bimodal structure depends on the grain size and the ratio of coarse and fine grains.

文摘In an arcjet thruster, the cathode and constrictor degrade with time, and the electrical arc discharge may become unsymmetrical. In this work,a three-dimensional numerical model of a hydrogen plasma arcjet is developed and validated to study the effect of unsymmetrical electric arc discharge on thruster performance. The unsymmetrical arc discharge is realized by introducing a radial shift of the cathode so that the cathode tip offset is 80μm(25%of the constrictor radius).Simulations are conducted for both axially centered cathode(coaxial)and off-centered cathode(non-coaxial)configurations with identical propellant flow rates and input current.Simulations show asymmetrical arc discharge in the non-coaxial cathode configuration, resulting in azimuthally asymmetric Joule heating, species concentrations, and velocity field. This asymmetry continues as the plasma expands in the divergent section of the nozzle.Temperature, species concentrations, and axial velocity exhibit asymmetric radial distribution at the nozzle exit. The computed Joule heating was found to reduce with cathode shift, and consequently, the thrust and specific impulse of the thruster was decreased by about 6.6%.In the case of the non-coaxial cathode, geometric asymmetry also induces a small side thrust.

文摘In this work,an as-rolled AZ31 square bar with c-axis//ND(normal direction)texture was used.Side-rolling and reciprocating torsion were performed to treat the bar.Microstructure evolution and tensile-compressive properties were investigated in detail.Initial rolled AZ31 bar exhibits a large yield asymmetry along the rolling direction(RD).Reciprocating torsion can generate extension twins to introduce twin boundaries and twin-texture.The twin structure can reduce yield asymmetry. However, only limited regions in the rolled AZ31 bar can be twinned during torsion.Pre-side-rolling along the transverse direction(TD)can generate two texture components(c-axis//TD texture and c-axis//ND texture)by introducing profuse{10–12}twins.Such dual texture components help increase the regions which are favorable for twinning during torsion. Finally, combining side-rolling and reciprocating torsion generates hybrid{10–12}twins structure on the entire cross-section,resulting in a remarkably low yield asymmetry. The relevant mechanisms were discussed in detail.

文摘Effects of Gd addition on the strain hardening behavior and yield asymmetry of pure Mg are investigated by subjecting extruded pure Mg,Mg–5Gd,and Mg–15Gd(all in wt%)to tension and compression tests along the extrusion direction(ED).As the amount of Gd added to pure Mg increases, the basal texture tilts toward the ED and the distribution of c-axes of grains becomes randomized.Under tension, the strain hardening rates of all the materials decrease until fracture. However, under compression, the strain hardening rate increases in the early stage of deformation in pure Mg and Mg–5Gd,whereas it continuously decreases in Mg–15Gd.Pure Mg exhibits considerably high tension-compression yield asymmetry, with a compressive yield strength(CYS)to tensile yield strength(TYS)ratio of 0.4.In contrast,Mg–5Gd exhibits excellent yield symmetry with CYS/TYS of 0.9 and Mg–15Gd exhibits reversed yield asymmetry with CYS/TYS of 1.2.Underlying mechanisms of these drastically different Gd-addition-induced deformation behaviors of the materials are discussed in terms of the crystallographic distribution of grains and the relative activation stresses of basal slip, prismatic slip, pyramidal slip,and{10–12}twinning under tension and compression.

文摘It has been recognized that salinity variability in the tropical Pacific is closely related to the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation(IPO).Here,we use model simulations from 1900 to 2017 to illustrate obvious asymmetries of salinity variability in the tropical Pacific during positive and negative IPO phases. The amplitude of salinity variability in the tropical Pacific during positive IPO phases is larger than that during negative IPO phases, with a more westward shift of a large Sea Surface Salinity(SSS)anomaly along the equator.Salinity budget analyses show that the asymmetry of salinity variability during positive and negative IPO phases is dominated by the difference in the surface forcing associated with the freshwater flux[FWF,precipitation(P)minus evaporation(E)],with a contribution of 40%–50%near the dateline on the equator. Moreover, the relationships between the salinity variability and its budget terms also show differences in their leadlag correlations during positive and negative IPO phases. These differences in salinity variability during different IPO phases produce asymmetric effects on seawater density which can reduce or enhance upper-ocean stratification. Therefore, the salinity effects may modulate the intensity of El Nino-Southern Oscillation(ENSO),resulting in an enhanced(reduced)El Nino but a reduced(enhanced)La Ni?a during positive(negative)IPO phases by 1.6℃psu^(-1)(1.3℃psu^(-1)),respectively.It is suggested that the asymmetry of salinity variability may be related to the recent change in ENSO amplitude associated with the IPO,which can help elucidate ENSO diversity.

文摘A homogenous microstructure of ultrafine-grained (UFG) commercially pure (CP) Ti characterized by equiaxed grains/subgrains with an average grain size of about 150 nm and strong prismatic fiber texture were obtained after 4 passes of equal channel angular pressing (ECAP).Tension–compression asymmetry in yield and work hardening behavior of UFG CP Ti were investigated by uniaxial tension and compression tests. The experimental results reveal that UFG CP Ti exhibits a relatively obvious tensioncompression asymmetry in yielding and work hardening behavior. The basal and prismaticslip are suppressed either for tension or compression, which is the easiest to activate. The tension twin system{1012}<1011> easily activated in compression deformation due to the prismatic fiber texture based on the Schmidt factor, consequently resulting in a lower yield strength under compression than tension.ECAP can improve the tension-compression asymmetry of CP Ti due to grain refinement. The interaction among the dislocations, grain boundaries and deformation twins are the main work hardening mechanisms for compression deformation, while the interaction between the dislocations and grain boundaries for tension deformation.Deformation twins lead to the higher work hardening under compression than tension.

文摘The three-node feedforward motif has been revealed to function as a weak signal amplifier. We present an analytical description of the double resonance, which agrees with the numerical findings.
文摘Depression is a psychological disorder that affects the general public worldwide. It is particularly important to make an objective and accurate diagnosis of depression, and the measurement methods of brain activity have gradually received increasing attention.Resting electroencephalogram(EEG)alpha asymmetry in patients with depression shows changes in activation of the alpha frequency band of the left and right frontal cortices. In this paper,we review the findings of the relationship between frontal EEG alpha asymmetry in the resting state and depression.Based on worldwide studies,we found the following:(1)Compared with individuals without depression, those with depression showed greater right frontal EEG alpha asymmetry in the resting state. However, the pattern of frontal EEG alpha asymmetry in the resting state in depressive individuals seemed to disappear with age;(2)Compared with individuals without maternal depression, those with maternal depression showed greater right frontal EEG alpha asymmetry in the resting state, which indicated that genetic or experience-based influences have an impact on frontal EEG alpha asymmetry at rest;and(3)Frontal EEG alpha asymmetry in the resting state was stable, and little or no change occurred after antidepressant treatment. Finally,we concluded that the contrasting results may be due to differences in methodology, clinical characteristics, and participant characteristics.

文摘Fully differential cross-sections of single ionization of He and Ne atoms are studied by linearly polarized extreme ultraviolet(XUV)photons in the energy range of 22.1 e V–43.7 e V,using a reaction microscope.Photoelectron angular distributions and theβasymmetry parameters for He 1s^(2) electrons prove the reliability of our experiment, and the β asymmetry parameters extracted from the angular distributions of Ne 2p^(6) electrons are obtained.By comparing with different theoretical calculations,it is found that the contribution of the electron correlation effect in Ne 2p^(6) single ionization becomes increasingly important as the incident photon energy increases, while the relativistic effect is relatively low in the whole incident energy range. Our experimentalβasymmetry parameters may serve as a significant reference to test the most elaborated theories in the field. The datasets presented in this paper, including the photoelectron angular distributions andβasymmetry parameters, are openly available at https://doi.org/10.57760/sciencedb.j00113.00073.

文摘BACKGROUND Correcting severe skeletal class III malocclusion with facial asymmetry in adults through orthodontic treatment alone is difficult.CASE SUMMARY In this case report,we describe orthodontic treatment and lower incisor extraction without orthognathic surgery for a 27-year-old man with a transverse discrepancy. The extraction sites were closed using an elastic chain. The use of intermaxillary elastics, improved super-elastic Ti-Ni alloy wire, and unilateral multibend edgewise arch wire was crucial for correcting facial asymmetry and the midline deviation.CONCLUSION After treatment, the patient had a more symmetrical facial appearance, acceptable overjet and overbite, and midline coincidence. The treatment results remained stable 3 years after treatment. This case report demonstrates that a minimally invasive treatment can successfully correct severe skeletal class III malocclusion with facial asymmetry.
文摘Biomonitoring using fish has been a popular method of assessing the toxic effects of cadmium concentrations of cadmium in water bodies and has led to bioaccumulation in fish contributing to various morphological alterations. This study can add to the body of research regarding fluctuating asymmetry as a tool to study developmental toxicants and assess other bilateral organs.
文摘A universe consisting of protons, neutrons, and electrons with electrical neutrality is consistent with an equal number of c and preons, assuming the rishon preon theory of Shupe and Harari. A relationship between Higgs boson states and preons is proposed.

文摘The ductility and plastic asymmetry of an as-annealed magnesium alloy plate were studied in compression through combined process of torsion and subsequent annealing by optical microscope and EBSD. The enhanced ductility and reduced asymmetry are attributed to the development of a gradient microstructure with refined grains, and also randomization of the weakened texture due to torsion and subsequent annealing.

文摘Photodetachment of H- irradiated by linearly polarized few-cycle laser field is investigated by time-dependent SchrSdinger equation numerically. The Coulomb effect on the asymmetry of H- photodetachment mainly behaves in the CE phase shift of H- instead of the amplitude of asymmetry parameter curve.
