Numerical simulation of super-continuum laser propagation in turbulent atmosphere

Considering the atmospheric extinction and turbulence effects,we investigate the propagation performances of supercontinuum laser sources in atmospheric turbulence statistically by using the numerical simulation method,and the differences in propagation properties between the super-continuum(SC)laser and its pump laser are also analyzed.It is found that the propagation characteristics of super-continuum laser are almost similar to those of the pump laser.The degradation of source coherence degree may cause the relative beam spreading and scintillation indexes to decrease at different propagation distances or different turbulence strengths.The root-mean-square value of beam wandering is insensitive to the variation of source correlation length,and less aperture averaging occurs when the laser source becomes less coherent.Additionally,from the point of view of beam wandering,the SC laser has no advantage over the pump laser.Although the pump laser can bring about a bigger aperture average,the SC laser has a lower scintillation which may be due to the multiple wavelength homogenization effects on intensity fluctuations.This would be the most important virtue of the SC laser that can be utilized to improve the performance of laser engineering. 展开更多

Based on the modified Rytov theory and the international telecommunication union-radio (ITU-R) slant atmospheric structure constant model, the uniform scintillation index of partially coherent Gaussian-Schell model (GSM) beam propa- gation in the slant path is derived from weak- to strong-turbulence regions considering inner- and outer-scale effects. The effects of wavelength of beams and inner- and outer-scale of turbulence on scintillation are analyzed numerically. Compar- ison between the scintillation of GSM beams under the von Karman spectrum and that of beams under the modified Hill spectrum is made. The results obtained show that the scintillation index obtained under the von Karman spectrum is smaller than that under the modified Hill spectrum. This study can find theory bases for the experiments of the partially coherent GSM beam propagation through atmospheric turbulence. 展开更多

The scintillation index(SI) of a Gaussian–Schell model(GSM) beam in a moderate-to-strong anisotropic nonKolmogorov turbulent atmosphere is developed based on the extended Rytov theory. The on-axis SI in a marine atmosphere is higher than that in a terrestrial atmosphere, but the off-axis SI exhibits the opposite trend. The on-axis SI first increases and then begins to decrease and saturate as the turbulence strength increases. Turbulence inner and outer scales have different effects on the on-axis SI in different turbulent fluctuation regions. The anisotropy characteristic of atmospheric turbulence leads to the decline in the on-axis SI, and the rise in the off-axis SI. The on-axis SI can be lowered by increasing the anisotropy of turbulence, wavelength, and source partial coherence before entering the saturation attenuation region. The developed model may be useful for evaluating ship-to-ship/shore free-space optical communication system performance. 展开更多

Based on the extended Huygens-Fresnel principle, a two-frequency, two-point cross-spectral density function of partially coherent Gaussian-Schell model pulse (GSMP) beam propagation in slant atmospheric turbulence is derived. Using the Markov approximation method and on the assumption that (w1 - w2)/(w1 + w2) ≤ 1, the theory obtained is valid for turbulence of any strength and can be applied to narrow-band signals. The expressions for average beam intensity, the beam size, and the two-frequency complex degree of coherence of a GSMP beam are obtained. The numerical results are presented, and the effects of the frequency, initial pulse width, initial beam radius, zenith angle, and outer scales on the complex degree of coherence are discussed. This study provides a better understanding of the second-order statistics of a GSMP beam propagating through atmospheric turbulence in the space-frequency domain. 展开更多

We derive an analytical expression for the propagation factor(known as M2-factor) of electromagnetic concentric rings Schell-model(EM CRSM) beams in non-Kolmogorov turbulence by utilizing the extended Huygens–Fresnel diffraction integral formula and the second-order moments of the Wigner distribution function(WDF). Our results show that the EM CRSM beam has advantage over the scalar CRSM beam for reducing the turbulence-induced degradation under suitable conditions. The EM CRSM beam with multi-rings far-fields in free space is less affected by the turbulence than the one with dark-hollow far-fields or the electromagnetic Gaussian Schell-model(EGSM) beam. The dependence of the M2-factor on the beam parameters and the turbulence are investigated in detail. 展开更多

Broadband terahertz(THz) atmospheric transmission characteristics from 0 to 8 THz are theoretically simulated based on a standard Van Vleck–Weisskopf line shape, considering 1696 water absorption lines and 298 oxygen absorption lines.The influences of humidity, temperature, and pressure on the THz atmospheric absorption are analyzed and experimentally verified with a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer(FTIR) system, showing good consistency. The investigation and evaluation on high-frequency atmospheric windows are good supplements to existing data in the low-frequency range and lay the foundation for aircraft-based high-altitude applications of THz communication and radar. 展开更多

Time-mean global general circulation data are employed to analyze the temporal and spatial variations of the meridional gradient of zonal mean potential vorticity,the critical wavenumber n_s for horizontal wave- propagation,and the critical wavenumber K_c for vertical wave-propagation.Thereby the kinematic charac- teristics in the propagation of atmospheric stationary waves and their annual variations are studied.Results show that in the troposphere n_s and K_c usually decrease with the increase of either latitude or altitude. Synoptic and near-resonant Rossby waves could be trapped during their upward and meridional propagations. These characteristics possess prominent annual variations,especially in the Northern Hemisphere.It is found that the spatial and temporal variations of these kinematic characteristics are in good agreement with those of the atmospheric wave patterns. 展开更多
