From the viewpoint of energy-saving and environment protection,it is necessary to develop Ultra Super Critical(USC) fossil-fired power plants. In order to ensure the reliable operation of power plants under high steam conditions, good mechanical properties(particularly high creep strength),corrosion resistance and fabricability are generally required for the heat resistant steels used in USC boilers.Among these heat-resistant steels,S30432 austenitic heat-resistant steels are of interest due to high creep strength, excellent oxidation and corrosion resistance at temperatures up to 650 -700℃.In this paper, the strengthening mechanism of S30432 austenitic heat-resistant steel was investigated based on the precipitation behavior of S30432 during aging and creep at 650℃.Results show that the microstructure of as-supplied S30432 steel is austenite, the main precipitation consists of only Nb(C,N).After aged for 10 000 h or crept for 10 712 h,there is a slight increase in the size of fine Nb(C,N),but the transformation from Nb(C,N) to NbCrN does not occur.Aging and creep results in the precipitation ofε-Cu and M_(23)C_6.The coarsening velocity ofε-Cu particles diminishes greatly and they are still very fine in the long-term creep range. With the increase of aging and creep time M_(23)C_6 carbides tend to coarsen gradually. The size of M_(23)C_6 is larger and the coarsening is easier in contrast toε-Cu and Nb(C,N).Nb(C,N) precipitates in the as-supplied microstructure, while aging and creep result in the precipitation ofε-Cu and M_(23)C_6.High creep rupture strength of S30432 steel is attributed to the precipitation hardening ofε-Cu,Nb(C,N) and M_(23)C_6.Extremely,ε-Cu plays an important role in improving the creep rupture strength of S30432,and at least 61%of the creep rupture strength of S30432 at 650℃results from the precipitation hardening ofε-Cu particles. 展开更多

The dendrites, eutectic carbides,Laves phase and microsegregation of alloying element in electroslag remelted 15Cr-22Ni-1Nb austenitic heat-resistant steel with varying cerium contents were studied. The liquidus and solidus temperatures of the steel were determined to reveal the effect of cerium on solidification temperature interval and local solidification time of the steel. The secondary dendrite arm spacing decreases from 57.10 to 40.18μm with increasing the cerium content from 0 to 0.0630 wt.%.The eutectic NbC and Laves phase in as-cast ingots exhibit blocky and honeycomb morphology, respectively. The area fractions and sizes of eutectic NbC and Laves phase in as-cast ingots decrease with the increase in cerium content. The atomic percentage of Laves phase-forming element(Ni,Nb,Cr,Mo and Si)decreases with the increase in cerium content of the steel. The microsegregation of Mo,Ni,Si,Cr and Nb decreases with increasing the cerium content, which is favorable to reducing both the amount and sizes of eutectic NbC and Laves phase in as-cast ingots. The solidification temperature interval and local solidification time of the steel decrease as the cerium content is increased from 0 to 0.0630 wt.%,which inhibits the growth of dendrites, eutectic NbC and Laves phase. 展开更多

Three types of steels were designed on the basis of GX40CrNiSi25-12 austenitic heat resistant steel by adding different Mn contents(2wt.%,6wt.%,and 12wt.%).Thermodynamic calculation, microstructure characterization and mechanical property tests were conducted to investigate the effect of Mn addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the austenitic heat resistant steel. Results show that the matrix structure in all the three types of steels at room temperature is completely austenite.Carbides NbC and M_(23)C_(6)precipitate at grain boundaries of austenite matrix. With the increase of Mn content, the number of carbides increases and their distribution becomes more uniform. With the Mn content increases from 1.99%to 12.06%,the ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and elongation increase by 14.6%,8.0%and 46.3%,respectively.The improvement of the mechanical properties of austenitic steels can be explained by utilizing classic theories of alloy strengthening, including solid solution strengthening, precipitation strengthening, and grain refinement. The increase in alloy strength can be attributed to solid solution strengthening and precipitation strengthening caused by the addition of Mn.The improvement of the plasticity of austenitic steels can be explained from two aspects:grain refinement and homogenization of precipitated phases. 展开更多

In this study, the precipitation behavior of a new austenitic heat-resistant steel (Fe-20Cr-30Ni-2Nb, in at%) was investigated. The effects of alloying addition of boron (B) and lanthanum (La) on the microstructure of the austenitic steel were scrutinized using SEM, EPMA, TEM, and XRD. The results showed that the addition of B enhanced the precipitation of bar-type Laves phase. A small precipitate with high La concentration was observed at the grain boundary in the alloy without aging; similar precipitates without La also presented in region adjacent to the La single phase. This result indicates that La can exist independently and does not contribute to the formation of new compounds. However, in both B- and La-modified alloy, B appeared in the precipitate free zone. In the alloy containing both B and La, only Fe2Nb Laves- phase precipitates, as indicated by the XRD result. 展开更多

The microstructure, eutectic carbides and intermetallic compounds in as-cast ingots with varying Nb contents produced by electroslag remelting were studied. The solidification behavior, microsegregation of alloying elements and its influence on precipitates were analyzed. The increase in Nb content from 0.64 to 1.40 wt.%has no effect on the dendrite morphology and secondary dendrite arm spacing. The total area fraction of eutectic NbC and Laves phase in as-cast ingots increases with the increase in Nb content. The eutectic precipitates in the ingot with 0.64 wt.%Nb are mainly NbC,and the others are Fe_(2)Nb-type Laves phase.Increasing the Nb content of the steel significantly promotes the precipitation of Laves phases and lowers the precipitation temperature of NbC eutectic carbides.Eutectic carbide M_(2)C is precipitated only in the ingot with 1.4 wt.%Nb.The average concentration of Nb in both interdendritic and intragranular regions increases with the increase in Nb content of the steel, leading to a change in the morphology of Fe_(2)Nb-type Laves phase from honeycomb to blocky.Increasing the Nb content exerts little effect on the microsegregation degrees of Si,Mo,Cr and Ni in the steel. 展开更多

In this work, the growth kinetics of MX (M - metal, X - C/N) nanoprecipitates in type 347H austenitic steel was systematically studied. To investigate the coarsening behavior and the growth mechanism of MX carbonitrides during long-term aging, experiments were performed at 700, 800, 850, and 900℃ for different periods (1, 24, 70, and 100 h). The precipitation behavior of carbonitrides in specimens subjected to various aging conditions was explored using carbon replicas and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations. The corresponding sizes ofMX carbonitrides were measured. The results demonstrates that MX carbonitrides precipitate in type 347H austenitic steel as Nb(C,N). The coarsening rate constant is time-independent; however, an increase in aging temperature results in an increase in coarsening rate of Nb(C,N). The coarsening process was analyzed according to the calculated diffusion activation energy of Nb(C,N). When the aging temperature was 800-900℃, the mean activation energy was 294 kJ·mol -1, and the coarsening behavior was controlled primarily by the diffusion of Nb atoms. 展开更多

The austenitic heat resistant-steels have been considered as important candidate materials for advanced supercritical boilers, nuclear reactors, super heaters and chemical reactors, due to their favorable combination of high strength, corrosion resistance, perfect mechanical properties, workability and low cost.Since the precipitation behavior of the steels during long-term service at elevated temperature would lead to the deterioration of mechanical properties, it is essential to clarify the evolution of secondary phases in the microstructure of the steels. Here, a summary of recent progress in the precipitation behavior and the coarsening mechanism of various precipitates during aging in austenitic steels is made. Various secondary phases are formed under service conditions, like MX carbonitrides, M_(23)C_6 carbides, Z phase, sigma phase and Laves phase. It is found that the coarsening rate of M_(23)C_6 carbides is much higher than that of MX carbonitrides. In order to understand the thermal deformation mechanism, a constitutive equation can be established, and thus obtained processing maps are beneficial to optimizing thermal processing parameters, leading to improved thermal processing properties of steels. 展开更多

Microstructure and high-temperature dry sliding wear at 600 ~C in ambient air of austenitic heat-resistant steel ZG40Cr25Ni20 with different contents (mass percent) of AI (0 to 7.10~) have been investigated. The results show that microstructures of 4.68% and 7.10% A1 addition content consist of the matrix and reinforcement of inter- metallic compound y' and carbide, while microstructures of ZG40Cr25Ni20 without A1 and with A1 of 1.68% are ab- sent of y'. Higher wear resistance than the original ZG40Cr25Ni20 alloy is achieved in alloys with higher content of A1 under the same high-temperature wear test condition. The wear rates of Fe-25Cr-20Ni-7.10A1 and Fe-25Cr-20Ni- 4.68A1 are only 20.83% and 45.83% of that of Fe-25Cr-20Ni, respectively. Heat-resistant steels with higher con- tents of AI (4.72% and 7.10%) have higher hardness than those with lower contents of AI (1.68% and 0). Understandings of the effect of hot deformation parameters close to the practical production line on grain refinement are crucial for enhancing both the strength and toughness of future rail steels. In this work, the austenite dynamic recrystallization(DRX)behaviors of a eutectoid pearlite rail steel were studied using a thermo-mechanical simulator with hot deformation parameters frequently employed in rail production lines. The single-pass hot deformation results reveal that the prior austenite grain sizes(PAGSs)for samples with different deformation reductions decrease initially with an increase in deformation temperature. However, once the deformation temperature is beyond a certain threshold, the PAGSs start to increase. It can be attributed to the rise in DRX volume fraction and the increase of DRX grain with deformation temperature,respectively.Three-pass hot deformation results show that the accumulated strain generated in the first and second deformation passes can increase the extent of DRX.In the case of complete DRX,PAGS is predominantly determined by the deformation temperature of the final pass.It suggests a strategic approach during industrial production where part of the deformation reduction in low temperature range can be shifted to the medium temperature range to release rolling mill loads. 展开更多

The reliable welding of T91 heat-resistant steel to 316L stainless steel is a considerable issue for ensuring the safety in service of ultrasupercritical power generation unit and nuclear fusion reactor, but the high-quality dissimilar joint of these two steels was difficult to be obtained by traditional fusion welding methods. Here we improved the structure-property synergy in a dissimilar joint of T91 steel to 316L steel via friction stir welding.A defect-free joint with a large bonding interface was produced using a small-sized tool under a relatively high welding speed. The bonding interface was involved in a mixing zone with both mechanical mixing and metallurgical bonding. No obvious material softening was detected in the joint except a negligible hardness decline of only HV~10 in the heat-affected zone of the T91 steel side due to the formation of ferrite phase. The welded joint exhibited an excellent ultimate tensile strength as high as that of the 316L parent metal and a greatly enhanced yield strength on account of the dependable bonding and material renovation in the weld zone. This work recommends a promising technique for producing high-strength weldments of dissimilar nuclear steels. 展开更多

The hot deformation behaviours of 316LN-Mn austenitic stainless steel were investigated by uniaxial isothermal compression tests at different temperatures and strain rates. The microstructural evolutions were also studied using electron backscatter diffraction. The flow stress decreases with the increasing temperature and decreasing strain rate.A constitutive equation was established to characterize the relationship among the deformation parameters, and the deformation activation energy was calculated to be 497.92 k J/mol.Processing maps were constructed to describe the appropriate processing window, and the optimum processing parameters were determined at a temperature of 1107-1160℃ and a strain rate of 0.005-0.026 s^(-1).Experimental results showed that the main nucleation mechanism is discontinuous dynamic recrystallization(DDRX),followed by continuous dynamic recrystallization(CDRX).In addition, the formation of twin boundaries facilitated the nucleation of dynamic recrystallization. 展开更多

First, strip cast samples of high strength microalloyed steel with sub-rapid solidification characteristics were prepared by simulated strip casting technique.Next, the isothermal growth of austenite grain during the reheating treatment of strip casts was observed in situ through confocal laser scanning microscope(CLSM).The results indicated that the time exponent of grains growth suddenly rise when the isothermal temperature higher than 1000℃.And the activation energy for austenite grain growth were calculated to be 538.0 kJ/mol in the high temperature region(above 1000℃)and 693.2 kJ/mol in the low temperature region(below 1000℃),respectively.Then,the kinetics model of austenite isothermal growth was established, which can predict the austenite grain size during isothermal hold very well.Besides, high density of second phase particles with small size was found during the isothermal hold at the low temperature region, leading to the refinement of austenite grain. After isothermal hold at different temperature for 1800 s,the bainite transformation in microalloyed steel strip was also observed in situ during the continuous cooling process. And growth rates of bainite plates with different nucleation positions and different prior austenite grain size(PAGS)were calculated. It was indicated that the growth rate of the bainite plate is not only related to the nucleation position but also to the PAGS. 展开更多

Pitting corrosion and crevice corrosion behaviors of high nitrogen austenitic stainless steels (HNSS) were investigated by electrochemical and immersion testing methods in chloride solution, respectively. The chemical constitution and composition in the depth of passive films formed on HNSS were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS). HNSS has excellent pitting and crevice corrosion resistance compared to 316L stainless steel. With increasing the nitrogen content in steels, pitting potentials and critical pitting temperature (CPT) increase, and the maximum, average pit depths and average weight loss decrease. The CPT of HNSS is correlated with the alloying element content through the measure of alloying for resistance to corrosion (MARC). The MARC can be expressed as an equation of CPT=2.55MARC-29. XPS results show that HNSS exhibiting excellent corrosion resistance is attributed to the enrichment of nitrogen on the surface of passive films, which forms ammonium ions increasing the local pH value and facilitating repassivation, and the synergistic effects of molybdenum and nitrogen. 展开更多

Alloying by nitrogen gas... A simple and feasible method for the production of high nitrogen austenitic stainless steels involves nitrogen gas alloying and adding nitrided ferroalloys under normal atmospheric conditions. Alloying by nitrogen gas bubbling in Fe-Cr-Mn-Mo series alloys was carried out in MoSi2 resistance furnace and air induction furnace under normal atmospheric conditions. The results showed that nitrogen alloying could be accelerated by increasing nitrogen gas flow rate, prolonging residence time of bubbles, increasing gas/molten steel interfaces, and decreasing the sulphur and oxygen contents in molten steel. Nitrogen content of 0.69% in 18Crl8Mn was obtained using air induction furnace by bubbling of nitrogen gas from porous plug. In addition, the nickel-free, high nitrogen austenitic stainless steels with sound and compact macrostructure had been produced in the laboratory using vacuum induction furnace and electroslag remelting furnace under nitrogen atmosphere by the addition of nitrided alloy with the maximum nitrogen content of 0.81%. Pores were observed in the ingots obtained by melting and casting in vacuum induction furnace with the addition of nitrided ferroalloys and under nitrogen atmosphere. After electroslag remelting of the cast ingots, they were all sound and were free of pores. The yield of nitrogen increased with the decrease of melting rate in the ESR process. Due to electroslag remelting under nitrogen atmosphere and the consequential addition of aluminum as deoxidizer to the slag, the loss of manganese decreased obviously. There existed mainly irregular Al2O3 inclusions and MnS inclusions in ESR ingots, and the size of most of the inclusions was less than 5 um. After homogenization of the hot rolled plate at 1 150℃ × 1 h followed by water quenching, the microstructure consisted of homogeneous austenite. 展开更多

The hot compression behavior of AISI 321 ll00~C and the strain rates of 0.01-1 s-1 using a Baehr austenitic stainless steel was studied at the temperatures of 950- DIL-805 deformation dilatometer. The hot deformation equations and the relationship between hot deformation parameters were obtained. It is found that strain rate and deformation temperature significantly influence the flow stress behavior of the steel. The work hardening rate and the peak value of flow stress increase with the decrease of deformation temperature and the increase of strain rate. In addition, the activation energy of deformation (Q) is calculated as 433.343 kJ/mol. The microstructural evolution during deformation indicates that, at the temperature of 950~C and the strain rate of 0.01 s-1, small circle-like precipitates form along grain boundaries; but at the temperatures above 950~C, the dissolution of such precipitates occurs. Energy-dispersive X-ray analyses indicate that the precipitates are complex carbides of Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Ti. 展开更多

High-temperature mechanical properties of high-boron austenitic steels(HBASs) were studied at 850 °C using a dynamic thermal-mechanical simulation testing machine. In addition, the thermal fatigue properties of the alloys were investigated using the self-restraint Uddeholm thermal fatigue test, during which the alloy specimens were cycled between room temperature and 800°C. Stereomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to study the surface cracks and cross-sectional microstructure of the alloy specimens after the thermal fatigue tests. The effects of carbon content on the mechanical properties at room temperature and high-temperature as well as thermal fatigue properties of the HBASs were also studied. The experimental results show that increasing carbon content induces changes in the microstructure and mechanical properties of the HBASs. The boride phase within the HBAS matrix exhibits a round and smooth morphology, and they are distributed in a discrete manner. The hardness of the alloys increases from 239(0.19 wt.% C) to 302(0.29 wt.% C) and 312 HV(0.37 wt.% C); the tensile yield strength at 850 °C increases from 165.1 to 190.3 and 197.1 MPa; and the compressive yield strength increases from 166.1 to 167.9 and 184.4 MPa. The results of the thermal fatigue tests(performed for 300 cycles from room temperature to 800 °C) indicate that the degree of thermal fatigue of the HBAS with 0.29 wt.% C(rating of 2–3) is superior to those of the alloys with 0.19 wt.%(rating of 4–5) and 0.37 wt.%(rating of 3–4) carbon. The main cause of this difference is the ready precipitation of M23(C,B)6-type borocarbides in the alloys with high carbon content during thermal fatigue testing. The precipitation and aggregation of borocarbide particles at the grain boundaries result in the deterioration of the thermal fatigue properties of the alloys. 展开更多

By increasing the yield strengths of austenitic stainless steels for pressure vessels with strain hardening techniques, the elastic load bearing capacity of austenitic stainless steel pressure vessels can be significantly improved. Two kinds of strain hardening methods are often used for austenitic stainless steel pressure vessels:Avesta model for ambient temperature applications and Ardeform model for cryogenic temperature applications. Both methods are obtained from conventional design rules based on the linear elastic theory, and only consider the hardening effect from materials.Consequently this limits the applications of strain hardening techniques for austenitic stainless steel pressure vessels because of safety concerns. This paper investigates the effect of strain hardening on the load bearing capacity of austenitic stainless steel pressure vessels under large deformation, based on the elastic-plastic theory.Firstly,to understand the effect of strain hardening on material behavior, the plastic instability loads of a round tensile bar specimen are derived under two different loading paths and validated by experiments.Secondly,to investigate the effect of strain hardening on pressure vessels strength, the plastic instability pressure under strain hardening is derived and further validated by finite element simulations.Further, the safety margin of pressure vessels after strain hardening is analyzed by comparing the safety factor values calculated from bursting tests, finite element analyses, and standards. The researching results show that the load bearing capacity of pressure vessels at ambient temperature is independent of the loading history when the effects of both material strain hardening and structural deformation are considered.Finite element simulations and bursting tests results show that the minimum safety factor of austenitic stainless steel pressure vessels with 5% strain hardening is close to the recommended value for common pressure vessels specified in the European pressure vessel standard. The proposed study also shows that in the strain hardening design of austenitic stainless steel pressure vessels, the calculation for plastic instability pressure could use theoretical formula or finite element analyses based on geometrical dimensions and material property parameters before strain hardening, but a 5%strain should be employed as a design limit. The proposed research can be used for the strain hardening design of austenitic stainless steel pressure vessels safely. 展开更多
