Event-related potentials associated with Chinese and English color-word Stroop tasks in Chinese bilinguals

Objective:To investigate the neural electrophysiologieal activity underlying Chinese and Eng- lish Stroop tasks for Chinese English bilinguals.Methods:Event-related potentials(ERPs)were recorded in 14 Chinese bilinguals with a moderate command of English when they performed the Stroop task pre- sented in English words and Chinese characters,respectively.Results:In Chinese task version,it was found an increased positivity over bilateral front-polar regions on incongruent trials compared with congru- ent trials,followed by an increased negativity over fronto-central region and an increased positivity over occipital region.While in English task version,only the increased negativity was observed over fronto-cen- tral region,but with reduced amplitude and anterior distribution.Conclusion:This increased negativity was proposed as an index of the resolution processes of conflicting information in the incongruent situa- tion.The increased positivity over occipital region on Chinese incongruent trials may indicate visually rechecking effect for Chinese character.

Exploration of teaching English to Korean-Chinese bilinguals

Since Korean ethnics in China learn English on the basis of two languages and two cultures, there is dual transfer of Korean-Chinese when they learn English. They can make good use of two language systems and dual positive transfer, and make English-Korean and English-Chinese comparative analysis in the basic stages of English learning.

An ERP Study in English Relative Clause Processing by Chinese-English Bilinguals

The processing of relative clauses receives much concern from linguists. The finding that object relatives are easier to process than subiect relatives in Chinese challenges the notion that subject relative clauses are preferred universally. A large body of literature provides theories related to sentence processing mechanisms for native speakers but leaves one area relatively untouched： how bilinguals process sentences. This study is designed to examine the case where the individuals with a Chinese L1 language background process subject-extracted subject relative clauses （SS） and subject-extracted object relative clauses （SO） by using event- related potentials （ERPs） to probe into the real-time language processing and presents a direct manifestation of brain activity. The findings from this study support the subject relative clause preference due to the strong influence of English relative clause markedness and bilinguals＇ relative lower working memory capacity.

Neural Mechanism and Representation of English and Chinese Metaphors of Bilinguals with Different Second Language Proficiency: An ERP Study

Brain mechanism of metaphor processing has always been a focus in Neurolinguistics. This study approaches bilinguals＇ metaphor semantic representation mechanism with Chinese bilinguals with different levels of second language proficiency by means of ERP （Event-related Potentials） technology. The experiment results showed that： 1） Both hemispheres collaborate in metaphor processing with the left hemisphere serving a leading semantic recognition role. The left hemisphere is more sensitive to first language input, while the right hemisphere is more active to second language input. 2） Compared with Chinese learners of higher proficiency in L2, learners of lower proficiency tend to adopt more Chinese neural mechanism in processing English metaphors. 3） When learners process metaphors, the neural mechanism difference of learners of higher proficiency is smaller than that of those of lower proficiency. The higher the second language proficiency, the higher the degree of common representation of Chinese and English metaphor.

PRODUCTION AND PERCEPTION OF ENGLISH RHOTIC SOUNDS BY MANDARIN-ENGLISH BILINGUALS

This study investigates the acquisition of English/■/by Mandarin-English bilinguals from a developmental aspect.First,a detailed description of the acoustic and articulatory(ultrasound)characteristics of Mandarin/■/is provided to lay the foundation for the cross-linguistic comparison between English and Mandarin rhotic sounds.Second,it investigates if Mandarin-English bilinguals could successfully acquire English/■/sound.The results showed that Mandarin-English bilinguals could learn language-specific phonetic realizations for English/■/,establishing a new phonetic category for the similar L2 sound.In addition,as the language proficiency grows,Mandarin-English bilinguals became more native-like in production,but not in perception.It suggests a rather loose connection between production and perception in the speech acquisition for late bilinguals.

The Application of“Problem-Based Learning+Flipped Classroom”Teaching Model in Bilingual Education

This study focuses on the application of the“PBL(problem-based learning)+Flipped Classroom”teaching model in bilingual education,aiming to explore its potential to enhance the quality and effectiveness of bilingual teaching.PBL emphasizes learning through the resolution of real-world problems,while the Flipped Classroom advocates that students acquire basic knowledge through self-study before class,dedicating class time to in-depth discussions and practical activities.The integration of these two teaching models in bilingual education aims to stimulate students’interest in learning,improve their autonomous learning abilities,enhance critical thinking,and foster cross-cultural communication skills.Through literature review,case analysis,and empirical research,this study first examines the current applications and challenges of PBL and the Flipped Classroom in bilingual education.Subsequently,it elaborates on the specific implementation steps of the“PBL+Flipped Classroom”teaching model in bilingual education,including problem design,preview material provision,cooperative learning,classroom activities,and language support.A comparative experiment is then conducted to analyze the impact of this teaching model on students’learning motivation,academic performance,and cross-cultural communication skills.The results indicate that the“PBL+Flipped Classroom”teaching model significantly improves students’learning motivation and participation,enhances academic performance,and effectively boosts their cross-cultural communication skills.Furthermore,this model aids in cultivating students’autonomous learning abilities and critical thinking,providing an innovative and effective approach to bilingual education.This study offers new ideas and insights for the field of bilingual education,which is of great significance for promoting the innovation and development of bilingual teaching models.

Research on Localized English Education for Transnational Left-behind Children in the Context of English Global Localization: A Case Study of Wenzhou Overseas Chinese Hometown

With the increasing development of English globalization,the trend of combining English with local cultures has become more evident.This research focuses on five schools in the Wenzhou overseas Chinese hometown to investigate the current status of English education from the perspectives of teachers,students,and textbooks.The aim was to propose bilingual education strategies for the education of transnational left-behind children(TLC).By examining the situation of English education in this specific context,this study sought to address the unique challenges faced by TLC and provide effective educational approaches.Interviews,observations,and document analysis were employed to gather data by means of questionnaire research methods.The findings of this study settled on the improvement of bilingual education for TLC and insights into enhancing English education in multicultural settings.

On the Models of the Bilingual Education and Their Implementation Conditions

This paper carefully probes into the main models of the bilingual education in the world, deeply analyses the conditions and requirements on the implementation of the bilingual education in our schools, and clearly differentiates TEFL and TESL as well as bilingual education. The writer thinks that in China we teach English as a foreign language instead of a second language, that the bilingual education is the supreme level of the foreign language acquisition, and that the final goal of the bilingual education is to make learners simultaneously think and use Chinese and English in both ways as well as communicate with one another in two languages according to the situational context. Therefore, it is not easy to practice the bilingual education in a country like China, which is still poor in the English language context. Views and Practices on Bilingual Teaching

Reading Performance and Academic Achievement in Early Childhood Bilingual and Monolinguals

Relationship between reading performance and academic achievement is theoretically predictable. However, this relationship could be higher among early childhood bilingual (ECBL) students than monolingual peers. For evaluating this claim, two groups of randomly selected female second graders (150 Farsi speaking and 150 Farsi and Turkish speaking) were tested and compared on these characteristics. The measures used were Kormi-Nouri and associates’ tests of reading performance. Moreover, academic achievement was defined to be the average of scores obtained by students at their final school exams in Math, Science and Farsi. Analysis of regression was then performed to determine which construct served as the best predictor of academic achievement in both groups. Based on the results, ECBL girls were superior to their monolingual (ML) counterparts in all three areas. Findings also show that reading performance was a strong predictor of school achievement for both groups.

An Analysis of Modern Bilingualism Currently Existing in China

This paper introduces two kinds of conceptions of bilingualism existing in China. One is traditional bilingualism, and the other refers to using a foreign language-English as an instrument to teach specialist subjects, which is called modern bilingualism.
