It was on May 29, 1959, when the late Premier Zhou Enlai came to visit Dr. Yu’s laboratory during his inspection tour at the Tianjin University. This has been an unforgettable event in Prof. Yu’s mind. When shaking hands with Prof. Yu, Premier Zhou said: "I heard that you have made great advances in the rescarch of heavy water. I am eagerly waiting for further success in your work. For the honor of our country, we must have heavy water developed with our own hands, in defiance of someone who attempts to strangle us." Looking into the Premier’s eyes of encouragement,Prof. Yu was then determined to live up to the expectations of the motherland by making a good job of his research work.展开更多

This paper uses the Xu family genealogy, literature catalog, historical records to study the Xu family’s life and deeds. Xu Chunfu was born in the second year of the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty (1523) and passed away in the 24th year of the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty (1596). He served as an official in the Tai Hospital for about 20 years. His work Gu Jin Yi Tong Da Quan was written around the 43rd year of the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty (1556), with a lower limit of the fifth year of the Longqing reign of the Ming Dynasty (1571), and the initial engraving time was not earlier than the eighth year of the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty (1580). This paper corrects the shortcomings and errors in previous research, and provides a comprehensive and systematic examination of Xu Chunfu’s life and works.展开更多

The details of economic and administrative aspects mentioned in the biography have provided some evidence which may suggest a decisive break for the ruling power from the relatively shifting control during the very early stage of dynastic period to the absolute central governance of both manpower and materials in the Old Kingdom that can also be signified, for instance, by the pyramid building in the 4th Dynasty. This document may therefore mirror the constitution of ancient Egyptian civilization during this transitional time.展开更多

Significant differences were found for all cone, needle and seed traits among populations and trees within populations. The coefficients of variation in 2 higher latitude populations were higher than those in other populations in all traits except for needle width and seed width. Fairly high within-population variability was also detected for cone dry weight, seed dry weight and needle traits in this study. Cone length, cone width, cone dry weight, seed scale length, seed scale width and seed wing length were strongly positively intercorrelated. Seed length and seed dry weight showed a significantly positive correlation with seed wing length. And needle width showed a significant negative correlation with cone traits, seed scale length, seed wing length and seed length. The higher the annual mean temperature, the higher the average cone length. This study also revealed a negative linear dependence on latitude: the higher the latitude, the lower the population average seed length. Seed dry weight was positively and linearly related with altitude.展开更多
