Biographies of Guest Editors

Guest Editor: Yonghui Deng, Department of Chemistry, Fudan University He received his B.S. in chemistry from Nanchang University (2000) and PhD in polymer chemistry and physics from Fudan University (2005). He worked as a postdoctoral researcher with Prof. Dongyuan Zhao (2005.10-2007.09), and was promoted as associate professor (2007.09) and full professor (2011) in Department of Chemistry at Fudan University. He worked as a visiting scholar with Prof. Peidong Yang in University of California at Berkeley (2009-2010).

Brief Biographies of Members of Editorial Policy Board

John Hilton-First Secretary (Cultural) and British Council English Language Officer in China since January 1995. MA (Cantab) PG Dip(Leeds) MSc Applied Linguistics (Edinburgh). Has been involved in ELT in the developing world continuously since 1967 and has worked in Cyprus, Nigeria, Sri Lanka,Spain, and much of francophone Africa. He has been a teacher, teacher-trainer, project designer and project manager.His overall interests are in communication(and English in particular) as an essential element of development, and the role and function of professional networks in the improvement of the English teaching precession.

Rediscovering Don Swanson:The Past,Present and Future of Literature-based Discovery

Purpose： The late Don R. Swanson was well appreciated during his lifetime as Dean of the Graduate Library School at University of Chicago, as winner of the American Society for Information Science Award of Merit for 2000, and as author of many seminal articles. In this informal essay, I will give my personal perspective on Don＇s contributions to science, and outline some current and future directions in literature-based discovery that are rooted in concepts that he developed.Design/methodology/approach： Personal recollections and literature review. Findings： The Swanson A-B-C model of literature-based discovery has been successfully used by laboratory investigators analyzing their findings and hypotheses. It continues to be a fertile area of research in a wide range of application areas including text mining, drug repurposing, studies of scientific innovation, knowledge discovery in databases, and bioinformatics. Recently, additional modes of discovery that do not follow the A-B-C model have also been proposed and explored （e.g. so-called storytelling, gaps, analogies, link prediction, negative consensus, outliers, and revival of neglected or discarded research questions）. Research limitations： This paper reflects the opinions of the author and is not a comprehensive nor technically based review of literature-based discovery. Practical implications： The general scientific public is still not aware of the availability of tools for literature-based discovery. Our Arrowsmith project site maintains a suite of discovery tools that are free and open to the public （http：//arrowsmith.psych.uic.edu）, as does BITOLA which is maintained by Dmitar Hristovski （http：// http：//ibmi.mf.uni-lj.si/bitola）, and Epiphanet which is maintained by Trevor Cohen （http：//epiphanet.uth.tme.edu/）. Bringing user-friendly tools to the public should be a high priority, since even more than advancing basic research in informatics, it is vital that we ensure that scientists actually use discovery tools and that these are actually able to help them make experimental discoveries in the lab and in the clinic. Originality/value： This paper discusses problems and issues which were inherent in Don＇s thoughts during his life, including those which have not yet been fully taken up and studied systematically.

Poul Erik Andersen's radiological work on osteochondrodysplasias and interventional radiology

Poul Erik Andersen is a Professor and Interventional Radiologist at the University of Southern Denmark,Odense and Odense University Hospital,Denmark.His innovative and expertise is primarily in vascular interventions where he has introduced and developed many procedures at Odense University Hospital.His significant experience and extensive scientific work has led to many posts in the Danish Society of Interventional Radiology,the European Society of Radiology and the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe,where he is a fellow and has passed the European Board of Interventional Radiology-The European qualification in Interventional Radiology.

Religious and Identity Trajectories Among the Ebrie of Anono and Blockhaus(Ivory Coast)

In the villages of Anono and Blockhaus,inserted in the district of Abidjan,three religious communities,notably Harrist,Catholic,and Methodist are socially accepted and recognized in the village space.These churches are adopted because they allow religious,cultural,and Christianized practices to coexist within their religious spaces.Social rules and sanctions operate there as a control mechanism for their sustainability.However,several faithful of these local churches are swarming for the benefit of the so-called“Evangelical”churches.This break is regarded by the collective memory as an act of deviance which involves stigma.We try to explore in what follows,20 biographical journeys of the faithful who abandon locally recognized churches.It is from the life story,the main data collection tool that we will first demonstrate the social situations of their affiliation to these churches(past experiences).Secondly,we will describe the social conditions of their disaffiliation(lived experiences)and thirdly,we will identify identity reconstruction strategies(experiences to be lived).They constitute an adaptive response to the process of social stigmatization maintained by the local chiefdom and large families.

“The Impression of Reality”： Fiction and Testimony in Dostoevsky＇s Notes

Truth of fiction might sound like a paradox, at least within the Platonic doxa. But perhaps there is no truth without fiction; Plato＇s own myths would testify to this necessary combination of ＂history＂ and ＂story＂ （histoire, storia, Geschichte, etc.）. Still, it might be not enough simply to affirm the necessity of fictional narrative for an historical account. In some cases, it would be difficult to accept a fictional aspect of historical testimony. Jorge Semprdn claims, on the other hand, that only fiction is able to communicate a traumatic, ＂unbearable＂ experience such as the one of prison camps. He refers to the work of Fyodor Dostoevsky as his model. My paper analyzes this testimonial aspect of Dostoevsky＇s Notes, especially the Notes from a Dead House. It shows, the particularity of this work, which combines an intense personal experience with a fictional elaboration, a quasi-novelistic setting, plot, and characters. I claim that in a sense such a combination might be considered as a model for literature in general, for its testimonial value, for its truth.

Biography as the Redemptive Text in Samuel Johnson＇s Lives of the English Poets

This paper attempts to look into some of Samuel Johnson＇s Lives of the English Poets （1925） and find out the common feature these biographical texts share. The close reading and detailed analysis demonstrate that Samuel Johnson manages to redeem and restore the biographical subjects＇ （the poets＇） life, honor, and status in their different but similar biographies; that is, each biography is a redemptive text in its own way. In specific, the credible life story is re-presented with selected biographical materials, the poets＇ lives together with their achievements are reevaluated under Johnson＇s corrective observation, and Johnson＇s empathy with the poets reestablishes the reader＇s understanding of the poets＇ literary careers.

From the History of Georgian-German Cultural and Political Relationship： Prince Erekle in Berlin

Georgian kings and princes were trying to establish ties and to develop relationships with European monarchies. In times of cultural, religious, demographic crisis, the Catholic missions sent by the Pope, and Russian ambassadors hold out hope to the Bagrations. In such circumstances, Georgians became closer to Europeans. The Capuchins, the Theatines, Jesuit monks were honored guests and members of the royal retinue in the Georgian Kingdoms-Princedoms. Thanks to them, in XVII-XVIII centuries, were brought up such Georgians thinkers as： Vakhushti Batonishvili, Beri Egnatashvili, Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani, Vakhtang VI, Teimuraz II, daughter of Vaghtang VI, Tamar （mother of King Erekle II）, etc. In addition, at the royal courts of Russia and Persia, it became fashionable to send their Princes to Europe, in order to get an education. The best example of this is Peter the Great and Nader Shah＇s son--known as Baron Semlin. From XVIII century, in the history of Georgian-German relations, there are authentic sources about Georgians＇ stay in Germany. Among the sources, if taking them chronologically, the oldest is about military education of Prince Erekle. The following sources are about visits of other Georgian Princes to Germany. The next sources tell about the military campaign of Georgian Hussars regiment, in whose ranks poet Davit Guramishvili was fighting. Among the above-mentioned sources, in the Georgian historiography, the issue of Davit Guramishvili has been well researched, but the same cannot be said of King Erekle II.

Turning into a “Godparent”: How adult volunteers negotiate their personal life to become a mentor for “Unaccompanied Refugee Minors”

This article looks into how volunteers deal with their biographies and social embeddedness to make sense of their engagement in mentoring before they are matched. It draws on a qualitative investigation on a community-based pilot youth mentoring program for “unaccompanied refugee minors” in Austria. This article reveals how already trained, local adults actively relate to “family,”“migration” and “previous activities” in their meaning-making. It shows how they negotiate their personal life and existing relationships in the process of turning into a future “godparent.” The discussion of findings against the state of the art leads the way to two heuristic claims: firstly, the study provides grounded arguments for an extension of the conventional mentoring concept on the side of the mentor. Secondly, for a more relational and processual approach towards the mentors’ side, both biographical and social network dimensions need to be integrated in methods and designs of youth mentoring research.

Building Experiential Teaching Content through the Perspective of Regression Standard of Living-Character Language in Depth Reading Strategy of Character Language in Biography

Historical literature has both the nature of history and literature.The content is vast,the thoughts are rich.Plus,it has many values such as literature,history and philosophy.They also have accumulated a profound national culture.Various language teaching materials in the basic education stage are often carefully selected from the classic biography and the quality is fruitful.Learning these works while understanding history can enhance students’“construction and application of language”,“development and promotion of thinking”,“appreciation and creation of aesthetics”and“understanding and inheritance of culture”as core literacy has important meaning.However,there are misunderstandings in the teaching content of current historical works such as the teaching of historical essays,the narration of narrative analysis,the interpretation of historical reading,the lack of literary aesthetics,the analysis of facial analysis,the labelling and other errors directly lead to a boring and less interesting classroom teaching of historical works.Therefore,classroom teaching is difficult for students to produce affinity in Chinese history literature[1].The classroom teaching of historical literature urgently needs to return to the regression standard of living in order to restore the historical life situation and construct experiential teaching content.Thus,only in this way can it be possible to build a foundation for understanding and let students walk into historical works.This article takes an excerpt from the“Records of the Grand Historian?Xiang Yu Exposition”in the“The Feast at Hong Gate”which stated,“he calls for me,a brotherhood was form”as an example,how to appreciate the character language by restoring the historical life situation with a life perspective.

Adeline Virginia Woolf,an English novelist and essayist,is regarded as one of the pioneer of stream-of-consciousness novel.In fact,her innovative spirit is reflected not only in the stream of consciousness novels,but also in her writing of new biography.Roger Fry,as Woolf’s only serious biography,contains the documentary features of biography and also expresses her experiment in biography writing.She manages to give full play to the writer’s subjectivity and uses her unusual narrative strategies so as to complete her poetic expression and endow the biography more literariness.

A Brief Biography of Prof.Yun-chang Wang(1906-)

Yun-chang Wang,a Chinese mycologist and pathologist,was born in Neihuang county of Henan province.After his graduation from Agricultural College of Peiping University,he became an assis- tant researcher in Botany Institute of Peiping Insti- tute.In 1936,he started his study in Belgium and two years later was granted a doctorate by 1' Universitéde Louvain.Since 1939,he has succes- sively taught in Zhejiang University,Sichuan Uni- versity,Northwest Agricultural College。

BIOGRAPHY of Professor YVES GLOCK,MD,PhD.

Professor Yves GLOCK was born on September 5,1950 in Moyeuvre Grande,in the east of France. On July 1968 he finished in Toulouse school-leaving examination leading to university entrance qualification. From 1969 to 1973 he followed the courses of the University of Medicine in Paul Sabatier University of Toulouse(Gold medals,1971,1972).

David Lodge is a well-known British contemporary writer and literary critic.He is the author of two biographical fictions,namely,Author,Author and A Man of Parts.Biographical fiction or biofiction/bionovel is an increasingly popular subgenre of the contemporary novel.After the Postmodernist Biofictions Conference which was held on 25March,2017 at Reading University,UK,Lodge could not give the author a face-to-face interview because of his old age and his gradual loss of hearing.He promised that he could be interviewed via email.Later,he answered the questions of the author and emailed them to the author.Lodge explained the origins of biofiction,defined biography and biofiction and distinguished biofiction from postmodernist biofiction.He holds that the formal differences would be the same as that between any traditional novel and any postmodernist novel;postmodernist biofiction and postmodernist novel both contain elements of parody,metafictional frame-breaking,etc.;biofiction does not pretend to replace biography;there is an ethical dimension to writing a bionovel,and a bionovelist has a responsibility to be fair to his/her subject,but also to be truthful;it has become popular in English writing in the last thirty years or so and it reflects a general tendency in modern culture and society towards fact-based narrative in drama and film as well as literature in the West.In addition,Lodge expounded the basic theories correlated with this.
