Poor fruit and vegetable consumption is one of the 10 major risk factors for mortality. There is a misconception regarding the consumption of dates among patients with diabetes. This manuscript assessed the effects of date consumption on fasting and postprandial blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin, total cholesterol,triglycerides,low-density lipoproteins,high-density lipoproteins, and microbial markers.Four literature databases were searched for relevant articles.Of the 595 studies retrieved,24 assessed the effects of dates on glycemic control and lipids.Overall, the evidence suggests that dates have a lowering effect on blood glucose.Dates reduce total cholesterol and triglyceride levels and increase high-density lipoprotein levels.Dates also promote the abundance of beneficial gut microbiota. Therefore, patients with diabetes and dyslipidemia can consume dates to reduce their blood glucose, cholesterol, and triglycerides. 展开更多

Background: The etiology of ovarian cancer is not well-understood;numerous metabolomics profiling, epidemiological, and hospital-based case control studies have associated abnormal levels of blood glucose and serum lipids with the risk and the prognosis of various types of cancers including ovarian cancer. The association between the risk of the incidence of ovarian cancer and the alterations in the levels of blood glucose and serum lipids is not well defined. Objective: In this study we aimed to compare the levels of blood glucose, triacylglycerols, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in patients with different stages of ovarian cancer and healthy controls to determine how they relate to the risk and prognosis of ovarian cancer. Methodology: In a case-control cross sectional study, we enrolled ninety-nine Sudanese women, diagnosed with ovarian cancer but had not received any kind of treatment as the study group, and a control group of forty-one age-matched, apparently healthy women. The patients were classified according to the International Federation of Obstetricians and Gynecologists staging system into two groups: early stages (stage I & II) and late stages (stages III & IV). Blood glucose and serum lipids;triacylglycerols, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were determined by enzymatic colorimetric methods using commercially available analytical kits. The IBM SPSS version 20 software was used for statistical analysis. A Mann-Whitney U test was used for comparison of the median concentrations of blood glucose, triacylglycerols, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in the study groups. Logistic regression model was used to estimate the relative risk of ovarian cancer in relation to levels of blood glucose and serum lipids. P value of 0.05 was considered significant. Results: Our data indicated significantly higher levels of blood glucose (p < 0.001), triacylglycerols (p = 0.002), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (p < 0.001), and lower levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (p = 0.023), in ovarian cancer patients compared to the control subjects. No significant difference was found in the levels of blood glucose or any of the serum lipids between patients in the early stages (stage I & II) and those in late stages (stage III & IV) of ovarian cancer. The logistic regression analysis indicated significant association between the elevated levels of the blood glucose, triacylglycerols and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and the risk of the ovarian cancer. Conclusion: We conclude that the levels of blood glucose, triacylglycerols, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol differ significantly between ovarian cancer patients and the healthy control subjects. The risk of ovarian cancer was positively associated with the levels of blood glucose, triacylglycerols and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and negatively associated with levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Therefore, determination of blood glucose and serum lipids, particularly, triacylglycerols, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol may be helpful as diagnostic indicators of ovarian cancer (OC). 展开更多

Aim To study the effects of binuclear copper (Ⅱ) threonine complex (Cu2 (Thr)4) as analogue of superoxide dismutase (SOD) on blood glucose, blood lipids and vessels of hearts and kidneys in diabetic mice. Methods Diabetic mouse model was established by intraperitioneal injection of alloxan. Low, middle, and high doses of Cu2(Thr)4 at 0.002%, 0.02% and 0.1% were given respectively to diabetic mice following lavage. The fasting blood glucose was determined after the diabetic mice were given Cu2 (Thr)4 for 0, 30, and 45 d. The diabetic mice were killed on the 45th day. Then glycosylated hemoglobin (HbAlc) and blood lipids were assayed, and pathologic changes in hearts and kidneys stained with HE were observed. Results Compared with the control group in which the diabetic mice were given distilled water, the value of blood glucose reduced significantly in middle dose group (P 〈 0.01 ), followed by that in low dose group (P 〈 0.05). TC level reduced markedly and HDL level increased significantly in all three treatment groups (P 〈 0.05). Especially in middle dose group, cardiac muscle fibers were neatly arranged, nucleus and cytoplasm well distributed, glomeruli showing normal structure, cells well distributed and staining being normal. Conclusion Cu2 (Thr)4 reduces blood glucose, regulates blood lipids, and play protective action on the vessels of hearts and kidneys in diabetic mice. The effects of it in middle dose were better than those of other doses. 展开更多

This study was done to assess whether self monitoring of blood glucose is associated with better glycaemic control in type 2 diabetic Trinidadians. Data was collected from 146 type 2 diabetics via interviews and medical files. Variables extracted included fasting blood glucose, HbA1c and lipid profile. Recent users of the glucometer had better glycemic control compared with longstanding users (HbA1c: 8.4% ± 0.28% vs 9.4% ± 0.62%). Diabetics using a glucometer for >11 years had the highest cholesterol (234 ± 27mg/dL) while those using it 6 months to 5 yrs had the lowest values (206 ± 8 mg/dL). Using the glucometer occasionally or once a week had little impact on these indices. Usage of insulin preparation was positively correlated with HbA1c (r = 0.295;p = 0.001) while those relying on oral hypoglycaemic agents showed a negative correlation (r = -0.265). Further, those who took their medication as prescribed had a lower HbA1c than those who took their medication occasionally. Ironically, HbA1c fell with increasing duration between clinic visits with those visiting annually having the lowest HbA1c (9.0% ± 0.2% vs 7.1% ± 0.7%). Compliance with lifestyle and exercise resulted in lower HbA1c and blood lipids. Poor client education on glucometer usage, administration of insulin and non-compliance with diet and exercise were associated with higher HbA1c. 展开更多

Background and Aims: Hyperlipidemia is one of clear risk factors of diabetes. Regarding its importance, this study was designed to compare the effects of olive oil and grape seed oil on serum lipids and blood pressure in patients with hyperlipidemia in 2015. Methods and Results: In this clinical trial, 60 patients with hyperlipidemia who met inclusion criteria were recruited. Subjects were randomly assigned 3 groups: 1) consume 20 ml/day refined olive oil;2) consume 20 ml/day grape seed oil;3) the control group received no oil. The study period was six weeks. All participants were under Step I diet. Height and weight measurements were taken by Seca scale. Blood pressure, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, triglyceride and fasting blood sugar were measured at baseline and after 6 weeks by standard methods. Low-density lipoprotein levels were calculated by the Friedewald’s formula. Data were analyzed with ANOVA test in SPSS software version 16.0. Sixty participants (36 female and 24 male) with the average age of 47.5 ± 9 y and the mean body mass index of 31.78 ± 5.41 kg/m2 had completed the study. Olive oil intervention decreased systolic blood pressure significantly compared to grape seed oil group (P = 0.01). Triglyceride was significantly decreased in olive oil and also triglyceride groups (P = 0.02 and 0.004, respectively). Conclusion: Overall, the effects of olive oil and grape seed oil were better than control group. However, we suggest the substitution of dietary lipids with olive oil because of its more beneficial effects. Registration number for clinical trial: IRCT2014070218329N1 registration code in Iran Clinical Trial site. 展开更多

AIM: To compare freeze-dried strawberry(FDS) beverage and strawberry-flavored drink effects on lipid profile and blood pressure in type 2 diabetic(T2D) patients.METHODS: In a randomized, double-blind, controlled trial, 36 subjects with T2D(23 females; mean ± SE age: 51.57 ± 10 years) were randomly divided into two groups. Participants consumed two cups of either pure FDS beverage(each cup containing 25 g freeze-dried strawberry powder equivalent to one serving of fresh strawberries; intervention group) or an iso-caloric drinkwith strawberry flavoring(similar to the FDS drink in fiber content and color; placebo group) daily for 6 wk. Anthropometric measurements, 3 d, 24 h dietary recall, and fasting blood samples were collected at baseline and at weeks 6 intervention. After lying down and relaxing for approximately 10 min, each participant's blood pressure was recorded in triplicate with 5 min intervals; recordings were made at baseline and the trial end-point. Each participant's lipid profile was assessed before and after intervention.RESULTS: Assessment at the weeks 6 intervention showed a significant reduction from baseline in total cholesterol levels and total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C) ratio in the intervention group(179.01 ± 31.86 to 165.9 ± 32.4 mg/L; P = 0.00 and 3.9 ± 0.88 to 3.6 ± 0.082 mg/L; P = 0.00 respectively), but the change was not significantly different between the two groups(P = 0.07, P = 0.29 respectively). Systolic blood pressure levels were significantly reduced from baseline in both the FDS and placebo drink groups(129.95 ± 14.9 to 114.3 ± 27.5 mm Hg; P = 0.02 and 127.6 ± 15.6 to 122.9 ± 14.47 mm Hg; P = 0.00 respectively), but the reduction was not significantly different between the two groups. Diastolic blood pressure was significantly reduced post-intervention in the FDS drink group compared to placebo group(78.7 ± 7.2 vs 84.4 ± 5.8; P = 0.01), the reduction was also significant within the FDS drink group(84.2 ± 8.03 to 78.7 ± 7.2; P = 0.00). Triglycerides, HDL-C concentrations and anthropometric indices showed no significant differences between or within groups. CONCLUSION: Short-term FDS supplementation improved selected cardiovascular risk factors in subjects with T2 D. Long-term effects on other metabolic biomarkers need to be investigated in future trials. 展开更多

Venous and finger-pricked blood samples were obtained from all participants and used for blood glucose levels measurement following the standard procedures. <strong>Results:</strong> The mean blood glucose levels for one-hundred diabetic patients using the Gluco Contour TS and Gluco SD Codefree were not significantly different compared with the Cobas Integra 400 Plus (12.14 ± 6.89 mmol/L vs. 12.85 ± 8.83 mmol/L, <span style="white-space:normal;"><i></span>P<span style="white-space:normal;"></i></span> = 0.159;12.50 ± 7.18 mmol/L vs. 12.85 ± 8.83 mmol/L, <i>P</i> = 0.490), respectively. However, there is a significant difference using the Gluco Alert device from that of the Cobas Integra 400 Plus (11.83 ± 6.94 mmol/L vs. 12.85 ± 8.83 mmol/L, <span style="white-space:normal;"><i></span>P<span style="white-space:normal;"></i></span> = 0.046). Furthermore, using the ROC curve at a 95% confidence interval, the Cobas Integra 400 Plus showed a significant agreement with the Gluco Contour TS (51.4%), Gluco SD Codefree (50.4%), and Gluco Alert (39.3%), respectively. For determining accuracy, the sensitivity of the glucometer devices was the following: Gluco SD Codefree (87.3%), Contour TS (85.9%), and Gluco Alert (78.9%). In this regard, the highest specificity was related to Gluco Contour TS (65.5%). <strong>Conclusion:</strong> The correlation between both methods was good, with high sensitivity and specificity in measuring blood glucose levels as indicated by the ROC curve. Thus, we suggest using these glucometers at homes and hospitals as a point of care for diabetic patients. 展开更多

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of activating blood drugs (AB drugs) on blood glucose and lipid levels of diabetic patients METHODS: Systematic searches were conducted on 6 electronic databases and the search time was cut off in May 2016. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included if they investigated diabetic patients who received Western medicine combined withAB drugs in the experimental groups and solitary usage of corresponding Western medicine or placebo in the control groups. 6 outcome measures, which were considered as inclusion, were changes in fasting blood glucose (FBG), glycosylated haemoglobin A1 c (HbA 1 c), total triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c). The literature quality was assessed by Cochrane score for risk of bias in Review Manager 5.2, as well as meta-analysis was performed. RESULTS: 7 RCTs comprising 999 patients met all inclusion criteria. Meta-analysis showed beneficial effects of Western medicine combined with AB drugs on modulating FBG, TC, LDL-c and HDL-c compared with Western medicine or placebo (P〈0.05), while no difference was observed in HbAlc, and TG (P〉0.05). To some extent, the therapeutic effects of Western medicine combined with AB drugs were better than that of solitary usage of Western medicine or placebo. Besides, AB drugs were safe and reliable with little toxic and side-effects. CONCLUSIONS: The meta-analysis suggests beneficial effects of Western medicine combined with AB drugs on modulating blood glucose and lipids in diabetic patients. 展开更多

Screening the general population has debatable advantages. This study aims to determine whether spouses of patients with diabetes mellitus have higher random blood glucose (RBG) levels as well as the benefit of RBG testing as a targetted screening tool. Methodology: The survey employed a cross-sectional comparative study of spouses’ of diabetics and non-diabetics attending the general out-patient department of the LagosStateUniversityTeaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja. A modified WHO STEPS Surveillance Instrument and a one-touch Glucometer were used to collect data. Blood pressures and BMI were measured and correlated to blood glucose levels. Results: Prevalence of high RBG was found to be 7% among spouses of diabetics and 3.3% among spouses of non-diabetic patients. Mean RBG was 5.57 mmol/L and 7.7 mmol/L within the age group 40 - 49 years and 50 - 59 years respectively among spouses of diabetic patients compared to 5.4 mmol/L and 5.5 mmol/L within the same age group among the spouses non-diabetics. Spouses of patients with diabetes mellitus had higher systolic and diastolic blood pressures and BMI compared to spouses of non-diabetics. Conclusion: Being male, married to a diabetic patient, lower educational levels and higher body mass index are significantly associated with higher random blood glucose in the spouses of diabetic patients. Random blood glucose measurements are an effective screening tool and spouses of diabetic patients can benefit from targeted screening in controlled clinical settings. 展开更多

The leaf of Psidium guava is traditionally used in Asia to manage, control and treat diabetes. We designed this study to elucidate the effect of the administration of oral doses of aqueous and ethanol extract from Psidium guava leaves on plasma glucose, lipid profiles and the sensitivity of the vascular mesenteric bed to Phenylephrine in diabetic and non diabetic rats. Animals were divided into 5 groups (n = 10): two groups served as non-diabetic controls (NDC), while the other groups had diabetes induced with a single injection of streptozotocin (STZ). Psidium guava-treated chronic diabetic (PSG-CD) and Psidium guava-treated controls (PSG-C) received 1g/l of Psidium guavaadded to the drinking water for 8 weeks. The mesenteric vascular beds were prepared using the McGregor method. Administration of Psidium guava caused Ca/Mg ratio, plasma glucose, high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), total cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations to return to normal levels, and was shown to decrease alteration in vascular reactivity to vasoconstrictor agents. Our results support the hypothesis that Psidium guava could play a role in the management of diabetes and the prevention of vascular complications in STZ-induced diabetic rats. 展开更多

Objective:To investigate the effect of liraglutide combined with basal insulin on blood glucose control, lipid metabolism and oxidative stress in patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus complicated by obesity. Methods: A total of 58 patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus complicated by obesity who were diagnosed and treated in Xi'an No. 4 Hospital between February 2017 and August 2017 were divided into the control group (n=29) who received basal insulin therapy and the liraglutide group (n=29) who received liraglutide combined with basal insulin therapy according to random number table. The differences in the levels of glycolipid metabolism indexes and the contents of oxidative stress indexes were compared between the two groups before and after treatment. Results: Before treatment, the differences in the levels of glycolipid metabolism indexes in peripheral blood and the contents of oxidative stress indexes in serum were not statistically significant between the two groups. After 1 month of treatment, glucose metabolism indexes FBG and HOMA-IR levels in peripheral blood of liraglutide group were lower than those of control group;lipid metabolism indexes TC, TG, ApoB levels in peripheral blood were lower than those of control group, ApoA1 level was higher than those of control group;serum oxidation indexes MDA and LHP contents were lower than those of control group whereas anti-oxidation indexes GSH-Px and T-AOC contents were higher than those of control group. Conclusion: Liraglutide combined with basal insulin therapy can further control the glucolipid metabolism levels and inhibit the systemic oxidative stress response in patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus complicated by obesity. 展开更多

AIM: To determine gastric emptying, blood pressure, mesenteric artery blood flow, and blood glucose responses to oral glucose in Parkinson&#x02019;s disease.METHODS: Twenty-one subjects (13 M, 8 F; age 64.2 &#x000b1; 1.6 years) with mild to moderate Parkinson&#x02019;s disease (Hoehn and Yahr score 1.4 &#x000b1; 0.1, duration of known disease 6.3 &#x000b1; 0.9 years) consumed a 75 g glucose drink, labelled with 20 MBq 99mTc-calcium phytate. Gastric emptying was quantified with scintigraphy, blood pressure and heart rate with an automated device, superior mesenteric artery blood flow by Doppler ultrasonography and blood glucose by glucometer for 180 min. Autonomic nerve function was evaluated with cardiovascular reflex tests and upper gastrointestinal symptoms by questionnaire.RESULTS: The mean gastric half-emptying time was 106 &#x000b1; 9.1 min, gastric emptying was abnormally delayed in 3 subjects (14%). Systolic and diastolic blood pressure fell (P &#x0003c; 0.001) and mesenteric blood flow and blood glucose (P &#x0003c; 0.001 for both) increased, following the drink. Three subjects (14%) had definite autonomic neuropathy and 8 (38%) had postprandial hypotension. There were no significant relationships between changes in blood pressure, heart rate or mesenteric artery blood flow with gastric emptying. Gastric emptying was related to the score for autonomic nerve function (R = 0.55, P &#x0003c; 0.01). There was an inverse relationship between the blood glucose at t = 30 min (R = -0.52, P &#x0003c; 0.05), while the blood glucose at t = 180 min was related directly (R = 0.49, P &#x0003c; 0.05), with gastric emptying.CONCLUSION: In mild to moderate Parkinson&#x02019;s disease, gastric emptying is related to autonomic dysfunction and a determinant of the glycaemic response to oral glucose. 展开更多

Objective:To investigate the effect of different blood glucose levels on viscera injury, oxidative stress response and Wnt5a inflammatory pathway in children with sepsis.Methods:70 children with sepsis treated in our hospital between January 2014 and December 2015 were retrospectively collected and divided into the sepsis group A (blood glucose>10 mmol/L) (n=29) and the sepsis group B (blood glucose ≤10 mmol/L) (n=41) according to the different blood glucose levels, and 50 healthy children who accepted vaccination and were with normal blood glucose levels in our hospital during the same period were selected as healthy control group. The day after admission, RIA method was used to determine liver function indexes;automatic biochemical analyzer was used to determine oxidative stress indexes;enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to detect Wnt5a inflammatory pathway index levels. Results: Liver function indexes total bilirubin (TBIL), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels of sepsis group A were higher than those of sepsis group B and healthy control group (P<0.05);oxidative stress indexes advanced protein oxidation products (AOPPs), lipid hydrogen peroxide (LHP), reactive oxygen species (ROS), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were higher than those of sepsis group B and healthy control group while glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) level was lower than that of sepsis group B and healthy control group (P<0.05);serum Wnt5a inflammatory pathway indexes interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-12 (IL-12) and macrophage inflammatory protein-1β (MIP-1β) levels were higher than those of sepsis group B and healthy control group (P<0.05).Conclusions:Sepsis children with high blood glucose are with severe liver function damage as well as intense oxidative stress and inflammatory response, which are the important indexes for severe illness and poor prognosis. 展开更多

Seventy-two type II diabetic subjects were given Konjac food for 65 days. The data analyzed by multiple F test indicate that the fasting blood glucose (FBG) and the 2-h postprandial blood glucose (PBG) on the 30th and the 65th days after the food was ingested were significantly reduced (P = 0.001, P < 0.001, respectively), as was the glycosylated hemoglobin level at the end of the trial (P < 0.05). The final FBG and PBG of the subjects with initial FBG-O >200 mg% decreased on the average by 51.8 and 84.6 mg%. respectively; those with FBG-0 150-200 mg% decreased by 24.1 and 68.7 mg%; and those with FBG-O < 150 mg% decreased by 4.8 and 21.4 mg%. No significant changes in blood lipid indexes were observed, except that the triglycer-ide values of subjects with hypertriglyceridemia (>200 mg%) significantly decreased by 118.7 mg%. It was concluded that Konjac food is very useful in the prevention and treatment of hyperglycemia. (C)1990 Academic Press. Inc. 展开更多

To study the relationship of the polymorphism of endothelial nitric oxide synthase(eNOS)gene and blood pressure, lipid profiles and blood glucose level.By using PCR-RFLP,the eNOS Glu298Asp gene polymorphism was detected in 184 patients with essential hypertension and 196 matched healthy individuals with normal blood pressure.Taking into account eNOS Glu298Asp poly-morphisms,the relationship of blood pressure with trigly-cerides(TG),total cholesterol(TC),high density lipoprotein(HDL),low density lipoprotein(LDL)and blood glucose level was analyzed. The distribution of eNOS Glu298Asp polymorphism had no significant differ-ence between different blood pressure groups and gender groups, but there was a significant difference between dif-ferent age groups, diastolic blood pressure groups or BMI groups(P<0.05).Asp/Asp genotype significantly increased the risk of hypertension in individuals with serum TC above 5.4 mmol/L(P=0.03,OR=52.65).eNOS Glu298Asp polymorphism and serum lipid could synergis-tically modulate the blood pressure.eNOS Asp/Asp geno-type could significantly increase the risk of hypertension in individuals with serum TC over 5.4 mmol/L.eNOS Glu298Asp in combination with serum TC could be used to predict the risk of hypertension. 展开更多
