The coating layers of Tri-structural Isotropic Particles(TRISO)serve to protect the kernel and act as barriers to fission products.Sintering aids in the silicon carbide matrix variably react with TRISO coating layers, leading to the destruction of the coating layers.Investigating how carbon content affects element diffusion in silicon carbide-based TRISO composite fuel is of great significance for predicting reactor safety. In this study, silicon carbide-based TRISO composite fuels with different carbon contents were prepared by adding varying amounts of phenolic resin to the silicon carbide matrix.X-ray Diffraction(XRD)and Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM)were employed to characterize the phase composition, morphology, and microstructure of the composite fuels. The elemental content in each coating layer of TRISO was quantified using Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy(EDS).The results demonstrated that the addition of phenolic resin promoted the uniform distribution of sintering aids in the silicon carbide matrix. The atomic percentage(at.%)of aluminum(Al)in the pyrolytic carbon layer of the TRISO particles reached its lowest value of 0.55%when the phenolic resin addition was 1%.This is because the addition of phenolic resin caused the Al and silicon(Si)in the matrix to preferentially react with the carbon in the phenolic resin to form a metastable liquid phase, rather than preferentially consuming the pyrolytic carbon in the outer coating layer of the TRISO particles. The findings suggest that carbon addition through phenolic resin incorporation can effectively mitigate the deleterious reactions between the TRISO coating layers and sintering aids, thereby enhancing the durability and safety of silicon carbide-based TRISO composite fuels. 展开更多

The objective of this study is to improve the mechanical properties and machining performance of high thermal conductivity and low expansion silicon carbide dispersion-strengthened hypereutectic aluminum-silicon electronic packaging materials to meet the needs of aviation, aerospace, and electronic packaging fields. We used the powder metallurgy method and high-temperature hot pressing technology to prepare SiC/Al-Si composite materials with different SiC contents(5vol%,10vol%,15vol%,and 20vol%).The results showed that as the SiC content increased, the tensile strength of the composite material first increased and then decreased. The tensile strength was the highest when the SiC content was 15%;the sintering temperature significantly affected the composite material’s structural density and mechanical properties.Findings indicated 700℃was the optimal sintering and the optimal SiC content of SiC/Al-Si composite materials was between 10%and 15%.Besides,the sintering temperature should be strictly controlled to improve the material’s structural density and mechanical properties. 展开更多

The core-shell structure silicon-resin precursor powders were synthesized through coat-mix process and addition of Al2O3-SiO2-Y2O3 composite additives.A series of porous silicon carbide ceramics were produced after molding, carbonization and sintering. The phase, morphology, porosity, thermal conductivity, thermal expansion coefficient, and thermal shock resistance were analyzed. The results show that porous silicon carbide ceramics can be produced at low temperature. The grain size of porous silicon carbide ceramic is small, and the thermal conductivity is enhanced significantly.Composite additives also improve the thermal shock resistance of porous ceramics. The bending strength loss rate after 30 times of thermal shock test of the porous ceramics which were added Al2O3-SiO2-Y2O3 and sintered at 1 650 ℃ is only 6.5%.Moreover,the pore inside of the sample is smooth, and the pore size distribution is uniform.Composite additives make little effect on the thermal expansion coefficient of the porous silicon carbide ceramics. 展开更多

In this experimental study,magnesium(AZ91D)based boron carbide(B4C)and graphite(Gr)particle reinforced hybrid composite materials were manufactured by stir casting. The tribological and mechanical properties of these composite materials were investigated. The results of the tests revealed that the graphite reinforced hybrid composites exhibited a lower wear loss compared to the unreinforced AZ91D alloy and AZ91D–B4C composites. It was found that with an increase in the B4C content, the wear resistance increased monotonically with hardness and ultimate tensile strength decreased. This study revealed that the addition of both a hard reinforcement(e.g.,B4C)and soft reinforcement(e.g.,graphite)significantly improves the wear resistance of magnesium composites. These entire results designate that the hybrid magnesium composites can be considered as an excellent material where high strength, ultimate tensile strength and wear-resistant components are of major importance, primarily in the aerospace and automotive engineering sectors. 展开更多

In the present study, the modified continuum model, quench strengthening and dislocation pile-up model was respectively used to estimate the yield strength of SiCp/AI composites. The experimental results showed that the modified shear lag model or quench strengthening model would underestimate the yield strength of SiCp/AI composites. However, the modified Hall-Petch correlation on the basis of the dislocation pile-up model, expressed as σcy = 244 + 371λ-1/2, fitted very well with the experimental data, which indicated that the strength increase of SiCp/AI composites might be due to the direct blocking of dislocation motion by the particulate-matrix interface. Namely, the dislocation pile-up is the most possible strengthening mechanism for SiCp/AI composites. 展开更多

Reduced graphene oxide(rGO)enhanced B_(4)C ceramics was prepared by SPS sintering, the enhancement effect of rGO on the microstructure and mechanical properties of composites was studied through experiments and numerical simulation. The results show that the composite with 2wt%rGO has the best comprehensive mechanical properties.Compared with pure boron carbide, vickers hardness and bending strength are increased by 4.8%and 21.96%,respectively.The fracture toughness is improved by 25.71%.The microstructure observation shows that the improvement of mechanical properties is mainly attributed to the pullout and bridge mechanism of rGO and the crack deflection.Based on the cohesive force finite element method, the dynamic crack growth process of composites was simulated. The energy dissipation of B_(4)C/rGO multiphase ceramics during crack propagation was calculated and compared with that of pure boron carbide ceramics. The results show that the fracture energy dissipation can be effectively increased by adding graphene. 展开更多

A finite element method based on the cohesive zone model was used to study the micromachining process of nanosized silicon-carbide-particle(SiCp) reinforced aluminum matrix composites. As a hierarchical multiscale simulation method, the parameters for the cohesive zone model were obtained from the stress-displacement curves of the molecular dynamics simulation. The model considers the random properties of the siliconcarbide-particle distribution and the interface of bonding between the silicon carbide particles and the matrix. The machining mechanics was analyzed according to the chip morphology, stress distribution, cutting temperature, and cutting force. The simulation results revealed that the random distribution of nanosized SiCp causes non-uniform interaction between the tool and the reinforcement particles. This deformation mechanics leads to inhomogeneous stress distribution and irregular cutting force variation. 展开更多

Metal matrix composites (MMCs) with high specific stiffness, high strength, improved wear resistance, and thermal properties are being increasingly used in advanced structural, aerospace, automotive, electronics, and wear applications. Aluminum alloy-silicon carbide composites were developed using a new combination of the vortex method and the pressure die-casting technique in the present work. Machining studies were conducted on the aluminum alloy-silicon carbide (SiC) composite work pieces using high speed steel (HSS) end-mill tools in a milling machine at different speeds and feeds. The quantitative studies on the machined work piece show that the surface finish is better for higher speeds and lower feeds. The surface roughness of the plain aluminum alloy is better than that of the aluminum alloy-silicon carbide composites. The studies on tool wear show that flank wear increases with speed and feed. The end-mill tool wear is higher on machining the aluminum alloy-silicon carbide composites than on machining the plain aluminum alloy. 展开更多

The flow characteristic of the Si C particulate was analyzed. The microstructures of different parts of the shell were observed by scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy, and the thermophysical and mechanical properties of the shell were tested. The results show that there exists the segregation phenomenon between the Si C particulate and the liquid phase during thixoforming, the liquid phase flows from the shell, and the Si C particles accumulate at the bottom of the shell. The volume fraction of Si C decreases gradually from the bottom to the walls. Accordingly, the thermal conductivities of bottom center and walls are 178 and 164 W·m-1·K-1, the coefficients of thermal expansion(CTE) are 8.2×10-6 and 12.6×10-6 K-1, respectively. The flexural strength decreases slightly from 437 to 347 MPa. The microstructures and properties of the shell show gradient distribution. 展开更多

For very high temperature annealing (1620℃) after ion implantation for 4H silicon carbide (4H SiC),the residual components of Al and O in the alundum furnace impact seriously on the surface of material, which yields the derivation of SiOC.This causes a significant degradation of the 4H SiC surface characteristics according to the results of surface composition analysis. As validity,Ni/SiC ohmic contact measurement illustrates a higher specific contact resistance than the normal value by a factor of 2~3.Consequently the MESFET fabricated with this kind of 4H SiC material results in a degraded I V output performance compared with that of normal 4H SiC MESFET. 展开更多

The present paper discusses the development of the first and second order model for predicting the chemical etching variables, namely, etching rate, surface roughness and accuracy of advanced ceramics. The first and second order etching rate, surface roughness and accuracy equations were developed using the Response Surface Method (RSM). The etching variables included etching temperature, etching duration, solution and solution concentration. The predictive models’ analyses were supported with the aid of the statistical software package – Design Expert (DE 7). The effects of the individual etching variables and interaction between these variables were also investigated. The study showed that predictive models successfully predicted the etching rate, surface roughness and accuracy readings recorded experimentally with 95% confident interval. The results obtained from the predictive models were also compared with Multilayer Perceptron Artificial Neural Network (ANN). Chemical Etching variables predictive by ANN were in good agreement with those with those obtained by RSM. This observation indicated the potential of ANN in predicting chemical etching variables thus eliminating the need for exhaustive chemical etching in optimization. 展开更多

Amon... High strength-to-weight ratio of non-ferrous alloys, such as aluminium, magnesium and titanium alloys, are considered to be possible replacement of widely accepted steels in transportation and automobile sectors. Among these alloys, magnesium is self explosive and titanium is costlier, and aluminium is most likely to replace steels. Application of aluminium or its alloys is also thought of as an appropriate replacement in defence field, especially to enhance the easiness in mobility of combat vehicles while maintaining the same standard as that of conventional armour grade steels. Hence most of the investigations have been confined to aluminium or its alloys as base material and open an era of developing the newer composite materials to address the major limitation, i.e. tribological properties. The surface composites can be fabricated by incorporating the ceramic carbides like silicon carbide, carbides of transition metals and oxides of aluminium using surface modification techniques, such as high energy laser melt treatment, high energy electron beam irradiation and thermal spray process which are based on fusion route. These techniques yield the fusion related problems, such as interfacial reaction, pin holes, shrinkage cavities or voids and other casting related defects, and pave the way to need of an efficient technique which must be based on solid state. Recently developed friction stir processing technique was used in the present investigation for surface modification of AA7075 aluminum alloy, which is an alternative to steels. In the present investigation, 160 μm sized boron carbide powder was procured and was reduced to 60 μm and 30 μm using high energy ball mill. Subsequently these powders were used to fabricate the surface composites using friction stir processing.Ballistic performance testing as per the military standard(JIS.0108.01) was carried out. In the present work, an analytical method of predicting the ballistic behavior of surface composites was developed. This method was based on energy balance, i.e., the initial energy of impact is same as that of energy absorbed by multi layers. An attempt also has been made to validate the analytical results with the experimental findings. Variation between the analytical and experimental results may be accounted due to the assumptions considering such as isotropic behavior of target and shearing area of contact as cylindrical instead of conical interface As the analytical model yields the ballistic performance in the closer proximity of experimentally obtained, it can be considered to be an approximation to evaluate the ballistic performance of targets. 展开更多

The fundamental experiments were performed to establish the operational conditions required to prepare the microcapsules containing paraffin wax as a phase change material (PCM) and SiC powder with the interfacial polycondensation reaction. It was investigated how SiC powder affected a few characteristics of microcapsules such as the diameters of microcapsules, latent heat storage density, thermal responsibility and supercooling. In the experiment, the concentration of oil soluble surfactant, the revolution speed of impeller for preparing the (O/W) emulsion and the added weight of SiC powder were changed stepwise. The microcapsules containing PCM in which SiC powder was dispersed could be prepared well and characterized. The diameters of microcapsules increased by containing SiC powder and the content of SiC powder could be increased by performing surface modification of SiC powder. Latent heat storage density decreased with the content of SiC powder. Supercooling of PCM and thermal responsibility could be improved to some degree by containing SiC powder. 展开更多

Aluminum foam is a light weight material with good mechanical and energy absorption properties. In this study, aluminum foam composite was fabricated using aluminum powder 6061 and silicon carbide (SiC) powder. Titanium hydride (TiH2) was used as the foaming agent. Cold compact followed by hot pressing (sintering) was used to produce the composite precursor. Foaming was carried out, following the sintering process, by heating the aluminum composite precursor to a temperature above the melting point of aluminum (Al). The linear expansion of the foam and the percent porosity were found to increase as the SiC percentage decreased from 10 to 4%, whereas the density got lower. The percent porosity and linear expansion were both found to increase as the percentage of the foaming agent was increased from 0.5 to 1.5%. Compression stress was evaluated for two different porosity values (40% and 47%), and found to be higher for the samples with lower percent porosity at the same strain value. Effect of shape memory alloy fiber, made of nickel and titanium (NiTi), on the mechanical properties was also investigated. The compression stress was higher, in the densification region, for the samples in which NiTi was used. 展开更多

Fabrication of MCCs (Metal Ceramic Composites) and ceramic brazing requires improved wetting properties are often absent in various ceramic/metals systems. This report summarizes a comprehensive study concerning the wetting properties of boron carbide in contact with non-reactive metals such as Cu, Au, Ag, and Sn. In order to improve wetting, three different reactive elements were added to the melts;Si, which has relatively high affinity to C, leads to SiC formation and changes the stoichiometric boron carbide composition (B4C) towards lower carbon content;Ti, which displays high affinity to B, leads to TiB2 formation and free carbon precipitation at the interface;and finally, Al, which forms borocarbide phases at the interface. It was found that Cu is unusual with respect to boron carbide compared the other non-reactive metals. The most important difference is its ability to dissolve ~25 at% of B, which makes B adequate as an additive to Cu in addition to Si, Ti, and Al. When boron was used as an alloying element, its effect on wetting behavior was attributed to altering the boron carbide composition in contact with boron-containing melts. It was concluded that the most important properties of boron carbide that affect wetting phenomena are the relatively low chemical stability and the existence of a wide composition range (B4C-B10C). The first property determines the possibility of boron carbide to react with liquid metals (by dissolution or formation of new phases) and the second offers an additional degree of freedom to improve its wetting by changing the composition of the ceramic phase. 展开更多
