The experimental results showed that the modified shear lag model or quench strengthening model would underestimate the yield strength of SiCp/AI composites. However, the modified Hall-Petch correlation on the basis of the dislocation pile-up model, expressed as σcy = 244 + 371λ-1/2, fitted very well with the experimental data, which indicated that the strength increase of SiCp/AI composites might be due to the direct blocking of dislocation motion by the particulate-matrix interface. Namely, the dislocation pile-up is the most possible strengthening mechanism for SiCp/AI composites.展开更多

As a hierarchical multiscale simulation method, the parameters for the cohesive zone model were obtained from the stress-displacement curves of the molecular dynamics simulation. The model considers the random properties of the siliconcarbide-particle distribution and the interface of bonding between the silicon carbide particles and the matrix. The machining mechanics was analyzed according to the chip morphology, stress distribution, cutting temperature, and cutting force. The simulation results revealed that the random distribution of nanosized SiCp causes non-uniform interaction between the tool and the reinforcement particles. Amon...High strength-to-weight ratio of non-ferrous alloys, such as aluminium, magnesium and titanium alloys, are considered to be possible replacement of widely accepted steels in transportation and automobile sectors. Among these alloys, magnesium is self explosive and titanium is costlier, and aluminium is most likely to replace steels. Application of aluminium or its alloys is also thought of as an appropriate replacement in defence field, especially to enhance the easiness in mobility of combat vehicles while maintaining the same standard as that of conventional armour grade steels. Hence most of the investigations have been confined to aluminium or its alloys as base material and open an era of developing the newer composite materials to address the major limitation, i.e. tribological properties. The surface composites can be fabricated by incorporating the ceramic carbides like silicon carbide, carbides of transition metals and oxides of aluminium using surface modification techniques, such as high energy laser melt treatment, high energy electron beam irradiation and thermal spray process which are based on fusion route. These techniques yield the fusion related problems, such as interfacial reaction, pin holes, shrinkage cavities or voids and other casting related defects, and pave the way to need of an efficient technique which must be based on solid state. Recently developed friction stir processing technique was used in the present investigation for surface modification of AA7075 aluminum alloy, which is an alternative to steels. In the present investigation, 160 μm sized boron carbide powder was procured and was reduced to 60 μm and 30 μm using high energy ball mill. Subsequently these powders were used to fabricate the surface composites using friction stir processing.Ballistic performance testing as per the military standard(JIS.0108.01) was carried out. In the present work, an analytical method of predicting the ballistic behavior of surface composites was developed. This method was based on energy balance, i.e., the initial energy of impact is same as that of energy absorbed by multi layers. An attempt also has been made to validate the analytical results with the experimental findings. Variation between the analytical and experimental results may be accounted due to the assumptions considering such as isotropic behavior of target and shearing area of contact as cylindrical instead of conical interface As the analytical model yields the ballistic performance in the closer proximity of experimentally obtained, it can be considered to be an approximation to evaluate the ballistic performance of targets.展开更多

It was investigated how SiC powder affected a few characteristics of microcapsules such as the diameters of microcapsules, latent heat storage density, thermal responsibility and supercooling. In the experiment, the concentration of oil soluble surfactant, the revolution speed of impeller for preparing the (O/W) emulsion and the added weight of SiC powder were changed stepwise. The microcapsules containing PCM in which SiC powder was dispersed could be prepared well and characterized. The diameters of microcapsules increased by containing SiC powder and the content of SiC powder could be increased by performing surface modification of SiC powder. Latent heat storage density decreased with the content of SiC powder. Supercooling of PCM and thermal responsibility could be improved to some degree by containing SiC powder.展开更多

In this study, aluminum foam composite was fabricated using aluminum powder 6061 and silicon carbide (SiC) powder. Titanium hydride (TiH2) was used as the foaming agent. Cold compact followed by hot pressing (sintering) was used to produce the composite precursor. Foaming was carried out, following the sintering process, by heating the aluminum composite precursor to a temperature above the melting point of aluminum (Al). The linear expansion of the foam and the percent porosity were found to increase as the SiC percentage decreased from 10 to 4%, whereas the density got lower. The percent porosity and linear expansion were both found to increase as the percentage of the foaming agent was increased from 0.5 to 1.5%. Compression stress was evaluated for two different porosity values (40% and 47%), and found to be higher for the samples with lower percent porosity at the same strain value. Effect of shape memory alloy fiber, made of nickel and titanium (NiTi), on the mechanical properties was also investigated. The compression stress was higher, in the densification region, for the samples in which NiTi was used.展开更多

This report summarizes a comprehensive study concerning the w...Fabrication of MCCs (Metal Ceramic Composites) and ceramic brazing requires improved wetting properties are often absent in various ceramic/metals systems. This report summarizes a comprehensive study concerning the wetting properties of boron carbide in contact with non-reactive metals such as Cu, Au, Ag, and Sn. In order to improve wetting, three different reactive elements were added to the melts;Si, which has relatively high affinity to C, leads to SiC formation and changes the stoichiometric boron carbide composition (B4C) towards lower carbon content;Ti, which displays high affinity to B, leads to TiB2 formation and free carbon precipitation at the interface;and finally, Al, which forms borocarbide phases at the interface. It was found that Cu is unusual with respect to boron carbide compared the other non-reactive metals. The most important difference is its ability to dissolve ~25 at% of B, which makes B adequate as an additive to Cu in addition to Si, Ti, and Al. When boron was used as an alloying element, its effect on wetting behavior was attributed to altering the boron carbide composition in contact with boron-containing melts. It was concluded that the most important properties of boron carbide that affect wetting phenomena are the relatively low chemical stability and the existence of a wide composition range (B4C-B10C). The first property determines the possibility of boron carbide to react with liquid metals (by dissolution or formation of new phases) and the second offers an additional degree of freedom to improve its wetting by changing the composition of the ceramic phase.展开更多

文摘The coating layers of Tri-structural Isotropic Particles(TRISO)serve to protect the kernel and act as barriers to fission products.Sintering aids in the silicon carbide matrix variably react with TRISO coating layers, leading to the destruction of the coating layers.Investigating how carbon content affects element diffusion in silicon carbide-based TRISO composite fuel is of great significance for predicting reactor safety. In this study, silicon carbide-based TRISO composite fuels with different carbon contents were prepared by adding varying amounts of phenolic resin to the silicon carbide matrix.X-ray Diffraction(XRD)and Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM)were employed to characterize the phase composition, morphology, and microstructure of the composite fuels. The elemental content in each coating layer of TRISO was quantified using Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy(EDS).The results demonstrated that the addition of phenolic resin promoted the uniform distribution of sintering aids in the silicon carbide matrix. The atomic percentage(at.%)of aluminum(Al)in the pyrolytic carbon layer of the TRISO particles reached its lowest value of 0.55%when the phenolic resin addition was 1%.This is because the addition of phenolic resin caused the Al and silicon(Si)in the matrix to preferentially react with the carbon in the phenolic resin to form a metastable liquid phase, rather than preferentially consuming the pyrolytic carbon in the outer coating layer of the TRISO particles. The findings suggest that carbon addition through phenolic resin incorporation can effectively mitigate the deleterious reactions between the TRISO coating layers and sintering aids, thereby enhancing the durability and safety of silicon carbide-based TRISO composite fuels.

Variation between the analytical and experimental results may be accounted due to the assumptions considering such as isotropic behavior of target and shearing area of contact as cylindrical instead of conical interface As the analytical model yields the ballistic performance in the closer proximity of experimentally obtained, it can be considered to be an approximation to evaluate the ballistic performance of targets.
文摘The fundamental experiments were performed to establish the operational conditions required to prepare the microcapsules containing paraffin wax as a phase change material (PCM) and SiC powder with the interfacial polycondensation reaction. Supercooling of PCM and thermal responsibility could be improved to some degree by containing SiC powder.
文摘Electroless nickel (copper)-phosphorus-silicon carbide (SiC)-polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) composite coatings were prepared by adding SiC and PTFE into electroless nickel (copper)-phosphorus alloy baths. The effects of addition of SiC and PTFE on depositing rate, microhardness, wear resistance and anti-friction of the resulted composite coatings were studied. The results indicated that electroless nickel (copper)-phosphorus alloy coatings were greatly improved in depositing rate, microhardness, wear resistance and antifriction by co-deposited proper amount of SiC and PTFE.
文摘Aluminum foam is a light weight material with good mechanical and energy absorption properties. The compression stress was higher, in the densification region, for the samples in which NiTi was used.
文摘Fabrication of MCCs (Metal Ceramic Composites) and ceramic brazing requires improved wetting properties are often absent in various ceramic/metals systems. The first property determines the possibility of boron carbide to react with liquid metals (by dissolution or formation of new phases) and the second offers an additional degree of freedom to improve its wetting by changing the composition of the ceramic phase.
