Economic research shows that public infrastructure investment is a powerful driver of business productivity,investment,and economic growth.This paper discusses the drivers for broadband and analyses the various broadb...Economic research shows that public infrastructure investment is a powerful driver of business productivity,investment,and economic growth.This paper discusses the drivers for broadband and analyses the various broadband access technologies and their respective market shares.Various policy and regulatory issues are also discussed.Broadband access,along with its extended value-added services and applications,has now become the most important growth driver for fixed operators.Digital Subscriber Line(DSL) is the leading access technology due to already available copper infrastructure and WiMAX is emerging new technology,especially in Asia/Pacific(APAC) region,due to its speedy and low cost infrastructure deployment characteristics. Countries with high penetration of broadband users such as South Korea,Japan and Canada have all implemented conscious policies for the growth of broadband in their countries.Governments in APAC region,especially the developing countries,will have to play the leading role for broadband due to its importance in economic and social growth.展开更多

However,some difficulties emerged during the application and industrialization of the BWA system,which calls for typical service models,key technology innovations and backbone support from broadband Internet. This article introduces a Broadband Wireless Multimedia (BWM) access system. It aims to build a new-type "triple play" BWA network by integrating terrestrial digital TV system and the BWA system,and by taking broadband Internet as its core network platform. A primary research shows that the new BWA system is an effective solution to the existing difficulties of BWA system. As a first step to develop an ASIC product, the entire system is designed on a field programmable gate array (FPGA) with an embedded CPU. To reduce working frequency of the FPGA, the byte-to-word conversion is proposed. Propagation delays are equalized by ranging procedure so as to avoid data collision. Implementations of synchronization, classification, as well as Linux porting are illustrated in detail. The interface between the FPGA and CPU are also presented. Experimental results show that the proposed system can properly function in a relatively low cost FPGA.展开更多
Broadband over Power Line (BPL) is an alternative means of providing high-speed Internet access, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), and other broadband services to homes and businesses by using the existing medium v...Broadband over Power Line (BPL) is an alternative means of providing high-speed Internet access, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), and other broadband services to homes and businesses by using the existing medium voltage (MV) and low voltage (LV) power lines. This paper provides a comprehensive understanding about BPL with its implementation prospects. In this context, the existing power grid infrastructures are discussed elaborately. BPL system functionality with its components and its benefits over other access technologies is also pointed out. Implementation scenarios for various deployment options are illustrated here. The different implementation challenges for BPL system, such as the characteristics of power lines, attenuation problem, noise, potential interference with the other radio frequencies are also presented with their remedies. Comparative analysis between several broadband access technologies shows the feasibility of BPL deployments all over the world.展开更多
The Burst Time Plan(BTP) generation is the key for resource allocation in Broadband Satellite Multimedia(BSM) system.The main purpose of this paper is to minimize the system response time to users' request caused ...The Burst Time Plan(BTP) generation is the key for resource allocation in Broadband Satellite Multimedia(BSM) system.The main purpose of this paper is to minimize the system response time to users' request caused by BTP generation as well as maintain the Quality of Service(QoS) and improve the channel utilization efficiency.Traditionally the BTP is generated periodically in order to simplify the implementation of the resource allocation algorithm.Based on the analysis we find that Periodical BTP Generation(P-BTPG) method cannot guarantee the delay performance,channel utilization efficiency and QoS simultaneously,especially when the capacity requests arrived randomly.The Optimized BTP Generation(O-BTPG) method is given based on the optimal scheduling period and scheduling latency without considering the signaling overhead.Finally,a novel Asynchronous BTP Generation(A-BTPG) method is proposed which is invoked according to users' requests.A BSM system application scenario is simulated.Simulation results show that A-BTPG is a trade-off between the performance and signaling overhead which can improve the system performance insensitive to the traffic pattern.This method can be used in the ATM onboard switching satellite system and further more can be expended to Digital Video Broadcasting-Return Channel Satellite(DVB-RCS) system or IP onboard routing BSM system in the future.展开更多
