Unfortunately, some architecture features fostered by energy and environmental certifications do not comply with fire prevention codes. Several factors can influence a building's energy efficiency and fire safety, such as bigger or smaller glass areas, building material thermal inertia, and the use of sustainable solutions such as green roofs. In this work, a methodology for integrating energy efficiency and fire prevention in green buildings is presented. A case study comparing a full glass skin and a building with 40% window size is considered. Also, the methodology permits modifications for obtaining a safe and energy efficient building.展开更多

The program was applied to simulation of the temperature and stress field of the Cao'e Sluice during the construction period. From the calculated results, we can find that the temperaiure and stress of concrete cooled with plastic pipes are much lower than those of concrete without pipes. Moreover, plastic pipes could not be corroded by seawater. That is to say, a good effect of temperature control and cracking prevention can be achieved, which provides a useful reference for other similar nearshore concrete projects.展开更多

Additionally, the cracking behaviors in U-shaped model were analyzed with shear stress and numerical simulated with ANSYS software. The experimental results show that the deformation increases with the increase of the vertical load. The vertical load results in different deformation between the bearing wall and non-bearing wall, which leads to cracking on the non-beating wall. The rapid deformation happens at 160 kN and cracks occur firstly at the top section of non-bearing wall near to the bearing wall. New cracks are observed and the previous cracks are enlarged and developed with the increase of vertical load. The maximum crack opening reaches 12 mm, and the non-bearing wall is about to collapse when the vertical load arrives at 380 kN. Theoretical analysis indicates that the shear stress reaches the maximum value at the top section of the non-bearing wall, and thus cracks tend to happen at the top section of the non-bearing wall. Numerical simulation results about the cracking behaviors are in good agreement with experiments results.展开更多

Objectives: 1) to build student capacity;and 2) to evaluate the results of student capacity building. Method: Participatory Action Research: PAR was applied in three phases: 1) the school-based preparation phase;2) the process of building student capacity phase, and 3) evaluation of the results of the student capacity building. Independent T-Test statistical method was used to analyze student capacity both before and after the intervention. Larval Indices were determined through ratio analysis. Results: Prior to the intervention, there was no clear strategy for combating dengue. In this study, three groups were formed to build student capacity: a leader group, a non-leader group, and a support group. The leader group (48 student leaders), critical to the study, was set as a dengue club named “Eliminate Ades Aegypti, the culprit of dengue” which focused on eight sets of activities: “Dengue or Death”, “Seniors educating juniors”, “Reward for good answers”, “Dengue monitoring team”, “Youth to expel mosquetoes”, “Mosquito or busy”, “Garbage elimination of Pondok”, and “Essential doctors”. The level of student capacity for the prevention and control of dengue of a sampling of 308 student representatives of the Pondok (Islamic school) showed an increase after intervention ( (SD);56.78 (17.06);65.33(15.36) and different statistic significant (P < 0.001). The Larval indices ratio levels had decreased from the original levels (BI = 244, HI = 45, and CI = 26) after intervention (BI = 137, HI = 39, and CI = 19). Dengue morbidity and mortality rates were not found during the study. Discussion: Although there had been an increase in student capacity, a decrease in the larval indices ratio, and the absence of a dengue epidemiology index, the high risk of a dengue epidemic might still be found in the school because the ratio of larval indices were higher than the standard index. Then, the committed participation of students, school, and communities around the school vicinity is needed in building student capacity of dengue prevention and control.展开更多

Whereby, preventive maintenance is an effective approach to enhance the reliability and quality of a system and its components. This study seeks to investigate the characteristics of preventive maintenance towards the overall performance in building maintenance. Case study approach is adopted to identify the maintenance characteristics and aspects that lead to good performance. The research findings demonstrate that the most significant maintenance characteristics towards overall performance are skill and knowledge of maintenance labour, quality of spare parts and materials, length of predetermined maintenance interval, skill and knowledge of maintenance manager, capability to adopt maintenance equipment and technique, budget allocation for acquisition of maintenance data, reliability of maintenance data, as well as frequency of monitoring and inspection. As a conclusion, the significant maintenance characteristics must be taken into consideration to achieve optimal maintenance performance. In order to improve the effectiveness of maintenance strategy and the maintenance performance, the study recommends practice and provision of communication platform such as meeting and customer satisfaction survey that involves all the key participants from clients to customers.展开更多

In conclusion, emphasis will be placed on the choice of the most efficient method in terms of material, technology and cost.展开更多
