Instrument calibration is vital to a successful control system because signal inputs to the system controllers come from such instruments. This paper presents a method for actualizing a standard low-cost loop calibrator for the famous 4-20 mA electrical signaling scheme. The loop calibrator generates a linear current signal from 4 to 20 mA over a 250 ? typical process instrument load for calibration. The realization of the loop calibrator relies on a voltage-to-current converter to build a constant current source. The voltage controlled constant current source is built from discrete components and an op-amp to keep the cost low. Results from simulations and the prototype demonstrate the performance of the 4-20 mA loop calibrator which utilizes a greatly reduced number of components. The cost of these components is approximately 34% of the least expensive calibrator sampled, though other production costs are not included. This conclusion reinforces the fact that loop calibrators can be cheaper. 展开更多

Aim: Measurement of B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) is widely used as a diagnostic and risk assessment tool for cardiovascular disease. Recent studies have demonstrated that BNP-32 and its precursor proBNP circulate in the blood stream, and that most commercial BNP immunoassays measure both forms. However, recombinant or synthetic BNP-32 is used as the standard for those BNP immunoassays. This gap between clinical samples and the standard might be a potential source of variation in BNP measurements among assays. The purpose of this study is to validate a more suitable calibrator for BNP immunoassays. Methods: External BNP calibrators containing both BNP-32 and glycosylated proBNP were prepared at two concentration levels. Target BNP concentrations of the low and high levels were 40 and 160 pg/mL, respectively. And to reflect clinical samples, the molar ratios of BNP-32 to glycosylated proBNP in these concentration levels were adjusted to 50:50 and 25:75, respectively. BNP concentrations of plasma samples along with the external BNP calibrators were measured at two commercial labs and using an automated analyzer MI02 Shionogi®BNP (MI02). These samples and the calibrators were also measured using an immunoradiometric assay (IRMA) as a standard assay procedure. Concentrations of the plasma samples measured at the labs or using the MI02 were adjusted according to a comparison of the measured concentrations of the external BNP calibrators with the IRMA. Results: After measured concentrations of the plasma samples were adjusted using the external BNP calibrators, the correlation between each measurement and the IRMA was improved. The range of the slopes according to Passing-Bablok regression analysis narrowed from 0.628 - 0.955 to 0.911 - 1.005. Conclusions: Our data suggests that a mixture of BNP-32 and glycosylated proBNP at different ratios by concentration level is suitable for calibration to minimize variations in BNP measurements among immunoassays. 展开更多

Understanding the vertical distribution of ozone is crucial when assessing both its horizontal and vertical transport,as well as when analyzing the physical and chemical properties of the atmosphere. One of the most effective ways to obtain high spatial resolution ozone profiles is through satellite observations. The Environmental Trace Gases Monitoring Instrument(EMI)deployed on the Gaofen-5 satellite is the first Chinese ultraviolet-visiblehyperspectralspectrometer.However,retrieving ozone profiles using backscattered radiance values measured by the EMI is challenging due to unavailable measurement errors and a low signal-to-noise ratio. The algorithm developed for the Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument did not allow us to retrieve 87%of the EMI pixels. Therefore,we developed an algorithm specific to the characteristics of the EMI.The fitting residuals are smaller than 0.3%in most regions. The retrieved ozone profiles were in good agreement with ozonesonde data, with maximum mean biases of 20%at five latitude bands.By applying EMI averaging kemels to the ozonesonde profiles, the integrated stratospheric column ozone and tropospheric column ozone also showed excellent agreement with ozo-nesonde data. The lower layers(0-7.5 km)of the EMI ozone profiles reflected the seasonal variation in surface ozone derived from the China National Environmental Monitoring Center(CNEMC).However, the upper layers(9.7-16.7 km)of the ozone profiles show different trends, with the ozone peak occurring at an altitude of 9.7-16.7 km in March,2019.A stratospheric intrusion event in central China from August 11 to 15,2019,is captured using the EMI ozone profiles, potential vorticity data, and relative humidity data. The increase in the CNEMC ozone concentration showed that downward transport enhanced surface ozone pollution. 展开更多

Numerical weather prediction(NWP)models have always presented large forecasting errors of surface wind speeds over regions with complex terrain. In this study, surface wind forecasts from an operational NWP model, the SMS-WARR(Shanghai Meteorological Service-WRF ADAS Rapid Refresh System),are analyzed to quantitatively reveal the relationships between the forecasted surface wind speed errors and terrain features, with the intent of providing clues to better apply the NWP model to complex terrain regions. The terrain features are described by three parameters:the standard deviation of the model grid-scale orography, terrain height error of the model, and slope angle. The results show that the forecast bias has a unimodal distribution with a change in the standard deviation of orography. The minimum ME(the mean value of bias)is 1.2 m s^(-1) when the standard deviation is between 60 and 70 m.A positive correlation exists between bias and terrain height error, with the ME increasing by 10%−30%for every 200 m increase in terrain height error. The ME decreases by 65.6%when slope angle increases from(0.5°−1.5°)to larger than 3.5°for uphill winds but increases by 35.4%when the absolute value of slope angle increases from(0.5°−1.5°)to(2.5°−3.5°)for downhill winds.Several sensitivity experiments are carried out with a model output statistical(MOS)calibration model for surface wind speeds and ME(RMSE)has been reduced by 90%(30%)by introducing terrain parameters, demonstrating the value of this study. 展开更多

In a crowd density estimation dataset, the annotation of crowd locations is an extremely laborious task, and they are not taken into the evaluation metrics. In this paper,we aim to reduce the annotation cost of crowd datasets, and propose a crowd density estimation method based on weakly-supervised learning,in the absence of crowd position supervision information, which directly reduces the number of crowds by using the number of pedestrians in the image as the supervised information. For this purpose,we design a new training method, which exploits the correlation between global and local image features by incremental learning to train the network.Specifically,we design a parent-child network(PC-Net)focusing on the global and local image respectively, and propose a linear feature calibration structure to train the PC-Net simultaneously, and the child network learns feature transfer factors and feature bias weights, and uses the transfer factors and bias weights to linearly feature calibrate the features extracted from the Parent network,to improve the convergence of the network by using local features hidden in the crowd images. In addition,we use the pyramid vision transformer as the backbone of the PC-Net to extract crowd features at different levels, and design a global-local feature loss function(L2).We combine it with a crowd counting loss(LC)to enhance the sensitivity of the network to crowd features during the training process, which effectively improves the accuracy of crowd density estimation. The experimental results show that the PC-Net significantly reduces the gap between fullysupervised and weakly-supervised crowd density estimation, and outperforms the comparison methods on five datasets of Shanghai Tech Part A,ShanghaiTech Part B,UCF_CC_50,UCF_QNRF and JHU-CROWD++. 展开更多

The tensile-shear interactive damage(TSID)model is a novel and powerful constitutive model for rock-like materials. This study proposes a methodology to calibrate the TSID model parameters to simulate sandstone. The basic parameters of sandstone are determined through a series of static and dynamic tests, including uniaxial compression,Brazilian disc, triaxial compression under varying confining pressures, hydrostatic compression, and dynamic compression and tensile tests with a split Hopkinson pressure bar.Based on the sandstone test results from this study and previous research,a step-by-step procedure for parameter calibration is outlined, which accounts for the categories of the strength surface, equation of state(EOS),strain rate effect, and damage. The calibrated parameters are verified through numerical tests that correspond to the experimental loading conditions.Consistency between numerical results and experimental data indicates the precision and reliability of the calibrated parameters. The methodology presented in this study is scientifically sound, straightforward, and essential for improving the TSID model.Furthermore,it has the potential to contribute to other rock constitutive models, particularly new user-defined models. 展开更多

Concrete slabs are widely used in modern railways to increase the inherent resilient quality of the tracks, provide safe and smooth rides, and reduce the maintenance frequency. In this paper, the elastic performance of a novel slab trackform for high-speed railways is investigated using three-dimensional finite element modelling in Abaqus. It is then compared to the performance of a ballasted track.First, slab and ballasted track models are developed to replicate the full-scale testing of track sections.Once the models are calibrated with the experimental results, the novel slab model is developed and compared against the calibrated slab track results. The slab and ballasted track models are then extended to create linear dynamic models, considering the track geodynamics, and simulating train passages at various speeds, for which the Ledsgard documented case was used to validate the models.Trains travelling at low and high speeds are analysed to investigate the track deflections and the wave propagation in the soil, considering the issues associated with critical speeds.Various train loading methods are discussed, and the most practical approach is retained and described. Moreover, correlations are made between the geotechnical parameters of modern high-speed rail and conventional standards. It is found that considering the same ground condition, the slab track deflections are considerably smaller than those of the ballasted track at high speeds, while they show similar behaviour at low speeds. 展开更多

In recent years, semiconductor survey meters have been developed and are in increasing demand worldwide. This study determined if it is possible to use the X-ray system installed in each medical facility to calculate the time constant of a semiconductor survey meter and confirm the meter’s function. An additional filter was attached to the medical X-ray system to satisfy the standards of N-60 to N-120, more copper plates were added as needed, and the first and second half-value layers were calculated to enable comparisons of the facility’s X-ray system quality with the N-60 to N-120 quality values. Next, we used a medical X-ray system to measure the leakage dose and calculate the time constant of the survey meter. The functionality of the meter was then checked and compared with the energy characteristics of the meter. The experimental results showed that it was possible to use a medical X-ray system to reproduce the N-60 to N-120 radiation quality values and to calculate the time constant from the measured results, assuming actual leakage dosimetry for that radiation quality. We also found that the calibration factor was equivalent to that of the energy characteristics of the survey meter. 展开更多

Global efforts for environmental cleanliness through the control of gaseous emissions from vehicles are gaining momentum and attracting increasing attention. Calibration plays a crucial role in these efforts by ensuring the quantitative assessment of emissions for informed decisions on environmental treatments. This paper describes a method for the calibration of CO/CO2 monitors used for periodic inspections of vehicles in cites. The calibration was performed in the selected ranges: 900 - 12,000 µmol/mol for CO and 2000 - 20,000 µmol/mol for CO2. The traceability of the measurement results to the SI units was ensured by using certified reference materials from CO/N2 and CO2/N2 primary gas mixtures. The method performance was evaluated by assessing its linearity, accuracy, precision, bias, and uncertainty of the calibration results. The calibration data exhibited a strong linear trend with R² values close to 1, indicating an excellent fit between the measured values and the calibration lines. Precision, expressed as relative standard deviation (%RSD), ranged from 0.48 to 4.56% for CO and from 0.97 to 3.53% for CO2, staying well below the 5% threshold for reporting results at a 95% confidence level. Accuracy measured as percent recovery, was consistently high (≥ 99.1%) for CO and ranged from 84.90% to 101.54% across the calibration range for CO2. In addition, the method exhibited minimal bias for both CO and CO2 calibrations and thus provided a reliable and accurate approach for calibrating CO/CO2 monitors used in vehicle inspections. Thus, it ensures the effectiveness of exhaust emission control for better environment. 展开更多

To make the problems of existing high requirements of calibration tools, complex global calibration process addressed for monocular multi-view visual measurement system during measurement, in the paper, a global calibration method is proposed for the geometric properties of rotational correlation motion and the absolute orientation of the field of view without over lap. Firstly, a dual-camera system is constructed for photographing and collecting the rotating image sequence of two flat targets rigidly connected by a long rod at different positions, and based on the known parameters, such as, target feature image, world coordinates, camera internal parameters and so on, then the global PnP optimization method is used to solve the rotation axis and the reference point at different positions; Then, the absolute orientation matrix is constructed based on the parameters of rotation axis, reference point and connecting rod length obtained by this method. In the end, the singular value decomposition method is used to find the optimal rotation matrix, and then get the translation matrix. It’s shown based on simulation and actual tests that in comparison with the existing methods, the maximum attitude and pose errors is 0.0083˚ and 0.3657 mm, respectively, which improves the accuracy by 27.8% and 24.4%, respectively. The calibration device in this paper is simple, and there are no parallel, vertical and coplanar requirements between multiple rotating positions. At the same time, in view of the calibration accuracy, the accuracy requirements of most application scenarios can be met. 展开更多

The rapid urbanization of the cities such as Bujumbura, economic capital of Burundi, is one of these factors. The very first characterization of the spatio-temporal variability of PM2.5 in Bujumbura and the forecasting of PM2.5 concentration have been conducted in this paper using data collected during a year, from August 2022 to August 2023, by low-cost sensors installed in Bujumbura city. For each commune, an hourly, daily and seasonal analysis was carried out and the results showed that the mass concentrations of PM2.5 in the three municipalities differ from one commune to another. The average hourly and annual PM2.5 concentrations exceed the World Health Organization standards. The range is between 28.3 and 35.0 μg/m3. Laboratory testing of phasor measurement units(PMUs)guarantees their performance under laboratory conditions. However, many factors may cause PMU measurement problems in actual power systems, resulting in the malfunction of PMU-based applications. Therefore, field PMUs need to be tested and calibrated to ensure their performance and data quality. In this paper(Part I),a general framework for the field PMU test and calibration in different scenarios is proposed. This framework consists of a PMU calibrator and an analysis center, where the PMU calibrator provides the reference values for PMU error analysis. Two steps are implemented to ensure the calibrator accuracy for complex field signals:①by analyzing the frequency-domain probability distribution of random noise,a Fourier-transform-based signal denoising method is proposed to improve the anti-interference capability of the PMU calibrator;and②a general synchrophasor estimation method based on complex bandpass filters is presented for accurate synchrophasor estimations in multiple scenarios.Simulation and experimental test results demonstrate that the PMU calibrator has a higher accuracy than that of other calibrator algorithms and is suitable for field PMU test. The analysis center for evaluating the performance of field PMUs and the applications of the proposed field PMU test system are provided in detail in Part II of the next-step research. 展开更多

Since its introduction, discontinuous deformation analysis(DDA)has been widely used in different areas of rock mechanics.By dividing large blocks into subblocks and introducing artificial joints,DDA can be applied to rock fracture simulation. However, parameter calibration,a fundamental issue in discontinuum methods, has not received enough attention in DDA.In this study, the parameter calibration of DDA for intact rock is carefully studied. To this end,a subblock DDA with Voronoi tessellation is presented first. Then,a modified contact constitutive law is introduced,in which the tensile and shear meso-strengths are modified to be independent of the bond lengths. This improvement can prevent the unjustified preferential failure of short edges.A method for imposing confining pressure is also introduced.Thereafter, sensitivity analysis is performed to investigate the influence of the calculated parameters and meso-parameters on the mechanical properties of modeled rock.Based on the sensitivity analysis,a unified calibration procedure is suggested for both cases with and without confining pressure. Finally, the calibration procedure is applied to two examples, including a biaxial compression test. The results show that the proposed Voronoi-based DDA can simulate rock fracture with and without confining pressure very well after careful parameter calibration. 展开更多

Due to differences in the properties of composition materials and construction techniques, unreinforced masonry is characterized by low strength, anisotropy, nonuniformity, and low ductility. In order to accurately simulate the mechanical behavior of unreinforced brick masonry walls under static and dynamic loads,a new elastoplastic damage constitutive model was proposed and the corresponding subroutine was developed based on the concrete material constitutive model. In the proposed constitutive model, the Rankine strength theory and the Drucker-Prager strength theory were used to define the tensile and compressive yield surface function of materials, respectively. Moreover, the stress updating algorithm was modified to consider the tensile plastic permanent deformation of masonry materials. To verify the accuracy of the proposed constitutive model, numerical simulations of the brick masonry under monotonic and cyclic uniaxial tension and compression loads were carried out.Comparisons among the numerical and theoretical and experimental results show that the proposed model can properly reflect the masonry material mechanical properties.Furthermore, the numerical models of four pieces of masonry walls with different mortar strengths were established.Low cyclic loadings were applied and the results show that the proposed constitutive model can properly simulate the wall shear failure characteristics, and the force-displacement hysteretic curves obtained by numerical simulation are in good agreement with the tests.Overall, the proposed elastic-plastic damage constitutive model can simulate the nonlinear behavior of unreinforced brick masonry walls very well, and can be used to predict the structural response of masonry walls. 展开更多

To systematically validate and calibrate the theory and technology of the deep in-situ conditionpreserved coring, the in-situ conditions at different depths should be simulated, and the full-size coring tests should be carried out in this simulated environment. Therefore, a deep-rock in-situ conditionpreserved coring calibration platform was designed and developed. The self-tightening sealing structure and the quick-disassembly structure were designed on the basis of an innovative segmented nonuniformdiameter structure, which was a breakthrough from the traditional high-pressure vessel frame and was verified by finite element simulation and actual testing under extreme working conditions, respectively. To simulate the actual deep in-situ environment with a temperature of 150℃ and pressure of 140 MPa for a large Φ450 mm×H1400 mm core, temperature and pressure control systems were designed by coupling, and a pre-embedded high-pressure-resistant temperature sensor was designed. Finally, highprecision assembly automation, complex movement coordination of the coring device with the platform, and rotary dynamic sealing were achieved by utilizing the combination of adaptive cabin body servo control and an adaptive mechanical structure in a limited space, laying a solid foundation for the calibration of in-situ condition-preserved coring. 展开更多

The whole angle mode gyroscope(WAMG)is considered to be the next generation architecture, but it is suffered from the asymmetry errors to conduct real products. This paper proposes a novel high frequency injection based approach for the error parameters online identification for the WAMG.The significance is that it can separate physical and error fingerprints to enable online calibration. The nonlinear WAMG dynamics are discretized to meet the requirement of numerical precision and computation efficiency. The optimized estimation methods are then constructed and compared to track asymmetry error parameters continuously. In the validation part, its results firstly prove that the proposed scheme can accurately identify constant asymmetry parameters with an overall tracking error of less than 1 ppm and the extreme numerical convergence can reach 10^(-12)ppm.Under the dynamic asymmetry variation condition, the root mean square errors(RMSE)indicate that the tracking accuracy can reach the level of10^(-3),which shows the robustness of the proposed scheme. In summary, the proposed method can effectively estimate the WAMG asymmetry errors online with satisfied performance and practical values. 展开更多

Reconstructing a three-dimensional(3D)environment is an indispensable technique to make augmented reality and augmented virtuality feasible.A Kinect device is an efficient tool for reconstructing 3D environments, and using multiple Kinect devices enables the enhancement of reconstruction density and expansion of virtual spaces. To employ multiple devices simultaneously,Kinect devices need to be calibrated with respect to each other. There are several schemes available that calibrate 3D images generated frommultiple Kinect devices, including themarker detection method. In this study,we introduce a markerless calibration technique for Azure Kinect devices that avoids the drawbacks of marker detection, which directly affects calibration accuracy;it offers superior userfriendliness, efficiency, and accuracy.Further,we applied a joint tracking algorithm to approximate the calibration.Traditional methods require the information of multiple joints for calibration;however,Azure Kinect, the latest version of Kinect, requires the information of only one joint. The obtained result was further refined using the iterative closest point algorithm. We conducted several experimental tests that confirmed the enhanced efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method for multiple Kinect devices when compared to the conventional markerbased calibration. 展开更多

With the advancement in X-ray astronomical detection technology, various celestial polarization detection projects have been initiated. To meet the calibration requirements of polarimeters on the ground,a polarized X-ray radiation facility was designed for this study. The design was based on the principle that X-rays incident at 45°on a crystal produce polarized X-rays,and a second crystal was used to measure the polarization of the X-rays produced by the facility after rotation. The effects of different diaphragm sizes on the degree of polarization were compared, and the facility produced X-rays with polarization degrees of up to 99.55±0.96%using LiF200 and LiF220 crystals. This result revealed that the polarization of incident X-rays is one of the factors affecting the diffraction efficiency of crystals. The replacement of different crystals can satisfy the calibration requirements of polarized X-ray detectors with more energy points in the energy range(4-10)keV.In the future, the facility should be placed in a vacuum environment to meet the calibration requirements at lower energies. 展开更多
