Metallic lithium(Li)is considered the“Holy Grail”anode material for the nextgeneration of Li batteries with high energy density owing to the extraordinary theoretical specific capacity and the lowest negative electrochemical potential. However, owing to inhomogeneous Li-ion flux,Li anodes undergo uncontrollable Li deposition, leading to limited power output and practical applications.Carbon materials and their composites with controllable structures and properties have received extensive attention to guide the homogeneous growth of Li to achieve high-performance Li anodes. In this review, the correlation between the behavior of Li anode and the properties of carbon materials is proposed.Subsequently,we review emerging strategies for rationally designing high-performance Li anodes with carbon materials, including interface engineering(stabilizing solid electrolyte interphase layer and other functionalized interfacial layer)and architecture design of host carbon(constructing three-dimension structure, preparing hollow structure, introducing lithiophilic sites, optimizing geometric effects, and compositing with Li).Based on the insights, some prospects on critical challenges and possible future research directions in this field are concluded. It is anticipated that further innovative works on the fundamental chemistry and theoretical research of Li anodes are needed. 展开更多

Tin disulfide(SnS_(2)),due to large interlayer spacing and high theoretical capacity,is regarded as a prospective anode material for lithium-ion batteries.Nevertheless, the poor electron conductivity of SnS_(2) and huge volumetric change during the lithiation/delithiation process lead to a rapid capacity decay of the battery, hindering its commercialization. To address these issues,herein,SnS_(2) is in-situ grown on the surface of carbon nanotubes(CNT)and then encapsulated with a layer of porous amorphous carbon(CNT/SnS_(2)@C)by simple solvothermal and further carbonization treatment. The synergistic effect of CNT and porous carbon layer not only enhances the electrical co nductivity of SnS_(2) but also limits the huge volumetric change to avoid the pulverization and detachment of SnS_(2).Density functional theo ry calculations show that CNT/SnS_(2)@C has high Li^(+)adsorption and lithium storage capacity achieving high reaction kinetics.Consequently, cells with the CNT/SnS_(2)@C anode exhibit a high lithium storage capacity of 837mAh/g after 100 cycles at 0.1 A/g and retaining a capacity of 529.8 mAh/g under 1.0 A/g after 1000 cycles. This study provides a fundamental understanding of the electrochemical processes and beneficial guidance to design high-performance SnS_(2)-based anodes for LIBs. 展开更多

To achieve high energy density in lithium batteries, the construction of lithium-ion/metal hybrid anodes is a promising strategy. In particular, because of the anisotropy of graphite, hybrid anode formed by graphite/Li metal has low transport kinetics and is easy to causes the growth of lithium dendrites and accumulation of dead Li,which seriously affects the cycle life of batteries and even causes safety problems. Here,by comparing graphite with two types of hard carbon,it was found that hybrid anode formed by hard carbon and lithium metal, possessing more disordered mesoporous structure and lithophilic groups, presents better performance. Results indicate that the mesoporous structure provides abundant active site and storage space for dead lithium. With the synergistic effect of this structure and lithophilic functional groups(–COOH),the reversibility of hard carbon/lithium metal hybrid anode is maintained, promoting uniform deposition of lithium metal and alleviating formation of lithium dendrites. The hybrid anode maintains a 99.5%Coulombic efficiency(CE)after 260 cycles at a specific capacity of 500 m Ah/g.This work provides new insights into the hybrid anodes formed by carbon-based materials and lithium metal with high specific energy and fast charging ability. 展开更多

Carbon nitrides with two-dimensional layered structures and high theoretical capacities are attractive as anode materials for sodium-ion batteries while their low crystallinity and insufficient structural stability strongly restrict their practical applications.Coupling carbon nitrides with conductive carbon may relieve these issues. However, little is known about the influence of nitrogen(N)configurations on the interactions between carbon and C_(3)N_(4),which is fundamentally critical for guiding the precise design of advanced C_(3)N_(4)-related electrodes.Herein, highly crystalline C_(3)N_(4)(poly(triazine imide),PTI)based all-carbon composites were developed by molten salt strategy.More importantly, the vital role of pyrrolic-N for enhancing charge transfer and boosting Na+storage of C_(3)N_(4)-based composites, which was confirmed by both theoretical and experimental evidence, was spot-highlighted for the first time.By elaborately controlling the salt composition, the composite with high pyrrolic-N and minimized graphitic-N content was obtained.Profiting from the formation of highly crystalline PTI and electrochemically favorable pyrrolic-N configurations, the composite delivered an unusual reverse growth and record-level cycling stability even after 5000 cycles along with high reversible capacity and outstanding full-cell capacity retention. This work broadens the energy storage applications of C_(3)N_(4) and provides new prospects for the design of advanced all-carbon electrodes. 展开更多

Zincophilic property and high electrical conductivity are both very important parameters to design novel Zn anode for aqueous Zn-ion batteries(AZIBs).However, single material is difficult to exhibit zincophilic property and high electrical conductivity at the same time.Herein, originating from theoretical calculation,a zincophilic particle regulation strategy is proposed to address these limitations and carbon coated Na_(3)V_(2)(PO_(4))_(3)is taken as an example to be a protective layer on zinc metal(NVPC@Zn).Na_(3)V_(2)(PO_(4))_(3)(NVP)is a common cathode material for Zn-ion batteries, which is zincophilic.Carbon materials not only offer an electron pathway to help Zn deposition onto NVPC surface, but also enhance the zinc nucleophilicity of Na_(3)V_(2)(PO_(4))_(3).Hence,this hybrid coating layer can tune zinc deposition and resist side reactions such as hydrogen generation and Zn metal corrosion.Experimentally,a symmetrical battery with NVPC@Zn electrode displays highly reversible plating/stripping behavior with a long cycle lifespan over 1800 h at2 mA cm^(-2),much better than carbon and Na_(3)V_(2)(PO_(4))_(3)solely modified Zn electrodes. When the Na_(3)V_(2)(PO_(4))_(3)is replaced with zincophobic Al2O3or zincophilic V2O3,the stability of the modified zinc anodes is also prolonged. This strategy expands the option of zincophilic materials and provides a general and effective way to stabilize the Zn electrode. 展开更多

Cobalt sulphides attract much attention as anode materials for Li-ion batteries(LIBs).However, its poor conductivity, low initial column efficiency and large volume changes during cycling have hindered its further development.Herein, novel interlaced CoS nanosheets were firstly prepared on Carbon Fiber Cloth(CFC)by two hydrothermal reactions followed with carbon coating via carbonizing dopamine(CoS NS@C/CFC).As a freestanding anode, the nanosheet structure of CoS not only accommodates the volume variation, but also provides a large interface area to proceed the charge transfer reaction. In addition,CFC works as both a three-dimensional skeleton and an active substance which can further improve the areal capacity of the resulting electrode.Furthermore, the coated carbon combined with the CFC work as a 3D conductive network to facilitate the electron conduction. The obtained CoS NS@C/CFC,and the contrast sample prepared with the same procedure but without carbon coating(CoS NS/CFC),are characterized with XRD,SEM,TEM,XPS and electrochemical measurements. The results show that the CoS NS@C/CFC possesses much improved electrochemical performance due to the synergistic effect of nanosheet CoS,the coated carbon and the CFC substrate, exhibiting high initial columbic efficiency(~87%),high areal capacity(2.5 at 0.15 mA cm−2),excellent rate performance(1.6 at 2.73 mA cm−2)and improved cycle stability(87.5%capacity retention after 300 cycles). This work may provide a new route to explore freestanding anodes with high areal specific capacity for LIBs. 展开更多

Zn metal anodes are usually subject to grave dendrite growth during platting/stripping,which dramatically curtails the lifespan of aqueous Zn-ion batteries and capacitors. To address above problems,in our work,a novel phosphorus-functionalized multichannel carbon interlayer was designed and covered on Zn anodes. The results demonstrated that the multichannel structure combined with the three-dimensional meshy skeleton can provide more sufficient space for Zn deposition, thereby effectively inhibiting the growth of zinc dendrites.Meanwhile, theoretical calculations also confirmed that the P-C and P=O functional groups from phosphorus-functionalized multichannel carbon interlayer have the decisive influence in reducing the zinc nucleation potential and depositing uniformly zinc.Concretely, the symmetrical battery assembled with phosphorus-functionalized multichannel carbon interlayer-covered Zn anodes possessed a long lifetime of 3300 h at 2 mA cm^(-2)with 1 mAh cm^(-2).Furthermore,the full cell with activated carbon cathodes exhibited a high specific capacity of 80.5 mAh g^(-1)and outstanding cycling stability without capacity decay after 15000 cycles at a high current density of 5 A g^(-1).The superior electrochemical performance exceeded that of most reported papers.Consequently, our synthesized zincophilic interlayer with the unique structure has superior prospects for application in stabilizing zinc anodes and prolonging the lifespan of batteries. 展开更多

Electrode materials with high desalination capacity and long-term cyclic stability are the focus of capacitive deionization(CDI) community. Understanding the causes of performance decay in traditional carbons is crucial to design a high-performance material. Based on this, here, nitrogen-doped activated carbon(NAC) was prepared by pyrolyzing the blend of activated carbon powder(ACP) and melamine for the positive electrode of asymmetric CDI. By comparing the indicators changes such as conductivity, salt adsorption capacity, pH, and charge efficiency of the symmetrical ACP-ACP device to the asymmetric ACP-NAC device under different CDI cycles, as well as the changes of the electrochemical properties of anode and cathode materials after long-term operation, the reasons for the decline of the stability of the CDI performance were revealed. It was found that the carboxyl functional groups generated by the electro-oxidation of anode carbon materials make the anode zero-charge potential(E_(pzc)) shift positively, which results in the uneven distribution of potential windows of CDI units and affects the adsorption capacity. Furthermore, by understanding the electron density on C atoms surrounding the N atoms, we attribute the increased cyclic stability to the enhanced negativity of the charge of carbon atoms adjacent to quaternary-N and pyridinic-oxide-N. 展开更多

The commercialization of silicon-based anodes is affected by their low initial Coulombic efficiency(ICE)and capacity decay, which are attributed to the formation of an unstable solid electrolyte interface(SEI)layer.Herein,a feasible and cost-effective prelithiation method under a localized highconcentration electrolyte system(LHCE)for the silicon-silica/graphite(Si-SiO_(2)/C@G)anode is designed for stabilizing the SEI layer and enhancing the ICE.The thin SiO_(2)/C layers with-NH_(2) groups covered on nano-Si surfaces are demonstrated to be beneficial to the prelithiation process by density functional theory calculations and electrochemical performance. The SEI formed under LHCE is proven to be rich in ionic conductivity, inorganic substances, and flexible organic products. Thus, faster Li+transportation across the SEI further enhances the prelithiation effect and the rate performance of Si-SiO_(2)/C@G anodes.LHCE also leads to uniform decomposition and high stability of the SEI with abundant organic components. As a result, the prepared anode shows a high reversible specific capacity of 937.5 mAh g^(-1)after 400 cycles at a current density of 1 C.NCM 811‖Li-SSGLHCE full cell achieves a high-capacity retention of 126.15 mAh g^(-1)at 1 C over 750 cycles with 84.82%ICE,indicating the great value of this strategy for Si-based anodes in large-scale applications. 展开更多

A stacked Si/SiO_(x)/C composite anode material with carbon-coated structure was prepared by sol-gel method combined with carbothermal reduction using organic silicon. The results of X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, and elemental analysis show that the Si/SiO_(x)/C material is a secondary particle with a porous micronanostructure, and the presence of nanometer silicon does not affect the carbothermal reduction and carbon coating.Electrochemical test results indicate that the specific capacity and first coulombic efficiency of SiO_(x)/C composite with nanometer silicon can be increased to 1 946.05 mAh/g and 76.49%,respectively.The reversible specific capacity of Si/SiO_(x)/C material blended with graphite is 749.69 mAh/g after 100 cycles at a current density of 0.1 C,and the capacity retention rate is up to 89.03%.Therefore, the composite has excellent electrochemical cycle stability. 展开更多

Sodium metal batteries(SMBs)have attracted increasing attention over time due to their abundance of sodium resources and low cost. However, the widespread application of SMBs as a viable technology remains a great challenge, such as uneven metallic deposition and dendrite formation during cycling.Carbon skeletons as sodiophilic hosts can alleviate the dendrite formation during the plating/stripping.For the carbon skeleton, how to rationalize the design sodiophilic interfaces between the sodium metal and carbon species remains key to developing desirable Na anodes.Herein,we fabricated four kinds of structural features for carbon skeletons using conventional calcination and flash Joule heating. The roles of conductivity, defects, oxygen content, and the distribution of graphite for the deposition of metallic sodium were discussed in detail.Based on interface engineering, the J1600 electrode, which has abundant Na-C species on its surface, showed the highest sodiophilic. There are uniform and rich F-Na species distributed in the inner solid electrolyte interface layer. This study investigated the different Na-deposition behavior in carbon hosts with distinct graphitic arrangements to pave the way for designing and optimizing advanced electrode materials. 展开更多

Sodium-ion battery(SIB)is an ideal candidate for large-scale energy storage due to high abundant sodium sources, relatively high energy density, and potentially low costs.Hard carbons,as one of the most promising anodes, could deliver high plateau capacities at low potentials, which boosts the energy densities of SIBs.Their slope capacities have been demonstrated from the defect adsorption of sodium ions, while the plateau capacity depends highly on intercalation and pore filling.Nevertheless, the specific structures of sodium ions stored in hard carbons have not been clarified, namely active sites of adsorption, intercalation, and pore-filling mechanisms. Therefore, delicate synthesis methods are required to prepare hard carbons with controllable specific structures, along with elucidating the precise active sites for enhancing the Na-ion storage performance. To offer databases for future designs,we summarized the synthesis strategies of hard carbon anodes for constructing active sites of plateau capacities.Synthesis methods were highlighted with corresponding influences on the meticulous structures of hard carbons and Na-ion storage behaviors.Last but not least, perspectives were proposed for developing hard carbon anodes from the points of research and practical applications. 展开更多

At present, commercial Li-ion batteries are hardly to satisfy the growing demand for high energy density, for this purpose, lithium metal batteries have attracted worldwide attention in recent years. However, its practical applications are hindered by the formation of Li dendrites and volume effect during Li plating/stripping process, which leads to a lot of safety hazards.Herein,we first employed MOF-derived V_(2)O_(5) nanoparticles to decorate the carbon fiber cloth(CFC)backbone to acquire a lithiophilic 3D porous conductive framework(CFC@V_(2)O_(5)).Subsequently,the CFC@V_(2)O_(5) skeleton was permeated with molten Li to prepare CFC@V_(2)O_(5)@Li composite anode. The CFC@V_(2)O_(5)@Li composite anode can be stably cycled for more than 1650 h at high current density(5 mA·cm^(-2))and areal capacity(5 mA·h·cm^(–2)).The prepared full cell can initially maintain a high capacity of about 143 mA·h·g^(-1) even at a high current density of 5 C,and can still maintain 114 mA·h·g^(-1) after 1000 cycles. 展开更多

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have great potential to be the next major energy storage devices due to their obvious advantages and developing advanced electrodes and electrolytes is urgently necessary to promote its future industrialization. However, hard carbon as a state-of-the-art anode of SIBs still suffers from the low initial Coulomb efficiency and unsatisfactory rate capability, which could be improved by forming desirable solid electrolyte interphases (SEI) to some extent.Indeed, the chemistry and morphology of these interfacial layers are fundamental parameters affecting the overall battery operation, and optimizing the electrolyte to dictate the quality of SEI on hard carbon is a key strategy.Hence, this review summarizes the recent research on SEI design by electrolyte manipulation from solvents, salts, and additives. It also presents some potential mechanisms of SEI formation in various electrolyte systems.Besides, the current advanced characterization techniques for electrolyte and SEI structure analyses have been comprehensively discussed.Lastly, current challenges and future perspectives of SEI formation on hard carbon anode for SIBs are provided from the viewpoints of its compositions, evolution processes, structures, and characterization techniques, which will promote SEI efficient manipulation and improve the performance of hard carbon, and further contribute to the development of SIBs. 展开更多

The engineering of plant-based precursor for nitrogen doping has become one of the most promising strategies to enhance rate capability of hard carbon materials for sodium-ion batteries;however, the poor rate performance is mainly caused by lack of pyridine nitrogen, which often tends to escape because of high temperature in preparation process of hard carbon. In this paper,a high-rate kapok fiber-derived hard carbon is fabricated by cross-linking carboxyl group in 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid with the exposed hydroxyl group on alkalized kapok with assistance of zinc chloride.Specially,a high nitrogen doping content of 4.24%is achieved, most of which are pyridine nitrogen;this is crucial for improving the defect sites and electronic conductivity of hard carbon. The optimized carbon with feature of high nitrogen content, abundant functional groups, degree of disorder, and large layer spacing exhibits high capacity of 401.7 mAh g^(−1)at a current density of 0.05 A g^(−1),and more importantly, good rate performance, for example, even at the current density of 2 A g^(−1),a specific capacity of 159.5 mAh g^(−1)can be obtained. These findings make plant-based hard carbon a promising candidate for commercial application of sodium-ion batteries, achieving high-rate performance with the enhanced pre-cross-linking interaction between plant precursors and dopants to optimize aromatization process by auxiliary pyrolysis. 展开更多

For the performance optimization strategies of hard carbon, heteroatom doping is an effective way to enhance the intrinsic transfer properties of sodium ions and electrons for accelerating the reaction kinetics. However, the previous work focuses mainly on the intrinsic physicochemical property changes of the material, but little attention has been paid to the resulting interfacial regulation of the electrode surface, namely the formation of solid electrolyte interphase(SEI)film. In this work, element F,which has the highest electronegativity, was chosen as the doping source to,more effectively, tune the electronic structure of the hard carbon. The effect of F-doping on the physicochemical properties of hard carbon was not only systematically analyzed but also investigated with spectroscopy, optics, and in situ characterization techniques to further verify that appropriate F-doping plays a positive role in constructing a homogenous and inorganic-rich SEI film. The experimentally demonstrated link between the electronic structure of the electrode and the SEI film properties can reframe the doping optimization strategy as well as provide a new idea for the design of electrode materials with low reduction kinetics to the electrolyte. As a result, the optimized sample with the appropriate F-doping content exhibits the best electrochemical performance with high capacity(434.53 mA h g^(-1)at 20mA g^(-1))and excellent rate capability(141 mAh g^(-1)at 400 mA g^(-1)). 展开更多

Graphitized spent carbon cathode(SCC)is a hazardous solid waste generated in the aluminum electrolysis process. In this study,a flotation-acid leaching process is proposed for the purification of graphitized SCC,and the use of the purified SCC as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries is explored. The flotation and acid leaching processes were separately optimized through one-way experiments. The maximum SCC carbon content(93wt%)was achieved at a 90%proportion of−200-mesh flotation particle size,a slurry concentration of 10wt%,a rotation speed of 1600 r/min,and an inflatable capacity of 0.2 m^(3)/h(referred to as FSCC).In the subsequent acid leaching process, the SCC carbon content reached 99.58wt%at a leaching concentration of 5 mol/L,a leaching time of 100 min,a leaching temperature of 85°C,and an HCl/FSCC volume ratio of 5:1.The purified graphitized SCC(referred to as FSCC-CL)was utilized as an anode material, and it exhibited an initial capacity of 348.2 mAh/g at 0.1 C and a reversible capacity of 347.8 mAh/g after 100 cycles. Moreover, compared with commercial graphite,FSCC-CL exhibited better reversibility and cycle stability. Thus, purified SCC is an important candidate for anode material, and the flotation-acid leaching purification method is suitable for the resourceful recycling of SCC. 展开更多

To address the low conductivity and easy agglomeration of transition metal sulfide nanoparticles,FeCoS_(4) nanoparticles embedded in S-doped hollow carbon(FeCoS_(4)@S-HC)composites were successfully fabricated through a combination of hydrothermal processes and sulfidation treatment. The unique bowlshaped FeCoS_(4)/S-HC composites exhibit excellent structural stability with a high specific surface area of 303.7 m^(2)·g^(-1) and a pore volume of 0.93 cm^(3)·g^(-1).When applied as anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the FeCoS_(4)@S-HC anode exhibits efficient lithium storage with high reversible specific capacity(970.2 mA·h·g^(-1) at 100 mA·g^(-1))and enhanced cycling stability(574 mA·h·g^(-1) at 0.2 A·g^(-1) after 350 cycles,a capacity retention of 84%).The excellent lithium storage is attributed to the fact that the bimetallic FeCoS_(4) nanoparticles with abundant active sites can accelerate the electrochemical reaction kinetics, and the bowl-shaped S-HC structure can provide a stable mechanical structure to suppress volume expansion. 展开更多

Unsatisfactory conductivity and volume effects have hindered the commercial application of siliconbased materials as advanced anode materials for high-performance lithium-ion batteries. Herein, nitrogen doped carbon silicon matrix composite with atomically dispersed Co sites(Si/Co-N-C) is obtained via the design of the frame structure loaded with nano-components and the multi-element hybrid strategy. Co atoms are uniformly fixed to the N-C frame and tightly packed with nanoscale silicon particles as an activation and protection building block. The mechanism of the N-C framework of loaded metal Co in the Si alloying process is revealed by electrochemical kinetic analysis and ex situ characterization tests.Impressively, the nitrogen-doped Co site activates the intercalation of the outer carbon matrix to supplement the additional capacity. The Co nanoparticles with high conductivity and support enhance the conductivity and structural stability of the composite, accelerating the Li^(+)/Na^(+) diffusion kinetics. Density functional theory(DFT) calculation confirms that the hetero-structure Si/Co-N-C adjusts the electronic structure to obtain good lithium-ion adsorption energy, reduces the Li^(+)/Na^(+) migration energy barrier. This work provides meaningful guidance for the development of high-performance metal/non-metal modified anode materials. 展开更多
