Most patients present with intermediate or advanced disease that is not amenable to curative treatment, and the median survival in this group is 6-8 months (2). Several studies and well- designed randomized trials have shown a positive effect of transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) on patient outcome and survival (3-8). As nicely described in the present article from Wring et al., assessment of tumor response is of extreme importance in patients undergoing locoregional treatments of liver cancer (9). Early assessment of the effectiveness of TACE and monitoring of tumor response are paramount to the identification of treatment failure, guidance of future therapy, and determination of the interval for repeat treatment.展开更多

The mean density if DC (cells/mm2) in GC (15.0 was significantly higher than that in NGM (3.8) and GU (8.3), but was remarkably lower when compared to that in CAG (29.5) (P<0.01). Statistically significant difference in the population density of DC was observed between well- and poorly-differentiated GC (P<0.01). With their unique dendritic processes, DC were mainly concentrated within dense lymphoid infiltrates or in the T-area of reactive lymphoid follicles and were interspersed among the tumor cells. In contrast, Mφ were present around the necrotic foci and were rarely seen within the non-necrotic neoplastic tissues. These data suggest that DC, which differ in morphology, distribution, number and function form Mφ may be more directly involved in the host immune reaction against tumor by acting as antigen presenting cells.展开更多

Methods Reverse transcription coupled with two-step polymerase chain reaction (nested RT-PCR) was used to detect CK-20 mRNA expression in the peripheral blood from patients with blodder carcinomas. Results Detection of CK-20 mRNA expression was positive in 37 of 91 patients with bladder carcinoma (41 % ). Among 20 patients with distant metastasis, 17 were positive (85 % ). CK-20 mRNA was not detectable in the blood samples from 25 normal individuals. The frequency of positive CK-20 mRNA expression was signficantly higher in those with distant metastasis. Conclusion The presence of CK-20 mRNA expression in peripheral blood may be used as an early indicator of hematogenous metastasis of bladder carcinoma cells. 6 refs,1 tab.展开更多
