GROWING ties between China and African nations have led to a dramatic rise in the number of African students pursuing university degrees in China. But many of these students will never apply the skills they learned in Chinese classrooms in a Chinese workplace. Tebogo Lefifl, Executive Chairperson of Young African Professionals and Students (YAPS), maintains the YAPS network of over 1,500 young Africans living and studying in China, but says that the majority of these young people will not pursue careers in China, 展开更多

This study examined and analysed the impact of self-efficacy on the career decisions of 52 viola students enrolled in Chinese universities.According to the findings, the level of self-efficacy influences the learning and career decisions of students directly.Higher self-efficacy can positively affect how individuals perceive their past experiences and those of others. Therefore,a high degree of self-efficacy can be advantageous.Self-efficacy is primarily influenced by a person’s prior experiences, alternative experiences, verbal persuasion, and physical and emotional state during work-based learning.Schools may offer courses that foster and improve the development of self-efficacy in order to help viola majors in improving their self-efficacy effectively. 展开更多

AIM:To evaluate residents’perceptions and attitudes toward the various aspects of a comprehensive ophthalmic examination, and to determine if these factors correlate with their choices for fellowship and future career plans.METHODS:This is a cross-sectional study.A questionnaire on the perception of the ophthalmic exam was sent via SurveyMonkey to ophthalmology residents throughout Israel.Eighty of them(one-half of all ophthalmology residents in 2019)completed it.The first part related to how they perceived each component of the ophthalmic evaluation. The second part related to their future fellowship plans. The Chi-squared test was used to compare categorical variables and Student’s t-test and One-way ANOVA were used to compare continuous variables.Multivariate logistic regression analysis was applied as needed to detect interactions between variables and to exclude confounder effects.RESULTS:Slit-lamp examination of the anterior and posterior segments ranked as the most likeable aspects, whereas gonioscopy, ocular motility examination and visual acuity assessment were least likeable.Anterior segment and retina subspecialties were the ones most sought after.Forty-nine respondents(61.3%)noted a direct correlation between their preferred parts of comprehensive ophthalmic evaluations and their choice of subspecialty.Perceptions of selected components of those evaluations were significantly associated with responders’intentions to pursue anterior segment, retina,or oculoplastic fellowships(P<0.05).CONCLUSION:Perspectives of residents toward the ophthalmic examination, and most specifically its individual components, play an important role in their choice of subspecialty training. 展开更多

They have been widely reported by Chinese and International media. Lancet recently published a couple of articles, entitled "Ending violence against doctors in China"1 in May 2012 and "Appeal from Chinese doctors to end violence"2 in November 2013. In early 2014 the BBC produced two reports about violence against physicians in China, and the Times Weekly raised the question "Why China's Doctors Are Getting Beat Up?", illustrating that engaging in frontline medical care in China is becoming a nightmare and disclosed the increasing harsh medical environment in China.3 展开更多

The scarcity of doctors is common in underdeveloped countries as well as in some developing and developed countries including Japan, Germany, Australia, Korea, and even the United States of America, indicating that this scarcity has become a global issue. Causes vary from country to country. In China, the causes of this shortage are complicated. Due to increasing violence in recent years against medical staff that endangers the personal safety of medical practitioners, the number of Chinese medical school applicants has decreased greatly. Furthermore, the proportion of students who abandon the health sector is very high. 展开更多

An Overlapping-Generations Model of Firm Heterogeneity in Economic Development

We study overlapping-generations firm heterogeneity in economic development in an general equilibrium model in which manufacturing firms engage in oligopolistic competition. Individuals differ in their productivities in the manufacturing sector and choose to become entrepreneurs or workers. The model is surprisingly tractable. In the steady state, an increase in the entry barrier in the manufacturing sector or an increase in the percentage of income spent on the agricultural good decreases the wage rate, but the level of output in the manufacturing sector does not necessarily decrease. An increase in the degree of patience of an individual increases the steady state wage rate and the capital stock. Even with increasing returns in manufacturing and constant returns in agriculture, neither the wage rate nor the output level in the manufacturing sector may increase with population size. 展开更多
