The effect of potassium hydroxide (KOH) as a catalyst between the two feedstocks, raw and refined castor oil was compared. The transesterification technique was utilized in this study, aiming to investigate the effect of different parameters, which include the reaction temperature, methanol-to-oil mole ratio, and catalyst concentration at a constant period of 90 minutes. The result revealed the performance of the KOH catalyst on raw castor oil yielded 98.49% FAME, which was higher than the refined castor oil which yielded 97.9% FAME. The optimal conditions obtained from refined castor oil were applied to raw castor oil because of the same properties. The fuel quality of castor oil and produced biodiesel were tested for physicochemical properties.展开更多

The Soxhlet extraction method was employed to investigate the effect of temperature at atmospheric pressure. The focus of the study was to investigate a potential green solvent that can produce the high yields compared to the traditional solvent (hexane). The results show that at the average time of 3 hours and 30 minutes, the castor oil yield for green solvents were ranked as furfural (47.13%) > ethanol (45.37%) > p-cymene (39.15%) > d-limonene (39.13%) > α-pinene (38.11%). These castor oil yields were obtained at optimum temperatures for each green solvent. The castor oil yields were compared to the yield of hexane (31.36%) at same average time. The green solvents were recovered by using simple distillation, except furfural which was difficult to be recovered.展开更多

The apparent solubilities of PAHs are linearly proportional to the concentrations of SCOS microemulsion, and the enhancement extent by SCOS solutions is greater than that by ordinary surfactants on the basis of weight solubilization ratio(WSR). The log K em values of Naph, Phen, and Py are 3 13, 4 44 and 5 01 respectively, which are about the same as the log K ow values. At 5000 mg/L of SCOS conccentration, the apparent solubilities are 8 80, 121, and 674 times as the intrinsic solubilities for Naph, Phen, and Py. The effects of inorganic ions and temperature on the solubilization of solutes are also investigated. The solubilization is improved with a moderate addition of Ca 2+ , Na +, NH + 4 and the mixture of Na +, K +, Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ and NH + 4. WSR values are enhanced by 22 0% for Naph, 23 4% for Phen, and 24 6% for Py with temperature increasing by 5℃. The results indicated that SCOS microemulsions improve the performance of the surfactant enhanced remediation(SER) of soil, by increasing solubilities of organic pollutants and reducing the level of surfactant pollution and remediation expenses.展开更多

Castor oil acid, a raw material for producing SA, can be used to extract phenol from wastewater in order to reduce the amount of phenol used in the process and discharge of phenol. The results show that the extrac- tion mechanism is that hydroxyl group of phenol is linked to carboxyl group of castor oil acid by hydrogen bond. The extraction process approaches equilibrium in 30 min. Extraction ratio increases with the increase of sodium sulfate and castor oil acid, and decreases as phenol increases. When the oil-water ratio is 1 : 3, the optimal distribu- tion coefficient of 40 is obtained. Phenol saturation concentration in castor oil acid is 1.03 mol.L-1 after extraction for 4 times. The equilibrium constant (Kex) at 25℃ is 8.41 and the endothermic enthalpy (AH) is 1.513 kJ.mo1-1. The Gibbs free energy (AG) is -5.277 kJ. tool-1 and the value of AS is calculated to be 22.3 J. mo1-1. K-1.展开更多

One of the alternatives for cleaner production is the use of castor oil derivatives instead of non-renewable sources, such as adhesives based on PVA (polyvinyl acetate), applied in the manufacturing process of glued laminated bamboo. Based on the versatility of the bamboo laminate and the castor oil, and from the perspective of sustainability, this study aims to contribute to the application of new materials and processes, used in the manufacturing industry, by proposing the use of the polyurethane adhesive based on castor oil for glued laminated bamboo manufacturing, which can later be used in the manufacture of several products. To verify the applicability of the polyurethane adhesive based on castor oil in the glued laminated bamboo manufacture, mechanical tests of traction and shearing of the glue sheet were performed in specimens of the said material, and the results were compared with the Cascorez 2590 and Waterbond adhesives. The results showed that the polyurethane adhesive based on castor oil, in the traction test, has superior performance than the Waterbond adhesive and slightly below than the Cascorez 2590 adhesive, but in the shear test, the polyurethane adhesive based on castor oil presented a slightly inferior performance than the other two adhesives used in the comparison.展开更多

The results indicated that fatty acid profiles of edible oils could be used to classify the 5 kinds of oils. Meanwhile, simulated data test indicated that fatty acid profiles could be used to detect adultera-ted by 5% . Finally, a RF model was built to detect adulteration of edible oils with castor oils by fatty acid composition. The results from cross validation indicated that the oils adulterated by castor oil at low levels (5% 7V/V) could be completely separated from 4 kinds of edible oils. Therefore this model could be used to detect adulteration of 4 kinds of edible oil with castor oils.展开更多

At our hospital, specialized mainly in renal, hepatic, and diabetic diseases, we have been performing colon capsule endoscopy since December 2014. Dialysis patients are potentially susceptible to bleeding because of the fragile intestine, impaired platelet function, or oral administration of nonsteroidalanti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or anticoagulants. For this reason, detailed examination by capsule endoscopy appears to be useful. However, the capsule excretion rate after recommended bowel preparation reportedly ranges from 70% to 90%, and administration of boosters is also necessary. For dialysis patients, liquid loading is a problem. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of bowel preparation with castor oil for improving the capsule excretion rate. In all 20 patients (including four dialysis patients), both capsule transit time and duration of capsule endoscopy were shortened. The results are presented and briefly discussed in this report.展开更多

The results show that the ABCP is a semicompatible system and the compatibility of the two components decreases with increasing content of the hard segment. The mechanical and damping properties of the ABCP are obviously superior to that of their homopolymers. The damping value is mainly controlled by cross[ink density of the ABCP but the T-g value by component.展开更多

Castor oil, phenolic resin were taken in the molar ratio 0.07:0.027 and diethylene glycol (DEG) was also taken in varying hydroxyl numbers to achieve chemical modification in the backbone of synthesized polyol. Physico-chemical properties like acid value, OH value and moisture content of the modified polyol were measured. The prepared phenolic resin blended polyol were reacted with 4, 4-methylene diisocyanate and 2, 4-toluene diisocyanate to formulate the two component polyurethane (PU) coatings. Prepared coating is used to study properties such as gel time, surface dry, tack free and hard surface drying times. It was found that phenolic resin and diethyleneglycol used in synthesizing castor oil based modified polyols show the significant changes in physico-chemical properties of synthesized polyols. The variation in physico-chemical properties of synthesized polyol provide the information for desirable curing of polyurethane systems.展开更多

MAE was performed using 5% ethanol in hexane as solvent at different extraction times, power intensities and solvent-to-feed(S/F, ml of solvent to gram of feed) ratios. The process parameters were optimized by statistical approach using historical data design of response surface method(RSM). The oils were characterized for yield, physicochemical properties, dielectric properties and oxidation stability, and comparison was also made with oil extracted using Soxhlet method. Results show that the maximum oil yield of 37% was obtained at 20 min with microwave power intensity of 330 W and S/F ratio of 20. The main fatty acid composition of castor oil is ricinoleic acid. The density, refractive index, dielectric properties and oxidation stability of oils are not affected by the extraction methods and extraction parameters of MAE. However, the MAE-extracted oil is more viscous compared to that by Soxhlet method. With extra caution on oil oxidation, MAE could be a promising solvent extraction method with an 86% less in processing time and a higher yield.展开更多

The green solvents were recovered by using simple distillation, except furfural which was difficult to be recovered.

文摘Wastewater containing high concentrations of phenol and sodium sulfate is generated in sebacic acid (SA) industry. The Gibbs free energy (AG) is -5.277 kJ. tool-1 and the value of AS is calculated to be 22.3 J. mo1-1. K-1.
文摘Castor oil-based cationic waterborne polyurethane(CWPU)was synthesized by pre-polymer process using castor oil(CO),poly(adipic acid-1,4-succinate diol)(PBA),isophorone diisocyanate(IPDI),and N-methyldiethanolamine(MDEA).The influences of the content of CO and MDEA on comprehensive performance and finished fabric properties of cationic waterborne polyurethane was investigated, especially the antibacterial properties of finished fabric. The CWPU latex particle size and its distribution decrease as the content of CO increased from 0wt%to 16.8wt%,and increases afterwards. The CWPU films show much higher thermal stability than cationic waterborne polyurethane without CO.The surface of fabrics was characterized by scanning electron microscope(SEM).The finished fabric surface is much smoother. In addition, the finished fabric with CWPU emulsion has better antibacterial property against E.coli and S.aureus.When MDEA content is 8%,the antibacterial rates of the two kinds of bacteria are 77.3%and 82.2%,respectively.

文摘Nowadays, waterborne polyurethanes(WPUs)prepared from renewable resources has attracted more and more attention. However, due to its structure, the prepared films easily swells in water and greatly affects the application range of WPUs.Therefore, solving the problem of water resistance is a way to improve the application range of WPUs.In this study,a series of WPU dispersions were prepared using castor oil as the bio-based polyol.Besides, the thiol-ene photo click reaction was carried out on the WPU films for silane modification. The effect of the silane modification on the chemical structures of the WPU dispersions and the properties of the WPU films was investigated and discussed. The results revealed that the WPU dispersions had a smaller particle size and potential, showing excellent stability. In addition, the modified WPU films showed highly water resistance which 72 h water absorption could be reduced to 1.94%and the contact angle was up to 99.34?.Moreover,the modified WPU films also exhibited excellent solvent resistance(in acid and salt solution)and thermal stability. This study can provide a new way to improve the water-resistance,hydrophobicity,and thermal stability of bio-based waterborne polyurethane for potential application in painting, adhesives and inks.
文摘The current concern with the environment promotes the development of new technologies for production with use of alternative materials, from renewable resources, and changes in production processes, having as main objective the reduction of environmental impact. The results showed that the polyurethane adhesive based on castor oil, in the traction test, has superior performance than the Waterbond adhesive and slightly below than the Cascorez 2590 adhesive, but in the shear test, the polyurethane adhesive based on castor oil presented a slightly inferior performance than the other two adhesives used in the comparison.

文摘Developing a method of adulteration detection is critical for protecting customers" rights which is a particular concern in food quality. In this study, fatty acid profiles of castor oils were estab-lished by GC and employed to classify 4 types of edible oils and castor oil with multivariate statistical methods. Therefore this model could be used to detect adulteration of 4 kinds of edible oil with castor oils.
文摘Colon capsule endoscopy was approved for reimbursement under the national health insurance system of Japan in 2014. The results are presented and briefly discussed in this report.

文摘Castor oil polyurethane/poly(methyl methacrylate) AB crosslinked polymers (ABCP) were synthesized by free radical copolymerization of MMA and vinyl-terminated castor oil polyurethane which was obtained from isocyanate-terminated castor oil polyurethane and hydroxyethyl methacrylate The mechanical properties, transition and relaxation, as well as compatibility and morphology of the ABCP were investigated by changing the component. The results show that the ABCP is a semicompatible system and the compatibility of the two components decreases with increasing content of the hard segment. The mechanical and damping properties of the ABCP are obviously superior to that of their homopolymers. The damping value is mainly controlled by cross[ink density of the ABCP but the T-g value by component.
文摘In this study, three sorts of polyols were successfully synthesized from castor oil using a Dean-Stark quick,eco-friendly and high-efficiency method. For this purpose, castor oil was epoxidized in the presence of two types of catalysts includingγ-alumina and formic acid, named as ECOAl and ECOF,respectively.Epoxidized castor oils were then characterized by use of hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance(H-NMR)and oxirane oxygen content analysis. The relative percentages of conversion double bond to oxirane were obtained 96% and 74% for ECOAl and ECOF,respectively.Ring opening reaction of ECOAl was performed by two types of saponified castor oil as well as castor oil in a system equipped with Dean–Stark apparatus. The synthesized polyols were characterized by attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(ATR-FTIR),gel permeation chromatography(GPC),differential scanning calorimetry(DSC),viscometer and OH number evaluation. The material obtained in this research is a candidate to be intended in synthesis of polyurethane for coating applications.
文摘Castor oil is used to synthesize phenolic resin modified polyol. The variation in physico-chemical properties of synthesized polyol provide the information for desirable curing of polyurethane systems.
文摘BACKGROUND Preparation for colon capsule endoscopy(CCE)requires a large liquid laxative volume for capsule excretion, which compromises the procedure's tolerability.AIM To assess the safety and utility of castor oil-boosted bowel preparation.METHODS This prospective cohort study including 20 patients(age range,16-80 years;six men and 14 women)suspected of having colorectal disease was conducted at Kindai University Hospital from September 2017 to August 2019.All patients underwent CCE because of the following inclusion criteria:previous incomplete colonoscopy in other facility(n=20),history of abdominal surgery(n=7),or organ abnormalities such as multiple diverticulum(n=4)and adhesion after surgery(n=6).The exclusion criteria were as follows:Dysphagia, history of allergic reactions to the drugs used in this study(magnesium citrate, polyethylene glycol, metoclopramide, and castor oil),possibility of pregnancy, possibility of bowel obstruction or stenosis based on symptoms,or scheduled magnetic resonance imaging within 2 wk after CCE.The primary outcome was the capsule excretion rate within the battery life,as evaluated by the total large bowel observation rate, large bowel transit time, and bowel creasing level using a fivegrade scale in different colorectal segments. The secondary outcomes were complications, colorectal lesion detection rates, and patients’tolerability.RESULTS The castor oil-based regimen was implemented in 17 patients.Three patients cancelled CCE because they could tolerate castor oil,but not liquid laxatives. The capsule excretion rate within the battery life was 88%(15/17).The mean large bowel transit time was 236 min.Approximately 70%of patients had satisfactory colon cleansing levels.CCE detected colon polyps(14/17,82%)and colonic diverticulum(4/12,33%).The sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic accuracy rates for detecting colorectal polyps(size≥6 mm)were 76.9%,75.0%,and 76.4%,respectively.The sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic accuracy rates for detection of diverticulum were 100%each.Twelve patients(71%)rated CCE as more than“good”,confirming the new regimen’s tolerability. No serious adverse events occurred during this study.CONCLUSION The castor oil-based regimen could reduce bowel preparation dose and improve CCE tolerability.
文摘BACKGROUND Incomplete excretion rates are problematic for colon capsule endoscopy(CCE).Widely available booster regimens are suboptimal.Recently published data on one day preparation CCE protocol using castor oil appeared effective.AIM To assess the impact of adding castor oil to a standard split-dose(2-d)preparation in an unselected Western patient cohort.METHODS All patients aged 18 or more referred to our unit for a CCE over a 5-mo period were prospectively recruited.Controls were retrospectively identified from our CCE database. All patients received split bowel preparation with Moviprep■[polyethylene glycol(PEG)-3350,sodium sulphate, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium ascorbate and ascorbic acid for oral solution;Norgine B.V,United States],a PEG-based solution used predominantly in our colonoscopy practice.Control booster regimen included Moviprep■with 750 mL of water(booster 1)on reaching the small bowel.A further dose of Moviprep■with 250 mL of water was given 3 h later and a bisacodyl suppository(Dulcolax■)10 mg after 8 h,if the capsule was not excreted. In addition to our standard booster regimen, cases received an additional 15 mL of castor oil given at the time of booster 1.A nested case control design with 2:1 ratio(control:case)was employed.Basic demographics, completion rates, image quality, colonic transit time, diagnostic yield and polyp detection were compared between groups, using a student t or chi-square tests as appropriate.RESULTS One hundred and eighty-six CCEs[mean age 60 years(18-97),56%females,n=104],including 62 cases have been analysed.Indication breakdown included 96 polyp surveillance(51.6%),42 lower gastrointestinal symptoms(22.6%),28 due to incomplete colonoscopy(15%),18 anaemia(9.7%)and 2 inflammatory bowel disease surveillance(1.1%).Overall,CCE completion was 77%(144/186),image quality was adequate/diagnostic in 91%(170/186),mean colonic transit time was 3.5 h(0.25-13),and the polyp detection rate was 57%(106/186).Completion rates were significantly higher with castor oil,87%cases(54/62)vs 73%controls(90/124),P=0.01.The number needed to treat with castor oil to result in an additional complete CCE study was 7,absolute risk reduction=14.52%,95%confidence interval(CI):3.06-25.97.This effect of castor oil on excretion rates was more significant in the over 60 s,P<0.03,and in females,P<0.025.Similarly,polyp detection rates were higher in cases 82%(51/62)vs controls 44%(55/124),P=0.0001,odds ratio 5.8,95%CI:2.77-12.21.Colonic transit times were similar,3.2 h and 3.8 h,respectively.Image quality was similar, reported as adequate/diagnostic in 90%(56/62)vs 92%(114/124).CONCLUSION In our capsule endoscopy centre, castor oil addition as a CCE booster significantly improved completion rates and polyp detection in an unselected Western cohort.

文摘This study was aimed at evaluating the physicochemical properties and oxidation stability of castor oil using microwave-assisted solvent extraction(MAE). With extra caution on oil oxidation, MAE could be a promising solvent extraction method with an 86% less in processing time and a higher yield.
文摘This paper reports on the assessment of the quality and quantity of castor oil from castor seeds collected from different regions in Tanzania. The castor seeds from Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, Iringa, Kagera and Morogoro regions in Tanzania were extracted by Soxhlet method using n-hexane and the oil yields were determined. The yields were 52.78%, 49.95%, 47.89%, 44.23%, 43.71% and 43.69% for Dodoma, Arusha, Iringa, Morogoro, Kagera and Dar es Salaam respectively. The physico-chemical parameters that were determined were refractive index (1.468 - 1.473), pH 5.7- 6.3, viscosity (0.943 - 0.954), specific gravity (165.50 - 187.46 mg KOH/g Oil), saponification value (76.68 - 80 mg KOH/g Oil), iodine value (76.68 - 80.12 g I2/100 g Oil), acid value (0.44 - 1.97 mg NaOH/g Oil), free fatty acid (0.22 - 0.99) and peroxide value (10.79 - 13.73). Fatty acid profile of castor oil was analysed using Shimadzu GCMS and ricinoleic acid ranged from 83.5% to 92.3% of the total fatty acids in the castor oils.

文摘Over the last decade, the oriented strand board(OSB)market presented meaningful growth. However,as a woodbased product, because of its anatomical structure and chemical composition,OSB can be damaged by biodeterioration agents.Given that, the biodeterioration of OSB panels must be investigated to improve its durability. In this way, this work analyses the biological resistance against termites(Cryptotermes brevis and Nasutitermes corniger)of heat-treated OSB panels made with Eucalyptus wood glued with vegetable-based polyurethane-an ecofriendly and sustainable adhesive derived from castor oil.Various panels were produced with different layers compositions(face:core:face of 25:50:25 and 30:40:30)in wood mass proportion and were submitted to postproduction heat treatment(at 175℃ and 200℃)replacing the use of chemical insecticides. The influence of the layers variation and heat treatment temperature were evaluated, and these results were compared with commercial panels(made from pinus wood with insecticide). The results showed that the heat treatment did not improve the resistance against termite attack. However, all the experimental panels presented a satisfactory performance that was compatible with the commercial panels produced with insecticide available in the Brazilian market. The combination of Eucalyptus wood and castor oil adhesive to produce OSB,in any variation of layer composition, demonstrated natural resistance against termite attack compatible with the commercial panels, even without using chemical additives to increase durability.
