To investigate the effect of tip clearance size on cavitation characteristics in a turbopump inducer,a series of experiments have been conducted in a newly developed visualization test facility using room temperature water as working fluid. The pressure fluctuations near the tip region were collected, and the cavity structures under various conditions were documented by a high-speed camera. It is found that large tip clearance distinctly reduces both the non-cavitation and cavitation performance.Three cavitation instabilities,super-synchronous rotating cavitation, synchronous rotating cavitation and cavitation surge have been carefully identified through combination of cross-correlation analysis of pressure signals and visualization results.Large tip clearance displays a remarkable stabilization effect on pressure fluctuation, cavitation surge totally disappears, and the range of occurrence of synchronous rotating cavitation becomes smaller for the large tip clearance, whereas super-synchronous rotating cavitation only occurs in the large tip clearance. The cavitation areas are smaller at large tip clearance, while the flow channels are more seriously choked when cavitation occurs heavily in comparison with those at small tip clearance, which may be responsible for the worse cavitation performance. 展开更多

The article illustrates the application of Bayesian estimation to the identification of flow instabilities, with special reference to rotating cavitation,in a three-bladed axial inducer using the unsteady pressure readings of a single transducer mounted on the casing just behind the leading edges of the impeller blades. The typical trapezoidal pressure distribution in the blade channels is parametrized and modulated in time and space for theoretically reproducing the expected pressure generated by known forms of cavitation instabilities(cavitation auto-oscillations and higher-order surge cavitation modes,n-lobed subsynchronous/synchronous/super-synchronous rotating cavitation). The Fourier spectra of the theoretical pressure so obtained in the rotating frame are transformed in the stationary frame, frequency broadened to better approximate the experimental results, and parametrically fitted by maximum likelihood estimation to the measured auto-correlation spectra. Each form of instability generates a characteristic distribution of sidebands in addition to its fundamental frequency. The identification makes use of this information for effective detection and characterization of multiple simultaneous flow instabilities with intensities spanning over about 20 db down to about 4 db signal-to-noise ratios. The same information also allows for effectively bypassing the aliasing limitations of traditional cross-correlation methods in the discrimination of multiple-lobed azimuthal instabilities from the measurements returned by arrays of equally spaced sensors. The method returns both the estimates of the model parameters and their standard deviations, providing the information needed for the assessment of the statistical significance of the results. The proposed approach represents therefore a promising tool for experimental research on flow instabilities in high-performance turbopumps. 展开更多

The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of water temperature on cavitation characteristics in a turbopump inducer,a series of experiments at different temperatures have been conducted in a newly developed visualization test facility. It is found that higher temperature shows little influence on the non-cavitation performance and breakdown characteristic in the investigated range. The relationship between cavitation development and pressure fluctuation has been discussed in detail.Higher temperature displays a remarkable stabilization effect on the cavitation excited pressure. In particular, the inception cavitation numbers of both the super-synchronous rotating cavitation and synchronous rotating cavitation are decreased at higher temperatures, and the corresponding frequencies are not affected, while the amplitudes are distinctly reduced, and the occurrence range of synchronous rotating cavitation is significantly narrowed.A generalized RayleighPlesset equation has been employed to account for the thermal effect on the bubble development, which may provide a deep insight in understanding the experimental results.Thermal effect is found to act as a remarkable dissipation mechanism to suppress the bubble growth, smooth the collapse. In particular, the excited pressure during collapse is smaller at higher temperatures, which may lead to the stabilization effect of high temperature in this study. 展开更多

The objective of this paper is to investigate the compressible turbulent cavitating flows with special emphasis on shock wave dynamics, with the water/vapor compressibility taken into account. The simulations are performed by solving the compressible, multiphase unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with Saito cavitation model and SST-SAS turbulence model. The compressibility of both the pure water and vapor is considered by employment of the Tait equation of state for water and ideal gas equation of state for vapor. Results are presented for a 3-D NACA66 hydrofoil fixed at ?= 6? and ?= 1.25 in partial cavitating flows. Cavity collapse induced shock wave formation and propagation, which is closely related to the compressibility characteristics of cavitating flows, are well predicted. Good performance has been obtained for both the cavity evolution process and cavitation induced pressure signals, especially the cavity collapse induced shock wave emission and its interaction with the attached cavity sheet. The pressure peaks in microseconds accompanying the shock wave are captured. The typical quasi-periodic sheet/cloud cavitation evolution is characterized by the following four stages:(1) the growth of the attached cavity sheet,(2) development of re-entrant flow and attached cavity sheet breakup,(3) attached cavity sheet rolling up and cavity cloud shedding, and(4) cloud cavity collapse, shock wave emission and propagation. The cloud cavity collapse induced shock wave dynamics is supposed to be the major origin of cavitation instabilities. 展开更多
