Byatt depicts the true situation of women in her"Frederica Quartet". The quartet involves some feminist issues such as marriage and celibacy, female power and women's alienation. In the quartet, Byatt associates the mythical virgin images to the women figures in real life, and contemplates possible ways for women to survive and keep female power in a male-dominated society. It makes a detailed analysis on the recurring virgin images and the characterization of female characters in the quartet, aiming to analyze the theme of Byatt's quartet and reveal her feminist concerns. 展开更多

This essay reflects on the reception of Lu Xun's short story "The Loner" (Gudu zhe, alternately translated as "The Lone Wolf, The Misanthrope," and "The Isolate") in American classrooms, where students have sometimes wondered whether that character might be read as "queer." It suggests that the title character's unusual and self-imposed celibacy is probably best explained by his belief, in a very general sense, in the foundational values of zoology as practiced in Japan and China in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and thus that the story may be a better gateway to understanding the ways in which Lu Xun envisioned the mixed impact of new political economies on private life than a source text for queer studies. At the same time, however, this essay emphasizes that in "The Loner," as elsewhere, accounting for the "heterosexual imperative" of early zoology (e.g., with its emphases on animal husbandry, propagation, reproduction) can have meaningful consequences for "queering" interpretations of received texts from literature, history of science, and beyond. 展开更多

As a result of this, the penis appears shortened in length. It was first described by Keyes Jr. E.L. in 1919. It can be associated with voiding problem and in adults, sexual issues, among others. Objective: To show that surgery can reverse celibacy induced by CP and highlight the need for an interdisciplinary approach to correction of this anomaly. Patient and Method: A thirty-one-year male patient who had a surgical release of his buried penis by two surgeons in 2019 in a private hospital. The case note was reviewed, the data obtained analyzed and the results including photographs, were presented. The patient was followed up. Result: A 10 cm length of penis and a hundred percent (100%) take of sheet of split skin graft used to resurface the denuded penis were achieved using combined spinal and epidural anesthesia. The patient, his mother and the surgeons were satisfied with the outcome. Consequently, he resolved to marry a wife after all. Conclusion: Concealed penis can now be regarded as a known cause of celibacy and surgical correction can reverse the celibate state. 展开更多

This paper describes and analyzes Martin Luther's views on marriage and family primarily from his own writings. Luther elevated marriage and family life to a place of respect and honor in the church and society at a time when singleness and celibacy were celebrated as ways of reaching a higher state of spirituality. Martin Luther's teachings were so radically different from the traditional Catholic views of his days that the church became furious with him and tried almost everything in their power to silence him. Although Luther is known primarily for his views on Justification, but it is his teachings on marriage and family that has been more consequential. Many in the West who have never heard the name of Martin Luther, today enjoy a more biblical view on marriage and family because of his influence. He advocated divorce according to biblical principles, at a time when divorce was almost impossible; he encouraged priests to marry by showing that there was no conflict between their calling and marriage; he denounced celibacy, blaming it for encouraging lust rather than aiding chastity; he restored marriage and family life back to the arena of spirituality and respectability in society. Luther lived out his own advice by getting married and living an exemplary married life. What made Luther so effective was the passionate intensity with which he advocated these reforms. He wrote and spoke with such power and backed up his words with such a bold and courageous life, although living in the shadow of constant threats, that centuries after his death, the power and conviction of his ideas still resonate. 展开更多

This study aims at illuminating the institution and customs of marriage in the pre-lslamic period (Al-]ahiliyya), and at the same time at putting to rest certain completely unfounded, fabricated and slanderous claims about this period which have been disseminated by a not inconsiderable number of scholars. It will present the facts about marriage in the period in question by way of showing how it appears in pre-lslamic literature, prose as well as poetry, and how the social and humane relations between husband and wife reflected in the pre-islamic poetry and prose. 展开更多
