Canonical Characteristic Relation for Two Dimensional Euler Equations

We propose a new way of rewriting the two dimensional Euler equations and derive an original canonical characteristic relation based on the characteristic theory of hyperbolic systems. This relation contains the derivatives strictly along the bicharacteristic directions, and can be viewed as the 2D extension of the characteristic relation in 1D case.

ULTRASTRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF NEPHROBLASTOMAS AND THEIR RELATION TO DNA PLOID

Fifty-one cases of nephroblastoma were pathologically studied by light and electron microscopy as well as microspectrophotometry. Under light and electron microscope, the tumor appeared to be carcinosarcoma structurally, consisting of epithelial, sarcomatous and undlfferentiated tumor cells. Their ultrastructural feature was similar to that of renal tubular epithelial cells and tibroblast. It could differentially be diagnosed from renal metoblastic tumors by electron microscopy when the tumor was mainly composed of sarcomatous cells. Microspectrophotometer measurement showed an Increased mean nuclear DNA content (DI>1. 04), belonging to aneuplold tumor, which together with polyploid cells, serving as one of the Important characteristics of malignant tumors. In addition, the poorer the tumor differentiation the higher was the DNA content of the tumor cells, suggesting that the measurement of nuclear DNA of tumor cells might also serve as one of signs to acertain the degree of differentiation and malignant of nephroblastomas with more preciseneas than general morphological examinations.

The Characteristics of 30-60 Day Oscillation and Its Relations to the Interannual Oscillations

The characteristics of 30-60 day oscillation (hereafter called LFO ) of the outgoing longwave radiation data (OLR) and its relations to the interannual oscillations of the sea surface temperature (SST) are investigated by using the daily OLR data for the period from January, 1979 to December, 1987 and the corresponding monthly SST data. It is found that the LFO the band the interannual oscillations of the SST monthly anomaly (SSTA) interact each other and they all relate to the occurrence and development of El Nino events closely. Before El Nino event happens, it contributes to the SST's wanning up and to the SST's quasi-biennial oscillation (called QBO for brevity) and three and half years oscillation (called SO for short) being in warm water phase in the equatorial central and eastern Pacific (ECP and EEP) that the LFO in the equatorial western Pacific (EWP) enhances and propagates eastward; When El Nino event takes place, the LFO, SSTA and SSTA's QBO and SO in the EEP interact and strengthen each other; But the warmer SST and the SSTA's QBO and SO in the warm water phase in the EEP contribute to the LFO's weakening in the equatorial Pacific. Moreover, these contribute to the SST in the EEP becoming cold and the SSTA's QBO and SO in the EWP being in cold water phase and then impel the El Nino event to end.

NONLINEAR VIBRATION OF CIRCULAR SANDWICH PLATE UNDER THE UNIFORMED LOAD

The differential equations of the axisymmetric large amplitude free vibration for circular sandwich plates under static load are derived, and a set of nonlinearly coupled algebraic and differential eigenvalue equations of the problem are formulated following an assumed time mode approach suggested. The analytic solutions are presented and a relation for amplitude frequency-load of the plates with edge clamped is derived by modified iteration method. The effects of static load on vibrations of plates are investigated.

The nonlinear vibration fundamental equation of circular sandwich plate under uniformed load and circumjacent load and the loosely clamped boundary condi- tion were established by von Karman plate theory, and then accordingly exact solution of static load and its numerical results were given. Based on time mode hypothesis and the variational method, the control equation of the space mode was derived, and then the amplitude frequency-load character relation of circular sandwich plate was obtained by the modified iteration method. Consequently the rule of the effect of the two kinds of load on the vibration character of the circular sandwich plate was investigated. When circumjacent load makes the lowest natural frequency zero, critical load is obtained.

EVALUATION OF TROPICAL CYCLONE GENESIS PRECURSORS WITH REI ATIVE OPER ATING CHARACTERISTICS(ROC)IN HIGH-RESOLUTION ENSEMBLE FORECASTS:HURRICANE ERNESTO

Identifying the environmental conditions that control tropical cyclone(TC)genesis is a challenging problem.This study examines a new method to evaluate the precursors of TC genesis using high-resolution ensemble forecasts and relative operating characteristic(ROC)diagrams.With an advanced research version of the Weather Research and Forecasting(WRF)model,high-resolution ensemble forecasts(at 5 km horizontal resolution)are conducted in various configurations using a bred vector method to form a set of 140 ensemble members for predicting Hurricane Ernesto’s genesis.Basic evaluation shows that high-resolution ensemble forecasts are able to predict well-developed TCs,whereas the NCEP Global Ensemble Forecast System(GEFS)fails to do so.This set of 140 ensemble members is employed to study the precursors of Hurricane Ernesto’s genesis by contrasting the genesis and nongenesis cases.Specifically,ROC curves,composite figures for genesis and nongenesis cases,and Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests are applied to characterize the relationship between important environmental parameters near the beginning of the simulation and genesis likelihood 15-18 h later.It is found that moist conditions at 850 hPa,vertical wind shear,the strength of the 850 hPa pre existing wave,and upper-level warming play notable roles in Ernesto’s genesis.
