From 20 pair-matched schizophrenia patients, 10 were assigned to a day-care/SST group and 10 to a control group undergoing usual treatment. After 6 months, sending and receiving skills were assessed by means of role-playing tests, psychiatric symptoms, social function, and cognitive function. The day-care/SST group showed a significant improvement and a large effect size in sending skills. Receiving skills also improved, showing a medium effect size, but the difference from the control group was not statistically significant. No statistically significant changes were observed in the other measures. That no changes occurred in social function, psychiatric symptoms, or cognitive function leads to two conclusions: 1) cognition targeted, specialized training and comprehension of cognitive remediation, psychiatric rehabilitation, and social skill development are necessary for improvement in other domains, especially symptoms and social functions;and 2) improvement resulting from day-care in psychiatry and SST alone is limited. In addition, further investigations over a longer observation period and a greater sample size are needed.展开更多

Children and adolescents with history of CSA could have higher cortisol levels, as these have been associated with deleterious changes in brain regions involved in controlling social behavior and self-control. The aim of the present study was to determine the relationship among basal cortisol levels, social skills and behavioral problems in adolescents with CSA by evaluating two groups: one consisting of 12 - 15-year-old girls with CSA (n = 23), the other healthy comparison adolescents with no history of child abuse (n = 23). Social skills and behavioral problems were assessed using the Social Skills Improvement System. Three saliva samples were collected from each participant. The girls with CSA had lower social skills and more behavioral problems, as well as, higher cortisol concentrations. Besides, these participants showed significant negative correlations among cortisol levels and social skills, as well as, positive correlations with behavioral problems scales. It is feasible to suggest that the social deficiencies observed in these participants with CSA are related to alterations of the HPA.展开更多

In addition, in the international scientific bibliography, it is stated that children with Intellectual Disability (ID) can integrate socially at school. However, the social benefits of inclusive education cannot always be reached. Studies have shown that just putting students with ID in a common school is not always adequate, as their social abilities are insufficient and because of that interventions are required. In this paper, we will examine school inclusion of students with ID having in mind that it is connected firstly to the modification of educational techniques using a Targeted, Individual, Structured, Integrated Program for Students with Special Educational Needs (TISIPfSENs). We will focus to the enhancement of their social skills facing school as one of their educational areas inside the community. The results showed that educational interventions that are focused on the enforcement of social skills are a basic priority for the inclusion of students with ID inside the school community.展开更多

Obese individuals, especially teenagers, have deficits in several social skills, which lead to damage to the relationships, self-esteem and in their valuation by social agents. This study examines how the literature of the last decade associates the components of social competence to obesity in adolescents. The research was carried out in electronic databases in the period between Jan. 2005 and Dec. 2015, resulting in 329 articles. 303 were excluded as they did not meet the inclusion criteria, and 26 original articles have been analyzed. The results showed that the components of social competence were negatively associated with obesity and most studies focused on self-esteem, pattern of interaction with peers and social relationship. The social competence was highlighted as important for interventions aimed at reducing weight.展开更多

Method: Sample was taken from especial elementary school for educable intellectual disability children in Mashhad, Iran. The sample was boys between 9 - 11 years. After the initial selection of students, they were randomly assigned to two groups of twenty (experimental and control groups). 7 sessions of music therapy were performed for each one in the experimental group whereas no sessions were applied for anyone in the control group. Winelend Social Growth Scale was used to measure their social skill before and after intervention. Result: The mean difference in social skill between the two groups were statistically less than the 0.01 which is highly significant (P-value = 0.0005). This shows that art and music therapy are effective on the growth of social skills in educable intellectual disability children. Conclusion: This research shows that music therapy is effective for improvement of social skills in educable intellectual disability children.展开更多

Social learners are thought to attain novel information or skills faster and at lower cost than asocial learners. In this study, we examined what types of learning affect the acquisition of efficient feeding behavior by the wood mouse Apodemus speciosus when feeding on large, hard-shelled walnuts. In house cages, na?ve mice acquired an efficient feeding manner during the 14-day conditioning to walnuts, suggesting individual trial-and-error learning contributes to their feeding skills. Social factors such as learning from walnuts that have been opened by other individuals or by observing walnut consumption by proficient conspecifics did not affect the rate of acquisition of efficient feeding. However, weaned offspring could eat walnuts more efficiently and frequently if the mother had been given walnuts during her rearing period. Thus, the skill is likely transmitted between the mother and offspring in addition to individual self-learning.展开更多

文摘Mammalian feeding behavior is often acquired or improved by learning. Thus, the skill is likely transmitted between the mother and offspring in addition to individual self-learning.
