Antioxidant potentials of various solvent extracts from stem bark of <i>Enantia chlorantha</i>

The stem bark of Enantia chlorantha is commonly used for the treatment of malaria and other ailments of the human body such as cough and wound. The plant had been intensely studied for its antimicrobial activities and antipyretic properties. However, the efficacy and mechanisms of action of the plant remain unclear. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to determine the in vitro antioxidant activity of the various solvent extracts from stem bark of Enantia chlorantha. In vitro antioxidant activity of certain extracts of stem bark of Enantia chlorantha such as methanol extract (ME), n-hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate, and aqueous fractions (HF, CF, EF and AF respectively) was evaluated using models of DPPH radical scavenging activity, ferric reducing property (FRAP), nitric oxide scavenging activity, hydroxyl radical scavenging activity. The inhibition of lipid oxidation, total flavonoids and phenolic contents of the extracts were also determined using spectrophotometric methods. The result revealed the highest phenolic and flavonoid contents in the methanol extract followed by AF, EF and CF while HF contained the least concentration. Free radical scavenging potentials of the extracts were found to be proportional to their respective phenolic and flavonoid contents. Our results suggest that part of the mechanisms through which the plant is used in folk medicine for the treatment of stress related diseases such as malaria, and cough and wound may be through its antioxidant activity, DPPH, nitric oxide , hydroxyl radical scavenging abilities and reducing power. 展开更多

In this study, we evaluated the anti-cancer property of five bark extracts and the isolates from chloroform and ethyl acetate of Annickia chlorantha by the tetrazolium salt method (MTT method). The anti-cancer activity was performed on human prostate cancer cell lines PC-3 and hormone-dependent breast cancer cell lines MCF-7. Results indicated that the two isolates displayed interesting cytotoxicity towards MCF-7 cell lines with CC<sub>50</sub> of 3.84 CC<sub>50</sub>/mL and 4.87 CC<sub>50</sub>/mL for chloroform and ethyl acetate respectively;while the total bark extracts showed CC<sub>50</sub> of 24.33 CC<sub>50</sub>/mL, 36.49 CC<sub>50</sub>/ mL and 73.52 CC<sub>50</sub>/mL for chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts respectively. By the other hand on PC-3, the CC<sub>50</sub> of the isolates were higher than the one on MCF-7, more than 10 CC<sub>50</sub>/mL for both chloroform and ethyl acetate isolates and 49.14 CC<sub>50</sub>/mL, 77.33 CC<sub>50</sub>/mL, 89.38 CC<sub>50</sub>/mL and 92.37 CC<sub>50</sub>/mL, respectively for chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol soluble extracts. From this study, we identified that the two isolates had anti-cancer properties against MCF-7 cell lines. 展开更多

目的:通过文献查阅及整理,对寒热中药外用治疗口腔溃疡进行回顾与思考。方法:以CNKI,VIP数据库为依据,以口腔溃疡、中药外用、复方、临床研究、药理研究等为关键词,查阅数据库中近10年的相关文献,对单味药及复方中药治疗口腔溃疡的情况... 目的:通过文献查阅及整理,对寒热中药外用治疗口腔溃疡进行回顾与思考。方法:以CNKI,VIP数据库为依据,以口腔溃疡、中药外用、复方、临床研究、药理研究等为关键词,查阅数据库中近10年的相关文献,对单味药及复方中药治疗口腔溃疡的情况进行整理和分析。结果:外用治疗口腔溃疡的寒凉中药包括草珊瑚、青黛、白及、枯矾;温热中药包括细辛、吴茱萸、丁香、蜈蚣。复方中药主要有溃疡散、冰硼散、双黄连粉等,其方法以局部涂抹、穴位贴敷为主。结论:从寒热药性角度,对中药外用治疗口腔溃疡的文献进行系统分析,将为临床治疗口腔溃疡提供参考。 展开更多
