Study of Rice Husks and Expanded Polystyrene Composites for Construction Applications

In the current context of environmental challenges, this study focuses on developing innovative and eco-friendly composites using rice husk and recycled expanded polystyrene. This dual-responsibility approach valorizes a by-product like rice husk, often considered waste, and reuses polystyrene, a plastic waste, thereby contributing to CO2 emission reduction and effective waste management. The manufacturing process involves dissolving recycled polystyrene into a solvent to create a binder, which is then mixed with rice husk and cold-compacted into composite materials. The study examines the impact of two particle sizes (fine and coarse) and different proportions of recycled polystyrene binder. The results show significant variations in the mechanical characteristics of the composites, with Modulus of Rupture (MOR) values varying from 2.41 to 3.47 MPa, Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) ranging from 223.41 to 1497.2 MPa, and Stiffness Coefficient (K) from 5.04 to 33.96 N/mm. These characteristics demonstrate that these composites are appropriate for various construction applications, including interior decoration, panel claddings, and potentially for furniture and door manufacturing when combined with appropriate coatings. This study not only highlights the recycling of agricultural and plastic waste but also provides a localized approach to addressing global climate change challenges through the adoption of sustainable building materials. 展开更多

Bio-cement and bio-concrete are innovative solutions for sustainable construction, aiming to reduce environmental impact while maintaining the durability and versatility of building materials. Bio-cement is an eco-friendly alternative to traditional cement, produced through Microbially Induced Calcium Carbonate Precipitation (MICP), which mimics natural biomineralization processes. This method reduces CO2 emissions and enhances the strength and durability of construction materials. Bio-concrete incorporates bio-cement into concrete, creating a self-healing material. When cracks form in bio-concrete, dormant bacteria within the material become active in the presence of water, producing limestone to fill the cracks, extending the material’s lifespan and reducing the need for repairs. The environmental impact of traditional cement production is significant, with cement generation accounting for up to 8% of global carbon emissions. Creative solutions are needed to develop more sustainable construction materials, with some efforts using modern innovations to make concrete ultra-durable and others turning to science to create affordable bio-cement. The research demonstrates the potential of bio-cement to revolutionize sustainable building practices by offering a low-energy, low-emission alternative to traditional cement while also addressing environmental concerns. The findings suggest promising applications in various construction scenarios, including earthquake-prone areas, by enhancing material durability and longevity through self-repair mechanisms. 展开更多

After the discussion of accomplishments of ecological urban construction in Suzhou City, the current ecological urban construction in Suzhou has been compared with the national standard for ecological urban construction. According to the actual situation of Suzhou urban construction, the health evaluation index system and standards for urban eco-system have been established based on natural, economic and social sub-system. By using mean square deviation, indexes' weights have been identified. After the quantitative research on the health condition of urban eco-system in Suzhou City from 2004 to 2008, it has found key problems existing in its ecological urban construction. The results show that Suzhou urban eco-system develops well in general, but the three sub-systems are coordinated with each other moderately, and natural sub-system suffers severe pressure. 展开更多

In order to better understand the development level of eco-efficiency in Southeast Guizhou's experimental area of eco-civilization construction,we conduct dynamic comparison research of its eco-efficiency and the national eco-efficiency,using single ratio method based on the ecological footprint model,to grasp the gap between its eco-efficiency and the national eco-efficiency,so that we can take appropriate countermeasures to improve eco-efficiency. The results show that in the period 1978-2010,the eco-efficiency in Southeast Guizhou's experimental area of eco-civilization construction was always lower than the national eco-efficiency; the long-time average annual value of its eco-efficiency was less than one half of that of the national eco-efficiency,with the absolute gap of 1 630. 095 yuan /hm 2 ,and the gap tended to widen year by year in the period 1978-2002 ( the gap increased from 276. 551 yuan /hm 2 in 1978 to peak of 3 227. 713 yuan /hm 2 in 2002,with an average annual increase of 118. 047 yuan /hm 2 ,and especially after 1992,the gap was particularly evident,with an average annual increase of 194.771 yuan/hm 2 ) ,but from 2003,the gap between the two tended to decrease. Based on the prediction results of grey system,in the period 2011-2025,the gap between the eco-efficiency in Southeast Guizhou's experimental area of eco-civilization construction and the national eco-efficiency will gradually narrow,and from 2019, the eco-efficiency in Southeast Guizhou's experimental area of eco-civilization construction will be higher than the national eco-efficiency. 展开更多

关于黄河与河套古湖河湖关系演变的假说性分析——兼论对黄河内蒙古段生态治理的启示

黄河曾经在流经河套盆地过程中形成吉兰泰、乌兰布和、巴彦淖尔、呼包4个古湖,且在高湖面时期连成统一的“河套古大湖”,其后4湖分离并分别演绎了自己的河湖关系。在研习前人相关成果基础上,通过建立整体假说性解释框架,试图按照历史顺... 黄河曾经在流经河套盆地过程中形成吉兰泰、乌兰布和、巴彦淖尔、呼包4个古湖,且在高湖面时期连成统一的“河套古大湖”,其后4湖分离并分别演绎了自己的河湖关系。在研习前人相关成果基础上,通过建立整体假说性解释框架,试图按照历史顺序与逻辑顺序统一的要求对该河段河湖关系的演变过程进行重建,并为与之相关的生态系统的治理提供借鉴。研究认为:主河道构建是黄河主动实施填湖、建堤、造槽并“甩湖”的过程与结果;冲积扇是黄河填湖的主要模式,而冲积扇顶附近凸起则是湖口淤塞、移动并最终筑成黄河自然堤的主要原因;巴彦木仁与磴口两地控制点对形成鄂尔多斯一侧黄河主河道起到了关键性作用;黄河西派在高湖面期间从巴彦木仁湖口注入吉兰泰-乌兰布和古湖,与从北面入湖的黄河水共同促成贺日木西尼古砂嘴及其延伸砂脊生长,并在低湖面期将这两个湖分离。基于对所述黄河历史过往的认识,须尽可能立足高效集成利用有限水资源这一观念,将减灾与适度重造沿河湖泊和绿洲结合,营建可持续的内蒙古段黄河生态体系。 展开更多
