The high reliability of the communication system is critical in metro and mining applications for personal safety,channel optimization,and improving operational performance.This paper surveys the progress of wireless communication systems in underground environments such as tunnels and mines from 1920 to 2022,including the evolution of primitive technology,advancements in channel modelling,and realization of various wireless propagation channels.In addition,the existing and advanced channel modeling strategies,which include the evolution of different technologies and their applications;mathematical,analytical,and experimental techniques for radio propagation;and significance of the radiation characteristics,antenna placement,and physical environment of multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO)communication systems,are analyzed.The given study introduces leaky coaxial cable(LCX)and distributed antenna system(DAS)designs for improving narrowband and wideband channel capacity.The paper concludes by figuring out open research areas for the future technologies. 展开更多

The waveguide to coaxial cable adapter is very important to the cavity beam position monitor (CBPM) because it determines how much of the energy in the cavity could be coupled outside. In this paper, the waveguide to coaxial cable adapter of a CBPM is designed and experiments are conducted. The curve shapes of experiments and simulations are very similar and the difference in reflection is less than 0.1. This progress provides a reliable method for designing the adapter. 展开更多

A novel smart steel strand based on optical-electrical co-sensing for full-process and full-scale monitoring of prestressing concrete structures

As the main load bearing component,the steel strand has a significant impact on the safety of civil infrastructure.Real-time monitoring of steel strand stress distribution throughout the damage process is an impor-tant aspect of civil infrastructure health assessment.Hence,this study proposes an optical-electrical co-sensing(OECS)smart steel strand with the DOFS and CCFPI embedded in.It can simultaneously measure small strains in the initial damage phase with high accuracy and obtain information in the large deformation phase with relatively low precision.Several experiments were carried out to test its sensing performance.It shows both DOFS and CCFPI have good linearity,repeatability and hysteresis.In comparison to DOFS,CCFPI has a relatively lower accuracy and resolution,but a large enough measurement range to tolerate the large strain in the event of a steel strand failure.To verify the reliability of the proposed smart steel strand in real structures,the strand strain distribution in the full damage process of bonded prestressed beams under four-point bending loading was monitored using the smart steel strand as a prestressing tendon.The strain measured by the OECS steel strand is shown to reflect the deformation and stiffness variation of prestressed beams under different load. 展开更多

It determines the amplitude and length of the dipole mode signal. In this paper, Qext of a CBPM whose waveguides were open to the air was simulated and measured, and the results agreed with each other. Then four waveguide-to-coaxial cable adpaters were adjusted and assembled to the CBPM, and Qext remained unchanged. This progress provides a reliable method to evaluate Qext in the physics design without simulating the structurally complex adapters. 展开更多
