A Study of Code-Switching in Students' Talk in College English Class

Code-switching between English and Chinese usually occurs in students' talk when they are involved in taking communicative language activities in college English class. This paper studies the situations in which students are likely to use codeswitching and analyzes it from the perspective of the mental world in Verscheren's Adaptation Theory. It shows that inadequate mastery of English language, cultural differences and the improper adjustment to context may lead to students' using of codeswitching. It also shows that the use of code-switching in students' talk adapts to students' cognitive elements and emotive elements as well.

A Study of EFL Teachers' code-switching in Vocational College Intensive Reading Classroom

In the past 30 years, code-switching has been a focus in the field of linguistics in western countries. Researchers stud?ied it from different angles and have made a lot of findings.However, the researchers in China begin their studies on this issue un?til the last decade. Thus,the relevent empirical studies were less and most of them only use students from the classrooms in the sec?ondary schools or the undergraduates in the universities as the subjects.They paid little attention to the EFL classrooms in the vo?cational colleges. Vocational college students are poor in English foundation. English teachers can not finish their teaching mission in English classroom, so the use of code-switching becomes a very common phenomenon in EFL class of vocational college. In order to make teaching and learning promote and enhance each other, according to previous research findings, this paper do a fur?ther study about the teachers' use of code switching in the vocational college English intensive reading classes in China.

Code-switching is a linguistic behavior that arises as a result of languages coming into contact. The idea of codeswitching was proposed since the 1970 s and has been heatedly discussed. A Study of Code-switching in Chinese EFL Classrooms： A Pragmatic Approach

Teacher Talk Code-switching in College English Teaching Classroom

Code-switching is considered as a strategy of cognition, interaction and teaching. Foreign language teachers often use code-switching as a skill of pedagogy to teach students to learn foreign language and promote their own teaching practice. Chinese University Students’Attitudes Toward Chinese-English Classroom Code-Switching

This study investigates students’attitudes towards classroom code-switching(CS)between Chinese and English,and how such attitudes are influenced by learning motivation and language anxiety,the two focal variables of the present study.A total of 550 students from a university in northwest China took part in an online survey.The results of quantitative analyses suggest a division of attitudes towards CS,acknowledging its usefulness but dismissing its symbolic value.Such attitudes can be predicted based on the focal learner characteristics.The implications of the findings are discussed vis-à-vis the social psychology of CS and an optimal use of CS to assist language learning and teaching.

The Code-Switching Dimension of Guided Fantasies in Young Learner L2 Classroom

The paper reports on a study of young L2 （second language） English learners＇ dual code use as activated through a series of specially designed guided fantasies. The original concept of guided fantasies as a monolingually organised relaxation technique was extended to the area of bilingual reception and production. The goal was to examine the relationship between child imaginative faculty and a tendency to transfer understandings across the L1 （first language） and L2. The research consisted in exposing a class of I 0 nine-year-old children to eight guided fantasies expected to playfully attract their conscious attention to language properties and enable them to profit from L1 knowledge in L2 learning. The data were collected through the heuristically oriented qualitative study drawing on participant observation accompanied by field notes and recordings of student behaviours. The findings highlighted guided fantasies in their redefined form as a useful tool for encouraging young learners to rely on L 1 competence in making sense of L2 underlying principles.

Teacher’s Code-switching to L1 in Chinese College EFL Class

The paper tries to explore teachers’ code-switching to Chinese in EFL classroom. Quantitative and qualitative research methods are adopted in the study. The case study centers on showing the attitude of teachers and that of students towards the CS to L1. It indicated that both teachers and students had positive attitude toward CS to Chinese in EFL classroom. The results in the classroom recording showed that students’ English proficiency level influenced the frequency of teachers’ CS;teachers alternate to Chinese mainly to facilitate students’ understanding or to emphasize some key points.

Using Code-Switching in American University-Level FL Classrooms: A Communicative and Teaching Strategy

In recent years,the use of first language(L1)in teaching of second and foreign languages(L2/FL)has been a highly con⁃troversial issue in language teaching and learning studies.This qualitative case study of four American instructors use of codeswitching in their FL teaching explores in what occasion,in what ways,and for what reasons the instructors switched between stu⁃dents’native language and target languages.The results indicate that instructors’choices are to a great extent influenced by vari⁃ous factors,including their personal preferences,class subjects,and communicative purposes.Discussions about new discoveries have also been conducted.
