The Impact of Social Media on Dietary Behaviors and Body Image of College Students: A Qualitative Approach

Background: The use of social media platforms for health and nutrition information has become popular among college students. Although social media made information readily accessible in different formats, nutritional misinformation promoted by influencers and non-experts caused negative impact on diet behavior and perception of body image. Previous research indicated that extensive use of social media was positively linked to disordered eating behaviors. Social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram that allow users to follow celebrities intensified exposure to influencers’ messages and images and resulted in negative moods and body dissatisfaction. Objective: This paper aims to explore the impact of social media on college students’ dietary behaviors and body image. Participants: 18 undergraduate students from a public university in the Southern United States were recruited through a mass email. Methods: A cross-sectional qualitative study of three focus groups was conducted. The focus groups were based on guiding open-ended questions. Atlas.ti was used to code and analyze the data using inductive and deductive codes. Results: Three main themes were identified. The conditions theme included elements that explain why and how social media influences the participants’ actions. The actions theme included eating behavior, physical activity, and dietary supplement intake. The consequences theme describes anticipated or actual outcomes of actions such as body image and ideal weight. Conclusions: Social media has had a negative influence on diet behaviors and a positive influence on physical activity. Evidence-based nutrition and weight management information is needed to thwart potential misinformation.

Relationship between Moral Elevation and Prosocial Behavior among College Students: The Mediating Role of Perceived Social Support and Moderating Role of Moral Identity

Objectives:The present study examined the relationship between college students’moral elevation and prosocial behavior.As well as the mediating role of perceived social support and the moderating role of moral identity.Methods:A sample of 489 college students were recruited for the study.They were asked to complete a series of questionnaires,including Moral Elevation Scale(MES),Perceived Social Support Scale(PSSS),Moral Identity Scale(MIS)and Prosocial Tendency Measure(PTM).As part of the data analysis,we used correlation analysis and the method of constructing latent variable structural equation model to explore the mechanism of action among variables.Results:After controlling for gender,discipline,the research found that:(1)Moral elevation positively predicted the prosocial behavior among the college students;(2)Perceived social support mediated the relationship between moral elevation and prosocial behavior;(3)Moral identity moderated the second half of the model(i.e.,the link between perceived social support and prosocial behavior).Specifically,the mediating effect of perceived social support was stronger for college students with high-level moral identity compared to those with low-level moral identity.Conclusions:Moral identity significantly moderates the mediating effect of perceived social support,and the mediating model with moderated is established.

Research on Practical Pathways of Strengthening Labor Education for College and University Students in the New Era

Labor education is an essential component of college and university education that can help students to develop a strong work ethic,acquire practical skills,and better understand the value of work.Strengthening labor education for college and university students is an urgent need of the high-quality development of the society and the internal requirement of promoting the all-round development of individuals.This study analyzes the importance of strengthening labor education for college and university students in the new era and proposes four practical pathways which draw on labor courses and campus activities,social practices,scientific research projects,and internships.After implementing these pathways,a survey of 967 students showed that students’understanding and awareness of labor was deepened,their hands-on skills and interests in science and labor practices were improved,and they became more cordially respectful to the working class.Taken together,the exploration and practice of these pathways helps college and university students to recognize their abilities,strengths,and interests,and guides them to form good labor habits that permeate all aspects of their studies and lives.

The Role of Skills Competitions in Improving the Practical Ability of Vocational College Students

Vocational education and general education are two different types of education that are equally important.The orientation of talent training in vocational education is to nurture skilled talents to serve the society.The practical ability of students is both the focus of teaching in vocational colleges and the requirement of enterprise posts.The various types of skills competitions provide a“stage”for students to showcase their abilities.First,this paper explores students’problem-solving ability while preparing for these competitions,expounding the importance of vocational education and skills competitions.Second,this paper summarizes the views of different scholars.Third,based on a specific case,this paper describes the improvement in students’ability while preparing for these competitions.Fourth,this paper analyzes the results of the questionnaire survey conducted to investigate the improvement in students’ability.Lastly,this paper puts forward several suggestions that appeal for vocational colleges to pay more attention to skills competitions.

Knowledge,attitude,practice and factors that influence the awareness of college students with regards to breast cancer

BACKGROUND Breast cancer has the highest incidence of all global cancers.Recent data show that breast cancer is becoming more prevalent in the younger population.Therefore,preventing breast cancer in young populations is a significant priority for public health.Relevant investigations of the incidence of breast cancer in young females have already been undertaken in China;however,none of these previous studies investigated the awareness of female college students with regards to breast cancer.AIM To investigate the knowledge,attitude,and practice(KAP)of female college students in Yunnan with regards to breast cancer and a series of influential factors.METHODS A random sample of 1387 female college students from two universities in Dali city were investigated by questionnaires.RESULTS The total KAP scores for breast cancer were 9.86±2.50,3.19±2.01 and 13.31±2.49,respectively.Multiple linear regression analysis showed that educational grade was the most significant influential factor underlying the level of knowledge female college students had with regards to the treatment of breast cancer(P<0.05).Registered residence and educational grade were the most significant factors that influenced attitude(P<0.05).Age,registered residence,grade and major,were the most significant factors that influenced behavior(P<0.05).The KAP of female college students in western Yunnan with regards to breast cancer were low.CONCLUSION There is an urgent need to provide standardized publicity and educational strategies in China to improve the knowledge,attitude,and practice,of college students with regards to breast cancer.

This study aims to investigate the influence of social media on college choice among undergraduates majoring in Big Data Management and Application in China.The study attempts to reveal how information on social media platforms such as Weibo,WeChat,and Zhihu influences the cognition and choice process of prospective students.By employing an online quantitative survey questionnaire,data were collected from the 2022 and 2023 classes of new students majoring in Big Data Management and Application at Guilin University of Electronic Technology.The aim was to evaluate the role of social media in their college choice process and understand the features and information that most attract prospective students.Social media has become a key factor influencing the college choice decision-making of undergraduates majoring in Big Data Management and Application in China.Students tend to obtain school information through social media platforms and use this information as an important reference in their decision-making process.Higher education institutions should strengthen their social media information dissemination,providing accurate,timely,and attractive information.It is also necessary to ensure effective management of social media platforms,maintain a positive reputation for the school on social media,and increase the interest and trust of prospective students.Simultaneously,educational decision-makers should consider incorporating social media analysis into their recruitment strategies to better attract new student enrollment.This study provides a new perspective for understanding higher education choice behavior in the digital age,particularly by revealing the importance of social media in the educational decision-making process.This has important practical and theoretical implications for higher education institutions,policymakers,and social media platform operators.

An Empirical Study on the Efficiency of Peer Counseling with Students from Independent College

The research is to involve an experiment with a class composed of both liberal art and science students from an independent college. In the experiment, peer counselors are to be recruited as subjects I, while subjects II are to be made up of the experimental group and the control group. First, subjects I and subjects II will undergo a pretest by Tennessee Self-Concept Scale and Inventory of Interpersonal Problems- 32（IIP-32）. Then, after an intervention experiment that involves training and counseling of the peer counselors, subjects 1 and subjects II are to undergo a post-test. Finally, the statistic procedures of independent sample t and paired sample t are to be employed to assess the data. The results show that in the process of receiving training and counseling, the peer counselors achieve profound improvement in their cognitive level of self- concept, while their problems in interpersonal relationships are significantly reduced. The same is also observed in the experimental group after carrying out the counseling of the peer counselors. All this demonstrates that peer counseling is conducive to the improvement of university students＇ osvchological well-being.
