Reduction of Tobacco Smoking Health Risk Through an Appropriate Media Based Communication Strategy in Uganda

The health impacts of tobacco consumption are well documented and have gained acceptance worldwide. Today, a substantial, preventable burden of tobacco attributable diseases exists in most countries, though in most of the cases, unknown. Smoking accounts for almost half of the deaths in middle age in some regions. In Uganda, translating findings into policy action is slow and involves several stakeholders. It will continue to require support from tobacco control campaign groups. This paper analyses secondary literature on tobacco smoking and later provides an appropriate medium based communication strategy that can be adopted to counteract the persuasive smoking evil adverts of tobacco companies as well as creating awareness among the population of the health impacts caused by smoking.

Strategies for Video Producers to Tell Their Good Stories Under the 5W Model of Communication

In recent years,with the rise of video media such as YouTube and Tik Tok,the short video creation industry has emerged.How to spread China's excellent culture and how to“tell a good Chinese story”have become a hot concern.Using the 5W Model of Communication as a framework for analysis,this paper selects Chinese short videos with high popularity on YouTube as the object of the study.Studies found that the success of these videos was associated with five factors in the process of communication,which are communication main forces,communication content,communication channels,communication audience,and audience effects.Through theoretical and data analysis,the study concluded five strategies in video production to help promote Intercultural communication.

Lecturers’Efforts in Building Rapport in the English-Medium Instruction(EMI)Context:Focus on the Use of Communication Strategies

Past studies reveal the prevalence of anxiety,coupled with low motivation and disengagement among students in English-medium instruction(EMI)programs.Given the detrimental impact these negative emotions can have on learning outcomes,it is imperative that teachers establish positive emotional rapport with their students.This study explores how experienced and highly rated EMI lecturers at a Chinese university’s overseas campus use communication strategies to build rapport with their students during interactive academic activities.It identifies the strategies used by these lecturers and examines how the strategies facilitate the teaching-learning process.The data,consisting of 10 hours of tutorials and 10 hours of supervisor-student supervision meetings,is analyzed using an adapted Conversation Analysis(CA)approach.The analysis reveals three types of communication strategies(CSs)frequently used by lecturers:back-channeling,codeswitching,and co-creation of messages.By employing these strategies,the lecturers established a strong rapport with the students,which created an encouraging and supportive learning environment.Consequently,this positive atmosphere facilitated students’learning of content knowledge through English.The findings of this study have implications for the training of lecturers who encounter difficulties in establishing rapport with multilingual students in the EMI setting.

A study on pragmatic failure in cross-cultural communication

Through analyzing and comparing the anecdotes of pragmatic failure in cross-cultural communication from the aspects of lexicon, syntax and discourse, some pragmatic strategies are suggested in intercultural communication. To improve learners＇ cultural awareness and communicative competence, a cultural-linguistic approach in foreign language teaching should be adopted.

On solving fossilization of spoken English of non-English college students by means of communication strategies

The paper starts with the notions of communicative competence and communicative strategies, and proposes that communicative strategies competence, one of the four communicative competences, plays an important role in improving the overall competence in communication. Meanwhile, communication strategies, which are indispensable in communicative activities, make it necessary for teachers to cultivate students＇ strategies awareness and enable them to practice communicative strategies so as to further develop their communicative strategies.

Utilizing Communication Strategies to Develop Learner Autonomy

This paper investigates the effects of communication strategy instruction on the promotion of learner autonomy and introduces the two stages of CS instruction. Autonomous learners are characterized by their knowledge of strategies and the efficient control over their use. Then it is reasonable to speculate that the inclusion of CS instruction in foreign language classroom would help learners become more autonomous because the efficient and controlled use of CS should be an integral part of the strategic behavior that characterizes autonomous learners.

Exosomes rewire the cartilage microenvironment in osteoarthritis:from intercellular communication to therapeutic strategies

Osteoarthritis(OA)is a prevalent degenerative joint disease characterized by cartilage loss and accounts for a major source of pain and disability worldwide.However,effective strategies for cartilage repair are lacking,and patients with advanced OA usually need joint replacement.Better comprehending OA pathogenesis may lead to transformative therapeutics.Recently studies have reported that exosomes act as a new means of cell-to-cell communication by delivering multiple bioactive molecules to create a particular microenvironment that tunes cartilage behavior.Specifically,exosome cargos,such as noncoding RNAs(ncRNAs)and proteins,play a crucial role in OA progression by regulating the proliferation,apoptosis,autophagy,and inflammatory response of joint cells,rendering them promising candidates for OA monitoring and treatment.This review systematically summarizes the current insight regarding the biogenesis and function of exosomes and their potential as therapeutic tools targeting cell-to-cell communication in OA,suggesting new realms to improve OA management.

Communication Strategies for Chinese Documentaries from High-context to Low-context Culture: A Comparative Study of “Wild China” of BBC and CCTV Version

As an important means of cultural transmission,documentaries are a powerful tool to make known the five thousand years of Chinese civilization to people all over the world.The“Wild China”of BBC version,popular among the great majority of overseas audience,serves as a successful carrier of Chinese culture export.Based on the theory of low-context and high-context culture,this paper uses the method of text analysis and focuses on the study of the texts in the Chinese and English versions of“Wild China”and explores the differences in the texts in terms of content and rhythm.The purpose of this study is to avoid cultural misunderstanding and optimize communication effect.Findings of this study show that against the background of low-context(English)and high-context(Chinese)culture,the English version has a good sense of rhythm,uses rhetoric for vivid description,expresses ideas directly,and provides explanation for phenomena through narrating or telling a story.But Chinese version has plainer descriptions,uses more euphemistic or abstract words,analyzes phenomena in less detail and narrates more formally.So,it is suggested that in translating texts into English,concepts need to be made accessible,logical and direct with more explanation,more rhetoric,more objective evaluation,and less pursuit of artistic abstraction.These communication strategies conforming to low-context culture can help overseas audience accept Chinese culture more easily.

The Attributes of Social Media as a Strategic Marketing Communication Tool

New digital trends are transforming the media industry landscape, modifying elemental characteristics and attitudes of companies as well as of consumers. Firms often claim that their presence in social media （SM） is a key element to success. SM helps companies rethink the traditional one-way flow of their marketing messages and to incorporate a new interactive pattern into their communications. Nevertheless, these tendencies involve problems of strategic myopia for firms that do not structurally integrate these tools. One main problem is that institutions can rarely differentiate between the various types of SM and the attributes thereof, while the literature equally reveals a number of contradictions in the subject. The present conceptual paper lays the foundations of a strategic approach to SM and discusses its theoretical implications. Following an overview on the concept of SM, through a content analysis of the specialized management literature （n = 14）, we present various best practices and reflect on the apparent lack of strategic thinking in using SM as a marketing application. Then, we compare these practical examples with general marketing strategy theory. By merging theory and practice, we aim to provide an insight towards a well-founded application of SM as a genuinely strategic marketing tool.

Communicative Strategy Used by EFL Learners at Tertiary Level： A Perspective From a Teacher-Researcher

This paper presents the result of a qualitative research of the communicative strategies used by tertiary learners in the oral English test with a paired format. Data for the study were collected by recording and transcribing a whole session of oral English test. By noting down and classifying different types of communicative feature occurred in the recording, the research aims to locate the difficulties the learners have in managing smooth conversation, analyze the possible reasons and get enlightenment for oral English teaching from a teacher-researcher perspective.

Application of a Parallel Adaptive Cuckoo Search Algorithm in the Rectangle Layout Problem

The meta-heuristic algorithm is a global probabilistic search algorithm for the iterative solution.It has good performance in global optimization fields such as maximization.In this paper,a new adaptive parameter strategy and a parallel communication strategy are proposed to further improve the Cuckoo Search(CS)algorithm.This strategy greatly improves the convergence speed and accuracy of the algorithm and strengthens the algorithm’s ability to jump out of the local optimal.This paper compares the optimization performance of Parallel Adaptive Cuckoo Search(PACS)with CS,Parallel Cuckoo Search(PCS),Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO),Sine Cosine Algorithm(SCA),Grey Wolf Optimizer(GWO),Whale Optimization Algorithm(WOA),Differential Evolution(DE)and Artificial Bee Colony(ABC)algorithms by using the CEC-2013 test function.The results show that PACS algorithmoutperforms other algorithms in 20 of 28 test functions.Due to the superior performance of PACS algorithm,this paper uses it to solve the problem of the rectangular layout.Experimental results show that this scheme has a significant effect,and the material utilization rate is improved from89.5%to 97.8%after optimization.

An Analysis of the Implication of Communication Strategies to Students of English Learning in Polytechnic Colleges

The taxonomies of learner strategies and classification of communication strategies is reviewed; the role of communication strategies in language use and learning is discussed, with a critical appraisal included. Suggestions to avoid the problems arising from the limitations of the use of communication strategies was given for students of English learning in Chinese polytechnic colleges.

Analysis of the Stakeholder Engagement in the Deployment of Renewables and Smart Grid Technologies

The implementation of higher shares of renewables in a global energy mix has to be accompanied by simultaneous deployment of enabling smart grid technologies （SGTs）. This combination will inevitably lead to a revolutionary change in a conventional energy system, particularly, the shifting role of consumers to prosnmers. But resistance may arise from such a dramatic shift, since it is associated with high uncertainty in conjunction with increasing responsibilities of all stakeholders, the urgent need of effective control, and the development of a process. To ensure the positive influence, coherent actions of all players, and appropriate treatment of the spots of resistance, the analysis of the interplay between key stakeholders has been done. The paper introduces the framework for stakeholders＇ analysis, applies it on the European Union （EU） example, and provides recommendations to reduce the resistance of SGTs deployment.

Reconsideration on the role of pragmatic transfer

This paper reconsiders the role of L 1 pragmatic transfer on English learning after a brief historical review of the pragmatic transfer research. As pragmatic transfer is a communicative strategy which the language learners tend to use to deal with the immediate problems and difficulties in communication and to develop their pragmatic competence of the target language, the paper comes to the conclusion that foreign language teachers should consciously introduce the pragmatic transfer as a communicative strategy into the classroom teaching, and try to find effective means to cultivate their students＇ abilities of pragmatic transfer in order to develop pragmatic competence.

Improved PSO for integrating dynamic cell formation and layout problems

To decrease the impact of shorter product life cycles,dynamic cell formation problems(CFPs)and cell layout problems(CLPs)were simultaneously optimized.First,CFPs and CLPs were formally described.Due to the changes of product demands and the lim it of machine capacity,the existing layout needed to be rearranged to a high degree.Secondly,a mathematical model was established for the objective function of minimizing the total costs.Thirdly,a novel dynamic multi-swarm particle swarm optimization(DMS-PSO)algorithm based on the communication learning strategy(CLS)was developed.Toavoid falling into local optimum and slow convergence,each swarm shared their optimal locations before regrouping.Finally,simulation experiments were conducted under different conditions.Numerical results indicate that the proposed algorithm has better stability and it converges faster than other existing algorithms.

College Students＇ English Communicative Competence and Communicative Strategic Development

Many university students in China remain less competent in addressing all kinds of communication breakdowns. And the classical teaching approach has long been put in question in the contemporary literature. Communicative strategies have an intimate relationship with communicative competence. Learners＇ effective and efficient employment of communicative strategies are the revelation of their strategic competence as well as communicative competence. This paper aims to reinforce learners＇ communicative competence by improving their communicative strategies and consequently improve their language proficiency, and helps to provide Chinese teachers with approaches to the development of students＇ communication strategies in classroom teaching. Therefore, in contrast with the old classroom teaching ＂TTT＂, a new teaching model ＂LLL＂ is proposed in this paper.

An efficient parallel algorithm for ocean circulation numerical model based on irregular rectangle decomposition scheme

A parallel algorithm of circulation numerical model based on message passing interface（MPI） is developed using serialization and an irregular rectangle decomposition scheme. Neighboring point exchange strategy（NPES） is adopted to further enhance the computational efficiency. Two experiments are conducted on HP C7000 Blade System, the numerical results show that the parallel version with NPES（PVN） produces higher efficiency than the original parallel version（PV）. The PVN achieves parallel efficiency in excess of 0.9 in the second experiment when the number of processors increases to 100, while the efficiency of PV decreases to 0.39 rapidly. The PVN of ocean circulation model is used in a fine-resolution regional simulation, which produces better results. The capability of universal implementation of this algorithm makes it applicable in many other ocean models potentially.
