Communicative Ability and Cross-cultural Competence in China＇s English Teaching

Traditional grammar-translation ：method in China＇s English teaching has long been putting emphasis on the teaching of linguistic knowledge. It is no doubt that it has got many achievements. However, it has produced many bad byproducts as well. For instance, it may produce some students who are good in grammatical achievements but lacking in responding to the actual situation. Therefore linguistic knowledge is not the whole field that English teaching should touch upon. Inducing from two instances, this article presents the importance of communicative ability and cross-cultural competence in China＇s English teaching, together with proper solutions.

USING GAMES TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ COMMUNICATIVE ABILITY

IntroductionIn recent years,more and more objections have been raised against the traditional English teachingmethod in China and English teachers have begun to try out a more communicative methodology.Inthis article,I intend to point out the disadvantages of the traditional teaching method and introduceone way to teach students effectively-using games in the English class,which is one useful techniqueof the communicative method.I propose to talk about the importance of using games and list eighttypes of games to practise students’ speaking and listening.Finally,I will put forward someconsideration on using games and state the success of using games based on a questionnaire given tothe students I have taught.

A Study on Left-behind Children's Communicative Willingness and Language Ability under the Influence of Internet Addiction--A Case Study of Zhejiang Province

This research studies the language communication barrier of left-behind children under the influence of Internet addiction.Leftbehind children aged 8-13 in primary school were taken as the research object.A total of 320 left-behind children from 10 primary schools in 5 regions of Zhejiang Province were selected as the research objects.In addition,30 primary school language teachers in Zhejiang Province were interviewed to explore the communicative willingness and language expression of left-behind children under the influence of"Internet addiction,"analyze the obstacle factors affecting the language communicative ability,and put forward corresponding opinions and suggestions.

Research on the Cultivation of Intercultural Communication Ability in College Foreign Language Teaching under the"Belt and Road"

With the continuous deepening of the “Belt and Road” initiative, frequent international economic and cultural exchanges have alsoplaced new demands on the language and cross-cultural communication capabilities of Chinese university students. In this way, themeaning of intercultural communication is summarized, and the dilemma of cross-cultural teaching in foreign languages isdiscussed from the aspects of students' learning motivation. Finally, combined with the current situation of cross-cultural teaching,from the enthusiasm of mobilizing students' language communication, this paper puts forward the strategy of cultivating foreignlanguage classroom intercultural communication ability under the new situation, which provides reference and theoretical basis forimproving university foreign language cross-cultural teaching.

Learner-centered Approaches in Teaching English

The purpose of the learner-centered approaches is to develop students＇ communicative ability. Unfortunately, for decades the English teacher is regarded as an authority who dominates the whole class. In this paper, the author introduces some effective ways on how to shift successfully from a teacher-dominated to a learner-centered English classroom.

Mock Examination of TEM-4: How to Make It Step-Stone for Passing a Real One?

The TEM-4 is important for English majors in colleges,and mock examination is a common mean to increase the passing rate.The studies that focus on the TEM-4 are much more than that of the mock one of TEM-4 even the latter can be regarded as an effective measure from the pedagogical prospective.This study,hence,paid attention to the mock test of TEM-4 by describing and analyzing the data collected from 24 subjects and found the relationship between reading section and multiple-choice section.The study also provided some suggestion of how to make good use of the mock test to improve the language competence of students.

A Survey on Teaching EFL Reading in College

Reading, as an important input of language, is one of the most essential parts in ELT. This paper analyzes the current situation in reading teaching by studying the teaching methods and human factors. With the help of a questionnaire, some problems existing in reading are put forward. The pedagogical implication of the survey as to acquiring communicative competence in reading course is discussed.

Assessment of a Writing Test

With the development of the globalization, English has become an important tool for China to communicate with the world.It has been used nearly in all trades and professions. Therefore, more and more companies urgently need the people who could not only proficient in their own expertise knowledge, but also could use English to handle with the problems occur in their work. In order to recruit such talent people, companies need a test system which can evaluate the people's English language proficiency from different aspects, such as, listening, reading, writing and speaking. This article is addressed on designing a writing test for such purpose.

TEST ANALYSIS OF COLLEGE STUDENTS' CAPABILITY IN ENGLISH COMMUNICATION

While Colleague English Tests (CET) have promoted the college English teaching, they have also led to the extension of test-oriented education and hindered students' capability in communication. To examine the validity of CET Band Four, resumed tests were carried out in sampled students of Grade 2001 one year after they took CET-4 in December, 2002. The control class was examined with the original paper of CET-4 2002, while the treatment class was tested with the same paper in which the multiple-choice questions were all changed into the subjective ones. The test scores were processed by statistical analysis. The results showed that although there was no significant difference between the two classes in CET-4 scores, there was significant difference between them in their experimental test scores. The scores of the treatment class were significantly lower than that of the control class, which proves that CET cannot objectively reflect students' capability in communication, and thus its validity is low. To eliminate the negative backwash effect of CET, suggestions are put forward that CET be devised as a criterion-referenced test, frequency of the test be reduced, subjective questions be increased, and commercialization of the test be avoided.
