1. Introduction In educational theory, as with most things, there exist fashions and trends. Within the field of foreign language teaching the communicative approach is with good reason very fasharable in the west. The name certainly makes it difficult to argue with, who would want to use the ’non-communicative’ approach to teaching a foreign language? The need to communicate in a language is what makes language teaching different from teaching many other subjects. If you study geography, you learn about places, but if you only learn about a language it is not enough.

Later he puts forward some conceptual uncertainties. Finally he comes to the conclusion. The article is well written,and delicately structured. Littlewood has carried out profound research and survey in East Asian countries,however,he didn't give us some measures to solve the problems. Also his conclusion is only a framework and no supporting details,quite general and vague. What I can do is to add some measures to solve the problems in CLT and TBLT in classrooms esp. in China.

Accommodating Communicative Language Teaching in Chinese Secondary Education

English education in China was long dominated by traditional teaching methods focusing on grammatical structures.In spite of the efforts made,studies have revealed that communicative language teaching(CLT)has encountered resistance.An inte?grative literature review is employed to explore the constraining factors that hinder CLT practices,aiming to provide possible ped?agogical approaches that could be taken to better accommodate CLT in the context of Chinese secondary education.The study finds that the pedagogical approach that fits in Chinese context have the following characteristics:combining inductive grammar learning with deductive grammar learning;with switches between learner-centeredness and teacher-centeredness;giving the same emphasis to both linguistic accuracy and fluency;giving teachers more freedom and autonomy.
