Recent studies combined the environmental contexts with residents’ global positioning system(GPS) data to delineate the life circles. This method, however, is constrained by GPS data, and it can only be applied in the GPS surveyed communities. To address this limitation, this study developed a generalizable delineation method without the constraint of behavioral data. According to previous research, the community life circle consists of the walking-accessible range and internal structure. The core task to develop the generalizable method was to estimate the spatiotemporal behavioral demand for each plot of land to acquire the internal structure of the life circle, as the range can be delineated primarily based on environmental data. Therefore, behavioral demand estimation models were established through logistic regression and machine learning techniques, including decision trees and ensemble learning. The model with the lowest error rate was chosen as the final estimation model for each type of land. Finally, we used a community without GPS data as an example to demonstrate the effectiveness of the estimation models and delineation method. This article extends the existing literature by introducing spatiotemporal behavioral demand estimation models, which learn the relationships between environmental contexts, population composition and the existing delineated results based on GPS data to delineate the internal structure of the community life circle without employing behavioral data. Furthermore, the proposed method and delineation results also contributes to facilities adjustments and location selections in life circle planning, people-oriented transformation in urban planning, and activity space estimation of the population in evaluating and improving the urban policies.展开更多

As the three poles are in a constant negotiations, then each of them should prevail over the other two, thus be introduced in the bargaining problem. Bargaining behavior must therefore be defined. The suggested "'win-win-win papakonstantinidis model" (coming from Nash win-win extended approach) tries to find ways for the three-pole bargaining conceptual equilibrium, under conditions, thus maximizing expected utilities for all the involved parts in local decision-making by applying a combination of Descriptive Behavior (DB), Rational Choice, Instrumental Rationality, and the Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) methodologies, then an updating community's behavioral state is expected, thus transforming the technical territory-community perception to a behavioral community perception, by sensitizing its population, towards the "guanxi relations" paradigm.展开更多

Data were collected from questionnaires, Web logs and semi-structured interviews. Descriptive statistics and two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used for data analysis. Findings: Compared with non-community members, community participants had a better understanding of search tasks and were aware of the ways of completing tasks successfully. They did not depend on the information retrieval system when constructing search queries and would adopt diversified cooperation strategies. They were more likely to recommend information to their partners. However, no significant difference was found between subject- based community and interest-based community in CIS practices and user awareness in collaboration. In addition, task difficulty only influenced user preference of issuing queries and confidence of completing search tasks. Research limitations: Our work was limited by the community type we chose and the small group size, which could affect the generalizability of our findings and should be addressed in future studies. Practical implications: The study results will help inform information system designers as they design collaborative systems to facilitate social communication in the information seeking process. Originality/value: Few studies have investigated community participants' information seeking practices. This study provides insights into community-based CIS behavior. The findings will help us understand social interactions among community members during their information seeking process.展开更多

In this paper,it investigated the impact of community structure in online social network on information propagation. A SI (Susceptible-Infected) model based on community structure was proposed. In the SI model, the heterogeneity of user's active time was taken into account. From the results,it was found that the number of links among communities determines the fraction of infected nodes. With the increase of the number of groups G,however, the fraction of infected nodes remains approximately constant. The simulation results will be of great significance: the information will last relatively short for group networks which have either a small or a large number of groups. The results can be useful for optimizing or controlling information, such as propagating rumors in online social networks.展开更多

In MMOG, players organize themselves voluntarily and fulfill collective tasks together. Because each player can join different activities, one player may show different social relationship with others in different activities. In the paper we proposed the incremental label propagation algorithm to search the cliques accurately and quickly. Then we analyzed community structure characteristics on multi-activities. It's shown that the existing guild organization cannot satisfy the requirements of multi-activities in MMOG, which motivates us to devise new community communication channels and platforms in future.展开更多

This paper introduces the extended theory of planned behavior to explore the intentions of residents to participate in heritage preservation, and further explains the influencing factors. Seven historic districts in Tianjin are selected as case studies. The results show that the residents' intentions to preserve heritage are positively influenced by three subjective perception factors of heritage preservation attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control, as well as two objective situational factors of environmental quality of historic district and policy guidance for heritage preservation. Furthermore, the objective situational factors indirectly influence heritage preservation intentions through the subjective perception factors. Based on these findings, this paper puts forward corresponding suggestions to enhance the heritage preservation intentions of community residents.展开更多

This paper explores both categories of individual factors (e.g., values, habits, education, motivation, etc.) and social factors (e.g., institution, infrastructure, encouragement, etc.), to clarify the correlation between them and their sub-factors. Low- carbon campus is a representative type of low-carbon community which is less difficult to build than other communities because university students are well-edu- cated and, to some extent, are more environmental aware and more willing to change their behaviors. The energy- saving and environment-friendly policies implemented on campus are collected and overviewed in this paper. Additionally, the leaders and employees from the related administration departments are interviewed, and the data of electricity amount and water usage are analyzed and a well-designed questionnaire is handed out in a survey. The survey investigates the environmental knowledge, energy use habits, attitude toward low-carbon transformation, comments on the current institution and so on. The results show that different groups of students have varied levels of environmental knowledge, energy use habits, and attitude toward low-carbon campus management. To improve energy conservation and cut carbon emission radically, advices on building low-carbon community are also proposed including professional curriculums of environ- mental protection, economic initiatives, effect manage- ment, good communications, and sound infrastructures and facilities.展开更多

文摘Objective:This study aimed to describe the social determinants of health influencing obesity for the aged in a community context and based on the perspectives of various stakeholders. Methods:This was qualitative content analysis study using data from the focus group, individual in-depth interview, and observation. The study population was domiciled in Pakpoon Village,Mung Dis-trict,Nakhon Si Thammarat Province,a tight-knit settlement typical of most retirement communities.Data were collected through two focus group discussions, direct observation, and in-depth interviews with 19 participants.Respondents represented key community groups:local nurses and public health officers, elderly residents, family caregivers(family members),and village health volunteers. Results:The participants shared similar perspectives about the social determinants of health influencing obesity in the aged, which spanned three themes. These were:1)neighborhood food environment(easy access to unhealthy food,no choice to recruit healthy food);2)social networks influencing obesity(family affects food choices and prohibitions on exercise;belief, and socially imposed body image per-ceptions contributing to obesity in the aged);and 3)knowledge,attitudes,and beliefs behind lifestyle choices that cause obesity in the elderly(lack of awareness, personal attitudes, job and familial duties as barriers to engaging in physical activities;over-consumption behaviors lead to obesity in older people). Conclusion:These three themes were the root causes of obesity in the elderly in Pakpoon’s retirement community. This finding suggests that policymakers and nurses can create healthy environments, both to treat and prevent obesity,by raising awareness in younger generations, providing aging the provision of healthy food choices for older adults, encouraging health care professionals to share knowledge, and by modifying the attitudes and beliefs of both caregivers and older adults.

文摘Online question and answer(Q&A)communities, which allow users to exchange knowledge by asking and answering questions, have become increasingly popular. As a result of user active participation, these communities store overwhelming volumes of information. However, existing related methods are unable to meet community operators’needs for analyzing multi-dimensional Q&A sequences and understanding user behavior. In this paper, collaborating with domain experts in online community,we present a system,VisQAC,which explores the patterns of Q&A sequence and user behavior. In the system,a novel visual design is proposed, which is combined with flexible mapping measures for analyzing critical characteristics of sequence data. Moreover,a timeline visualization method is designed to visualize data with categorical attributes and its correlation can be displayed flexibly by choosing time mode and time granularity. The usefulness and effectiveness of the system are demonstrated with several case studies of VisQAC with community operators based on the Zhihu dataset. Our evaluation shows that VisQAC is beneficial to the understanding of Q&A sequence and associated user behavior.

文摘Online social networking sites ( OSNS) ,as a popular social media platform, have been developed massively for business and research purposes. The results can be useful for optimizing or controlling information, such as propagating rumors in online social networks.
文摘Massive Multiplayer Online Games (MMOG) have attracted millions of players in recent years. It's shown that the existing guild organization cannot satisfy the requirements of multi-activities in MMOG, which motivates us to devise new community communication channels and platforms in future.

文摘Community residents are important stakeholders in preserving historic districts. Based on these findings, this paper puts forward corresponding suggestions to enhance the heritage preservation intentions of community residents.

文摘This paper investigates the effect of factors on Farmers Adaptation Behavior in Water Scarcity Conditions in Rural Communities of Sabzevar,Iran.A survey questionnaire was used for collecting data, the study population was 120 farmers in rural Sabzevar County selected based on the Cochran formula.A questionnaire was designed for the target group for the measurement of on farm adaptation behavior in water scarcity conditions.Research models were drawn using structural equation modeling and the relationships between latent variables and indicators. The findings indicate that there is a significant relationship between awareness and adaptation behavior.Meanwhile, there is a significant relationship among network and media on farmer's perception about water scarcity and their activities toward better management of water in the critical condition. There are also significant relationships among perception and awareness with intention however, intention do not effect on adaptation behavior strongly. In other words, even the that means farmers had information about crisis, they are not able to have not operational plans to confront the water scarcity conditions.
文摘People's social behavior, especially environ- mental behavior, has a great impact on energy consump- tion and carbon emission. To improve energy conservation and cut carbon emission radically, advices on building low-carbon community are also proposed including professional curriculums of environ- mental protection, economic initiatives, effect manage- ment, good communications, and sound infrastructures and facilities.
文摘Afghanistan has made strides in increasing access to health care services since 2001 however it is still battling with poor utilization of services. In order to enhance demand for services a study was conducted to explore answers to the questions on knowledge, attitude and practices of communities in relation to healthcare services. The study design was cross-sectional qualitative spanning in six provinces representing geographical and ethno cultural regions of the country. In each of the six provinces, two districts were selected through mixed sampling technique representing urban-rural population. A total of 48 villages were selected in twelve districts. The study was conducted from September 2009 to March 2010. The study highlights poor heath seeking behavior associated with physical accessibility including high cost of transportation, socio-cultural barriers for women, awareness and trust for public health facilities. The system based issues adds to prevailing access related barriers such as privacy, efficiency and availability within health facilities;lack of female physicians and, aspects of behavior and attitude, and governance issues.
文摘The architect has always been interested in the social and cultural dimensions while creating architecture for people to last, with the help of building science and technology.Science could solve some problems, but is yet to solve many of the problems of urbanization in human history.Perhaps many of the problems can only be solved with careful understanding of human behavior, social intercourse, and economics in relation to the urban environments and organizations, and the natural environment simultaneously. There seemed to be a divide between the way an engineer and an architect think and practice in making a building and a piece of architecture, where the former is highly mathematical, and the latter deals with cultural poetics and a whole range of social and technical issues of which the physics of the environment is but one dimension(Bay and Ong 2006).It may appear natural in this age of environmental crisis and rapid urban development in many cities that the current Ecologically Sustainable Design(ESD)system, which is mainly based on science of the physical world, would be readily accepted by the architect in practice and education. Many of the current ESD guidelines can contribute to the avoidance of a further decay of the earth, thus preventing droughts and floods, etc.,and hope to maintain the status quo of the environment for all the“business as usual”social-economic activities. With more world leaders of the developed world agreeing in principle on the need to address climate change, perhaps a lot more will be done based on the engineering models for ecologically friendly planning, commerce, industry, and design. There could be a cognitive bias3 of overconfidence and systemic error that the predominantly engineering focus to keep climate change at bay will solve the problem of sustainability in various parts of the world. The current limited concept of“ecological”or the“green”design does contribute to sustainability, but is quite limited and not the whole picture of sustainability. The concept of sustainability involves the dynamic and complex balance of environmental(man-made and natural),economic and social dimensions, from many earlier sources including the theory of the Third Ecology(Chermayeff and Tzonis 1971)about social ecology directly related to the man-made urban fabric, and recently, the much accepted pervasive framework of the Brundtland Commission Report 1987:Our Common Future, which included more discussions about the interrelatedness with economic equity and the natural environment.Foremost and ultimately it is about promoting and ensuring social quality of living now and sustaining that into the future, for all nations, the rich and the poor, through solving the matrix of social, economic, and environmental problems. From the perspective of the theory and practice of architecture, this paper discusses the following issues:1.Belief in science, disenchantment, symbol of failure of modern architecture-Pruitt Igoe;2.An anti-thesis to Pruitt Igoe-Bedok Court;3.The cultural concerns and preparametric design thinking process of the architect;4.Architecture,social science, cultural value, social capital, behavior, and ESD;5.A Fourth Ecology,multi-disciplinary research by architects, social scientists, and engineers.
