Comparison of Human Rights Values Between the East and the West——Summary of the 2019 China-Europe Seminar on Human Rights

The 2019 China-Europe Seminar on Human Rights hosted by the China Society for Human Rights Studies and Austria-China Friendship Association was successfully held in Austria on June 21,2019.Through this conference,China,as an important representative of Eastern countries of human rights,demonstrated its fruitful theoretical and practical human rights achievements to European countries.The conference also witnessed lively communication and exchanges on human rights values and the human rights discourse system between China and the West,during which scholars of the East and the West discussed the universality and particularity of human rights,and the evolution of human rights under different historical and cultural values.The conference advocated that the concept of a community with a shared future for human beings proposed by China should be incorporated into human rights governance of sovereign states and the international community.The convergence and integration of the human rights concepts of the East and the West will inevitably lead human rights practices of the East and the West to embark on a new journey.

The nineteenth century was a period when the visual arts,growing in both the West and the East,flourished.It witnessed the beginning of photography,the great innovation which posed questions of the blurred distinctions between art and science.The nineteenth century was also the era of collisions of numerous technology and cultures between the West and the East.

An Academic Summary of the International Seminar on “Comparison of the Human Rights value between the East and the West in Epidemic Prevention and Control”

The international video seminar"Comparison of the Human Rights Values between the East and the West in Epidemic Prevention and Control",hosted by the Institute of Human Rights Law of Huazhong University of Science and Technology,was successfully held on May 30,2020.Against the background of the fight against the CO VID-19 pandemic,this seminar fostered exchanges and discussions on human rights values.As the first country that has contained the epidemic successfully,China shared its experience in the practice of human rights values in epidemic prevention and control,while experts from various countries also shared different human rights values embodied in epidemic prevention and control.This seminar allowed for demonstration of the situation of human rights protection in different countries and regions and exchanges of dilemmas and countermeasures during the specific practice of human rights protection.In the collision of different views and the exchange of multi-dimension dialogues,the seminar called for a sense of a global community of health for all and aimed to foster solidarity and international cooperation for greater contributions to the human rights protection in global epidemic prevention and the development of human rights worldwide.

COMPARISONS OF THE WEST PACIFIC SUBTROPICAL HIGH AND THE SOUTH ASIA HIGH BETWEEN NCEP/NCAR AND ECMWF REANALYSIS DATASETS

Comparisons of the west Pacific subtropical high with the South Asia High are made using the NCEP/NCAR and ECMWF 500 hPa and 100 hPa monthly boreal geopotential height fields for the period 1961-2000. Discrepancies are found for the time prior to 1980. The west Pacific subtropical high in the NCEP/NCAR data is less intense than in ECMWF data before 1980. The range and strength of the west Pacific subtropical high variation described by the NCEP/NCAR data are larger than those depicted by ECMWF data. The same situation appears in the 100-hPa geopotential field. These discoveries suggest that the interdecadal variation of the two systems as shown by the NCEP/NCAR data may not be true. Besides, the South Asia High center in the NCEP/NCAR data is obviously stronger than in the ECMWF data during the periods 1969, 1979-1991 and 1992-1995. Furthermore, the range is larger from 1992 to 1995.

Cultural Conflicts and Compatibility between the East and the West in The Joy Luck Club

Via a study of The Joy Luck Club,Amy Tan's first effort,this essay discusses the cultural conflicts and compatibility between the East and the West as manifested by the conflicts and compatibility between two generations of Chinese Americans in the novel.The paper argues that different living environments,different cultural heritages of the East and the West as well as different values are the main causes of the mother-daughter conflicts in the novel.The paper concludes that these causes could also be regarded as the root of the cultural conflicts between the East and the West in general.More importantly,after a series of efforts,the two generations are in harmony,which stands for the cultural compatibility between the East and the West.

The traditional idea proposes that granites on the east and west coasts of the Pacific Ocean are different. According to field investigations of the geology of the western United States coupled with the authors' long-term studies on granites in South China, granites both in eastern China and in the western United States are similar.

Comparison of Mythological Motifs between Chinese and Western Meteorological Films

Meteorological films generally refer to those that suffer from the influence of natural disasters including meteorological factors,resulting in great violence and casualties.Meteorological disaster films contain a large number of traditional mythological motifs.The meteorological mythology composed of Chinese and Western meteorological mythological motifs is the"meta story"model of modern meteorological films,which establishes the logical starting point of its dissemination.Meanwhile,as a cultural resource,meteorological mythology has also completed the creative transformation in modern times.If the differences between Chinese and Western meteorological films on the motif from the perspective of mythology is compared,it can explore the collective memory and cultural genes of different nations from the original civilization.The motif of punishment in Western meteorological films comes from the collective unconsciousness of human fear of disaster and the collective values of deep deity worship;the motif of disaster management in Chinese meteorological films comes from the realistic tradition of resisting nature and the moralization of myth,which will be a good perspective for comparative study of Chinese and Western meteorological films bearing Chinese and Western cultures.

Hand in Hand East and West to Build a Glorious Gansu——Talk on the cooperation between the East and West of China by Mr.Cui Zhenghua,vice governor of Gansu Province

To implement the CPC CentralCommittee’s strategy of slanting theeconomic construction to the Midand West of China and to further promote thedevelopment and cooperation of economyand trade between the East and West, theEast-West Business and Trade Talks wereheld by the China Council for the Promotionof International Trade (CCPIT). At theconference, Mr. Cui Zhenghua, vice governorof Gansu Province and concurrently chairmanof the Gansu Subcouncil of the CCPIT,delivered a speech on the economiccooperation and development between theEast and West of China.
