We have proposed a methodology to assess the robustness of underground tunnels against potential failure. This involves developing vulnerability functions for various qualities of rock mass and static loading intensities. To account for these variations,we utilized a Monte Carlo Simulation(MCS)technique coupled with the finite difference code FLAC^(3D),to conduct two thousand seven hundred numerical simulations of a horseshoe tunnel located within a rock mass with different geological strength index system(GSIs)and subjected to different states of static loading. To quantify the severity of damage within the rock mass,we selected one stress-based(brittle shear ratio(BSR))and one strain-based failure criterion(plastic damage index(PDI)).Based on these criteria,we then developed fragility curves.Additionally,we used mathematical approximation techniques to produce vulnerability functions that relate the probabilities of various damage states to loading intensities for different quality classes of blocky rock mass. The results indicated that the fragility curves we obtained could accurately depict the evolution of the inner and outer shell damage around the tunnel. Therefore,we have provided engineers with a tool that can predict levels of damages associated with different failure mechanisms based on variations in rock mass quality and in situ stress state. Our method is a numerically developed,multi-variate approach that can aid engineers in making informed decisions about the robustness of underground tunnels. 展开更多

The tensile-shear interactive damage(TSID)model is a novel and powerful constitutive model for rock-like materials. This study proposes a methodology to calibrate the TSID model parameters to simulate sandstone. The basic parameters of sandstone are determined through a series of static and dynamic tests, including uniaxial compression,Brazilian disc, triaxial compression under varying confining pressures, hydrostatic compression, and dynamic compression and tensile tests with a split Hopkinson pressure bar.Based on the sandstone test results from this study and previous research,a step-by-step procedure for parameter calibration is outlined, which accounts for the categories of the strength surface, equation of state(EOS),strain rate effect, and damage. The calibrated parameters are verified through numerical tests that correspond to the experimental loading conditions.Consistency between numerical results and experimental data indicates the precision and reliability of the calibrated parameters. The methodology presented in this study is scientifically sound, straightforward, and essential for improving the TSID model.Furthermore,it has the potential to contribute to other rock constitutive models, particularly new user-defined models. 展开更多

Piezoelectric stages use piezoelectric actuators and flexure hinges as driving and amplifying mechanisms, respectively. These systems have high positioning accuracy and high-frequency responses, and they are widely used in various precision/ultra-precision positioning fields. However, the main challenge with these devices is the inherent hysteresis nonlinearity of piezoelectric actuators, which seriously affects the tracking accuracy of a piezoelectric stage.Inspired by this challenge,in this work,we developed a Hammerstein model to describe the hysteresis nonlinearity of a piezoelectric stage. In particular,in our proposed scheme,a feedback-linearization algorithm is used to eliminate the static hysteresis nonlinearity. In addition,a composite controller based on equivalent-disturbance compensation was designed to counteract model uncertainties and external disturbances. An analysis of the stability of a closed-loop system based on this feedback-linearization algorithm and composite controller was performed, and this was followed by extensive comparative experiments using a piezoelectric stage developed in the laboratory. The experimental results confirmed that the feedback-linearization algorithm and the composite controller offer improved linearization and trajectory-tracking performance. 展开更多

Water effects on the mechanical properties of rocks have been extensively investigated through experiments and numerical models. However, few studies have established a comprehensive link between the microscopic mechanisms of water-related micro-crack and the constitutive behaviors of rocks. In this work,we shall propose an extended micromechanical-based plastic damage model for understanding weakening effect induced by the presence of water between micro-crack’s surfaces on quasi-brittle rocks, based on the Mori-Tanaka homogenization and irreversible thermodynamics framework.Regarding the physical mechanism, water strengthens micro-crack propagation, which induces damage evolution during the pre-and post-stage,and weakens the elastic effective properties of rock matrix. After proposing a special calibration procedure for the determination of model parameters based on the laboratory compression tests, the proposed micromechanical-based model is verified by comparing the model predictions to the experimental results. The model effectively captures the mechanical behaviors of quasibrittle rocks subjected to the weakening effects of water. 展开更多

Several popular time-frequency techniques, including the Wigner-Ville distribution, smoothed pseudo-Wigner-Ville distribution, wavelet transform, synchrosqueezing transform,Hilbert-Huang transform, and Gabor-Wigner transform, are investigated to determine how well they can identify damage to structures. In this work,a synchroextracting transform(SET)based on the short-time Fourier transform is proposed for estimating post-earthquake structural damage. The performance of SET for artificially generated signals and actual earthquake signals is examined with existing methods.Amongst other tested techniques,SET improves frequency resolution to a great extent by lowering the influence of smearing along the time-frequency plane.Hence, interpretation and readability with the proposed method are improved, and small changes in the time-varying frequency characteristics of the damaged buildings are easily detected through the SET method. 展开更多

This paper presents a new finite element model updating method for estimating structural parameters and detecting structural damage location and severity based on the structural responses(output-only data). The method uses the sensitivity relation of transmissibility data through a least-squares algorithm and appropriate normalization of the extracted equations. The proposed transmissibility-based sensitivity equation produces a more significant number of equations than the sensitivity equations based on the frequency response function(FRF),which can estimate the structural parameters with higher accuracy. The abilities of the proposed method are assessed by using numerical data of a two-story two-bay frame model and a plate structure model. In evaluating different damage cases, the number, location, and stiffness reduction of the damaged elements and the severity of the simulated damage have been accurately identified. The reliability and stability of the presented method against measurement and modeling errors are examined using error-contaminated data. The parameter estimation results prove the method’s capabilities as an accurate model updating algorithm. 展开更多

Cells are surrounded by a double-layered phospholipid cell membrane responsible for the isolation of intracellular contents, active regulation of uptake from the extracellular environment, and intercellular connection and communication. These cell membranes must be intact and functionally active for cell survival and biological functioning. Compromised damage repair mechanisms usually result in impaired cellular homeostasis, leading to early or late problems. Chronic myopathies, certain myocardial diseases, aging, and acute or chronic neurodegenerative diseases (like Parkinson and Alzheimer) are directly related to cell membrane damage. This study examined the effect of a cholesterol-loaded nanoparticle (methyl-beta cyclodextrin) or the silk protein sericin on cell membrane and DNA integrity and cell viability in an in vitro cell damage model (frozen-thawed rabbit sperm cells). The cells were stored in liquid nitrogen (-196°C), thawed in small batches, and treated with cholesterol-loaded cyclodextrin or sericin before incubation at 35°C for 4 hours. Cell membrane integrity, DNA damage, and viability rates were assessed immediately after thawing and after the incubation period. The administration of sericin and cholesterol in a cell damage model increased cell survival and reduced DNA damage over a 4-hour post-thaw incubation period, suggesting their potential use as a “first aid” intervention at the cellular level. 展开更多

In this study,a novel equivalent damping ratio model that is suitable for reinforced concrete(RC)structures considering cyclic degradation behavior is developed, and a new equivalent linearization analysis method for implementing the proposed equivalent damping ratio model for use in seismic damage evaluation is presented. To this end,Ibarra’s peak-oriented model, which incorporates an energy-based degradation rule,is selected for representing hysteretic behavior of RC structure, and the optimized equivalent damping for predicting the maximum displacement response is presented by using the empirical method,in which the effect of cyclic degradation is considered. Moreover, the relationship between the hysteretic energy dissipation of the inelastic system and the elastic strain energy of the equivalent linear system is established so that the proposed equivalent linear system can be directly integrated with the Park-Ang seismic model to implement seismic damage evaluation.Due to the simplicity of the equivalent linearization method, the proposed method provides an efficient and reliable way of obtaining comprehensive insight into the seismic performance of RC structures. The verification demonstrates the validity of the proposed method. 展开更多

A study was conducted to analyze the deformation mechanism of strongly weathered quartz schist in the Daliangshan Tunnel, located in the western Transverse Mountain area.A large deformation problem was experienced during the tunnel construction. To mitigate this problem,a support system was designed incorporating negative Poisson ratio(NPR)anchor cables with negative Poisson ratio effect.Physical model experiments, field experiments, and numerical simulation experiments were conducted to investigate the compensation mechanical behavior of NPR anchor cables. The large deformations of soft rocks in the Daliangshan Tunnel are caused by a high ground stress,a high degree of joint fracture development, and a high degree of surrounding rock fragmentation.A compensation mechanics support system combining long and short NPR anchor cables was suggested to provide sufficient counter-support force(approximately 350 kN)for the surrounding rock inside the tunnel.Comparing the NPR anchor cable support system with the original support system used in the Daliangshan tunnel showed that an NPR anchor cable support system, combining cables of 6.3 m and 10.3 m in length, effectively prevented convergence of surrounding rock deformation, and the integrated settlement convergence value remained below 300 mm.This study provides an effective scientific basis for resolving large deformation problems in deeply buried soft rocks in western transverse mountain areas. 展开更多

The conserved DNA damage repair complex,MMS21-SMC5/6(Methyl methane sulfonate 21-Structural maintenance of chromosomes 5/6),has been extensively studied in yeast, animals, and plants. However, its role in phytopathogenic fungi, particularly in the highly destructive rice blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae, remains unknown. In this study,we functionally characterized the homologues of this complex,MoMMS21 and MoSMC5,in M.oryzae.We first demonstrated the importance of DNA damage repair in M.oryzae by showing that the DNA damage inducer phleomycin inhibited vegetative growth,infection-related development and pathogenicity in this fungus.Additionally,we discovered that MoMMS21 and MoSMC5 interacted in the nuclei, suggesting that they also function as a complex in M.oryzae.Gene deletion experiments revealed that both MoMMS21 and MoSMC5 are required for infection-related development and pathogenicity in M.oryzae, while only MoMMS21 deletion affected growth and sensitivity to phleomycin, indicating its specific involvement in DNA damage repair.Overall, our results provide insights into the roles of MoMMS21 and MoSMC5 in M.oryzae, highlighting their functions beyond DNA damage repair. 展开更多

Excavation-induced disturbances in deep tunnels will lead to deterioration of rock properties and formation of excavation damaged zone(EDZ).This excavation damage effect may affect the potential rockburst pit depth.Taking two diversion tunnels of Jinping II hydropower station for example, the relationship between rockburst pit depth and excavation damage effect is first surveyed. The results indicate that the rockburst pit depth in tunnels with severe damage to rock masses is relatively large.Subsequently, the excavation-induced damage effect is characterized by disturbance factor D based on the Hoek-Brown criterion and wave velocity method. It is found that the EDZ could be further divided into a high-damage zone(HDZ)with D=1 and weak-damage zone(WDZ),and D decays from one to zero linearly. For this,a quantitative evaluation method for potential rockburst pit depth is established by presenting a three-element rockburst criterion considering rock strength, geostress and disturbance factor. The evaluation results obtained by this method match well with actual observations. In addition, the weakening of rock mass strength promotes the formation and expansion of potential rockburst pits. The potential rockburst pit depth is positively correlated with HDZ and WDZ depths, and the HDZ depth has a significant contribution to the potential rockburst pit depth. 展开更多

To investigate the specific creep behavior of ultra-deep buried salt during oil and gas exploitation,a set of triaxial creep experiments was conducted at elevated temperatures with constant axial pressure and unloading confining pressure conditions.Experimental results show that the salt sample deforms more significantly with the increase of applied temperature and deviatoric loading. The accelerated creep phase is not occurring until the applied temperature reaches 130℃,and higher temperature is beneficial to the occurrence of accelerated creep. To describe the specific creep behavior,a novel three-dimensional(3D)creep constitutive model is developed that incorporates the thermal and mechanical variables into mechanical elements.Subsequently, the standard particle swarm optimization(SPSO)method is adopted to fit the experimental data, and the sensibility of key model parameters is analyzed to further illustrate the model function. As a result, the model can accurately predict the creep behavior of salt under the coupled thermo-mechanical effect in deep-buried condition.Based on the research results, the creep mechanical behavior of wellbore shrinkage is predicted in deep drilling projects crossing salt layer, which has practical implications for deep rock mechanics problems. 展开更多

In order to evaluate the performance of deep geological disposal of radioactive waste,an underground research laboratory(URL)was constructed by Andra in the Callovo-Oxfordian(COx)claystone formation at the Meuse/Haute-Marne(MHM).The construction of URL induced the excavation damage of host formations, and the ventilation in the galleries desaturated the host formation close to the gallery wall. Moreover,it is expected that the mechanical behaviour of COx claystone is time-dependent.This study presents a constitutive model developed to describe the viscoplastic behaviour of unsaturated and damaged COx claystone. In this model, the unsaturation effect is considered by adopting the Bishop effective stress and the van Genuchten(VG)water retention model. In terms of the viscoplastic behaviour, the nonstationary flow surface(NSFS)theory for unsaturated soils is used with consideration of the coupled effects of strain rate and suction on the yield stress.A progressive hardening law is adopted.Meanwhile,a non-associated flow rule is used, which is similar to that in Barcelona basic model(BBM).In addition,to describe the damage effect induced by suction change and viscoplastic loading,a damage function is defined based on the crack volume proportion. This damage function contains two variables:unsaturated effective stress and viscoplastic volumetric strain, with the related parameters determined based on the mercury intrusion porosimetry(MIP)tests. For the model validation, different tests on COx claystone under different loading paths are simulated.Comparisons between experimental and simulated results indicated that the present model is able to well describe the viscoplastic behaviour of damaged COx claystone, including swelling/shrinkage,triaxial extension and compression, and triaxial creep. 展开更多

In the fiber winding process, strong disturbance, uncertainty, strong coupling, and fiber friction complicate the winding constant tension control. In order to effectively reduce the influence of these problems on the tension output, this paper proposed a tension fluctuation rejection strategy based on feedforward compensation. In addition to the bias harmonic curve of the unknown state, the tension fluctuation also contains the influence of bounded noise.A tension fluctuation observer(TFO)is designed to cancel the uncertain periodic signal,in which the frequency generator is used to estimate the critical parameter information. Then, the fluctuation signal is reconstructed by a third-order auxiliary filter. The estimated signal feedforward compensates for the actual tension fluctuation.Furthermore,a time-varying parameters fractional-order PID controller(TPFOPID)is realized to attenuate the bounded noise in the fluctuation. Finally,TPFOPID is enhanced by TFO and applied to control a tension control system considering multi-source disturbances. The stability of the method is analyzed by using the Lyapunov theorem. Finally, numerical simulations verify that the proposed scheme improves the tracking ability and robustness of the system in response to tension fluctuations. 展开更多

For the analysis of the formation damage caused by the compound function of drilling fluid and fracturing fluid, the prediction method for dynamic invasion depth of drilling fluid is developed considering the fracture extension due to shale minerals erosion by oil-based drilling fluid. With the evaluation for the damage of natural and hydraulic fractures caused by mechanical properties weakening of shale fracture surface, fracture closure and rock powder blocking, the formation damage pattern is proposed with consideration of the compound effect of drilling fluid and fracturing fluid. The formation damage mechanism during drilling and completion process in shale reservoir is revealed, and the protection measures are raised. The drilling fluid can deeply invade into the shale formation through natural and induced fractures, erode shale minerals and weaken the mechanical properties of shale during the drilling process. In the process of hydraulic fracturing, the compound effect of drilling fluid and fracturing fluid further weakens the mechanical properties of shale, results in fracture closure and rock powder shedding, and thus induces stress-sensitive damage and solid blocking damage of natural/hydraulic fractures. The damage can yield significant conductivity decrease of fractures, and restrict the high and stable production of shale oil and gas wells. The measures of anti-collapse and anti-blocking to accelerate the drilling of reservoir section, forming chemical membrane to prevent the weakening of the mechanical properties of shale fracture surface, strengthening the plugging of shale fracture and reducing the invasion range of drilling fluid, optimizing fracturing fluid system to protect fracture conductivity are put forward for reservoir protection. 展开更多

Ferritic/martensitic(F/M)steel is widely used as a structural material in thermal and nuclear power plants. However,it is susceptible to intergranular damage, which is a critical issue, under service conditions. In this study,to improve the resistance to intergranular damage of F/M steel,a thermomechanical process(TMP)was employed to achieve a grain boundary engineering(GBE)microstructure in F/M steel P92.The TMP,including cold-rolling thickness reduction of 6%,9%,and 12%,followed by austenitization at 1323 K for 40 min and tempering at 1053 K for 45 min,was applied to the as-received(AR)P92 steel. The prior austenite grain(PAG)size, prior austenite grain boundary character distribution(GBCD),and connectivity of prior austenite grain boundaries(PAGBs)were investigated.Compared to the AR specimen, the PAG size did not change significantly. The fraction of coincident site lattice boundaries(CSLBs,3≤Σ≤29)and Σ3^(n) boundaries along PAGBs decreased with increasing reduction ratio because the recrystallization fraction increased with increasing reduction ratio. The PAGB connectivity of the 6%deformed specimen slightly deteriorated compared with that of the AR specimen. Moreover, potentiodynamic polarization studies revealed that the intergranular damage resistance of the studied steel could be improved by increasing the fraction of CSLBs along the PAGBs,indicating that the TMP,which involves low deformation, could enhance the intergranular damage resistance. 展开更多

As one of the most common occurring geological landforms in deep rock formations, the dynamic mechanical properties of layered composite rock bodies under impact loading have been widely studied by scholars. To study the dynamic properties of soft and hard composite rocks with different thickness ratios, this paper utilizes cement, quartz sand and gypsum powder to construct soft and hard composite rock specimens and utilizes a combination of indoor tests, numerical calculations, and theoretical analyses to investigate the mechanical properties of soft and hard composite rock bodies. The test results reveal that:(1) When the proportion of hard rock increases from 20% to 50%, the strength of the combined rock body increases by 69.14 MPa and 87 MPa when the hard rock face and soft rock face are loaded, respectively;however, when the proportion of hard rock is the same, the compressive strength of the hard rock face impact is 9%-17% greater than that of the soft rock face impact;(2) When a specimen of soft and hard combined rock body is subjected to impact loading, the damage mode involves mixed tension and shear damage, and the cracks generally first appear at the ends of the specimen, then develop on the laminar surface from the impact surface, and finally end in the overall damage of the soft rock part. The development rate and the total number of cracks in the same specimen when the hard rock face is impacted are significantly greater than those when the soft rock face is impacted;(3) By introducing Weibull’s statistical strength theory to establish the damage variables of soft-hard combined rock bodies, combined with the DP strength criterion, the damage model and the Kelvin body are concatenated to obtain a statistical damage constitutive model, which can better fit the full stress-strain curve of soft-hard combined rock body specimens under a single impact load. 展开更多

Zirconia ceramics have become increasingly widely used in recent years and are favored by relevant enterprises. From the traditional dental field to aerospace, parts manufacturing has been used, but there is limited research on the deformation and damage process of zirconia ceramics. This article analyzes the acoustic emission characteristics of each stage of ceramic damage from the perspective of acoustic emission, and explores its deformation process characteristics from multiple perspectives such as time domain, frequency, and EWT modal analysis. It is concluded that zirconia ceramics exhibit higher brittleness and acoustic emission strength than alumina ceramics, and when approaching the fracture, it tends to generate lower frequency acoustic emission signals. 展开更多

When simulating the process from elastic–plastic deformation, damage to failure in a metal structure collision,it is necessary to use the large shell element due to the calculation efficiency, but this would affect the accuracy of damage evolution simulation. The compensation algorithm adjusting failure strain according to element size is usually used in the damage model to deal with the problem. In this paper,a new nonlinear compensation algorithm between failure strain and element size was proposed, which was incorporated in the damage model GISSMO(Generalized incremental stress state dependent damage model)to characterize ductile fracture. And associated material parameters were calibrated based on tensile experiments of aluminum alloy specimens with notches.Simulation and experimental results show that the new compensation algorithm significantly reduces the dependence of element size compared with the constant failure strain model and the damage model with the linear compensation algorithm.During the axial splitting process of a circular tubular structure, the new compensation algorithm keeps the failure prediction errors low over the stress states ranging from shear to biaxial tension, and achieves the objective prediction of the damage evolution process. This study demonstrates how the compensation algorithm resolves the contradiction between large element size and fracture prediction accuracy, and this facilitates the use of the damage model in ductile fracture prediction for engineering structures. 展开更多
