We investigate how dynamical behaviours of complex motor networks depend on the Newman-Watts small-world (NWSW) connections. Network elements are described by the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) with the values of parameters at which each individual PMSM is stable. It is found that with the increase of connection probability p, the motor in networks becomes periodic and falls into chaotic motion as p further increases. These phenomena imply that NWSW connections can induce and enhance chaos in motor networks. The possible mechanism behind the action of NWSW connections is addressed based on stability theory. 展开更多

The heterogeneity of the network is controlled by the number of hubs. It is found that the moderate heterogeneity of the network can promote the cooperation best. Besides, we study how the hubs affect the evolution of cooperative behaviours of the heterogeneous Newman-Watts small-world network. Simulation results show that both the initial states of hubs and the connections between hubs can play an important role. Our work gives a further insight into the effect of hubs on the heterogeneous networks. 展开更多

US flight network, composed of 285airports(nodes)and 3 971flights(edges)is studied.A static network model and a dynamic network model of US flight network are established.Firstly, the characteristics of static network are analyzed. One finds that such a network is a″small-world″and″scale-free″network.The cumulative degree distributions of weighted network and unweighted network follow″Double Pareto Law″.And the degree exponent of weighted network is smaller than unweighted network. The average shortest-path length is 2.368 9,which is smaller than previous results. The clustering coefficient of unweighted network is 0.637 1and of weighted network is 0.653 6,which are both bigger than previous results. The correlation of degree, unweighted clustering coefficient and weighted clustering coefficient are also discussed.Secondly, the characteristics of dynamic network are studied. The structure of flight network is changing as the time goes by on a day.In rush hours, the network′s character of″scale-free″is stronger than other times. And then the relationships of topological structures and congestion effects are addressed. 展开更多

In this paper, we propose a simple model that can generate small-world network with community structure. The network is introduced as a tunable community organization with parameter r, which is directly measured by the ratio of inter- to intra-community connectivity, and a smaller r corresponds to a stronger community structure. The structure properties, including the degree distribution, clustering, the communication efficiency and modularity are also analysed for the network. In addition, by using the Kuramoto model, we investigated the phase synchronization on this network, and found that increasing the fuzziness of community structure will markedly enhance the network synchronizability; however, in an abnormal region (r ≤ 0.001), the network has even worse synchronizability than the case of isolated communities (r = 0). Furthermore, this network exhibits a remarkable synchronization behaviour in topological scales: the oscillators of high densely interconnected communities synchronize more easily, and more rapidly than the whole network. 展开更多

Networks haven been widely used to understand the spread of infectious disease. This study examines the properties of small-world networks in modeling infectious disease on campus. Two different small-world models are developed and the behaviors of infectious disease in the models are observed through numerical simulations. The results show that the behavior pattern of infectious disease in a small-world network is different from those in a regular network or a random network. The spread of the infectious disease increases as the proportion of long-distance connections p increasing, which indicates that reducing the contact among people is an effective measure to control the spread of infectious disease. The probability of node position exchange in a network(p2)had no significant effect on the spreading speed, which suggests that reducing human mobility in closed environments does not help control infectious disease. However, the spreading speed is proportional to the number of shared nodes(s),which means reducing connections between different groups and dividing students into separate sections will help to control infectious disease. In the end,the simulating speed of the small-world network is tested and the quadratic relationship between simulation time and the number of nodes may limit the application of the SW network in areas with large populations. 展开更多

Global semantic structures of two large semantic networks, HowNet and WordNet, are analyzed. It is found that they are both complex networks with features of small-world and scale-free, but with special properties. Exponents of power law degree distribution of these two networks are between 1.0 and 2. 0, different from most scale-free networks which have exponents near 3.0. Coefficients of degree correlation are lower than 0, similar to biological networks. The BA (Barabasi-Albert) model and other similar models cannot explain their dynamics. Relations between clustering coefficient and node degree obey scaling law, which suggests that there exist self-similar hierarchical structures in networks. The results suggest that structures of semantic networks are influenced by the ways we learn semantic knowledge such as aggregation and metaphor. 展开更多

We investigate the topological characteristics of complex networks as exemplified by the urban public traffic network (UPTN) in Chinese top-ten biggest cities. It is found that the UPTNs have small world behaviour, by the examination of their topological parameters. The quantitative analysis of the transport efficiency of the UPTNs reveals their higher local efficiency El and lower global efficiency Eg, which coincide well with the status quo of those Chinese cities still at their developing stage. Furthermore, the topological properties of efficiency in the UPTNs are also examined, and the findings indicate that, on the one hand, the UPTNs show robustness to random attacks and frangibility to malicious attacks on a global scale; on the other hand, the interrelation between UPTN efficiency and network motifs deserves our attention. The motifs which interrelate the UPTN efficiency are always triangular-formed patterns, e.g. motifs ID 238, ID 174 and ID 102, etc. 展开更多

A continuum opinion dynamic model is presented based on two rules. The first one considers the mobilities of the individuals, the second one supposes that the individuals update their opinions independently. The results of the model indicate that the bounded confidence εc, separating consensus and incoherent states, of a scale-free network is much smaller than the one of a lattice. If the system can reach the consensus state, the sum of all individuals' opinion change Oc(t) quickly decreases in an exponential form, while if it reaches the incoherent state finally, Oc(t) decreases slowly and has the punctuated equilibrium characteristic. 展开更多

In this paper we, firstly, classify the complex networks in which the nodes are of the lifetime distribution. Secondly, in order to study complex networks in terms of queuing system and homogeneous Markov chain, we establish the relation between the complex networks and queuing system, providing a new way of studying complex networks. Thirdly, we prove that there exist stationary degree distributions of M-G-P network, and obtain the analytic expression of the distribution by means of Markov chain theory. We also obtain the average path length and clustering coefficient of the network. The results show that M-G-P network is not only scale-free but also of a small-world feature in proper conditions. 展开更多

We investigate the factors that affect synchronizability of coupled oscillators on scale-free networks. Using the memory Tabu search (MTS) algorithm, we improve the eigen-ratio Q of a coupling matrix by edge intercrossing. The numerical results show that the synchronizatlon-improved scale-free networks should have distinctive both small average distance and larger clustering coefficient, which are consistent with some real-world networks. Moreover, the synchronizability-improved networks demonstrate the disassortative coefficient. 展开更多

We investigate the relationship between the structure and the synchronizability of scale-free networks in geographical space. With an optimization approach, the numerical results indicate that when the network synchronizability is improved, the geographical distance becomes larger while the maximal load decreases. Thus the maximal betweenness can be a candidate factor that affects the network synchronizability both in topological space and in geographical space. 展开更多

We propose a weighted evolving network model in which the underlying topological structure is still driven by the degree according to the preferential attachment rule while the weight assigned to the newly established edges is dependent on the degree in a nonlinear form. By varying the parameter a that controls the function determining the assignment of weight, a wide variety of power-law behaviours of the total weight distributions as well as the diversity of the weight distributions of edges are displayed. Variation of correlation and heterogeneity in the network is illustrated as well. 展开更多

The complexity is regulated and controlled by homeostasis, which is the balance of multiple opposing influences. The environmental effects finally guide the self-organized structure. The living systems are open, dynamic structures performing random, stationary, stochastic, self-organizing processes. The self-organizing procedure is defined by the spatial-temporal fractal structure, which is self-similar both in space and time. The system’s complexity appears in its energetics, which tries the most efficient use of the available energies;for that, it organizes various well-connected networks. The controller of environmental relations is the Darwinian selection on a long-time scale. The energetics optimize the healthy processes tuned to the highest efficacy and minimal loss (minimalization of the entropy production). The organism is built up by morphogenetic rules and develops various networks from the genetic level to the organism. The networks have intensive crosstalk and form a balance in the Nash equilibrium, which is the homeostatic state in healthy conditions. Homeostasis may be described as a Nash equilibrium, which ensures energy distribution in a “democratic” way regarding the functions of the parts in the complete system. Cancer radically changes the network system in the organism. Cancer is a network disease. Deviation from healthy networking appears at every level, from genetic (molecular) to cells, tissues, organs, and organisms. The strong proliferation of malignant tissue is the origin of most of the life-threatening processes. The weak side of cancer development is the change of complex information networking in the system, being vulnerable to immune attacks. Cancer cells are masters of adaptation and evade immune surveillance. This hiding process can be broken by electromagnetic nonionizing radiation, for which the malignant structure has no adaptation strategy. Our objective is to review the different sides of living complexity and use the knowledge to fight against cancer. 展开更多

The theory of complex networks was used to classify public transport networks into public transportation route networks, public transportation transfer networks, and bus station networks. The practical significance of the network parameters was then analyzed. The public transport networks in Langfang, Jining, and Dalian were then chosen as specific research cases. The results show that the public transportation networks have the characteristics of complex networks, In addition, the urban transportation network parameters all significantly affect the accessibility, convenience, and terrorist security capability of the urban public transportation network.
