Its effectiveness has been observed in many countries across the globe, where it is a traditional practice, and is now being encouraged across the African continent. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of FMNR on floristic Composition, Vegetation Structure, and Regeneration Status of woody Plant Species in the severely degraded Central Rift, Kenya. The study systematically assessed how FMNR influenced species composition, vegetation structure and regeneration status from two sample plots involved in FMNR practices. Transect lines and quadrats methods were utilized to collect data, specifically regarding the floristic composition, vegetation structure, and regeneration status of woody plant species. Quadrats and sub-quadrats of varying sizes (10 m by 10 m, 5 m by 5 m, and 1 m by 1 m) were nested along the transect lines for data collection. Furthermore, measurements of tree growth and development, including root collar diameter, diameter at breast height (D130) and heights within the study blocks, were taken. The data was then analyzed using R-software. Results showed a marked progressive increase in numbers of trees, saplings, seedlings, shrubs and herbs in all FMNR sites and reductions in all non-FMNR sites. The study advocates for widespread promotion of the FMNR practice both as an environmental conservation and restoration strategy.展开更多

The result showed that in the TiAl alloy,α2 lamellae thinned and were broken down, and became discontinuous with increasing aging time. The decomposition ofα2 lamella toγ which was characterized by parallel decomposition and breakdown ofα2 lamellae led to the degradation of the lamellar structure. While in the composite, lamellar structure remained relatively stable even after aging at 900 ℃ for 100 h. No breakdown ofα2 lamellae except parallel decomposition and precipitation of fine nitride particles was observed. The better microstructural stability of the composite was mainly attributed to the precipitation of Ti2AlN particles at theα2/γ interface which played an important role in retarding the coarsening of lamellar microstructure in the matrix of composite.展开更多

The current increase in the speed of natural-origin structure growth may be linked to their superior mechanical properties and environmental resilience. Biological composite structures with helicoidal schemes and designs have remarkable capacities to absorb impact energy and withstand damage. However, there is a dearth of extensive study on the influence of fiber redirection and reorientation inside the matrix of a helicoid structure on its mechanical performance and reactivity. The present study aimed to explore the static and transient responses of a bio-inspired helicoid laminated composite(B-iHLC) shell under the influence of an explosive load using an isomorphic method. The structural integrity of the shell is maintained by a viscoelastic basis known as the Pasternak foundation, which encompasses two coefficients of stiffness and one coefficient of damping. The equilibrium equations governing shell dynamics are obtained by using Hamilton's principle and including the modified first-order shear theory, therefore obviating the need to employ a shear correction factor. The paper's model and approach are validated by doing numerical comparisons with respected publications. The findings of this study may be used in the construction of military and civilian infrastructure in situations when the structure is subjected to severe stresses that might potentially result in catastrophic collapse. The findings of this paper serve as the foundation for several other issues, including geometric optimization and the dynamic response of similar mechanical structures.展开更多

The study advocates for widespread promotion of the FMNR practice both as an environmental conservation and restoration strategy.
文摘The Long Museum, with its distinctive T-shaped“umbrella-vault”structure,offers a rich array of spatial experiences. This article delves into space from both structural and compositional perspectives. As the construction mediator, the umbrella vault embodies the consistency of construction and implies the causality of the surface.Presented as an element, the space flows freely, showing diverse fields and order. In terms of the liberation of its meaning, the space offers static perception and dynamic experience, creating a rich exhibition atmosphere. As a distinct entity, the umbrella-vault presents the physical nature, and the dialogue between the Long Museum and the city makes it a museum of art for the people.

文摘To ensure safe and economical backfill mining, the mechanical response of the backfill–rock interaction system needs to be understood. The numerical investigation of the mechanical behavior of backfill–rock composite structure(BRCS)under triaxial compression, which includes deformation, failure patterns, strength characteristics, and acoustic emission(AE)evolution, was proposed. The models used in the tests have one rough interface, two cement–iron tailings ratios(CTRs),four interface angles(IAs),and three confining pressures(CPs).Results showed that the deformation, strength characteristics, and failure patterns of BRCS under triaxial compression depend on IA,CP,and CTR.The stress–strain curves of BRCS under triaxial compression could be divided into five stages, namely, compaction, elasticity, yield, strain softening, and residual stress. The relevant AE counts have corresponding relationships with different stages. The triaxial compressive strengths of composites increase linearly with the increase of the CP.Furthermore, the CP stress strengthening effect occurs. When the IAs are45°and 60°,the failure areas of composites appear in the interface and backfill. When the IAs are 75°and 90°,the failure areas of composites appear in the backfill, interface, and rock. Moreover, the corresponding failure modes yield the combined shear failure. The research results provide the basis for further understanding of the stability of the BRCS.

文摘As a typical energetic composite,polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE)/aluminum(Al)has been widely applied in explosives, pyrotechnics, and propellants due to its ultra-high energy density and intense exothermic reaction. In this work, the radial gradient(RG)structure of PTFE/Al cylinders with three different PTFE morphologies(200 nm and 5μm particles and 5μm fiber)and content changes are prepared by 3D printing technology. The effect of radial gradient structure on the pressure output of PTFE/Al has been studied.Compared with the morphology change of PTFE,the change of component content in the gradient structure has an obvious effect on the pressure output of the PTFE/Al cylinder.Furthermore, the relationships of the morphology, content of PTFE and the combustion reaction of the PTFE/Al cylinder reveal that the cylinder shows a more complex flame propagation process than others. These results could provide a strategy to improve the combustion and pressure output of PTFE/Al.

文摘A backfilling body-coal pillar-backfilling body(BPB)structure formed by pillar-side cemented paste backfilling can bear overburden stress and ensure safe mining. However, the failure response of BPB composite samples must be investigated. This paper examines the deformation characteristics and damage evolution of six types of BPB composite samples using a digital speckle correlation method under uniaxial compression conditions.A new damage evolution equation was established on the basis of the input strain energy and dissipated strain energy at the peak stress. The prevention and control mechanisms of the backfilling body on the coal pillar instability were discussed. The results show that the deformation localization and macroscopic cracks of the BPB composite samples first appeared at the coal-backfilling interface, and then expanded to the backfilling elements, ultimately appearing in the coal elements. The elastic strain energy in the BPB composite samples reached a maximum at the peak stress, whereas the dissipated energy continued to accumulate and increase. The damage evolution curve and equation agree well with the test results, providing further understanding of instability prevention and the control mechanisms of the BPB composite samples. The restraining effect on the coal pillar was gradually reduced with decreasing backfilling body element's volume ratio, and the BPB composite structure became more vulnerable to failure. This research is expected to guide the design, stability monitoring, instability prevention, and control of BPB structures in pillar-side cemented paste backfilling mining.

文摘In order to solve the thickness dependence of plasma absorption of electromagnetic waves and further reduce the backward radar scattering cross section(RCS)of the target,we designed a novel composite structure of a metasurface and plasma.A metasurface with three absorption peaks is designed by means of an equivalent circuit based on an electromagnetic resonance type metamaterial absorber. The reflection and absorption of the composite structure are numerically and experimentally verified. The finite integration method was used to simulate a composite structure of finite size to obtain the RCS.The experimental measurements of electromagnetic wave reflection were conducted by a vector network analyzer(Keysight N5234A)and horn antennas, etc. The research showed that the absorption capacity of this composite structure was substantially improved compared to either the plasma or the metasurface, and it is more convenient for application due to its low plasma thickness requirement and easy fabrication.

文摘BaTiO_(3)/TiO_(2)@polypyrrole(PPy)composites with hollow multishelled structure(HoMS)were constructed to enhance the electromagnetic wave absorbing properties of BaTiO_(3)-based absorbing material.BaTiO_(3)/TiO_(2)HoMSs were prepared by hydrothermal crystallization using TiO_(2)Ho MSs as template.Then,FeCl3 was introduced to initiate the oxidative polymerization of pyrrole monomer, forming BaTiO_(3)/TiO_(2)@PPy HoMSs successfully. The electromagnetic wave absorbing properties of BaTiO_(3)/TiO_(2)HoMSs and BaTiO_(3)/TiO_(2)@PPy Ho MSs with different shell number were investigated using a vector network analyzer. The results indicate that BaTiO_(3)/TiO_(2)@PPy HoMSs exhibit improved microwave absorption compared with BaTiO_(3)/TiO_(2)HoMSs.In particular,tripled-shelled BaTiO_(3)/TiO_(2)@PPy HoMS has the most excellent absorbing performance. The best reflection loss can reach up to-21.80 dB at 13.34 GHz with a corresponding absorber thickness of only 1.3 mm,and the qualified absorption bandwidth of tripled-shelled BaTiO_(3)/TiO_(2)@PPy HoMS is up to 4.2 GHz.This work paves a new way for the development of high-performance composite microwave absorbing materials.

文摘Carbon/carbon composites modified by NiAl alloy were prepared using vacuum reactive melt infiltration methods with NiAl and titanium mixed powders as raw materials. The microstructures were investigated by scanning electron microscopy. The fracture behavior, infiltration and oxidation mechanism were further discussed. The results indicated that NiAl alloy exhibited good wettability on the C/C preform because a TiC reaction layer formed at the interface. Multi-layer(PyC/TiC/NiAl+TiC) coating evenly and compactly distributed on the surface of the carbon fiber in tubular form. The penetration depth of molten NiAl alloys depended on the reaction between the PyC and titanium. The impact fracture was inclined to along the interface between the NiAl permeability layer and C/C matrix. Al_2TiO_5 and TiO_2 formed on the surface, while the interior multi-layer tubular structure partially remained after oxidation at 1773 K for 30 min.
文摘An effective optimization method for the shape/sizing design of composite wing structures is presented with satisfying weight-cutting results. After decoupling, a kind of two-layer cycled optimization strategy suitable for these integrated shape/sizing optimization is obtained. The uniform design method is used to provide sample points, and approximation models for shape design variables. And the results of sizing optimization are construct- ed with the quadratic response surface method (QRSM). The complex method based on QRSM is used to opti- mize the shape design variables and the criteria method is adopted to optimize the sizing design variables. Compared with the conventional method, the proposed algorithm is more effective and feasible for solving complex composite optimization problems and has good efficiency in weight cutting.

文摘Microstructure stability of in situ synthesized Ti2AlN/Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb composite during aging at 900 ℃ was investigated by XRD, OM and TEM, and the unreinforced Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb alloy was also examined for comparison. The better microstructural stability of the composite was mainly attributed to the precipitation of Ti2AlN particles at theα2/γ interface which played an important role in retarding the coarsening of lamellar microstructure in the matrix of composite.

文摘In this paper, the design, manufacture and testing of an origami protective shield with a supporting frame structure are presented. It consists of an origami shield surface and a deployable supporting frame structure that needs to be portable and sufficiently stiff.First, for the design of the shield surface,a threestage origami crease pattern is developed to reduce the shield size in the folded state. The shield surface consists of several stiff modular panels and layered with flexible fabric. The modular panels are made of a multi-layer composite where a ceramic layer is made of small pieces to improve durability as those small pieces enable restriction of crack propagation. Then, the supporting frame structure is designed as a chain-of-bars structure in order to fold into a highly compact state as a bundle of bars and deploy in sequence. Thus,a feature-driven topology structural optimization method preserving component sequence is developed where the inter-dependence of sub-structures is taken into account.A bar with semi-circular ends is used as a basic design feature. The positions of the bar’s end points are treated as design variables and the width of the bars is kept constant. Then,a constraint on the total length of the chain of bars is introduced. Finally, the modular panels made of multi-layer composite and the full-scale prototype of the origami shield are fabricated and tested to verify the bullet-proof performance.

文摘The abalone shell,a composite material whose cross-section is composed of inorganic and organic layers, has high strength and toughness.Inspired by the abalone shell, several multi-layer composite plates with different layer sequences and thicknesses are studied as bullet-proof material in this paper. To investigate the ballistic performance of this multi-layer structure, the complete characterization model and related material parameters of large deformation, failure and fracture ofAl_(2)O_(3)ceramics andCarbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer(CFRP)are studied.Then,3D finite element models of the proposed composite plates with different layer sequences and thicknesses impacted by a 12.7 mm armor-piercing incendiary(API)are built using Abaqus to predict failure. The simulation results show that the CFRP/Al2O3 ceramic/Ultrahigh Molecular Weight Polyethylene(UHMWPE)/CFRP(1 mm/4 mm/4 mm/1 mm)composite is the optimized stack of layers. The simulation results under specified layer sequence and thickness have a reasonable correlation with the experimental results and reflect the failure and fracture of the multi-layer composite protective armor.
文摘Investigating natural-inspired applications is a perennially appealing subject for scientists. The findings of this paper serve as the foundation for several other issues, including geometric optimization and the dynamic response of similar mechanical structures.

文摘Solid-state lithium metal batteries(SSLMBs)show great promise in terms of high-energy-density and high-safety performance. However, there is an urgent need to address the compatibility of electrolytes with high-voltage cathodes/Li anodes, and to minimize the electrolyte thickness to achieve highenergy-density of SSLMBs.Herein,we develop an ultrathin(12.6μm)asymmetric composite solid-state electrolyte with ultralight areal density(1.69 mg cm^(−2))for SSLMBs.The electrolyte combining a garnet(LLZO)layer and a metal organic framework(MOF)layer, which are fabricated on both sides of the polyethylene(PE)separator separately by tape casting. The PE separator endows the electrolyte with flexibility and excellent mechanical properties. The LLZO layer on the cathode side ensures high chemical stability at high voltage. The MOF layer on the anode side achieves a stable electric field and uniform Li flux, thus promoting uniform Li^(+)deposition. Thanks to the well-designed structure, the Li symmetric battery exhibits an ultralong cycle life(5000 h),and high-voltage SSLMBs achieve stable cycle performance. The assembled pouch cells provided a gravimetric/volume energy density of 344.0 Wh kg^(−1)/773.1 Wh L^(−1).This simple operation allows for large-scale preparation, and the design concept of ultrathin asymmetric structure also reveals the future development direction of SSLMBs.

文摘Primary forests are spatially diverse terrestrial ecosystems with unique characteristics, being naturally regenerative and heterogeneous, which supports the stability of their carbon storage through the accumulation of live and dead biomass.Yet,little is known about the interactions between biomass stocks, tree genus diversity and structure across a temperate montane primary forest. Here,we investigated the relationship between tree structure(variability in basal area and tree size),genus-level diversity(abundance, tree diversity)and biomass stocks in temperate primary mountain forests across Central and Eastern Europe. We used inventory data from726 permanent sample plots from mixed beech and spruce across the Carpathian Mountains. We used nonlinear regression to analyse the spatial variability in forest biomass, structure, and genus-level diversity and how they interact with plot-level tree age, disturbances, temperature and altitude. We found that the combined effects of genus and structural indices were important for addressing the variability in biomass across different spatial scales.Local processes in disturbance regimes and uneven tree age support forest hete rogeneity and the accumulation of live and dead biomass through the natural regeneration, growth and decay of the forest ecosystem.Structural complexities in basal area index, supporte d by genus-level abundance, positively influence total biomass stocks, which was modulated by tree age and disturbances.Spruce forests showed higher tree density and basal area than mixed beech forests, though mixed beech still contributes significantly to biomass across landscapes.Forest heterogeneity was strongly influenced by complexities in forest composition(tree genus diversity, structure). We addressed the importance of primary forests as stable carbon stores, achieved through structure and diversity.Safeguarding such ecosystems is critical for ensuring the stability of the primary forest, carbon store and biodiversity into the future.
