On Foreign Language Creation and Rootless Back Translation -A Case Study of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan

With Adaptation Theory as its theoretical basis, this research makes comparison between Lisa See＇s original version of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan and Xin Yuanjie＇s Chinese translation based on a self-compiled manual annotation English-Chinese bilingual corpus. It aims at exploring the choice of language and the choice of translation method in the foreign language creation and rootless back-translation of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, discussing whether these choices adapt to the source language or the target language, and finding out the communicative effects they have achieved. The preliminary results show that： the choice of language and the choice of translation method in Foreign Language Creation mainly adapt to the target language to make easier for the target English readers to understand and partly adapt to the source language to keep local flavor; the choice of language and the choice of translation method in rootless back translation mainly adapt to the target language to make the translation authentic, accurate and smooth, and adaption to source language will lead to translationese. This research sheds new light on this special kind of writing and translation.

Use of Native Language in Foreign Language Classroom

Throughout decades of foreign language(L2) teaching,a recurring issue has been the role of the first language(L1) in the classroom.A long-term and wide-ranging debate persists regarding practical and theoretical questions about the significance of the L1’ s obvious influence on the L2 being learned.Although many feel that the L1 should not be used in the classroom,other researchers, teachers,and learners do see a role for the L1 and support its use as a communication strategy and instructional tool.This article will look at the historical background of this topic,and describe how the L1 is currently being used in the L2 classroom,including in written translation activities.A specific explanation will also be given about the benefits of using translation for assessing reading comprehension.

The Value Relevance of Foreign Currency Translation Adjustments （FCTAs） in the Italian Stock Exchange

The main aim of this paper is to test whether the foreign currency translation adjustments （FCTAs）, the largest components of other comprehensive income （OCI） for most firms, are incrementally value-relevant for investors with respect to the net income （NI）. Previous archival research on the value relevance of FCTAs has documented a weak or non-existent link between FCTAs and firm valuation （Pinto, 2005）. The hypothesized reasons could reside in the econometric method employed, in the use of as-if numbers, and in the missing consideration of the differential effect that exchange rate changes have on firms of varying levels of capital intensiveness. This study adds to the existing literature by empirically testing the value relevance of as-reported FCTAs numbers in the earnings and book value model the Ohlson-like interacted model through panel data techniques. The main finding of this study is that as-reported FCTAs are significantly and incrementally value-relevant, when their parameter estimates are allowed to vary in the cross-section.

An Effective Way of Foreign Language Learning Through Reading

This study examined the overall effectiveness of reading proficiency especially the extensive reading in ESL.In order to investi-gate the process of acquisition more efficiently,author used reading-to-write approach to investigate the connection between readingand foreign language learning.The research also shows that learners need to be provided with plenty of interesting and comprehensiblebooks and they are supposed to use strategies that they will acquire anyway as they read.

On educational system of legal translation course in colleges of China

With the broadening of economic and commercial communication between China and the outside world, the market of legal and contract document translation job is blooming harshly in both China and abroad. Accompanying this tendency, the professionalizing forensic development of translation is booming up as well. The request for higher education institutions to establish the education system of forensic translation is shining in human＇s eyes, and the cultivating system for the future, the world and profession is highly regarded. So comprehensive profession-cultivating, socialization and economy-serving should be the direction of the education of foreign languages department, related foreign forensic document translation and professional direction of public foreign language teaching as well are the aims of this reform of education. So the aim of this new education system should be the establishing the system of professional translation, forensic translation, cross-subject education and the cultivation of multi-professionals.

Domesticating and Foreignizing Strategies in Fiction Translation

This thesis is mainly concerned with the two translation strategies of domesticating translation and foreignizing translation.The former is to make readers understand original works easier;the latter is to make readers understand original works clearer.It is necessary to take into consideration the necessity of using these two kinds of strategies,the affecting factors of using these two strategies to translate fic tions and the ways of using these two strategies.

The Impact of Collaborative Reading on Iranian EFL Learners Development of Reading Comprehension

This research was carried out in Iranian EFL （English as a foreign language） reading comprehension classes in an attempt to answer three research questions： （1） Does collaborative reading lead to greater comprehension of a text than private reading？; （2） If so, what strategies are used by the students during collaborative reading？; and （3） In what ways might these strategies contribute to the higher level of comprehension？. A quasi-experimental design was used to answer the first question. The participants were pre-tested and streamed into two classes of equal reading comprehension abilities. The intervention consisted of four texts of equal length, comprising two rated in a pilot study as conceptually difficult/linguistically easy, and two rated as conceptually easy/linguistically difficult. The subjects in each class were involved in reading the two types of texts collaboratively and privately for four sessions. After reading the text, the subjects were asked to answer in writing 10 comprehension questions. Collaborative reading resulted in consistently and significantly higher scores than private reading for all four texts. Qualitative methods were employed to answer the last two questions. Group interactions during collaborative reading were tape recorded and transcribed, and 10 students selected at random from the two classes were interviewed in depth. Analysis of the group interaction transcripts revealed that the participants were using five major strategies in co-constructing meaning from the texts. These strategies included brainstorming, clarifying the language, summarizing, paraphrasing, and interaction management. Other minor （i.e., infrequent） strategies were also identified, such as making PCU/NCU （positive/negative claim to understand）, eliciting confirmation, and confirming.

A Study of Subtitle Translation from the Perspective of Reiss’s Text Ty pology Theory

In recent years,with the rapid development of mass media,films have become more and more popular both at home and abroad,meanwhile the subtitle translation has become a booming industry since it plays a vital role in establishing a relationship between the audience and film&TV works.Subtitle translation plays a more and more important role in bridging the audience and films.Most of the films are imported from the foreign countries,however,because of the barrier of the foreign language,the Chinese viewers have to enjoy the film on the basis of pictures and the translated captions,which give a great challenge to the translator.

The job of a translator is not an easy one. Very often, when translating from one language to another, the translator is faced with a lot of difficulties. The difficulties arise from the non-parallel structures of different languages, but there are other reasons, too. Although the translator is, in most cases, familiar with the grammar and syntax of the source-language, the problems arise when it comes to words. New words are produced every day in many different ways. Some of these new coinages acquire the status of the regular words of the English vocabulary, but some disappear with the changing of the situation for which they were invented. Very often, these new words are highly imaginative and clever products, but the problem for the translator is how to translate them. Is it possible to find an equivalent in the Serbian language for every newly invented word？ Is it possible to translate word for word？ And what is the role of a translator in that process？

Familiarity in Chinese and English Idiom Comprehension: An Event Related Potential Study from Chinese English Learners

Idioms have attracted great attention over recent decades. Nevertheless, controversies still remain in regard of the most plausible cognition mechanism for idiom comprehension, especially concerning non-Indo-European languages and second/foreign language users. Event Related Potential （ERP） experiments on proficient English learners whose native language was Mandarin Chinese were conducted to test the influences of idioms＇ familiarity on both Chinese and English （as foreign language） idiom comprehension. Data including accuracy rates, reaction time, and latency and peak amplitudes of N400 were recorded and analyzed, indicating that familiarity might play a significant role in idiom comprehension in both native and foreign languages. Further, idioms, should they have similar familiarity levels, may be easier to process in the native language （Chinese） than in the foreign language （English）.

对外翻译中的语言生态——基于《敦煌文化关键词》的翻译

语言生态理论要求译者具有语言意识,关注语言生态因素间的协作,为对外翻译提供了新的理论指导和研究视角。统筹考虑语言生态因素可以优化对外翻译的译文质量,塑造可持续发展的译文提升空间。文章参照语言生态理论,以2019年中宣部地方优秀外宣品一等奖获奖图书《敦煌文化关键词》为样本,从读者受众和译介选材、翻译策略和方法、译者文化情感以及评价原则方面解读分析语言生态因素的统筹考虑对本书的英译产生的影响,展示了对外翻译中的语言生态机制如何在具体的翻译任务中得以体现,为对外翻译的未来发展提供新的研究思路。

基于关联规则提取的外语翻译信息密度检测

为了提高外语翻译信息密度检测的有效性,提出基于关联规则提取的外语翻译信息密度检测方法。构建语料特征信息挖掘的二元模型,并采用关联规则提取方法计算关联规则分布特征参数,完成语料特征的提取。根据语料特征提取结果,计算信息密度检测中心点与信息增量特征的多维尺度信息。计算信息的平均可达密度,将其作为密度检测结果进行输出。实验结果表明,相较于传统对比方法,所提方法可以提高外语翻译信息密度检测精度,检测精度在97%左右。

建国三十年外文出版社英译图画书作品考查

新中国建国后,外文出版社开始大规模向海外译介中国本土儿童文学,并逐渐形成了以图画书为主要载体的对外译介模式。本文通过量化统计发现,这一时期现实主义题材是图画书对外译介的重点,包括革命斗争题材、旧社会苦难题材和新中国题材。同时,这一时期图书外译的选材标准是“政治第一,艺术第二”。建国三十年间的图画书英译经过建国初的萌芽、文革期的低谷、也迎来了改革开放后的迅速发展,在曲折中不断前进。

数字时代机器翻译引发的问题及思考

2023年是我国全面深化改革政策实施以来的第10年,全面深化改革取得了丰硕的成果。为了服务我国的外宣工作,该研究以全面深化改革的纲领性文件《习近平关于全面深化改革论述摘编》及中央编译局翻译的日文版『改革の全面的深化について』为语料,从词汇翻译探讨其使用的日文翻译策略。具体而言,该文结合实例探讨了缩略语、中日同形词、比喻、俗语等的翻译方法,并在陈岩和孟海霞研究的基础上更加细化了部分词汇的翻译策略,希望通过对词汇日译策略的探讨,为政治类文献的日文翻译提供参考,服务于我国的外宣工作及日语翻译教学。
