Idioms have attracted great attention over recent decades. Nevertheless, controversies still remain in regard of the most plausible cognition mechanism for idiom comprehension, especially concerning non-Indo-European languages and second/foreign language users. Event Related Potential (ERP) experiments on proficient English learners whose native language was Mandarin Chinese were conducted to test the influences of idioms' familiarity on both Chinese and English (as foreign language) idiom comprehension. Data including accuracy rates, reaction time, and latency and peak amplitudes of N400 were recorded and analyzed, indicating that familiarity might play a significant role in idiom comprehension in both native and foreign languages. Further, idioms, should they have similar familiarity levels, may be easier to process in the native language (Chinese) than in the foreign language (English). 展开更多

The study investigates: (1) how different idiom types, classified on the basis of a cross-linguistic comparison of Chinese and English idioms in terms of conceptual basis, affect English idiom comprehension as revealed from both the general performance and the on-line processing strategies adopted by Chinese EFL learners at different proficiency levels, and (2) to what extent can the observed learner behavior be accounted for within the theoretical framework of idiom comprehension. The study has provided empirical evidence for the configuration hypothesis of idiom comprehension. 展开更多

This empirical study investigates the differences in strategy use between advanced and intermediate Chinese EFL learners when processing unfamiliar English idioms. The results show that (1) a variety of strategies are used when subjects initially process unfamiliar English idioms; (2) the subjects across proficiency levels vary in the overall frequencies with which they employ strategies as well as in the particular types of strategies they use to process unfamiliar EFL idioms initially; (3) guessing strategies are the highest-ranking category among both the advanced and the intermediate level subjects. This paper concludes with a number of pedagogical suggestions for the teaching and learning of English idioms. 展开更多
