Overrunning clutches are unidirectional drive mechanisms that are widely used in transmission systems. However, existing overrunning clutches have complex structures, require high preparation accuracy, and fail after a certain degree of wear.To address these issues,we propose a new type of overrunning clutch consisting of a conical structure and novel compression-torsion conversion(CTC)metamaterial with curved plates.Theoretical calculations are employed to guide the material distribution and ensure the deformation coordination of the curved-plate CTC metamaterial for greater ultimate torque. The transmission mechanism of the proposed overrunning clutch is derived to guide the parameter selection of the CTC metamaterial and the conical structure.Experiments and finite element simulations reveal that the curved-plate CTC metamaterial features excellent CTC efficiency, flexibility, and transverse stiffness, which is conducive reducing the resistance of the overrunning state and ensures stability during operation. The unidirectional transmission system constructed with the new overrunning clutch shows reliable performances under working and overrunning states. The constructed overrunning clutch provides an effective one-way transmission method. The clutch with simple construction and self-compensated ability for wear exhibits great potential in miniaturized and lightweight equipment or robots. 展开更多

The present study area involves part of a deformed coalesced fan located along the Himalayan Frontal Thrust(HFT)on the east of river Tista near the India-Bhutan border. The area is marked by two spectacular E-W trending south-sloping scarps namely the Matiali(ca.60 m)and Chalsa(ca.90 m)Scarps and a north-sloping E-W trending Thaljhora(ca.80 m)Scarp. Our work comprises of a comparative study of geomorphology and geologic history in the adjacent interfluves of Jaldhaka-Gathia and Neora-Murti rivers to understand the tectonic history of the area.We mapped the Jaldhaka-Gathia river interfluve at a 1:25,000 scale and report a hitherto unidentified northerly sloping small scarp of ca.5 m height named the Nagrakata Scarp. This scarp was identified using satellite images,DEMs,and total station survey. We interpret that the two northsloping,E-W trending scarps(Thaljhora and Nagrakata Scarps)are manifestations of steep limbs of anticlines over blind south-dipping back thrusts.Together they form a wrinkle-ridge pair behind the north-dipping HFT,which is manifested by south-sloping Chalsa Scarp. We propose a plausible geomorphic model interpreting that deformation along the small fan in the Jaldhaka-Gathia interfluves is younger compared to fan deposition and deformation in the adjacent Mal-Murti interfluve. The most recent geomorphology of the Jaldhaka-Gathia interfluve is controlled by tectonism associated with the thrust below the Nagrakata Scarp where the youngest deformation episode is recorded to at around^6 ka and is likely related to motion on a splay off of the thrust beneath the Thaljhora Scarp. 展开更多

A novel compression-induced twisting(CIT)-compliant mechanism was designed based on the freedom and constraint topology(FACT)method and manufactured by means of laser powder bed fusion(LPBF).The effects of LPBF printing parameters on the formability and compressive properties of the laserprinted CIT-compliant mechanism were studied.Within the range of optimized laser powers from 375 to 450 W and with the densification level of the samples maintained at above 98%,changes in the obtained relative densities of the LPBF-fabricated CIT-compliant mechanism with the applied laser powers were not apparent.Increased laser power led to the elimination of residual metallurgical pores within the inclined struts of the CIT mechanism. The highest dimensional accuracy of 0.2% and the lowest surface roughness of 20μm were achieved at a laser power of 450 W.The deformation behavior of the CIT-compliant mechanism fabricated by means of LPBF exhibited four typical stages:an elastic stage,a heterogeneous plastic deformation stage,a strength-destroying stage, and a deformation-destroying stage(or instable deformation stage). The accumulated compressive strain of the optimally printed CIT mechanism using a laser power of 450 W went up to 20% before fracturing, demonstrating a large deformation capacity. The twisting behavior and mechanical properties were investigated via a combination of finite-element simulation and experimental verification. An approximately linear relationship between the axial compressive strain and rotation angle was achieved before the strain reached 15% for the LPBF-processed CIT-compliant mechanism. 展开更多

The effects of different complex shear stress conditions on grain refinement and texture evolution of Mg-13Gd-4Y-2Zn-0.5Zr alloy were investigated. With increasing strain rate, the average grain size of compression-shear(CS)and compression-torsion(CT)samples are decreased, and the grain size of dynamic recrystallization(DRX)grains is also decreased. This is because that the precipitation number ofβphases is increased, and the hindering effect on grain growth can be significantly enhanced. The DRX fractions of CS and CT samples are decreased with increased strain rate. The low DRX fraction at high strain rate is related to the insufficient time for grains to nucleate. The DRX process can be promoted by the PSN mechanism of second phases, and the grain growth can be restricted by the pinning effect. At the same time, the texture strength is enhanced as the strain rate increased.Besides, the kinking degree of lamellar long-period stacking ordered(LPSO)phases is increased.Under complex shear stress conditions,non-basal slip, especially pyramidal slip,is easily activated and the texture is deflected greatly.Compared with the CS samples,CT samples have smaller average grain size, higher DRX fraction, and lower texture strength for a certain strain rate. This is because that the equivalent stress of the CT sample is larger, the stress triaxiality is smaller,so more serious dislocations are piled up near grain boundaries and second phases. At the same time, since CT sample was sheared with torsion, the dislocation movement path can be called“rotational dislocation accumulation”,and the longer distribution path of the CT sample is generated,so more sub-grains and low-angle grain boundaries(LAGBs)are formed.Compared with the CS sample, more huge-angle grain boundaries(HAGBs)and DRX grains are formed from grain boundary to grain interior,so better grain refinement effect is achieved. 展开更多

A family of geophysical lineaments have been identified in ~15,000 km^2 in central Kerala between9 30'N to 10 45'N and 76 00'E to 77°30′E,integrating geophysical data with geological and geomorphological features. The characteristics of these lineaments in the magnetic and gravity fields and their derivatives have been analysed. The evolution of the lineaments has been traced to the temporal phases of global evolution of the region. A group of these faults have formed by reactivation of the deep-seated distensional fractures associated with and accompanying dyke emplacements during the episodic breakup of Gondwana at ~90 and 65 Ma under distinctive mantle thermal regimes. It is possible that reactivation of these distensional faults may have started during the cooling interval of time between the two distensions in the 90 and 65 Ma and post 65 Ma periods and later in the Cenozoic, when the lineaments were enlarged to their present dimension, possibly under the influence of forces that led to the uplift of the western Ghats. These may extend down to the crust-mantle interface. A cluster of youngergeophysical lineaments has been generated by reactivation along the weak planes of transformation of the charnockitic rocks of the Precambrian. They seem to have a strike-slip character. They are devoid of any dyke association and were formed on a cold crust. They may be confined to the upper-middle crust. They were generated in the high intensity intra-plate palaeo-stress fields of the triple forces arising from(1) the back-thrust from the Himalayan Collision;(2) the impact of epeirogenic forces and related isostatic uplift of the Western Ghats and(3) the flexural isostatic uplifts due to surface loads of late Mesozoic basaltic lavas and Cenozoic sedimentation in the coastal rifted basins in late Cenozoic, probably in the time span of 20 Ma to the present, when the palaeostress fields were most intense. 展开更多
