Conceptual Blending and Meme Humor on the Internet:The Example of COVID-19 Publicity Posters in Chinese Microblogging

Internet memes,as multimodal cultural products disseminated through the Internet,usually take the form of short videos or images that express humor or satire.The creation and dissemination of humor in memes are both creative and complex,and the successful perception of meme humor reflects humans’universal thinking capacity.Based on the theoretical framework of conceptual blending,this paper selects a set of COVID-19 publicity posters from the official Weibo account of China Guangzhou Fabu(Guangzhou Internet Information Office),analyses the multi-level structure of Internet memes,and explores the dynamic cognitive process in the interpretation of humorous memes to reveal people’s ability to make simultaneous analogies and integration between elements in different mental spaces.

Translation Study of Emotion Metaphors for “Anger” in Tang Xiangxing and Its English Version from the Perspective of Conceptual Blending Theory

Emotion has always played an important role in human life.Owing to its fuzzy and abstract features,people often express it metaphorically.Conceptual Blending theory can clearly show the meaning construction and thinking process between the author of original text and the translator of target text.Emotion metaphors are abundant in Tang Xiangxing,especially emotion metaphor for“anger”.So,the study will reveal the dynamic construction mechanism and translation strategy of emotion metaphor for“anger”with the help of conceptual blending theory,in order to provide some reference for metaphor translation in literary work and also be beneficial to introduce the excellent Chinese culture.

On the Analysis of Newly Coined Chinese Words from the Perspective of Conceptual Blending Theory

This paper aims to find out the effect of using the conceptual blending theory to understand the meaning construction of newly coined Chinese words and phrases such as internet catchwords.Through illustration of some examples,it is found that the conceptual blending theory is applicable in explaining Chinese linguistic phenomena and it offers us a new perspective to understand new linguistic phenomena in Chinese.

The Construal of Typical Hypallage Under the Hybrid Model

In this paper,the hybrid model based on the conceptual blending theory and qualia structure is applied to the interpretation of the meaning construction of typical hypallage.Based on this study,it has been proved that the hypallage is not only a creative and appealing linguistic phenomenon but also a productive cognitive operation based on the double scope integration which enable people to use the same modifier to describe the things which intuitively belong to distinct sort of types without any cognitive difficulties.

Computational and conceptual blends: Material considerations and agency in a multi-material design workflow

The assimilation of functionally graded (or multi-) materials into architecture is deemed to enable the rethinking of current architectural design practice and bring back material considerations at the heart of the early design process. In response, the paper outlines a functionally graded material (FGM) design workflow that departs from standard early-stage CAD, which is typically performed via computer elements devoid of materiality. It then analyses this workflow from a theoretical perspective, namely through Edwin Hutchins’ materially anchored conceptual blending, Lambros Malafouris’ Material Engagement Theory (MET) and John Searle’s concepts of intentionality. The aim is to demonstrate that due to the superimposition of material considerations that precede and succeed the CAD operation, working with material-less entities during early-stage FGM design is not logically sustainable. Additionally, multi-materiality allows for the questioning of authorship in the design process and leads to a repositioning of agency from the subject to the locus of engagement with digital materials and their affordances.
