An anchorage reliability analysis approach for simply supported reinforced concrete beams under corrosion attack in the anchorage zone is developed. The first-order second-moment method is employed to analyze the effects of various factors on the anchorage reliability. These factors include both the length and width of cover cracking due to reinforcement corrosion, the cover thickness, the anchorage length, and the stirrup ratio. The results show that the effect of corrosion-induced crack length on the reliability index for anchorage,β0,is negligible when the crack on the concrete surface is just appearing, but with the crack widening, the β0 value is reduced significantly;the considerable changes in β0 result from a variation in cover depth and anchorage length;the effect of changes in the diameter or space of stirrups on the anchorage resistance is very limited, and the variation in β0 is also very low. 展开更多

Most reinforced concrete structures in seaside locations suffer from corrosion damage to the reinforcement, limiting their durability and necessitating costly repairs. To improve their performance and durability, we have investigated in this paper Aloe vera extracts as a green corrosion inhibitor for reinforcing steel in NaCl environments. Using electrochemical methods (zero-intensity chronopotentiometry, Tafel lines and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy), this experimental work investigated the effect of these Aloe vera (AV) extracts on corrosion inhibition of concrete reinforcing bar (HA, diameter 12mm) immersed in a 0.5M NaCl solution. The results show that Aloe vera extracts have an average corrosion-inhibiting efficacy of around 86% at an optimum concentration of 20%. 展开更多

The experimental results which were carried out by different researchers on corrosion of RCC beam were validated in ABAQUS. A finite element (FE) model similar to experimental condition was generated in ABAQUS. The model with different percentages of corrosion and with varying load conditions was also generated. The deflections of RCC beam for different corrosion percentages and for varying load conditions were then validated. The model is then used to explore the effects of bar radial expansion, due to formation of corrosion products, on the cracking of cover concrete. The predictions are compared with tests results from reinforced concrete accelerated corrosion specimens. The aim of the analytical investigation was to reveal the mechanism for the development of concrete cracking due to corrosion of reinforcement. Further the finite element model will be used to explain qualitatively the experimentally determined relationship between amount of corrosion for concrete cracking and ratio of concrete cover to bar diameter, as well as that between reinforcement bond strength and amount of corrosion. 展开更多

The frequency change square ratio is used as a parameter for the damage. It is theoretically verified that the parameter is a function of the damage location. Experimental results of the corrosion in reinforced concrete structures show that the predicted damage location is in agreement with the real damage location. The coupling model of major influence factors such state affecting the chloride diffusion process in concrete is as environmental relative humidity, load-induced crack and stress discussed. The probability distributions of the critical chloride concentration Cc, the chloride diffusion coefficient D, and the surface chloride concentration Cs were determined based on the collected natural exposure data. And the estimation of probability of corrosion initiation considering the coupling effects of influence factors is presented. It is found that the relative humidity and curing time are the most effective factors affecting the probability of corrosion initiation before and after 10 years of exposure time. At the same exposure time, the influence of load-induced crack and stress state on the probability of corrosion initiation is obvious, in which the effect of crack is the most one 展开更多

Accurate simulation of the cracking process caused by rust expansion of reinforced concrete(RC)structures plays an intuitive role in revealing the corrosion-induced failure mechanism.Considering the quasi-brittle fracture of concrete, the fracture phase field driven by the compressive-shear term is constructed and added to the traditional brittle fracture phase field model. The rationality of the proposed model is verified by a mixed fracture example under a shear displacement load. Then, the extended fracture phase model is applied to simulate the corrosion-induced cracking process of RC.The cracking patterns caused by non-uniform corrosion expansion are discussed for RC specimens with homogeneous macroscopically or heterogeneous with different polygonal aggregate distributions at the mesoscopic scale. Then, the effects of the protective layer on the crack propagation trajectory and cracking resistance are investigated, illustrating that the cracking angle and cracking resistance increase with the increase of the protective layer thickness, consistent with the experimental observation. Finally, the corrosion-induced cracking process of concrete specimens with large and small spacing rebars is simulated, and the interaction of multiple corrosion cracking is easily influenced by the reinforcement spacing, which increases with the decrease of the steel bar interval. These conclusions play an important role in the design of engineering anti-corrosion measures. The fracture phase field model can provide strong support for the life assessment of RC structures. 展开更多

Square piles of reinforced concrete(RC)in marine environments are susceptible to chloride-inducedcorrosion.A novel reverse-seepage technique(RST)is applied to square piles to block the intrusion of chlorides.Thisresearch introduces a computational model designed to predict the lifespan of corrosion initiation in reinforced concretesquare piles when applied reverse-seepage pressure. The model considers the impacts of chloride binding and the tripletime-dependence property among the permeability, the corrected surface chloride concentration, and the diffusioncoefficient. The proposed numerical model is solved using the alternating direction implicit(ADI)approach, and itsaccuracy and reliability are evaluated by contrasting the computational outcomes with the analytical solution andexperimental results.Furthermore, the primary factors contributing to the corrosion of reinforced concrete square pilesare analyzed. The results indicate that applying RST can decrease the chloride penetration depth and prolong the lifespanof corrosion initiation in square piles. The water-cement ratio and reverse seepage pressure are the most influentialfactors.A water pressure of 0.4 MPa can double the life of concrete, and the durable life of concrete with a water-cementratio of 0.3 can reach 100 years. 展开更多

A nonlinear finite element model (FEM) of the corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete has been successfully developed on the basis of mathematical analysis of the electrochemical process of steel corrosion in concrete. The influences of the area ratio and the Tafel constants of the anode and cathode on the potential and corrosion current density have been examined with the model. It has been found that the finite element calculation is more suitable for assessing the corrosion condition of steel reinforcement than ordinary electrochemical techniques due to the fact that FEM can obtain the distributions of potential and corrosion current density on the steel surface. In addition, the local corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete is strengthened with the decrease of both the area ratio and the Tafel constants. These results provide valuable information to the researchers who investigate steel corrosion. 展开更多

This work first investigates the corrosion-inhibiting behavior of montmorillonite K-10 on reinforcing steel. The corrosion-inhibiting power of the clay (Montmorillonite) is determined in a medium HCl (C = 1N) using free corrosion potential monitoring, Tafel potentiodynamic polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results of this study showed a satisfactory corrosion-inhibiting efficiency of around 72.665% for the optimum content of 1%. This is due to the presence of a stable oxide layer that protects the metal against corrosion. To validate the concept of montmorillonite as a corrosion inhibitor in repair mortar, we now turn to the influence of montmorillonite on the mechanical properties of mortars in the hardened state. In this part, montmorillonite K-10 is added to the mortar by partial substitution of the cement by 5% and 10% of the cement mass. The aim of this study is to ensure that the addition of this clay to the mortar composition will not have a negative effect on its compressive and flexural strengths. The results of the compression and flexural tests showed that the presence of montmorillonite in the mortar improved flexural and compressive strengths for the different compositions studied. 展开更多

In order to investigate the degradation of bonding properties between corroded steel bars and concrete, this study employs the half-beam method to conduct bond-slip tests between corroded steel bars and concrete after impressed-current accelerated corrosion of the steel bars in concrete. The effects of steel corrosion rate, steel bar diameter, steel bar strength grade, and concrete strength grade on the bonding properties between concrete and corroded steel bars were analyzed. The influence of different corrosion rates on specimens’bonding strength and bond-slip curves was determined, and a constitutive relationship for bond-slip between corroded steel bars and concrete was proposed. The results indicate that the ultimate bonding strength of corroded reinforced concrete specimens decreases with increasing corrosion rate.Additionally,an increase in corrosive crack width leads to a linear decrease in bonding strength.Evaluating the decline in adhesive properties through rust expansion crack width in engineering applications is feasible.Furthermore,a bond-slip constitutive relationship between corroded steel bars and concrete was established using relative bond stress and relative slip values, which aligned well with the experimental findings. 展开更多

An electro-deposition method has been recently proposed to repair cracked reinforced concrete. To evaluate the corrosion resistance of the reinforcing steel in cracked concrete, three different parameters including type of auxiliary electrode, electrode distance, and current density were studied. Tafel polarization curve was used to evaluate the corrosion resistance of the steel. Self-corrosion potential and corrosion current of the steel were tested. The results indicate that the corrosion resistance improvement of the reinforcing steel is optimal as prism titanium mesh is applied as auxiliary electrode, followed by the flaky titanium mesh and the column titanium bar. When the electrode distance is 60 mm, the corrosion resistance improvement of the reinforcing steel is optimal, and with 80 mm electrode distance, the corrosion resistance improvement is the poorest. The property falls in between them when 40 mm electrode distance is used. Moreover, the corrosion resistance improvement of the reinforcing steel increases as the current density goes up. 展开更多

Reinforcement corrosion directly affects the mechanical behavior of reinforced concrete structures. An electric corrosion test was conducted on a reinforced concrete test specimen, and a finite element model of the reinforcement corrosion damage was established. In addition, the damage behavior of reinforced concrete under different corrosion sediment distribution characteristics and different corrosion rates was studied. It was noted that when corrosion sediments are in a“semiellipse+semicircle”distribution, the results of numerical calculation are consistent with those obtained experimentally, reflecting the damage characteristics of reinforced concrete test specimens.Further, the results showed that the distribution characteristics of corrosion sediments greatly influence the damage behavior of reinforced concrete. In particular, when the corrosion sediments demonstrate a“semiellipse”distribution, reinforced concrete members may easily suffer from reinforcement damages. In the case of“semiellipse+semicircle”and“circle”distributions, the cohesive force between the reinforcements and concrete decreases:With the same corrosion rate, the damaged area expands with the increase in the number of reinforcements, which indicates a reduction in the cohesive force and thus,a reduction in the damage in the reinforcement area. This paper analyzes in-depth the effects of reinforcement corrosion expansion on the concrete damage behavior, provides references for practical engineering. 展开更多

The deterioration of concrete over time is the result of various mechanical, physical, chemical and biological processes, with the corrosion of reinforcement being the most serious problem of durability of reinforced concrete structures. Over the last 50 years, a tremendous effort has been spent by the international scientific community with laboratory research and experimental field studies in order to increase the resistance of concrete over corrosion. This paper presents an experimental study of the corrosion behavior of 5 different concrete mix designs. The compositions were developed as per the latest concrete regulations and International Standards which are as follows: conventional concrete C30/37, conventional concrete with corrosion inhibitor as an additive, conventional concrete with surface spray sealant, fine aggregate concrete and self-compacting concrete. Their behavior against corrosion was determined via the following tests: water absorption test, water permeability test, mercury intrusion porosimetry, rapid chloride penetration test (RCPT), and accelerated carbonation test. The experimental results showed that the corrosion systems examined in the study provide anti-corrosion protection on steel rebars against corrosion comparing with the reference group. Also, an inversely proportional relationship of the water/cement ratio of a composition with its corrosion behavior was observed. Smaller w/c values (0.4 instead of 0.5) lead to better anti-corrosion resistance. In addition, an analogous relationship between the cement content of a composition and its corrosion behavior was observed. 展开更多

The purpose of this study was to develop an analytical model to predict the time required for cracking of concrete due to corrosion of the iron reinforcement. The concrete and cement specimens used for this study were batched with cover material ranging from 0.75 to 1.3 in (1.91 to 3.30 cm). The extent of cover material was not formulated into the model under the assumption that crack initiation would tend to produce visible cracking within a relatively short time period. The model was derived using both Hooke’s Law and the volume expansion induced by the corrosion oxides. Correlation achieved with specimen cracking data from the literature was relatively good with a 95% level of confidence. This model presents a key benefit to facility and infrastructure managers by enabling them to plan the time when corrosion mitigating actions are required. It also provides a significant convenience as the condition of the concrete structure or its environment changes over time. The only parameter that needs to be updated over time is the corrosion rate measurement. This single parameter captures the most influential impact that stems from several other parameters which tend to be required in models that are more mechanistically definitive. 展开更多

This paper focuses on methodological issues relevant to corrosion risk prediction models.A model was developed for the prediction of corrosion rates associated with hot-dip galvanised reinforcement bar material in concrete exposed to carbonation and chlorides in outdoor environment.One-year follow-up experiments, over five years, were conducted at various carbonation depths and chloride contents. The observed dependence of corrosion rate on the depth of carbonation and chloride content is complex indicating that the interaction between the carbonation and chloride influencing the corrosion.A non-linear corrosion model was proposed with statistical analysis to model the relationship between the corrosion rate and the test parameters. The main methodological contributions are(i)the proposed modeling approach able to take into account the uncertain measurement errors including unobserved systematic and random heterogeneity over different measured specimens and correlation for the same specimen across different measuring times, which best suits the measurement data;(ii)the developed model in which an interaction parameter is introduced especially to account for the contribution and the degree of the unobserved carbonation-chloride interaction. The proposed model offers greater flexibility for the modelling of measurement data than traditional models. 展开更多

In order to study the effectiveness of combined carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets and steel jacket in strengthening the seismic performance of corrosion-damaged reinforced concrete (RC) columns, twelve reinforced concrete columns are tested under combined lateral cyclic displacement excursions and constant axial load. The variables studied in this program include effects of corrosion degree of the rebars, level of axial load, the amount of CFRP sheets and steel jacket. The results indicate that the combined CFRP and steel jacket retrofitting technique is effective in improving load-carrying, ductility and energy absorption capacity of the columns. Compared with the corrosion-damaged RC column, the lateral load and the ductility factor of many strengthened columns increase more than 90% and 100%, respectively. The formulae for the calculation of the yielding load, the maximum lateral load and the displacement ductility factor of the strengthened columns under combined constant axial load and cyclically increasing lateral loading are developed. The test results are also compared with the results obtained from the proposed formulae. A good agreement between calculated values and experimental results is observed. 展开更多

In order to study the durability behavior of marine reinforced concrete structure suffering from chloride attack, the structural service life is assumed to be divided into three critical stages, which can be characterized by steel corrosion and cover cracking. For each stage, a calculated model used to predict the lifetime is developed. Based on the definition of durability limit state, a probabilistic lifetime model and its time-dependent reliability analytical method are proposed considering the random natures of influencing factors. Then, the probabilistic lifetime prediction models are applied to a bridge pier located in the Hangzhou Bay with Monte Carlo simulation. It is found that the time to corrosion initiation to follows a lognormal distribution, while that the time from corrosion initiation to cover cracking t~ and the time for crack to develop from hairline crack to a limit crack width t2 can be described by Weibull distributions. With the permitted failure probability of 5.0%, it is also observed that the structural durability lifetime mainly depends on the durability life to and that the percentage of participation of the life to to the total service life grows from 61.5% to 83.6% when the cover thickness increases from 40 mm to 80 mm. Therefore, for any part of the marine RC bridge, the lifetime predictions and maintenance efforts should also be directed toward controlling the stage of corrosion initiation induced by chloride ion. 展开更多

Freeze-thaw durabilities of three types of concretesnormal portland cement concrete (OPC), high strength concrete (HSC) and steel fiber reinforced high strength concrete (SFRHSC) were systemically investigated under the attacks of chemical solution, and combination of external flexural stress and chemical solution. Four kinds of bitterns from salt lakes in Sinkiang, Qinghai, Inner Mongolia and Tibet provinces of China were used as chemical attack solutions. The relative dynamic modulus (RDM) was used as an index for evaluating the damage degree during the course of chemical attack and stress corrosion. The experimental results show that the freeze-thaw durability of concrete is visibly reduced in the present of the flexural stress, i e, stress accelerates the damage process. In order to quantify the stress accelerated effect, a stress accelerating coefficient was proposed. The stress accelerating coefficient is closely related with the types of bitterns and the numbers of freeze-thaw cycles is. The more numbers of freeze-thaw cycles is, the greater the stress accelerating coefficient for various concretes will be. In addition, there also exists a critical ratio of external stress to the maximum flexural stress. If the stress ratio exceeds the critical one, the freeze-thaw durability of various concretes will be greatly decreased compared to the responding concretes without applied stress. The critical stress ratio of OPC, HSC and SFRHSC is 0.30, 0.40 and 0.40, respectively, indicating that HSC and SFRHSC have advantages over OPC and are suitable to use in the bittern erosion regions. 展开更多

The results show that mill scale exerts different influences on the corrosion resistance of both steels at various electrochemical stages. We propose that the high long-term corrosion resistance of LA steel is mainly achieved through the synergistic effect of a gradually formed compact, adherent and well-distributed Cr-enriched inner rust layer and the physical barrier protection effect of mill scale. 展开更多
