To ensure the long-term safety and stability of bridge pile foundations in permafrost regions,it is necessary to investigate the rheological effects on the pile tip and pile side bearing capacities. The creep characteristics of the pile-frozen soil interface are critical for determining the long-term stability of permafrost pile foundations. This study utilized a self-developed large stress-controlled shear apparatus to investigate the shear creep characteristics of the frozen silt-concrete interface, and examined the influence of freezing temperatures(−1,−2,and−5°C),contact surface roughness(0,0.60,0.75,and 1.15 mm),normal stress(50,100,and 150 kPa),and shear stress on the creep characteristics of the contact surface.By incorporating the contact surface’s creep behavior and development trends,we established a creep constitutive model for the frozen silt-concrete interface based on the Nishihara model, introducing nonlinear elements and a damage factor. The results revealed significant creep effects on the frozen silt-concrete interface under constant load, with creep displacement at approximately 2-15 times the instantaneous displacement and a failure creep displacement ranging from 6 to 8 mm.Under different experimental conditions, the creep characteristics of the frozen silt-concrete interface varied.A larger roughness, lower freezing temperatures, and higher normal stresses resulted in a longer sample attenuation creep time,a lower steady-state creep rate, higher long-term creep strength, and stronger creep stability.Building upon the Nishihara model,we considered the influence of shear stress and time on the viscoelastic viscosity coefficient and introduced a damage factor to the viscoplasticity. The improved model effectively described the entire creep process of the frozen silt-concrete interface. The results provide theoretical support for the interaction between pile and soil in permafrost regions. 展开更多

This paper discusses the seismic analysis of concrete dams with consideration of material nonlinearity. Based on a consistent rate-dependent model and two thermodynamics-based models, two thermodynamics-based rate-dependent constitutive models were developed with consideration of the influence of the strain rate. They can describe the dynamic behavior of concrete and be applied to nonlinear seismic analysis of concrete dams taking into account the rate sensitivity of concrete. With the two models, a nonlinear analysis of the seismic response of the Koyna Gravity Dam and the Dagangshan Arch Dam was conducted. The results were compared with those of a linear elastic model and two rate-independent thermodynamics-based constitutive models, and the influences of constitutive models and strain rate on the seismic response of concrete dams were discussed. It can be concluded from the analysis that, during seismic response, the tensile stress is the control stress in the design and seismic safety evaluation of concrete dams. In different models, the plastic strain and plastic strain rate of concrete dams show a similar distribution. When the influence of the strain rate is considered, the maximum plastic strain and plastic strain rate decrease. 展开更多

In order to investigate the mechanical properties and stress-strain curves of concrete at different ages under impact load, the impact compression tests of concrete at age of 1, 3, 7, 14 and 28 d were conducted with a large diameter split Hopkinson pressure bar, respectively. Based on statistical damage theory and Weibull distribution, combining the analysis of the change laws of stressstrain curves and viscosity coefficient of concrete with age, a damage constitutive model that can reflect the variation in dynamic mechanical properties with age was proposed. The stress-strain curves calculated from the proposed model are in good agreement with those from experimental data directly. 展开更多

Based on the consistency-viscoplastic constitutive model, the static William-Warnke model with three-parameters is modified and a consistency-viscoplastic William-Warnke model with three-parameters is developed that considers the effect of strain rates. Then, the tangent modulus of the consistency viscoplastic model is introduced and an implicit backward Elure iterative algorithm is developed. Comparisons between the numerical simulations and experimental data show that the consistency model properly provides the uniaxial and biaxial dynamic behaviors of concrete. To study the effect of strain rates on the dynamic response of concrete structures, the proposed model is used in the analysis of the dynamic response of a simply-supported beam and the results show that the strain rate has a significant effect on the displacement and stress magnitudes and distributions. Finally, the seismic responses of a 278 m high arch dam are obtained and compared by using the linear elastic model,as well as rate-independent and rate-dependent William-Warnke three-parameter models. The results indicate that the strain rate affects the first principal stresses, and the maximal equivalent viscoplastic strain rate of the arch dam. Numerical calculations and analyses reveal that considering the strain rate is important in the safety assessments of arch dams located in seismically active areas. 展开更多

It is developed by integrating a Bodner-Partom viscoplastic model with a newdamage evolution equation. A set of ordinary differential equations( ODEs) is formulated, and a Runge-Kutta integral method is used to get stress-strain curves given by the model. Also,stress-strain curves of a wide range of strain-rates for concrete were obtained by split Hopkinson pressure bar( SHPB) tests. By fitting the integral stressstrain curves to the experimental ones with the least square optimization method,we determined the material parameters in our model. Some properties of the newmodel, such as strain-rate sensitivity, damage evolution characteristics,strain-rate jump effects and unloading feature, are explored. These results showthat our new model can describe dynamic behaviors of concrete very well, and our integrating-fitting-optimizing method to get material parameters is valid. 展开更多

An elastoplastic damage constitutive model to simulate nonlinear behavior of concrete is presented. Similar to traditional plastic theory, the irreversible deformation is modeled in effective stress space. In order to better describe different stiffness degradation mechanisms of concrete under tensile and compressive loading conditions, two damage variables, i.e., tension and compression are introduced, to quantitatively evaluate the degree of deterioration of concrete structure. The rate dependent behavior is taken into account, and this model is derived firmly in the framework of irreversible thermodynamics. Fully implicit backward-Euler algorithm is suggested to perform constitutive integration. Numerical results of the model accord well with the test results for specimens under uniaxial tension and compression, biaxial loading and triaxial loading. Failure processes of double-edge-notched (DEN) specimen are also simulated to further validate the proposed model. 展开更多

A uniaxial concrete constitutive model considering the bond-slip effect is proposed and its finite element analysis(FEA)implementation on a fiber section of a beam-column element is presented. The tension-stiffening,crackclosing,crack-opening,cyclic degradation of the tensile capacity of reinforced concrete are modeled, which reveals the significance of energy dissipation resulting from bond slip during crack opening and closing under cyclic loading. The model is based on a simplified mechanical concept in a smeared manner and verified through quasi-static test results of X-type slender RC columns. The FEA results using a common concrete model with no consideration of bond slip present significant pinching when predicting the hysteretic loop of slender columns, which is not consistent with the test results and underestimates the capacity of energy dissipation of cracking during cyclic load. The results obtained with the proposed model show good agreement with the test results, which can reflect the degradation of stiffness and strength as well as the energy dissipation of the crack opening and closing due to the bond slip effect.Considering its simplicity and computational efficiency,it is more applicable for analyzing large-scale structures than other methods that consider the bond-slip effect, especially for slender columns, such as those used in cooling towers and subjected to seismic excitation. 展开更多

The finite-depth concrete panels have been widely applied in the protective structures, and its impact resistance and dynamic fracture failures, especially the scabbing/perforation limits, under high velocity projectile impact, are mainly concerned by protective engineers, which are numerically studied based on an improved dynamic concrete model in this study.Firstly, based on the framework of the KCC(Karagozian&Case concrete)model,a dynamic concrete model is proposed which considers an independent tensile damage model and a continued transition between dynamic tensile and compressive properties.Secondly, the strength surface, equation of state and damage parameters of the proposed model are comprehensively calibrated by a triaxial compressive test with high confinement pressure, the rationality of which is further verified based on the single element tests,e.g.,uniaxial and triaxial compression as well as uniaxial, biaxial and triaxial tension.Thirdly,a series of projectile high velocity impact tests on thin and thick concrete panels are simulated, which indicates that the projectile residual velocity and dynamic fracture failures are reproduced satisfactorily, while the KCC model underestimates both the spalling and scabbing dimensions severely. Finally, based on the validated concrete model and finite element analyses approach, the validations of the existing five empirical formulae are evaluated,in terms of the depth of penetration(DOP)and scabbing/perforation limits of concrete panel. Both the Army corps of engineers(ACE)and modified National Defense Research Committee(NDRC)formulae are recommended in the design of the protective structure to avoid scabbing failure. 展开更多

According to the damage mechanism of concrete material during the uniaxial compressive failure process, this paper further establishes the statistical damage constitutive model of concrete subjected to uniaxial compressive stress based on the statistical damage model under uniaxial tension. The damage evolution law in the direction subjected to pressure is confirmed by the tensile damage evolution process of lateral deformation due to the Poisson effect, and then the compressive stress-strain relationship is defined. The peak nominal stress state and the critical state occurring in the macro longitudinal distributed splitting cracks are distinguished. The whole loading process can be divided into the even damage phase and the local breakage phase. The concrete specimen is divided into the failure process zone and the resting unloading zone. The size effects during the local breakage phase under the uniaxial monotonic compressive process and the hysteretic phenomenon under the cyclic compressive loading process are analyzed. Finally, the comparison between theoretical results and experimental results preliminarily verifies the rationality and feasibility of understanding the failure mechanism of concrete through the statistical damage constitutional law. 展开更多

Biaxial compression tests on plain concrete suffered high temperature ranging from 200 ℃ to 600 ℃ were carried out using the large-scale dynamic-static tri-axial concrete test system at the State Key Laboratory of Coastal and Offshore Engineering with designated stress ratios of 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1, respectively. The measured strength and strain were reported and the changes in both biaxial compressive failure envelopes and strains at peak stresses were analyzed. The regressive equation of initial elastic modulus in the biggest principal compressive stress direction was derived from test results. With the published results from previous biaxial tension-compression experiments, a three-parameter failure criterion has been proposed. A biaxial nonlinear elastic incremental constitutive model was developed for the compressive stress directions by using the equivalent uniaxial strain values deduced from test results. Analytical results obtained from the proposed biaxial constitutive model achieve good agreement with the experimental results. 展开更多

The majority of the projectiles used in the hypersonic penetration study are solid flat-nosed cylindrical projectiles with a diameter of less than 20 mm.This study aims to fill the gap in the experimental and analytical study of the evolution of the nose shape of larger hollow projectiles under hypersonic penetration. In the hypersonic penetration test, eight ogive-nose AerMet100 steel projectiles with a diameter of 40 mm were launched to hit concrete targets with impact velocities that ranged from 1351 to 1877 m/s.Severe erosion of the projectiles was observed during high-speed penetration of heterogeneous targets, and apparent localized mushrooming occurred in the front nose of recovered projectiles.By examining the damage to projectiles,a linear relationship was found between the relative length reduction rate and the initial kinetic energy of projectiles in different penetration tests.Furthermore, microscopic analysis revealed the forming mechanism of the localized mushrooming phenomenon for eroding penetration,i.e.,material spall erosion abrasion mechanism, material flow and redistribution abrasion mechanism and localized radial upsetting deformation mechanism. Finally,a model of highspeed penetration that included erosion was established on the basis of a model of the evolution of the projectile nose that considers radial upsetting;the model was validated by test data from the literature and the present study.Depending upon the impact velocity,v0,the projectile nose may behave as undistorted, radially distorted or hemispherical.Due to the effects of abrasion of the projectile and enhancement of radial upsetting on the duration and amplitude of the secondary rising segment in the pulse shape of projectile deceleration, the predicted DOP had an upper limit. 展开更多

Structural planes play an important role in controlling the stability of rock engineering, and the influence of structural planes should be considered in the design and construction process of rock engineering. In this paper, mechanical properties, constitutive theory, and numerical application of structural plane are studied by a combination method of laboratory tests, theoretical derivation, and program development. The test results reveal the change laws of various mechanical parameters under different roughness and normal stress. At the pre-peak stage,a non-stationary model of shear stiffness is established, and threedimensional empirical prediction models for initial shear stiffness and residual stage roughness are proposed. The nonlinear constitutive models are established based on elasto-plastic mechanics, and the algorithms of the models are developed based on the return mapping algorithm.According to a large number of statistical analysis results, empirical prediction models are proposed for model parameters expressed by structural plane characteristic parameters. Finally, the discrete element method(DEM)is chosen to embed the constitutive models for practical application. The running programs of the constitutive models have been compiled into the discrete element model library. The comparison results between the proposed model and the Mohr-Coulomb slip model show that the proposed model can better describe nonlinear changes at different stages, and the predicted shear strength, peak strain and shear stiffness are closer to the test results. The research results of the paper are conducive to the accurate evaluation of structural plane in rock engineering. 展开更多

Soil nonlinear behavior displays noticeable effects on the site seismic response. This study proposes a new functional expression of the skeleton curve to replace the hyperbolic skeleton curve.By integrating shear modulus and combining the dynamic skeleton curve and the damping degradation coefficient, the constitutive equation of the logarithmic dynamic skeleton can be obtained, which considers the damping effect in a soil dynamics problem.Based on the finite difference method and the multi-transmitting boundary condition,a 1D site seismic response analysis program called Soilresp1D has been developed herein and used to analyze the time-domain seismic response in three types of sites. At the same time, this study also provides numerical simulation results based on the hyperbolic constitutive model and the equivalent linear method. The results verify the rationality of the new soil dynamic constitutive model. It can analyze the mucky soil site nonlinear seismic response, reflecting the deformation characteristics and damping effect of the silty soil. The hysteresis loop area is more extensive, and the residual strain is evident. 展开更多

Cyclic loads generated by environmental factors, such as winds, waves, and trains, will likely lead to performance degradation in pile foundations, resulting in issues like permanent displacement accumulation and bearing capacity attenuation. This paper presents a semi-analytical solution for predicting the axial cyclic behavior of piles in sands. The solution relies on two enhanced nonlinear load-transfer models considering stress-strain hysteresis and cyclic degradation in the pile-soil interaction.Model parameters are calibrated through cyclic shear tests of the sand-steel interface and laboratory geotechnical testing of sands.A novel aspect involves the meticulous formulation of the shaft loadtransfer function using an interface constitutive model, which inherently inherits the interface model’s advantages, such as capturing hysteresis, hardening, degradation, and particle breakage. The semi-analytical solution is computed numerically using the matrix displacement method, and the calculated values are validated through model tests performed on non-displacement and displacement piles in sands. The results demonstrate that the predicted values show excellent agreement with the measured values for both the static and cyclic responses of piles in sands. The displacement pile response, including factors such as bearing capacity, mobilized shaft resistance, and convergence rate of permanent settlement, exhibit improvements compared to non-displacement piles attributed to the soil squeezing effect. This methodology presents an innovative analytical framework, allowing for integrating cyclic interface models into the theoretical investigation of pile responses. 展开更多

Eddy current dampers (ECDs) have emerged as highly desirable solutions for vibration control due to theirexceptional damping performance and durability. However, the existing constitutive models present challenges tothe widespread implementation of ECD technology, and there is limited availability of finite element analysis (FEA)software capable of accurately modeling the behavior of ECDs. This study addresses these issues by developing anewconstitutivemodel that is both easily understandable and user-friendly for FEAsoftware. By utilizing numericalresults obtained from electromagnetic FEA, a novel power law constitutive model is proposed to capture thenonlinear behavior of ECDs. The effectiveness of the power law constitutive model is validated throughmechanicalproperty tests and numerical seismic analysis. Furthermore, a detailed description of the application process ofthe power law constitutive model in ANSYS FEA software is provided. To facilitate the preliminary design ofECDs, an analytical derivation of energy dissipation and parameter optimization for ECDs under harmonicmotionis performed. The results demonstrate that the power law constitutive model serves as a viable alternative forconducting dynamic analysis using FEA and optimizing parameters for ECDs. 展开更多

This paper examines the mechanical behavior offiber reinforced polymer(FRP)-confined concrete under cyclic compression using the 3D cohesive zone model(CZM).A numerical modeling method was developed, employing zero-thickness cohesive elements to represent the stress-displacement relationship of concrete potential fracture surfaces and FRP-concrete interfaces.Additionally,mixed-mode damage plastic constitutive models were pro-posed for the concrete potential fracture surfaces and FRP-concrete interface, considering interfacial friction.Furthermore,an anisotropic plastic constitutive model was developed for the FRP composite jacket. The CZM model proposed in this study was validated using experimental data from plain concrete and large rupture strain(LRS)FRP-confined concrete subjected to cyclic compression. The simulation results demonstrate that the pro-posed model accurately predicts the mechanical response of both concrete and FRP-confined concrete under cyc-lic compression.Lastly, various parametric studies were conducted to investigate the internal failure mechanism of FRP-confined concrete under cyclic loading to analyze the influence of the inner friction plasticity of different components. 展开更多

The tensile-shear interactive damage(TSID)model is a novel and powerful constitutive model for rock-like materials. This study proposes a methodology to calibrate the TSID model parameters to simulate sandstone. The basic parameters of sandstone are determined through a series of static and dynamic tests, including uniaxial compression,Brazilian disc, triaxial compression under varying confining pressures, hydrostatic compression, and dynamic compression and tensile tests with a split Hopkinson pressure bar.Based on the sandstone test results from this study and previous research,a step-by-step procedure for parameter calibration is outlined, which accounts for the categories of the strength surface, equation of state(EOS),strain rate effect, and damage. The calibrated parameters are verified through numerical tests that correspond to the experimental loading conditions.Consistency between numerical results and experimental data indicates the precision and reliability of the calibrated parameters. The methodology presented in this study is scientifically sound, straightforward, and essential for improving the TSID model.Furthermore,it has the potential to contribute to other rock constitutive models, particularly new user-defined models. 展开更多

Four key stress thresholds exist in the compression process of rocks,i.e.,crack closure stress(σ_(cc)),crack initiation stress(σ_(ci)),crack damage stress(σ_(cd))and compressive strength(σ_(c)).The quantitative identifications of the first three stress thresholds are of great significance for characterizing the microcrack growth and damage evolution of rocks under compression. In this paper,a new method based on damage constitutive model is proposed to quantitatively measure the stress thresholds of rocks.Firstly, two different damage constitutive models were constructed based on acoustic emission(AE)counts and Weibull distribution function considering the compaction stages of the rock and the bearing capacity of the damage element. Then, the accumulative AE counts method(ACLM),AE count rate method(CRM)and constitutive model method(CMM)were introduced to determine the stress thresholds of rocks. Finally, the stress thresholds of 9 different rocks were identified by ACLM,CRM,and CMM.The results show that the theoretical stress−strain curves obtained from the two damage constitutive models are in good agreement with that of the experimental data, and the differences between the two damage constitutive models mainly come from the evolutionary differences of the damage variables. The results of the stress thresholds identified by the CMM are in good agreement with those identified by the AE methods,i.e.,ACLM and CRM.Therefore, the proposed CMM can be used to determine the stress thresholds of rocks. 展开更多

According to a high-temperature compression test of rare earth magnesium alloy(WE43),a strain-compensated constitutive model of the Arrhenius equation based on Zener-Hollomon parameters was established, and the rheological behaviors were predicted. The model exhibited relatively serious prediction distortion in the low-temperature and high-strain rate parameter interval, and its accuracy was still unsatisfactory even after modification by a correction operator considering the coupling of temperature and strain rate. The microstructure characterization and statistical analysis showed that a large number of twinning occurred in the parameter intervals with prediction deviation. The occurrence of twinning complicated the local internal stress distribution by drastically changing the crystal orientation and led to significant fluctuations in the macroscopic strain-stress and hardening curves relative to the rheological processes dominated by the dislocation and softening mechanisms, making the logarithm of the strain rate and stress deviate from the linear relationship. This twinning phenomenon was greatly influenced by the temperature and strain rate.Herein, the influence mechanism on twinning behavior was analyzed from the perspective of the interaction of dislocation and twinning. 展开更多

Some rock joints exhibit significant brittleness, characterized by a sharp decrease in shear stress upon reaching the peak strength. However, existing models often fail to accurately represent this behavior and are encumbered by numerous parameters lacking clear mechanical significance. This study presents a new statistical damage constitutive model rooted in both damage mechanics and statistics, containing only three model parameters. The proposed model encompasses all stages of joint shearing, including the compaction stage, linear stage, plastic yielding stage, drop stage, strain softening stage, and residual strength stage. To derive the analytical expression of the constitutive model, three boundary conditions are introduced.Experimental data from both natural and artificial rock joints is utilized to validate the model, resulting in average absolute relative errors ranging from 3%to 8%.Moreover,a comparative analysis with established models illustrates that the proposed model captures stress drop and post-peak strain softening more effectively, with model parameters possessing clearer mechanical interpretations.Furthermore, parameter analysis is conducted to investigate the impacts of model parameters on the curves and unveil the relationship between these parameters and the mechanical properties of rock joints.Importantly, the proposed model is straightforward in form, and all model parameters can be obtained from direct shear tests, thus facilitating the utilization in numerical simulations. 展开更多
