This article is concerned with the numerical investigation of one-dimensional population balance models for batch crystallization process with fines dissolution. In batch crystallization, dissolution of smaller unwanted nuclei below some critical size is of vital importance as it improves the quality of product. The crystal growth rates for both size-independent and size-dependent cases are considered.A delay in recycle pipe is also included in the model. The space–time conservation element and solution element method, originally derived for non-reacting flows,is used to solve the model. This scheme has already been applied to a range of PDEs,mainly in the area of fluid mechanics. The numerical results are compared with those obtained from the Koren scheme, showing that the proposed scheme is more efficient. 展开更多

In the present paper, a three-dimensional (3D) Eulerian technique for the 3D numerical simulation of high-velocity impact problems is proposed. In the Eulerian framework, a complete 3D conservation element and solution element scheme for conservative hyperbolic governing equations with source terms is given. A modified ghost fluid method is proposed for the treatment of the boundary conditions. Numerical simulations of the Taylor bar problem and the ricochet phenomenon of a sphere impacting a plate target at an angle of 60~ are carried out. The numerical results are in good agreement with the corresponding experimental observations. It is proved that our computational technique is feasible for analyzing 3D high-velocity impact problems. 展开更多

The genetic information coded in DNA leads to trait innovation via a gene regulatory network(GRN)in development. Here,we developed a conserved non-coding element interpretation method to integrate multi-omics data into gene regulatory network(CNEReg)to investigate the ruminant multi-chambered stomach innovation. We generated paired expression and chromatin accessibility data during rumen and esophagus development in sheep, and revealed 1601 active ruminantspecific conserved non-coding elements(active-RSCNEs).To interpret the function of these activeRSCNEs,we defined toolkit transcription factors(TTFs)and modeled their regulation on rumenspecific genes via batteries of active-RSCNEs during development. Our developmental GRN revealed 18 TTFs and 313 active-RSCNEs regulating 7 rumen functional modules.Notably,6 TTFs(OTX1,SOX21,HOXC8,SOX2,TP63,and PPARG),as well as 16 active-RSCNEs,functionally distinguished the rumen from the esophagus. Our study provides a systematic approach to understanding how gene regulation evolves and shapes complex traits by putting evo-devo concepts into practice with developmental multi-omics data. 展开更多

Jerboas is a lineage of small rodents displaying atypical mouse-like morphology with elongated strong hindlimbs and short forelimbs. They have evolved obligate bipedal saltation and acute senses, and been well-adapted to vast desert-like habitats.Using a newly sequenced chromosome-scale genome of the Mongolian five-toed jerboa(Orientallactaga sibirica),our comparative genomic analyses and in vitro functional assays showed that the genetic innovations in both protein-coding and non-coding regions played an important role in jerboa morphological and physiological adaptation.Jerboa-specific amino acid substitutions, and segment insertions/deletions(indels)in conserved non-coding elements(CNEs)were found in components of proteoglycan biosynthesis pathway(XYLT1 and CHSY1),which plays an important role in limb development.Meanwhile,we found specific evolutionary changes functionally associated with energy or water metabolism(e.g.,specific amino acid substitutions in ND5 and indels in CNEs physically near ROR2)and senses(e.g.,expansion of vomeronasal receptors and the FAM136A gene family)in jerboas.Further dual-luciferase reporter assay verified that some of the CNEs with jerboa-specific segment indels exerted a significantly different influence on luciferase activity, suggesting changes in their regulatory function in jerboas. Our results revealed the potential molecular mechanisms underlying jerboa adaptation since the divergence from the Eocene-Oligocene transition, and provided more resources and new insights to enhance our understanding of the molecular basis underlying the phenotypic diversity and the environmental adaptation of mammals. 展开更多

Plant root-nodule symbiosis(RNS)with mutualistic nitrogen-fixing bacteria is restricted to a single clade of angiosperms, the Nitrogen-Fixing Nodulation Clade(NFNC),and is best understood in the legume family.Nodulating species share many commonalities, explained either by divergence from a common ancestor over 100 million years ago or by convergence following independent origins over that same time period.Regardless, comparative analyses of diverse nodulation syndromes can provide insights into constraints on nodulation—what must be acquired or cannot be lost for a functional symbiosis—and the latitude for Plant Communications Genomic landscape of nodulation variation in the symbiosis. However, much remains to be learned about nodulation, especially outside of legumes. Here,we employed a large-scale phylogenomic analysis across 88 species, complemented by 151 RNA-seq libraries,to elucidate the evolution of RNS.Our phylogenomic analyses further emphasize the uniqueness of the transcription factor NIN as a master regulator of nodulation and identify key muta-tions that affect its function across the NFNC.Comparative transcriptomic assessment revealed nodule-specific upregulated genes across diverse nodulating plants, while also identifying nodule-specific and nitrogen-response genes.Approximately 70%of symbiosis-related genes are highly conserved in the four representative species, whereas defense-related and host-range restriction genes tend to be lineage specific. Our study also identified over 900000 conserved non-coding elements(CNEs),over 300000 of which are unique to sampled NFNC species.NFNC-specific CNEs are enriched with the active H3K9ac mark and are correlated with accessible chromatin regions, thus representing a pool of candidate regula-tory elements for genes involved in RNS.Collectively, our results provide novel insights into the evolution of nodulation and lay a foundation for engineering of RNS traits in agriculturally important crops. 展开更多

In this paper, the authors discuss a three-dimensional problem of the semiconductor device type involved its mathematical description, numerical simulation and theoretical analysis. Two important factors, heat and magnetic influences are involved. The mathematical model is formulated by four nonlinear partial differential equations(PDEs),determining four major physical variables. The influences of magnetic fields are supposed to be weak, and the strength is parallel to the z-axis.The elliptic equation is treated by a block-centered method, and the law of conservation is preserved. The computational accuracy is improved one order.Other equations are convection-dominated,thus are approximated by upwind block-centered differences.Upwind difference can eliminate numerical dispersion and nonphysical oscillation. The diffusion is approximated by the block-centered difference, while the convection term is treated by upwind approximation.Furthermore, the unknowns and adjoint functions are computed at the same time. These characters play important roles in numerical computations of conductor device problems.Using the theories of priori analysis such as energy estimates, the principle of duality and mathematical inductions,an optimal estimates result is obtained. Then a composite numerical method is shown for solving this problem. 展开更多

A kind of conservative upwind method is discussed for chemical oil recovery displacement in porous media. The mathematical model is formulated by a nonlinear convection-diffusion system dependent on the pressure,Darcy velocity, concentration and saturations. The flow equation is solved by a conservative block-centered method, and the pressure and Darcy velocity are obtained at the same time. The concentration and saturations are determined by convection-dominated diffusion equations,so an upwind approximation is adopted to eliminate numerical dispersion and nonphysical oscillation.Block-centered method is conservative locally. An upwind method with block-centered difference is used for computing the concentration. The saturations of different components are solved by the method of upwind fractional step difference, and the computational work is shortened significantly by dividing a three-dimensional problem into three successive one-dimensional problems and using the method of speedup.Using the variation discussion, energy estimates, the method of duality, and the theory of a priori estimates,we complete numerical analysis. Finally, numerical tests are given for showing the computational accuracy, efficiency and practicability of our approach. 展开更多

This study was conducted to identify the origin, hydrogeochemical processes and evolution of groundwater in a tectonic valley. This study was carried out with the aim of quantifying the proportions of groundwater flows contributing to the water chemistry abstracted in a zone of convergence favored by the presence of active faults. The study area is located in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. End members methodology was applied to identify the mixing of hydrothermal with fresh groundwater, where changes in the aquifer geology result in distinct groundwater chemical signatures. Ternary mixing was quantified using conservative elements. Moreover, other evolutionary processes, such as ion exchange and silicate weathering occur due to changes in the geology of the area. In ternary mixing, each of the end members is associated with the lithology through which it circulates. The local flow contributes 70% of the water to the system, the intermediate flow contributes 14%, and the regional flow contributes 16%. Three types of water are produced: Na-HCO3, due to the interaction of water with volcanic rocks of rhyolitic composition, Na-Mg-HCO3, due to the interaction of water with volcanic rocks of basaltic-andesite composition, and Ca-HCO3, due to the interaction of water with sedimentary calcareous rocks. 展开更多

We present a newly developed global magnetohydrodynamic(MHD) model to study the responses of the Earth's magnetosphere to the solar wind. The model is established by using the space-time conservation element and solution element(CESE) method in general curvilinear coordinates on a six-component grid system. As a preliminary study, this paper is to present the model's numerical results of the quasi-steady state and the dynamics of the Earth's magnetosphere under steady solar wind flow with due northward interplanetary magnetic field(IMF). The model results are found to be in good agreement with those published by other numerical magnetospheric models. 展开更多
