The geometry of specimens is an axisymmetric solid cylinder with a two-dimensional gradient. The elastoplastic constitutive relationship is developed by constraint factors. Numerical results show that compressive stresses occur in the surface zone and tensile stresses in the cobalt rich zone when the temperature drops from the initial stress-free temperature of 800 to 0℃. The maximum value of the surface compressive stress is 254 MPa and the maximum value of the tensile stress is 252 MPa in the cobalt rich zones. When the cobalt concentration difference in the specimens is equal to or greater than 0.3, there is pronounced plastic flow in cobalt rich zone. When the temperature heats up from 0 to 800 ℃, the total plastic strain reaches 0.001 4. Plastic flow has a significant effect on the reduction of thermal stress concentration.展开更多

Experiment results show how geometry aspects of hexagonal paper honeycombs, e.g. the height of paper honeycomb, the thickness and length of honeycomb cell-wall, the drawing ratio of hexagonal honeycomb, affect the compressive properties of the paper honeycombs. It is in good agreement with the theory model. The constraint factor K of the critical buckling stress is mainly determined by the length of honeycomb cell-wail. It can be described as K=1.54 for B type paper honeycombs and K=3.32 for D type paper honeycombs. The plateau stress is the power exponent function of the thickness to length ratio of honeycomb cell-wall, and the experiment results show that the constant is 13.2 and the power exponent is 1.77. The research results can be used to characterize and improve efficiently the compressive properties of paper honeycombs.展开更多

In the proposed algorithm, various features are formed into searchable shape features bythe feature modeling technology, and the models of feature elements are established. The feature elements thatmeet the design requirements are found by employing a feature matching technology, and the constraint factorscombined with the pseudo density of elements are initialized according to the optimized feature elements. Then, through controlling the constraint factors and utilizing the optimization criterion method along with the filteringtechnology of independent mesh, the structural design optimization is implemented. The present feature modelingapproach is applied to the feature-based structural topology optimization using empirical data. Meanwhile, theimproved mathematical model based on the density method with the constraint factors and the correspondingsolution processes are also presented. Compared with the traditional method which requires complicated constraintprocessing, the present approach is flexibly applied to the 3D structural design optimization with added holesby changing the constraint factors, thus it can design a structure with predetermined features more directly andeasily. Numerical examples show effectiveness of the proposed feature modeling approach, which is suitable for thepractical engineering design.展开更多

This model shows a promising capability of explaining various fatigue phenomena. The new crack growth model is further completed by a continuous empirical formula for estimating the value of variable fracture toughness during crack propagation and a modified continuous equation for the crack tip stress/strain constraint factor used to calculate the stress intensity factor at the opening level. The prediction results are proved to agree well with the observed phenomena in test.展开更多

In this paper, ball indentation on a powder bed is evaluated for flow characterisation of small quantities of cohesive powders at low levels of consolidation pressures. In parallel, the bulk powder is subjected to the common test method of unconfined direct compression. Analogous to indentation hardness testing, for which the indentation pressure is related to the flow stress, a constraint factor (C) is defined relating the unconfined yield stress and indentation pres- sure. The constraint factors for the test powders have been evaluated, enabling an easy method to characterize the flow behaviour of cohesive powders.展开更多
