Based on 50 civil engineering projects in Libya from the database of the Great Man-Made River System 1992-2009, the models identified extension as a main factor that affecting both the actual duration and cost of a project, while considering the contract cost and contract duration as fixed for the project. The suitability of each model was confirmed by examining RMSE (root mean squared error), NSE (Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency), and MEF (modeling efficiency factor). The models were validated with data from 17 different projects. The validation of both models demonstrated that models are very practical and accurate. The models are very effective in capturing the uniqueness of Libyan construction industry practice.展开更多
More than two decades ago, object-oriented representation of AEC (architecture engineering and construction) projects started to offer the promise of seamless communication of semantic data models between computer-b...More than two decades ago, object-oriented representation of AEC (architecture engineering and construction) projects started to offer the promise of seamless communication of semantic data models between computer-based systems used from the design stage to the operation of the facilities. BIM (building information modelling) emerged and appeared as a means to store all relevant data generated during the life-cycle of the facilities. But this upstream view of the built environment, arising from the design and construction stages, extended to the downstream operations where building and industrial facilities appeared more and more as huge dynamic data producers and concentrators while being operated. This created new challenges leading to what is referred to as ISCs (intelligent and smart constructions). The current state of the art is that final constructions still contain various and increasingly versatile control and service systems, which are hardly standardised, and not interconnected among themselves. Monitoring, maintenance and services are done by specialised companies, each responsible of different systems, which are relying on customised software and techniques to meet specific user needs and are based on monolithic applications that require manual configuration for specific uses, maintenance and support. We demonstrate in this paper that the early promises of integration across the actors and along the life-time of facilities have gone a long way but will only be delivered through enhanced standardisation of computerized models, representations, services and operations still not yet fully accomplished 25 years after work started.展开更多

Results indicate that students at all three universities appreciate the importance of the development of sustainable construction and have positive attitudes with regards to sustainability. Introduction: Work-related accidents are frequent and serious in the construction sector. The aim of the study was to determine the frequency and factors associated with occupational accidents on the construction site...Introduction: Work-related accidents are frequent and serious in the construction sector. The aim of the study was to determine the frequency and factors associated with occupational accidents on the construction site of a referral hospital in Benin. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out. The sample size was calculated using the Schwartz form adjusted for the number of workers on site and was 129 workers. Random sampling was used. The dependent variable was work-related accidents. The other variables were socio-demographic and occupational characteristics. Data were collected through a questionnaire survey. Medians and proportions were calculated. An association was sought using Chi-square and Fisher tests with a threshold of p Results: A total of 132 workers were included. Their median age was 30 years with an ITQ of [27 - 38];men were the most represented 126 (95.45%) with a level of education higher than or equal to high school in 101 (76.52%) and in the majority with a permanent status 85 (64.39%). Seniority of more than 5 years was observed in 92 (69.7%). Workers working more than 8 hours of overtime per week numbered 57 (43.18%). Exposure to vibrating objects was 49 (37.12%). In terms of psychosocial constraints, 82.58% had high psychological demands;79.53% low decision-making latitude;50.76% low social support. The frequency of work-related accidents was 6.82%, and the only associated factor was the type of worker (p = 0.016). On the other hand, there were 10.2% accidents among workers handling vibrating objects versus 4.98% among those not using them. With regard to psychosocial constraints, the following frequencies were recorded respectively: 6.42% among those with high psychological demand versus 8.7% among those with low psychological demand;7.62% among those with low decision-making latitude versus 3.7% among those with high decision-making latitude;8.96% among those with low social support versus 4.62% among those with high support. This research is based on a qualitative approach based on the exploitation of secondary data.The objective of the research is to determine the factors likely to influence the success of innovation in small and medium ...This research is based on a qualitative approach based on the exploitation of secondary data.The objective of the research is to determine the factors likely to influence the success of innovation in small and medium enterprises(SMEs)of Building and Public Works(BTP)in Burkina Faso.To do this,we issued two research proposals that served as a guide for our research.It emerged that 77% of SMEs reported having innovated in 2019,while the same study concluded to the underperformance of these companies.Hence,there is the need to distinguish between innovation actions and the success of innovation.For us,the success of innovation is based on information transparency in the company and the development of human resources.The results showed that the information does not circulate the construction companies and it results in a lack of meeting place.In addition,construction and civil engineering SMEs lack competent and qualified staff and are not very motivated.Indeed,only 52% of business leaders are satisfied with the motivation of their staff.In terms of competence,97% business leaders say that they have qualified staff and even 87% say not to delegate because they lack qualified staff.In fact,obtaining approval requires the existence of qualified personnel in the company,which justifies this assertion to 97%.And yet,the staff presented for the approval is not the one available in the company.Moreover,the lack of competent and motivated staff is confirmed by the MOE and MOD.Our two research proposals have been validated.However,we noted that this is a partial search for the factors that influence the success of innovation in construction SMEs that could be complemented by other research.展开更多

More and more architecture, engineering, and construction companies are adopting new technologies in software design to help accelerate and accurately carry out their functions. Based on a research study carried out in Southern Nevada with a questionnaire survey of 54 construction-related firms, this study aims to compare the types and extent of IT use by architects, engineers, and contractors. It also explores the level of IT skills possessed by professionals working in the industry. The study found that architects mostly used design software whereas engineers and contractors used scheduling and estimating software. All of the respondents believed that IT helped to improve their work productivity. The majority of the respondents thought that IT is useful for Construction Management (CM) students: engineers and architects thought that CM students should take more scheduling and estimating software courses and contractors thought that they should take more scheduling and quantity take-off software courses.展开更多
The waste-to-energy(WTE)technologies are now recovering energy and materials from over 300 million tonnes of municipal solid wastes worldwide.Extensive studies have investigated substituting natural construction mater...The waste-to-energy(WTE)technologies are now recovering energy and materials from over 300 million tonnes of municipal solid wastes worldwide.Extensive studies have investigated substituting natural construction materials with WTE residues to relieve the environmental cost of natural resource depletion.This study examined the beneficial uses of WTE residues in civil engineering applications and the corresponding environmental standards in Europe,the U.S.,and China.This review presents the opportunities and challenges for current technical approaches and the environmental standards to be met to stabilize WTE residues.The principal characteristics of WTE residues(bottom ash and fly ash)and the possible solutions for their beneficial use in developed and developing countries are summarized.The leaching procedures and environmental standards for pH,heavy metals,and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans(PCDD/Fs)are compared.The current practice and engineering properties of materials using WTE residues,including mixtures with stone aggregate or sand,cement-based or hot-mix asphalt concrete(pavement),fill material in the embankments,substitute of Portland cement or clinker production,and ceramic-based materials(bricks and lightweight aggregate)are comprehensively reviewed.展开更多

文摘This research is based on a qualitative approach based on the exploitation of secondary data.The objective of the research is to determine the factors likely to influence the success of innovation in small and medium enterprises(SMEs)of Building and Public Works(BTP)in Burkina Faso.To do this,we issued two research proposals that served as a guide for our research.It emerged that 77% of SMEs reported having innovated in 2019,while the same study concluded to the underperformance of these companies.Hence,there is the need to distinguish between innovation actions and the success of innovation.For us,the success of innovation is based on information transparency in the company and the development of human resources.The results showed that the information does not circulate the construction companies and it results in a lack of meeting place.In addition,construction and civil engineering SMEs lack competent and qualified staff and are not very motivated.Indeed,only 52% of business leaders are satisfied with the motivation of their staff.In terms of competence,97% business leaders say that they have qualified staff and even 87% say not to delegate because they lack qualified staff.In fact,obtaining approval requires the existence of qualified personnel in the company,which justifies this assertion to 97%.And yet,the staff presented for the approval is not the one available in the company.Moreover,the lack of competent and motivated staff is confirmed by the MOE and MOD.Our two research proposals have been validated.However,we noted that this is a partial search for the factors that influence the success of innovation in construction SMEs that could be complemented by other research.
文摘Green Building involves many parties and has attracted attention recently. In this paper, the main external actors for Green Building were explored based on literature review. Then, a structured questionnaire was developed to facilitate systematic data collection. Finally, a stepwise multiple regression analysis was applied and “clients,” “government,” “qualified/certified materials and products suppliers,” and “good green consultants” were found to be significant external partners of Architecture/Engineering/Construction (AEC) firms for successful delivery of Green Mark certified projects. The research findings will help AEC firms understand how to achieve competitive advantages in the Green Building market in Singapore by using external resources.
文摘The use of information technology (IT) in construction is expanding rapidly. More and more architecture, engineering, and construction companies are adopting new technologies in software design to help accelerate and accurately carry out their functions. Based on a research study carried out in Southern Nevada with a questionnaire survey of 54 construction-related firms, this study aims to compare the types and extent of IT use by architects, engineers, and contractors. It also explores the level of IT skills possessed by professionals working in the industry. The study found that architects mostly used design software whereas engineers and contractors used scheduling and estimating software. All of the respondents believed that IT helped to improve their work productivity. The majority of the respondents thought that IT is useful for Construction Management (CM) students: engineers and architects thought that CM students should take more scheduling and estimating software courses and contractors thought that they should take more scheduling and quantity take-off software courses.
文摘The waste-to-energy(WTE)technologies are now recovering energy and materials from over 300 million tonnes of municipal solid wastes worldwide.Extensive studies have investigated substituting natural construction materials with WTE residues to relieve the environmental cost of natural resource depletion.This study examined the beneficial uses of WTE residues in civil engineering applications and the corresponding environmental standards in Europe,the U.S.,and China.This review presents the opportunities and challenges for current technical approaches and the environmental standards to be met to stabilize WTE residues.The principal characteristics of WTE residues(bottom ash and fly ash)and the possible solutions for their beneficial use in developed and developing countries are summarized.The leaching procedures and environmental standards for pH,heavy metals,and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans(PCDD/Fs)are compared.The current practice and engineering properties of materials using WTE residues,including mixtures with stone aggregate or sand,cement-based or hot-mix asphalt concrete(pavement),fill material in the embankments,substitute of Portland cement or clinker production,and ceramic-based materials(bricks and lightweight aggregate)are comprehensively reviewed.
文摘With the continuous development of civil engineering,concrete crack treatment technology has become an important research field.This paper proposes treatment techniques for different types of cracks,including the prevention and repair of surface cracks,the reinforcement and grouting of structural cracks,and the design and construction of controlled cracks through the analysis of the causes and classification of concrete cracks.The methods and suggestions proposed in this paper are practical and can improve the quality and safety of buildings.
