The Contributions of Building Information Modelling to Sustainable Construction

Global concerns toward environmental issues have induced growing demand for new approaches in the construction because of its considerable impact on the environment and use of natural resources. Through using construction sustainability tools, methods and techniques, a greener design can be applied during various building phases. In this connection, it is argued that the analytical and integrated models applied by Building Information Modelling (BIM) may also facilitate this process to be performed more efficiently. BIM and construction sustainability are quite different initiatives, but both have received much attention in recent years in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry. A rigorous analysis of the interactions between them implies that a synergy exists which, if properly it is understood that can be helpful to reduce the environmental impacts of the AEC industry. A BIM-based design model can contribute to sustainability through its three main dimensions which are environmental, economic and social. In this paper, by reviewing the existing literature on BIM and construction sustainability and using a matrix to analyze construction sustainability dimensions and BIM functionalities a number of interactions have been discussed. It can be concluded that despite there are many improvements in implementation of BIM in environmental and economic aspects of sustainability, its potential impact on social dimension has not been explicitly explored hence further studies need to be undertaken in this area. 展开更多

Drawing on resource dependence theory, this paper develops and empirically tests a model for understanding how the implementation of building information modeling(BIM) in construction projects impacts the performance of different project participating organizations through improving their interorganizational collaboration capabilities. Based on two sets of survey data collected from designers and general contractors in BIMbased construction projects in China, the results from partial least squares analysis and bootstrapping mediation test provide clear evidence that BIM-enabled capabilities of information sharing and collaborative decision-making as a whole play a significant role in determining BIMenabled efficiency and effectiveness benefits for both designers and general contractors. The results further reveal that designers and general contractors benefit from project BIM implementation activities significantly nonequivalently, and that this non-equivalence closely relates to the different roles played by designers and general contractors in BIM-enabled interorganizational resource exchange processes. The findings validate the resource dependence theory perspective of BIM as a boundary spanning tool to manage interorganizational resource dependence in construction projects, and contribute todeepened understandings of how and why project participating organizations benefit differently from the implementation of interorganizational information technologies like BIM. 展开更多

The field of architecture,engineering,and construction(AEC)is continually striving to use resources efficiently and manage complex processes.Now more than ever,there is a strong need for digital transformation in AEC.The improvement in the accessibility of consumer-based head-mounted displays(HMD)is attracting different entertainment and research fields to immersive virtual reality(VR)applications.Building Information Modeling(BIM)is known as a promising technology in AEC.The full potential of BIM is not yet employed to empower this field,however,and this could be a result of some barriers still to be surmounted by BIM in both technological and management perspectives.One of these barriers is the communication and collaboration between design,construction,operation,and maintenance phases.VR can fill this gap by providing additional capabilities for BIM which either were not available before or were not possible to employ in practical ways.In this paper,we systematically review recent research around the application of VR in BIM and discuss the results using the PRISMA flowchart.We discuss the most commonly used technologies,software,and evaluation methods and the various applications of VR in the reviewed papers.Finally,we extend the discussion by summarizing the potential future work in this area. 展开更多

The integration of building information modeling(BIM)and lean construction(LC)provides a solution for the management of megaprojects.Previous studies have generally focused on the theoretical or empirical adoption of BIM and LC.Moreover,only a few studies have examined the approach of simultaneously using BIM and LC in megaprojects.Therefore,an intensive study on the application of BIM and LC in megaprojects,particularly to explore considerably effective integrated application modes of BIM and LC in megaprojects,will substantially promote the management efficiency of megaprojects.The current study describes a method that integrates owner-dominated BIM and LC that was developed in a case study.The proposed method provides a framework for all stakeholders to use BIM and LC in a megaproject dominated by the owner.The interactional relations among the owner,BIM,and LC were analyzed and positive interactions were identified.These positive interactions served as a basis for the implementation of this integrated approach in a case study and could be applied to other megaprojects.The megaproject(i.e.,airport construction project)was examined to verify the performance of the developed method.Results showed that the integration of BIM and LC dominated by the owner can improve management performance and achieve high quality standard. 展开更多

Due to the rapid adoption of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry, many construction management (CM) programs in the US have introduced BIM in their curriculum. Previous research has revealed that most of the BIM courses offered in CM programs have mainly focused on modeling skills as well as BIM applications in scheduling and estimating. While these topics appear to be important to apply BIM technology, students will not be able to fully understand the BIM process in a construction project without knowing the fundamental workflow of BIM. This paper presents a modular BIM course which was developed to help CM students better understand the BIM workflow and focuses on advanced uses of BIM in construction projects. The course contains three modules: BIM workflow, basic BIM applications, and advanced BIM applications. The BIM workflow module discusses how BIM is addressed in project delivery method, contract, the execution plan, and team building. The basic BIM applications module explains the typical BIM applications in coordination, scheduling, estimating, logistics, visualization, etc. The advanced BIM applications module demonstrates the latest technology advances in the AEC industry that utilizes BIM applications, including laser scanning, virtual reality, and mixed reality. The course objectives and assessment methods ensure that CM students’ understanding of BIM will be considerably improved from as a modeling tools or software program to an efficient process, and their insights into BIM will be significantly broadened beyond the existing 3D, 4D, and 5D applications. The highly positive course evaluation demonstrates the effectiveness of these approaches in meeting course objectives, delivering course materials, as well as raising students’ interest. This paper will serve as a case study of an advanced level BIM course in CM programs. 展开更多

As the world pays more attention to low-earbon and sustainable development,there's a growing trend in architecture,engineering and construction fields to construct greener,more energy efficient and more sustainable buildings with the help of building information modeling(BIM).As BIM application becomes popular in industry,more and more scholars and engineers point out that an integrated construction environment is better for BIM's fully functional capability.This paper illustrates the relationship between BIM application and an integrated construction environment based on case survey data.It is found that even though an integration construction environment is not necessary in BIM application,the statistical results showed that DBB(design-bid-build)and CM(construction management)modes have great differences in BIM's application implementation scope and implementation deepness,while DB and CM modes do not. 展开更多

In the construction area,visuals such as drawings,photos,videos,and 3D models,play a significant role in the design,build and maintenance of a facility,bringing efficiency to generate,transfer,and store information.Advanced visual computing techniques facilitate the understanding of design contents,work plans,and other types of information shared in the construction industry.Automatic visual data collection and analysis provide many possibilities to the construction industry and a large number of works have investigated how visual computing can improve construction management processes and other problems in the construction area.However,a comprehensive literature review is needed.This study uses bibliometric approaches to review the works published to date,and analyses the development of knowledge,significant research results,and trends.The purpose of this study is to help newcomers to this research field understand knowledge structure and formulate research directions,thereby enhancing knowledge development.From this study,it can be concluded that computer vision is a key axis of improvement.Moreover,building information modeling,laser scanning,and other visualizationrelated techniques are also important in advancing the construction area. 展开更多

为了提高建筑施工安全风险管理的信息化水平,以建筑施工活动及事故风险类型为研究对象,建立施工安全知识图谱。通过知识图谱改进作业条件危险性评价法(LEC)实现安全风险的定量计算,并基于知识图谱进行风险位置识别和不安全因素分析。研... 为了提高建筑施工安全风险管理的信息化水平,以建筑施工活动及事故风险类型为研究对象,建立施工安全知识图谱。通过知识图谱改进作业条件危险性评价法(LEC)实现安全风险的定量计算,并基于知识图谱进行风险位置识别和不安全因素分析。研究提出安全风险虚体实化理念,实现了安全风险信息在数字空间实体化表达;基于建筑信息模型(Building Information Modeling, BIM)和知识图谱技术,建立了建筑施工安全风险信息模型(Building Construction Safety Risk Information Model, BCSRIM)。该模型有效避免了传统LEC法中主观因素产生的影响,实现了建筑施工安全风险定量计算、风险位置识别、风险分析及可视化管理。利用Revit二次开发技术,在Microsoft Visual Studio中使用C#语言连接Neo4j图数据库,完成了基于知识图谱的BCSRIM的开发。试验显示,研究提出的BCSRIM对提高施工现场的管理水平具有较高的实用价值。 展开更多

为提高重型施工机械安拆吊装作业安全工效,改善安拆作业过程中人员的可视性,提出基于可视锥法的多主体视觉可达性建筑信息模型(BIM)仿真方法。首先,通过重型施工机械视觉任务分解,得到重型施工机械多主体视觉任务;其次,以wk-35型电铲安... 为提高重型施工机械安拆吊装作业安全工效,改善安拆作业过程中人员的可视性,提出基于可视锥法的多主体视觉可达性建筑信息模型(BIM)仿真方法。首先,通过重型施工机械视觉任务分解,得到重型施工机械多主体视觉任务;其次,以wk-35型电铲安拆作业为研究对象,分析起重驾驶司机-信号工-司索工多主体视觉任务,运用计算机辅助三维交互应用(CATIA)人因仿真模块,构建安拆吊装作业多主体视觉的BIM仿真场景;然后,采用可视锥法,计算安拆吊装作业过程多主体视觉可达性量值,测度多主体视觉可达性水平,构建重型机械施工机械多主体视觉评价模型;最后,调节BIM模型的过程参数,推演多主体视觉变化趋势,评价安拆吊装作业多主体视觉可达性。结果表明:安拆作业中起重司机在起升下降过程中视觉可达性较差,在平移过程中视觉可达性较好;信号工和司索工的位置与其视觉可达性联系紧密,当信号工处于视野刚好覆盖起重司机和司索工的位置时,其视觉可达性最好,而司索工需不断调整位置,使其视觉可达性达到最佳。 展开更多

施工进度是工程项目管理的关键组成部分,传统的进度管理多依靠人工巡检,耗时费力且无法保障进度评估的时效性。为了实现施工进度的自动化、高效化监管,针对室内施工湿作业铺贴场景,提出一套智能化进度追踪与评估框架,基于改进的Mask R-... 施工进度是工程项目管理的关键组成部分,传统的进度管理多依靠人工巡检,耗时费力且无法保障进度评估的时效性。为了实现施工进度的自动化、高效化监管,针对室内施工湿作业铺贴场景,提出一套智能化进度追踪与评估框架,基于改进的Mask R-CNN深度学习框架,自动提取室内墙面和地面的瓷砖铺贴进度,基于相机轨迹追踪算法,将整个施工层的大范围施工进度识别结果映射至BIM可视化模型,为施工数字孪生奠定基础。在上海市某高层建筑项目中进行实例研究,实现了施工图像的高精度分割,验证了研究框架的可行性。该框架不仅适用于室内瓷砖铺贴,也适用于抹灰、刷涂等室内装修工程。 展开更多
