Aesthetical Meanings of the Central Notion Ti Ren in Cultivation Theory of Neo-Confucianism

Ti Ren體認is a commonly used and very important notion in traditional Chinese philosophy and intellectual history,nevertheless with its connotation unclear in the ancients’discourses.This text tries to analyze the method and process of this notion via the perspective of Neo-Confucianism in Song Dynasty.The basic hypothesis of this research is that Ti Ren is the basis of the cultivation theory that helps confucians improve their moral integrity.Under such assumption,this text proposes the core connotation of Ti Ren in Neo-Confucianism lies in personal grasp of the heavenly principle.Based on this,from Zhou Dunyi to Shao Yong,Zhang Zai and the Cheng brothers,this kind of grasp gradually developed into a clear clue from appreciation of objects to that of inner mind,and then epitomized by Zhu Xi.Zhu Xi’s Ti Ren consists of two approaches,extroversive and introversive,and built a way of self-cultivating to be the saint from methods like investigation of things and reading books to the realization of grasping saints’minds.The end of the road is the aesthetic world of eagles soaring in the sky and fishes diving in water,the great pleasure,and on passage,it is overflowing with both physical and spiritual feelings,so that we know Ti Ren possesses aesthetic meanings.Further,based on the differentiation and analysis of the connotation of this concept,this text preliminarily compares Zhu Xi’s Ti Ren with Gadamer’s“Erlebnis”,promoting the possibility of dialogue between east and west philosophy.

A Corpus Study of Acupuncture from the Perspective of Mass Media Based on the Corpus of Contemporary American English

Based on the Corpus of Contemporary American English(COCA),this study examines acupuncture from the perspective of mass media.Acupuncture has been circulating throughout the Chinese Cultural Circle since the Qin and Han Dynasties,and has since spread directly or indirectly to the rest of the world.The United States boasts the world’s second-largest acupuncture market,with its laws,regulations,industry growth,research,and education all positively influencing the development of acupuncture in other nations.This study uses COCA to analyze the form and content of acupuncture’s dissemination in eight different types of media.The findings show that acupuncture appears in COCA a total of 1,788 times,with the highest frequency in magazines,followed by blogs,and the lowest frequency in fiction.These findings reveal the popularity of acupuncture in mass media in the United States and provide empirical data and insights for the future dissemination and development of acupuncture in the United States.

CONTEMPORARY CLIMATIC CHANGE OVER THE QINGHAI-XIZANG PLATEAU AND ITS RESPONSE TO THE GREEN-HOUSE EFFECT

The knowledge of contemporary climatic change over the Qinghai Xizang (Tibet) Plateau (QXP) has been inadequate for a long time due to lack of enough observational data. In this paper, on the basis of monthly temperature and precipitation data in 1961-1990 from 48 stations on the QXP, the temperature data are extended backward to 1901 with an empirical orthogonal function (EOF) method, microscopic characteristics of contemporary climatic change over the QXP are analyzed, and the response of the plateau climate to global warming is discussed in combination with atmospheric general circulation model (GCM) outputs. The results show that the plateau climate, as a whole, has been warming since the early part of this century, that the precipitation has generally been increasing during the recent 30 years, and that these climatic trends seem to be related to the enhanced green house effect induced by increasing CO 2 concentration in the atmosphere.

Contemporary kinematic models and moment deficit of Chinese mainland

There are lots of achievements about kinematics of Chinese mainland and its vicinity determined from historic earthquake data, Quaternary fault rates and geodesy observations, which provide basic data for analysis of seismic hazard in study areas. Based on impreciseness in using energy of 47 earthquakes with magnitude greater than 7.0 in previous study, we firstly collected source parameters, surface ruptures and displacements of major earthquakes carefully, and divided them into small segmentations with these data gathered. Secondly, we determined contemporary deformation field from latest earthquake mechanisms, Quaternary fault slip rates and geodesy observations. Finally, we evaluated moment deficit of study areas from historic earthquake data and predicted deformation field, and removed 10 percent of aseismic deformation. Combining with previous results, we analyzed the seismic hazard of study areas. The results show that there are some areas with large moment deficit in Chinese mainland. There are also large moment deficit areas, including regions around the Ordos Block, southeastern coast of China and the Bakal rift zone. Previous studies show that there may be some potential earthquakes in the near future in Darts of areas mentioned above.

Contemporary approaches for imaging skeletal metastasis

The skeleton is a common site of cancer metastasis. Notably high incidences of bone lesions are found for breast, prostate, and renal carcinoma. Malignant bone tumors result in significant patient morbidity. Identification of these lesions is a critical step to accurately stratify patients, guide treatment course, monitor disease progression, and evaluate response to therapy. Diagnosis of cancer in the skeleton typically relies on indirect bone-targeted radiotracer uptake at sites of active bone remodeling. In this manuscript, we discuss established and emerging tools and techniques for detection of bone lesions, quantification of skeletal tumor burden, and current clinical challenges.

Contemporary Chinese Calligraphy Between Tradition and Innovation

Since the mid-1980s Chinese calligraphy art has undergone a radical change and has opened itself to experimentation. A vivid debate on CCC （Contemporary Chinese Calligraphy） （Zhongguo xiandai shufa） is involving art critics in China nowadays. WANG Dongling and the modernists think that, despite many changes and influences, we can still refer to the traditional calligraphic lexicon to describe the calligraphic production of contemporary Chinese art. They still remain deeply rooted in the signified system of Chinese writing, even if they break with the strict rules of Chinese classical aesthetic （contamination of Western elements and focus on the stylistic exploration）. WANG Nanming and the Avant-garde think that ＂contemporary calligraphy is not calligraphy yet＂： It is ＂anti-calligraphy＂, annihilates Chinese tradition, rejects the use of legible characters, experiments with new languages and new media within the idiom of international contemporary art. The result is the creation of works of art that could be assimilated to Abstract art, Abstract expressionism, Conceptual art, Performance art, Contemporary dance, Multimedia art, and even Street art. This paper aims at showing how still valid and extremely productive are both these two theoretical and creative/practical approaches to Chinese calligraphy in China nowadays. They turned the art of calligraphy into a medium for global comprehension and communication.

Environmental awareness and the contemporary society of China——an analysis and an understanding

This paper presents an understanding of the relationship between the environmental awareness(EA) and contemporary society of China. The EA of three of the major groups of Chinas society, namely intellectuals, government officials, and urban societies are characterized one by one. A number of factors of affecting the EA were investigated in details, the keys among which are the personal level of knowledge and morality, the social and economic development level, environmental codes, environment\|related professional and public regulations, different professional performances. Some policy proposals are finally provided for enhancing the EA of Chinas society.
