Context and Interaction in Second Language Teaching and Learning

In the process of the research of second language teaching and learning,people gradually find the influence of context as well as interaction,holding an idea that the language output and comprehension cannot be achieved without taking the context into consideration.In the second language teaching and learning classroom,the interaction among the learners and between learner and teacher pushes the development of second language learning to some degree.Combined with the concrete situation of second language teaching and learning in China,the essay points out some difficulties as well as put forwards some relevant suggestions after the literature reviews for the relevant researches in and out of China.

Motivation in Second Language Learning and English Teaching

It is believed that individual learner variables influence learning outcomes.Thevariables have been categorized into cognitive variables,affective variables and personality var-iables.Of affective variables,motivation has been thought to play a most important role in L2learning.Therefore,a further study of motivation can really help a lotin English teaching.Thearticle states the information of motivation and its influence on English language teaching.

FIRST LANGUAGE ACQUISITION AS A MODEL FOR SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION: THE TOTAL PHYSICAL RESPONSE APPROACH IN SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNING AND TEACHING

L1 and L2 acquisition, in some respects, are similar. Language development in children goes hand in hand with physical and cognitive development. Children learn their first language by imitation, but not always and not only by imitation. There seems to be some "innate capacities" that make children start to speak at the same time they do and in the way they do it. Adults learning a second language usually are controlled more by their motivation. But language input is important for both L1 and L2 acquisition. Though there are differences between CL1 and between CL2 and AL2, the way in which these learners acquire some of the grammatical morphemes is similar. This, together with some other evidence, shows that it is not only children who can acquire language. Adults can also acquire a language. But when adults acquire a language, they should also learn it. Some of the ways in which children acquire their language can be used as a model for L2 acquisition, even for Chinese students whose language is unrelated to English and whose culture is different. Learning the culture of the English-speaking countries will benefit the learning of the language. Like children, listening should also be well in advance of speaking in L2 acquisition. To train listening comprehension skills, Asher’s TPR approach proves more effective. TPR approach is at the moment limited to the beginning stage only. In order for students to gain all the five skills in a second language learning, namely, listening, speaking, reading, writing, and interpreting/translating, other methods should be used at the same time, or at later stages.

Applying Nearpod to the Teaching Chinese as a Second Language Class to Enhance Interactions and Collaborations in the Secondary Schools

The quick spread of the epidemic since 2019 together with fast advancing of technology has exposed teachers to online education,including Teaching Chinese as a Second Language(TCSL)classrooms.Some Chinese as a Second Language(CSL)teachers were reluctant to utilize technology tools in their teaching due to the lack of technological knowledge.Thus,this study designed a CSL curriculum with the lens of the TPACK framework(Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge).Nearpod was specifically adopted as a web-based technology tool to support the teaching Chinese language due to its powerful functions provided.Nearpod allows teachers to design interactive activities in multiple ways to facilitate interactions and collaboration in the CSL learning process.This paper aimed to help Chinese teachers improve their understanding of how to effectively integrate technology into CSL teaching.Chinese teachers will develop a deeper comprehension of distance teaching from the perspectives of technology,pedagogy,and content knowledge,enhance students’deeper learning,and promote interaction and collaboration in L2 class.The effective use of the technology can develop language skills in a meaningful context knowledge with the guidance of pedagogical content knowledge.

A Brief Study of Second Language Learning Strategies From the Perspective of Error Analysis

Language teaching is not a one-way process.It interacts with language learning in an extremely intricate way.To improve language teaching,we need to take the process of language learning into account.This paper tries to explore and understand what strategies the second language learners consciously or subconsciously adopt during their language learning process through the analyses of the linguistic errors they commit,so as to provide some insights into language teaching practice.

Teaching about Different Lifestyles in Second Language Learning

Cultural learning is an indispensible part in both first and second language learning.One cannot learn a language without learning the culture where it operates.This literature review aims to clarify the relationship between language and culture and arouse language teachers' consciousness of the benefits of integrating cultural teaching into language learning in second language classrooms by addressing the question:What are the benefits of combining language teaching and cultural teaching? Consequently it explains the nature of different lifestyles in different cultures and the process of second language learning.Also,it explores the significance of cultural awareness in second language learning and teaching and the strategies to incorporate lifestyles into second language teaching.The findings of this literature review strongly suggest the importance for second language teachers to incorporate culture into classroom teaching.Learning a second language cannot be separated from learning the target culture which facilitates successful language learning and reduces prejudice,misunderstanding and stereotyped notions towards the target language group.

Cooperative Language Learning in Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling

TPRS(Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling)is becoming widely recognized and implemented in K-12 language classrooms across the nation.Cooperative language learning structures interactive group work for learners’language development.In communicative language classrooms,cooperative learning can be implemented in TPRS to encourage students’interaction and communication in collaborative tasks.This article explores the application of cooperative language learning in the TPRS Chinese classroom.Specific teaching methods are discussed in each step of TPRS,including establishing meaning,story asking,and story reading.Cooperative language learning in TPRS increases students’engagement and motivation in language learning and promotes their language acquisition and intercultural awareness for communicative competence in a diverse society.

This paper introduces a field of educational research called teacher learning as it applies to the teaching of second languages. Untilrecently, the study of second language teacher education is focused mainly on the knowledge base and teaching skills of teachers and teachers-inpreparation. The collection thus helps establish a research base for teacher learning within second language teacher education.

An Analysis of Michael Long’s Interaction Hypothesis in Second Language Acquisition

The Interaction Hypothesis,which was first advanced by Michael Long,is considered as a further supplement or extension of the Input Hypothesis in the field of second language acquisition. This paper explains the main claims of Michael Long's Interaction Hypothesis,the three steps to study how input and interaction affect the acquisition of a second language,and the importance of the interactional modifications applied by both participants of the interaction. Emphasis is placed on the evaluation of the theory as well as its relation to second language teaching,with many researchers' findings and arguments discussed as supporting evidence. It aims to help the effective application of this theory in second language teaching.

Foreign Language Web-Based Learning by Means of Audiovisual Interactive Activities

Online learning has been on an upward trend for many years and is becoming more and more prevalent every day, consistently presenting the less privileged parts of our society with an equal opportunity at education. Unfortunately, though, it seldom takes advantage of the new technologies and capabilities offered by the modern World Wide Web. In this article, we present an interactive online platform that provides users with learning activities for students of English as a foreign language. The platform focuses on using audiovisual multimedia content and a user experience (UX) centered approach to provide learners with an enhanced learning experience that aims at improving their knowledge level while at the same time increasing their engagement and motivation to participate in learning. To achieve this, the platform uses advanced techniques, such as interactive vocabulary and pronunciation assistance, mini-games, embedded media, voice recording, and more. In addition, the platform provides educators with analytics about user engagement and performance. In this study, more than 100 young students participated in a preliminary use of the aforementioned platform and provided feedback concerning their experience. Both the platform’s metrics and the user-provided feedback indicated increased engagement and a preference of the participants for interactive audiovisual multimedia-based learning activities.

Comparison between Input Hypothesis and Interaction Hypothesis

Second Language Acquisition has received more and more attention since 1950 s when it becomes an autonomous field of research. Linguists have carried out many theoretical and empirical studies with a sharp purpose to promote Second Language Acquisition. Krashen's Input Hypothesis and Long's Interaction Hypothesis are most influential ones among the studies. They both play important roles in language teaching and learning. The paper will present an account of the two great theories, including the main claims, theoretical foundations as well as some related empirical works and try to investigate commons and differences between them, based on literature and empirical studies. The purpose of writing this paper is to provide a clear outline of the two theories and point out how they are interrelated yet separate predictions about how second language are learned. It is meaningful because the results can be valuable guidance and highlights for language teachers and learners to teach or acquire a language better.

Study of Negative Effects of the Native Language Transfer on Second Language Acquisition

Language transfer has long been one of significant parts of the studies on the second language acquisition(SLA). The native language transfer will inevitably generate definite influences on SLA, negative or positive; it is less important to study the positive effects of the native language transfer. This paper is aimed to give a brief analysis on negative effects of the native language transfer in SLA with those English learners whose mother tongue is Chinese as examples. Meanwhile, in English teaching and learning, realization of negative transfers of the native language and utmost avoidance of them can improve the English learners' learning quality.

The Second Language Acquisition of English in China: The Case Study of Chinese ESL Learners in Australia

English has been learned as the second language in China for decades.However,the study about English teaching and learning is mainly linked with development in instruction methods,while few views of English learners have been involved.This case study interviewed five Chinese overseas students in Australia,asking about their prior English learning experience in China to investigate English study in an anglophone context.The analysis of the interview reveals deficiencies of input,interaction and out-put in English classrooms in China,which contributes to the potential methods of improvements in the future.

Teacher Talk and EFL Classroom Interaction

Teacher talk and teacher-student classroom interaction have always been the central issue among the various classroom researches. Teacher talk is undoubtedly important in EFL(English as a foreign language) classroom in China. This paper attempts to discuss the features of teacher talk in EFL classroom, mainly of NNS(non-native speaker) teachers and the implications and suggestions of how to make teacher talk more appropriate and stimulative.

Research on Effect of Age Parameter in Second Language Acquisition

In the filed of Second Language Acquisition (SLA),language learners'final competence and learning efficiency could be greatly influenced by individual differences,including language aptitude,learners'motivation,first language context and age.These individual differences mentioned above are always regarded as the remarkable parameters in the study on SLA.As one of the most influential parameter,age newly has been re-fetched by contemporary SLA researchers and in this research field critical and sensitive period hypothesis are set as highly valuable research target to explore the problems of learning rate,teaching method ology and language policy.This article firstly introduces the basic theoretical framework of critical and sensitive period hypothesis,and then explores the relation of these two hypotheses and the SLA by existing experimental results.Based on detailed theoretical introduction and exploration of recent research experiment,implications of critical and sensitive period hypothesis are further ap plied in the Chinese teaching context,i.e.the feasibility of age-based multi-methodology teaching method.Meanwhile,exist ing limitations of current major research in this filed also will be presented in order to assist the future experimental study in Chi nese teaching context,especially university ESL teaching.

互动语言学在汉语二语教学中的应用:理论基础与实践设计

二语教学是互动语言学极有发展前景的一个研究领域。本文简要阐述了将互动语言学应用于汉语二语教学的理论基础,并结合已有研究提出互动视角下汉语二语教学实践设计的基本思路。总体来看,互动语言学能应用于汉语二语教学有三个重要的理论基础:1)二语发展以言谈互动为原始环境;2)二语习得以互动能力为终极目标;3)二语能力以社会行为表达为核心要素。在此基础上,文章提出汉语二语教学实践四点基本思路:1)开发真实自然的汉语教材;2)创设面向交际的互动语境;3)运用基于互动的教学策略;4)开发多种模态的教学资源。

协作写作对中国英语学习者写作质量和二语学习的影响

本文基于社会文化理论中的最近发展区,通过对比合写文本与独立写作文本的差异探究协作写作对英语专业本科生写作质量的影响,同时通过半结构化访谈和反思日志探究协作写作对二语学习的作用。研究发现,合写文本在词汇复杂性、语言准确性和写作质量方面具有显著优势,但两者句法复杂性和语言流利性不存在显著差异。质性结果显示,协作写作可以促进二语学习,这是因为学生在合作过程中可以为彼此搭建支架,相互交流和学习,但同伴间的分歧、任务和时间分配的不合理、知识储备不足会阻碍语言的发展。研究有望对英语写作教学提供新的视角与教学模式。
