The precipitation of epsilon copper at 1023 K ageing in ferrite antibacterial stainless steel was investigated by a combination of electron microscopy and micro-Vickers hardness measurement. The results show that epsilon copper precipitation occurs within 90 s, Complex multilayer structure confirmed as twins and stacking faults on {111}ε-Cu planes was observed in the precipitates. The precipitates grow by the lengthwise enlargement of a set of parallel layers, having [111]ε-Cu and [112]ε-Cu preferred growth orientations. The volume fraction of precipitates f formed within 120 min can be predicted by a modified Avrami equation (In1/1-f= kt + b). Simultaneously, substituent atom clusters with a size of 5-10 nm was found to occur in the solution and cause matrix strain. The precipitate morphology and distribution on the surface of ferrite antibacterial stainless steel are associated with surface crystallographic orientation of the matrix. The precipitates are predominantly located within the ferrite grains of 〈110〉 orientation. The precipitates located on {111}α-Fe surface planes have sphere or ellipse shape. 展开更多

Austenite antibacterial stainless steels have been found to have wide applications in hospitals and food industries. In recent years epsilon copper precipitation in antibacterial stainless steels has obtained much research interest due to its antibacterial action. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of nitrogen concentration on the precipitation of epsilon copper and antibacterial property. Two kinds of austenite antibacterial stainless steels containing copper and different nitrogen concentration (0.02 and 0.08 wt pct, respectively) were prepared and the microstructures were characterized by a combination of electron microscopy and thermodynamic analysis. A mathematical expression was deduced to predict the effect of nitrogen concentration on the activity coefficient of copper, In(fCu/f^0cu)=0.53524+4.11xN-0.48x^2N. Higher nitrogen was found to increase the free energy difference of copper concentration distribution between precipitation phase and austenite matrix, stimulate the aggregation of copper atoms from austenite, increase the precipitation amount and consequently enhance the antibacterial property of steel. 展开更多

This work describes the experimental results of pyrometallurgical removing of arsenic from the dust collected in the electrostatic copper precipitators within the gas cleaning system of a Copper Flash Smelting Furnace. The generation of dust in the copper smelting worldwide ranges from 2 - 15 wt% per ton of a copper concentrate. In Chile, copper smelters produce approximately 110 kt/y of dust with a concentration of arsenic between 1 and 15 wt%. The dust is a complex of metals oxides and sulfurs with copper concentrations greater than 10 wt% and relatively high silver concentrations. Since its high arsenic concentration, it is difficult to recover valuable metals through hydrometallurgical processes or by direct recirculation of the dust in a smelting furnace. Thus, the development of pyrometallurgical processes aimed at reducing the concentration of arsenic in the dust (<0.5 wt%) is the main objective of this study, giving particular attention to the production of a suitable material to be recirculated in operations of copper smelting. The work provides a detailed characterization of the dust including the Quantitative Evaluation of Minerals by Scanning Electron Microscopy (QEMSCAN), Scanning Electron Microscope-Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (SEM/EDS), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), the elemental chemical analysis using Atomic Adsorption (AAS), and X-Ray Fluorescence (X-RF). By considering that arsenic volatilization requires a process of sulfidation-decomposition-oxidation, this work seeks to explore the roasting of mixtures of copper concentrate/dust, sulfur/dust, and pyrrhotite/dust. By the elemental chemical analysis of the mixture after and before the roasting process, the degree of arsenic volatilization was determined. The results indicated the effects of parameters such as roasting temperature, gas flow, gas composition, and the ratio of mixtures (concentrate/dust, sulfur/dust, or pyrrhotite/dust) on the volatilization of arsenic. According to the findings, the concentration of arsenic in the roasted Flash Smelting dust can be reduced to a relatively low level (<0.5 wt%), which allows its recirculation into an smelting process. 展开更多

This paper describes the experimental results of removing arsenic from the dust collected in electrostatic precipitators of a fluidized bed roasting furnace (RP dust). The fluidized bed roasting process generates 600 kilotons of copper concentrate per year with 3 - 6 wt% of concentration of arsenic, producing a roasted product with a low content of arsenic below 0.3 wt%. The process generates 27 kilotons of RP dust per year with a concentration of arsenic of the order of 5 wt% and copper concentration of around 20 wt%. Subsequently, the dust collected in the electrostatic precipitators is treated by hydrometallurgical methods allowing the recovery of copper, and the disposition of arsenic as scorodite. This work proposes to use a pyrometallurgy process to the volatilization of arsenic from RP dust. The obtained material can be recirculated in copper smelting furnaces allowing the recovery of valuable metals. The set of experiments carried out in the roasting of the mixture of copper concentrate/RP dust and sulfur/RP dust used different ratios of mixtures, temperatures and roasting times. By different techniques, the characterization of the RP dust determined its size distribution, morphology, and chemical and mineralogical composition. RP dust is a composite material of small particles (<5 μm) in 50 μm agglomerates, mostly amorphous, with a complex chemical composition of sulfoxides. The results of the roasting experiments indicated that for a 75/25 weight ratio of the mixture of the copper concentrate/PR dust under 700℃, 15 minutes of roasting time with injection of air, the volatilization of arsenic reached 96% by weight. The arsenic concentration after the roasting process is less than 0.3% by weight. For a 5/95 mixture of sulfur/RP dust, at 650℃, the volatilization of arsenic reached a promissory result of 67%. Even that this study was carried out for a particular operation, the results have the potential to be extended to dust produced in the roasting of concentrates of nickel, lead-zinc, and gold. 展开更多

The Cu-containing steels are widely used for nuclear pressure vessel materials because of their good performance under high pressure and high temperature. In this article, magnetron sputtering was used to prepare iron films with various Cu contents. The samples were annealed at temperature range of 300–500 °C, and the structural, mechanical, and magnetic properties were studied. The results show that both hardness and modulus change along with copper content and annealing temperature. The change in coercivity after annealing is similar to that of hardness. The crystal grain growth in matrix ferrum and Cu precipitation during annealing influences both the mechanical and magnetic properties. 展开更多

A recently developed advanced hot-formed (AHF) steel for automobile is introduced and three physical metallurgy concepts based on which the AHF steel was designed are reviewed, they are dynamic carbon partitioning (DCP), flash copper precipitation and bake toughening. AHF steel is an upgrade of the existing hot-formed steel especially suitable for making components with superior crashworthiness; it can be processed by regular hot stamping equipment and process. A kinetics model for DCP is expressed in detail, which can be used to calculate the volume fraction of retained austenite based on four materials and processing parameters. The flash copper precipitation used as an additional strengthening mechanism for AHF steel is also discussed and its ultrafast kinetics can be attributed to the enhancement of quenched-in vacancies on copper diffusion. Also, the bake toughening of AHF steel is addressed; the mechanism of which may be related to the elimination of the less stable block-like retained austenite. 展开更多

The effect of the amount of precipitant ammonia on the Cu0/Cu+ratio of Cu/Si O2 prepared by the deposition–precipitation method is investigated. Species at different preparation stages, resulted from the amount of ammonia used, are identified by the XRD and FTIR techniques. Chrysocolla together with either copper nitrate hydroxide or copper hydroxide coexist in the uncalcined catalysts. Upon calcination, the latter two species are converted to Cu O particles while chrysocolla remains. Following reduction, Cu O is transformed to metallic Cu and chrysocolla is converted to Cu2 O. The value of Cu0/Cu+ratio can be evaluated using the peak areas in their TPR profiles. Hydrogenation of dimethyl oxalate(DMO) to ethylene glycol(EG) shows that the selectivity of EG depends on the Cu0/Cu+ratio. Catalyst prepared with the addition of ammonia solution at n(NH3)/n(Cu2+) = 0.9 for precipitation–deposition gains a more suitable Cu0/Cu+ratio upon reduction and thus has a higher selectivity for EG. 展开更多
